Hit men ready to take their shots
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 7th, 2008 at 3:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Passed on the thought of a two-hour-plus round trip to watch a 20-minute walkthrough on Day 15 of training camp.
Training camp has been limited contact anyway, with the exception of one goal line sequence in full gear through 20 practices. Walkthroughs I’ve seen are little more than lollygag warmups, with players going through the paces of some of the plans which will be implemented Friday night against the 49ers.
Which brings us to Michael Bush and Tyvon Branch, two players who are looking to hit somebody when the Raiders host the 49ers at McAfee Coliseum.
Both could be key components of the Raiders because of their physicality, or virtual non-factors if they’re not ready for prime time.
True prime time won’t come until Week 1 of the regular season against the Denver Broncos, but the preseason opener is the next best thing for two young players whose futures will be determined on dishing out more punishment than they take.
Coach Lane Kiffin has been praising Bush of late for showing signs of being the kind of pounding back they want him to be, while at the same time prodding him publicly to show up ready to practice every day.
When Bush broke his leg on Sept. 4, 2006, the Raiders were coming off a 4-1 preseason under Art Shell and were a week away from the 27-0 Week 1 embarassment against the San Diego Chargers that set the tone for their season.
Louisville was up 31-14 against Kentucky and Bush had already run for 128 yards and three touchdowns in the third quarter. When was tackled by linebacker Wesley Woodyard, his Heisman Trophy candidacy and his junior season vanished in a snap of his right leg.
When Bush takes the field against the 49ers, it will be the first time he has played in an game since that night. He came off the Physically Unable to Perform list and practiced for a time during the regular season but was never activated, going back on PUP.
“I didn’t think it would be this long,” Bush said. “I was told six months, seven months. It’s been two years now. I’m ready to get out there and get it going again.”
Kiffin has made it clear he wants Bush to complement Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden by being a line-smashing power back. The thing is, Bush is an excellent receiver who has some style to his running as well with an ability to make people miss. You get the impression Kiffin would rather Bush simply lower his shoulder make like Jerome Bettis.
Bush’s philosophy?
“I’ll drop my shoulders if I need to, if not, I won’t,” Bush said. “In goal line and stuff like that, you need to run like a big guy. You need to lean forward and get your head down.”
Then again . . .
“I don’t think you just drop your head at any time,” Bush said. “If you get an opportunity to make a bigger play, then why not?”
Branch will get first crack at being the Raiders kickoff return specialist, where his style is to hit the crease at full speed without a lot of subtle feints or evasive action.
His most intriguing skill, which made him a fourth round draft pick, is his reputation as a hitter and tackler. It’s something the Raiders can use immediately on their coverage teams and eventually in the secondary. There have only been glimpses during training camp, where players aren’t allowed bring people to the ground. Midair collisions are frowned upon.
In the evening session between the Raiders and 49ers, however, Branch crossed the line but in so doing may have given a preview of his capabilities.
It happened on a goal line pass to the 49ers Cameron Colvin, with Branch arriving at the same instant at a Tatum-like angle. Branch unloaded. Colvin, to his credit, got back up. There may have been a hit from a Raiders safety in the past two years that matched it, but I can’t recall it.
(Admittedly, that says more about the Raiders’ weaknesses in the deep secondary than it does about Branch).
“That was kind of out of frustration,” Branch said. “I really didn’t mean to hit him that hard, but I’m looking forward to hitting someone hard on Friday.”
Branch, a converted cornerback, admits to pent up frustration with camp limitations on hitting.
“You spend all this time working and you look forward to punishing somebody,” Branch said.
Branch said he reported in good shape and that camp has been more draining mentally than physically. He concedes he is still learning to play without thinking.
“A lot of the base stuff I’ve got down, but I’m in my playbook every night,” Branch said. “It’s hard to play off instinct when you’re learning a new defense. I’m almost getting it.”

