Official US Trailer for Oscar Hopeful Italian Film Gomorrah

Those that follow the foreign line-up closely have probably heard a lot about Gomorrah, an Italian mafia movie that won the Grand Prize (not the Palme d'Or) at Cannes earlier this year. The film is a violent inside look at Italy's most dangerous modern-day crime families. I actually saw Gomorrah back at the AFI Fest in November and honestly really did not like it at all. It's a very bitter and dry film that doesn't have an actual plot, it's just a series of very weird stories about various young members of this crime family. However, it is winning plenty of awards, so I'll feature this trailer anyway for those that might be interested.

Gomorrah is both written and directed by Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone, of Guests, Roman Summer, The Embalmer, and First Love previously. The screenplay was written by Garrone as well as Maurizio Braucci, Ugo Chiti, Gianni Di Gregorio, Massimo Gaudioso, and Roberto Saviano. The film is based on Roberto Saviano's controversial book of the same name. Gomorrah first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was picked up in the US by IFC Films. It will play in limited theaters starting on February 13th.

I'm not sure what the budget was for this, but I doubt it was very high. Besides, it might just be their intention. It's got a gritty quality to it. I could be wrong, just my take on it.

@5 I think the goal was to shoot it as sort of documentary, also most actors are not professionals and directly from these towns of southern Italy... also our (italian) cinematography is far from quality (and budget) of your movies, so appreciate the effort! This movie is based on a best seller book about mafia connections.

I saw this when it released in Britain around a month ago, and I must admit I was blown away with it. A very good film, that is worth watching if your a fan of foreign cinema.

It would be nice to see a movie that, for once, does not glamorize being a criminal....tell the true story of just what scum gangsters/mobsters really are...this might make an attempt to do that....jmo...

did you also happen to not like it because it didnt have the cinematic flair and gloriousness of movies such as the Godfather that glamorized being a criminal? maybe this movie really is realistic and that doesnt do it for people who enjoy Dark Knight-style storytelling

That voiceover really killed this trailer...I think most modern day trailers are evolving to use more of an instrumental approach to entice emotion in their watcher and therefore interest in the film. The voice over died with Don Lafontaine...

You don't win an award for best screenplay with no plot. Anyone who has seen an Israeli film knows that the rest of the world does not necessarily subscribe to the "hollywood" format, and I believe that to be very healthy. If Cinema were constant, unchanging, if we lacked aspects of the avant-garde being introduced to the mainstream, then it would shrivel up and die, unwatched. Oh, and "a series of very weird stories about various young members of this crime family" is a plot. I'm sure you'd consider Love Actually's "series of very weird stories about various residents of London falling in love" a plot. And have you ever heard of the French New Wave?