August 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
At lunch today I watched 10 minutes of some Brett Favre special that was running on NFL Network. They were talking about the game in Oakland after Favre’s dad died; his wife was very complementary of the Raider fans.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Jerry your the freaking man!! I Knew you wouldnt make us wait till the game for a fix!! Ok I hoped but thanx again!!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
If Branch hasn’t picked up on the RR defense by now we better start looking at his Wonderlic score.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Waited since January for my RAIDER fix.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

That was kind of out of frustration,” Branch said. “I really didn’t mean to hit him that hard, but I’m looking forward to hitting someone hard on Friday.”
August 7th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Like what Branch had to say more than Bush. How many carries/touches for McFadden tomorrow?

Which link yesterday S&B?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
You guys ready to watch RunDMC and the Bush?!!!! I know I am!!! I know it’s only preseason but I’m ready to see some action.
Let’s get this thing started Raider Nation!!!!!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
If Branch can play as tough as he talks, this guy will sell a lot of Silver & Black jerseys!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
I hope we run the ball 40-45 times a game that way I get to see McFadden and Bush on a lot of ESPN highlights this season.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

How many of you guys are going to the game tomorrow? Vegas actually carries all the Raiders preseason games and behind the shield, but only a few games a year on TV.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Yeah, that was a good one wasn’t it S&B666…
August 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
So ready to see the hats Tyvon and Big Mike B are going to bring at the expense of the 40whiners… Is Raiderhed taking over Candlestick again or what? SOOOOO terrible that the live music and DJs are banned from the coliseum this year.
NATION! Keep the faith brothers…

Heres an article about nnamdi.
My “for all my know” trumps your “its Als fault rant.
When I get back I will find the story linking Nnamdi to Boston as part of his community work.

August 7th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Man, it sure is good to hear Bush will resist Kiffins attempts to turn him into a one-dimensional short yardage back. Because I thought he was a brilliant tail-back in school.
Kiffins doing the same thing with JaMarcus, making him a dump down passer.
Gruden left a bad taste in my mouth about young conservative coaches playing not to lose.

Anyone going to the game tomorrow? I am. I don’t have a ticket, will I be able to get one at the game? Should I get one in the parking lot or just get one at the Box office?
August 7th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Buh is a Excellent receiver, oh the possibilities of this. DMC will be throwing to him. This is wonderful 8-8 Baby!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Thanx for the FIX, Jerry Mac.
Can’t wait to see some HITS.
Jerry, you mean to tell us, that IBA won’t pony up the $$$ for closet space at the Napa Marriot, or at least a suite at the local Motel 6.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Well, word in the barber shop, they think the Raiders can be pretty good this year. 8-9 wins if Al Davis keeps out of it, and goes sits down somewhere.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I agree Kool, if we try to pigeon-hole this guy as a move the pile short-yardage back, which he wasn’t in college, he may never mature into what he should with his skill set. He needs to be in space, utilizing his hands and his ability to run over DB’s.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
BAY AREA FANS HELP!!!
I would like to go to the game tomorrow. I am from SoCal but in Oakland on business for a few days. What is the best way for me to get a ticket to the game?
August 7th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Yeah Vegas. Let people do what they do best.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Einstein… Buy one at the box office. Games not sold out.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Einstein, There’s always lots of scalpers in the parking lot and there should be tickets available at the window. The game isn’t sold out, atleast not yet. Might be lots of whiner fans show up though.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
ok, thanks RaiderLen.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Einstein…Plenty of scalpers regardless. Might find a good deal if you’re willing to shop
August 7th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Einstein there will be plenty of tickets everywhere… parking lot, box office, craigslist, stubhub… you can probably get the cheapest in the parking lot or on craigslist but for security try stubhub or just go to the box office
August 7th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Einstein,
Pick one up in the parking lot (ticket office or scalped) that is cheap (mt davis) and then try to sit in the lower bowl in an empty seat.
Preseason games are always half empty, if not more.
I’ll be there. Second 137.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
137…GREAT Tip
August 7th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Did you guys read that article posted by Andrews mom.
Seriously out of date!!
“If this trade were to happen, the Raiders wouldn’t have to worry about their D-line in the upcoming draft, which means that they would be free to draft Ohio State phenom Vernon Gholston to shore up their LB corps.”
Didn’t the Jets draft Vernon Gholston?
Where do people find these garbage articles?
August 7th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I checked craigslist but I don’t want to sit on the whiners side. I will only sit on the Raiders side. I’m pumped.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Its ok Andrews mom I still think your hot…for an internet chick!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Best seats are on visiting side, first level.
99% Raider fans regardless of where you sit.
There may be a few more visiting fans tomorrow because its the niners and it’s preseason.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
SB666 - I hate to be the one to tell you this but Andrew’s Mom is a dude. If you don’t believe me, ask him.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Einstein just go to the game ull get a ticket as long as you got cash! and there’s still tix avalible @ the box office or there’s always the scalpers
August 7th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Besides… it’s Our House.. .they have no side!!!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Einstein - the visitor side has great sight lines. My tix are over there. I love it. It’s all Raider fans anywhere you sit. Lots of good camaraderie.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Every prediction I’ve seen on here by the “insider” or any other of his many nicknames has been wrong. Every single one. Will they stay wrong? Who knows?
The easiest thing in the world is to be negative — eventually bad things happen if enough time (or plays) goes by. On the occasion that a prediction of failure comes to fruition, then the person who made the prediction gets to boast how right he was. Show the real score though, and we see how many more times the predictor is wrong than right.
Michael Bush is the real deal. If — IF — he stays healthy, he will be a shock to the NFL world. Even if that happens, though, his will not be considered a success story by those who have only negative things to say.
Do positive thoughts mean positive things happen all the time? Not even close. But it sure beats wishing failure on the team we spend so much time following. One thing I’m positive of — this team has as much right, and as much of a chance, to improve as any team in the NFL this year.
p.s. What’s the matter with keeping your team in tact? Don’t we want our guys to be tactful? I love it when the same guys who are telling us how stupid we are don’t even understand the words they’re trying to use. It’s not a spelling issue, either — it’s a grammar and understanding issue. Some people (especially those with multiple identities here) are the quickest to proclaim their overwhelming intelligence, and yet they can’t even use the correct words in their proper context. In tact. Now that’s funny.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
how do you watch the game on behind the shield?
August 7th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Einstein — You can buy a ticket right now through Raiders.com (Ticketmaster), or know that you can get one in the parking lot or on the street before the game. Don’t, under any circumstances, buy from a scalper at face-value — this game will probably have 20,000 or so empty seats to pick from. And, make sure you bring enough cash for parking, too!
August 7th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Daze#37…everyboby has their “perspective”..I’d like to believe that those Raider fans that have followed the team for more than a decade, would show some restraint and common sense when it comes to evaluating coaches, players, and the orginazation as a whole.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
the game will be shown on the sacramento stations live on 13
August 7th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Hey fellaz,
Anybody playing fantasy this season?
August 7th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
HazeDave,
I find all these Raider Evangelicals just as disgusting.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
More to the point, Al Davis Evangelicals! Sickening.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Len — Well, we know better. But, I get what you’re saying. I wasn’t making a point about perspective, though…I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of a certain poster. Because I could
August 7th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
KK — I think I know what you’re saying, too. I don’t subscribe to the theory that the Raiders have a “birthright” to be #1. Or that we’ll be unbeatable, or in the Super Bowl this year. But, I’ll keep hoping they can be all those things (while keeping my feet firmly planted to the ground).
And, you already know I am a big Al supporter — but that doesn’t mean I think he’s perfect. He’s just the guy who got this team, and the NFL, to where it is right now (bad years and all). Al’s the man, whether we like him or not — and I most certainly like him.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
I grew up worshipping Al in the 60’s, Now I’m damned near 60 myself, and I just wanna win.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I get it, dude. So does he.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

And, I know how old-school you are. You even pointed out how I confused Stabler’s relationship to Blanda with the one he had with Lamonica. That’s definitely old-school. We both are old-school…I’m just more open-minded about things than you are.
Now, that was just a joke!
August 7th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
I have my popcorn ready for tomorrow…going to dvr it and later disect every play
August 7th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

good to see ya =)
I’m watching Leinert, man i’m glad we didn’t take him, he didn’t look all that bad, but man i’m glad we having jammy and not leinert =)
August 7th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
I wonder if javon walker can catch a total of 6 balls without dropping one
August 7th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
For the record, Bush ran for 128 yards and three touch downs in the first half of that game against Kentucky. He was hurt at the very beginning of the second half. He did all of that in just two quarters of play!
August 7th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
2 years is a long time to be inactive..expect some rust
August 7th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
When I look at Stabler’s peers I think about how good he really was.
Ken Anderson
Dan Pasterini
Bob Avalini
Fran Tarkington
Brent Jones
Steve Bartkowski
Billy Kilmer
Brian Sipe
Jim Hart
Joe Ferguson
The top QB’s at that time were The Snake, Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw
August 7th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
I would take the Snake over any of those guys!!
August 7th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Bush is all man — physically and mentally. If he lives up to his potential (there’s that word), the Raiders have two players with Hall Of Fame ability at RB. If JaMarcus lives up to his, we’ll have a backfield full of HOF material.
LMN — Thx. Agree on Leinhart. He was never the choice for this team, and the Raiders are glad they didn’t take him. He’s just another below-average NFL QB for now, and may become an average one. It’d be cool if he lived up to his own potential, but if it doesn’t happen this year, he’ll be just another journeyman bouncing around for 10-years, living off his college rep (which is exactly what Michael Bush is doing right now).
August 7th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
i am all for Ken Stabler making it into the Hall of Fame. It is a travesty that the man is not there right this minute. One of the best of his time.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Tommorrow I’ll be watching to see if the Raiders can execute 3 plays in a row without mistake or penalty.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Do they give updates on here during the game? Not only am I on the east coast but I will be working where they have nfl.com blocked.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Stabler was as clutch as it gets. Something most QB’s never achieve. If that’s all that mattered, he’d be in the HOF years ago. Unfortunately, the voters are even more biased than hardcore Raiders fans are (or fans of any team, really). If there’s any justice, Stabler will take his place with the greats in Canton eventually…
August 7th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Stabler also had time to ck his watch before each throw.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Of course I am sure his DUI arrest a couple of weeks or so ago, probably won’t help him garner any votes for next year.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Stabler = HOF…..Period
we could be down in the 4th, you allways knew he could/would pull it out some kind of way.
He is my favorite QB of all time.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Personally Stabler was the first quarterback I remember. Him and Madden on the sidelines with both their hair looking like chit. Clock under 2:00 min and down to their last time out. Of course we win almost always did in the day.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

August 7th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Let’s not forget the HOF Fouts just because he was a Chargirl.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
You mean Bob Griese
August 7th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
KK — C’mon, man…some of the greatest plays in Raiders history happened with Stabler under extreme pressure. If the ultimate idea was to win, damn the other stats, Stabler was a man among boys.
And, yes, his DUI problem(s) hurt his chances when his name comes up. Worse, though, is the fact that all the anti-Raiders bias has rolled downhill all these years, and the younger HOF voters don’t even have a clue about old-school football players.
If not for the Immaculate Reception, Stabler and the Raiders would’ve been THE team to beat in the NFL through the 70’s. Actually, they were — and unfortunately, they did get beat a number of times when they could’ve just as easily won those games. Any given Sunday…
August 7th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
No disrespect to the awesome Raiders line of the 70’s-80’s, of course!
August 7th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Yeah my bad i meant Bob Griese thanks for the correct KK
August 7th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Stabler was money. He also had HOF’s all over his side of the ball.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Those were the real days of football… Guys were mean and tough. Big hits were a common occurance.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
The 76′ Raiders the best team of all time in my opinion
August 7th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I still dont like franco harris.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
If I could choose one Quaterback in history to start a team with, it would be Horse Teeth John Elway.
I’m hoping Mr Davis’s comparison with JaMarcus Russell comes true.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I am glad we are talking about the Raiders of old. The were winners and had a lot of big hitters. This current team has brought on some big hitters that play old school smashmouth. These young lions WILL lead the way to our Birthright.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
not that Pennington is superman, but is way better than what KC has, and their Caoch knows Chad, I don’t hope they will pick him up
August 7th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
KK, I am biased i will take the Snake all day.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Dolphins pick up pennington
August 7th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Smashmouth? The reason the Raiders were so dominant is they would just flat out manhandle people up front.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
How long would it take for JMarcus to be able to call plays at the line of scrimmage, or run a no-huddle offense?
That’ll be the day!
August 7th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
And, Stabler was up against HOF’ers all over the defenses he faced.
There needs to be a “relativity” rating when they vote for the HOF. In NFL history, Stabler was (relatively speaking) one of the best to ever lead a team on the field. Not being recognized as such diminishes the NFL.
Stabler won one, and Plunkett won two. IMO, Stabler belongs in the HOF, and the great Raider Jim Plunkett doesn’t. It’s hard to remain objective when evaluating things like that.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Thanks I will try that website.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
I hope dolphins pick up pennington, the cooks also interested.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
While we are at it, lets include Tom Flores as someone who should be enshrined as well. A great head coach who never really has gotten his due throughout the years either.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Stabler faced probably one of the best defenses ever
The steel curtain.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
I hope and think it will be the bears… Either Orton or Grossman looks like a starter..
August 7th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Stabler played from 72 - 80? 8 yrs. (With Raiders)
August 7th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Plunkett, Stabler, and Flores all belong in the HOF
August 7th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Al Davis gets all of Tom Flores credit for him
August 7th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Elway’s the best I ever saw personally — regardless of his record vs the Raiders. Like him or not. Al recognizes talent (for the most part) when he sees it. JaMarcus looks physically awesome right now, but he needs experience more than anything to turn into a quality NFL starter. If he does to the Raiders what Elway did to Denver, this team will be something to behold. Al was right about Elway, and he’s probably right about JaMarcus. Only JaMarcus can prove it, either way. Here’s to Al being right.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Not crying over spilled milk but it would have been great to have JRUSS in all camp last yeear
August 7th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Are those dudes still alive who y’all are discussing?
August 7th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Google it
August 7th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
That’s not Al’s fault — he proclaims to the world that Flores should be recognized as a great coach. Neither Flores’s coaching, nor his teams, are recognized for their accomplishments.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Stabler reminds me a little of Len Dawson. Their teams were so physically powerful, all they had to do was manage the game.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Those games were fun to watch back then, Punishing defenses, powerful smart offensive line. You knew every Sunday that they were going to win, and that the game could almost be won without even playing the Raider mystique Psyched out teams before the coin toss.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Even after all these years, only Montana and Brady reached 100 wins sooner than Stabler did. Going by stats like that, he should be in. Unfortunately, those aren’t the only stats they use.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
As long as we are on it Ray Guy punter or not best ever at his position HOF>
August 7th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
because of Guy the Raiders never had to carry a third quarterback.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Time for me to close. It’s been nice chatting football (and almost nothing but) for awhile. Time for dinner. Later, Raiders fans!
August 7th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
the patsies run-game seems to be very very baaad
August 7th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Absolutely, how could we forget Ray Guy. Excellent choice also for the HOF.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
I have been watching a part of the Patsies game, I don’t believe they started too many of starting linemen.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Kick off this time tomorrow. Can’t wait to see Jamarcus and DMac. I know the D will show up they need to hit someone badddd.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
HD37, enjoy yourself Bro….
August 7th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
I just hope all these soft practices don’t hinder our ability to tackle well.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Flores mistake was leaving Oakland and in recent history so was Grudens (now he’s weak - he doesn’t have Al lighting a fire under his ass)
Game time tomorrow. Don’t look too much into this game. Its only preseason. Just look for the basics:
1. pass protection
2. # of penalties on the Oline
3. stoutness of the DTs at the line
4. can the WR corp get separation
Fast forwarding into the season - Man, Denver is just getting weaker and weaker by the week. Oakland could be looking at a 2-0 start to the season if we look decent enough and everyone stays healthy through the preseason.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Terrapin
I just hope we tackle. Can’t get more basic than that.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Its going to be difficult to judge MBush this game b/c he’ll likely face off against strubs, likewise for Watson (I worry if he is winded by now …I don’t think he has taken a day off yet vs other WRs).
If Branch looks good, we’ve got something for sure. Too many years watching Carr get to the 20 only to get pushed over by someone’s pinky finger - Tired of that! When was the last time this team had a KR for a TD? Too many years struggling with bad field position. We finally have a coach actually doing something about it and not just lip service.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Al Davis & Evangelicals:
Just win baby!
August 7th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
MBUSH should dominate the scrubs
August 7th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I would like to see good pass protection, no stupid penalties and good tackling. I believe that our Oline will be good with the running attack.
Good basic, hard hitting, smart football would be a nice thing to watch for this first preseason game.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Sadly, part of getting into the HOF more so when you’re a coach vs a player is having a story. I can quickly name more coaches in the Hall that have made a story with one team than I can think of that shopped themselves around.
When Flores was in Oakland, he had a story. He had DA’ RAIDERS. He had DAVIS. He had CHAMPIONSHIPS. He never should have left; esp not for that piss mop for a franchise. He lost that story and to a significant extent hurt is chances.
Americans love stories - they love the forgotten, the rebels, the rebellion against the status quo which is why the loved the Raiders. What do the Seachickens have to offer? Fish?
August 7th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I don’t know if I would read too much into the first preseason game fellas. The teams wouldn’t put ANY starters in the games if they weren’t charging FULL PRICE admission!! This first game is an opportunity to see if any one guy emerges from a bunch of undrafted players. That’s what to watch for.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
CT Raider, Regarding #142, half to three quarters of the game you’re going to be seeing offensive linemen that have never played together before. There’s going to be lots of false starts and missed assignments. So, don’t be too hard on ‘em. Just the way it is.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Flores won as Seattle GM too didn’t he?
No, he was considered a Davis lackey, coaching Davis’s teams, who demeanded all the credit, and still does.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
NATION, all you guys have a great evening.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Definitely OG - You’ll know a little bit more about the 1st team by the 2nd and 3rd preseason games. They typically play progressively more these two games. For now, the most you can get is a fair judgement of the depth of the team. Although its worth watching to see if the starters can do the basics, which Art Shell’s 2nd edition Raiders couldn’t muster.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
You are probably right, but we can hope that smart football prevails either way.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
So was Madden, KoolKell, but despite that Madden made it to the HOF didn’t he….
August 7th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
L. Jordan just scored a td, an avg 0n 4.0, they improved their run-game vs BAL 3rd stringers
August 7th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
The first preseason game I’ll give the guys some leeway. However if I see stupid penalties and dumb stuff in the 2nd preseason game, there is going to be renting clothes asunder and gnashing of teeth!!
August 7th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
1h 30m and i have 4 days off, nice loon weekend =)
August 7th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Thank god its againts the 3rd string… I can’t watch the game I was thinking they had him start I was pissed!
August 7th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Thats right …you want to see of Harris settles in …don’t jump ship 1st game …see if he progresses …indications in camp are that he is improving a good bit.
Not making excuses (sure I am, but you get what I’m talking about) but it doubly hard to judge the 1st team b/c they’ll go against a 3-4 defensive scheme.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
i’m out - peace
August 7th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Franco Harris was the benefactor of a great O-Line that guy fell down and ran out of bounds more than Sean Alexander. Why that guy is in the HOF is beyond me.
Yes there is no doubt that Elway was the purest most natural QB with the smarts and the athletic ability to match. The guy made it to and lost three SB’s on his arm alone Dan Reeves didn’t do him any favors.
But I would still take the Snake. I too am hoping that Russell lives up to the hype and can be as good as Elway was.
I’M IN!!
August 7th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Terrapin you are exactly right. Kwame Harris is not gonna turn from vilified fiend to All Pro Left Tackle in 10 practices. Look at our offensive line last year. The first few games they looked terrible. The last few games, they played very well! We want to see guys improve, over the course of the preseason. If guys start to regress, we’re in serious trouble. And that goes for the entire roster, not just Harris.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
S&B666, thanks for yesterday dude!!! Man that idiot was making a mess, and I appreciate you standing up for me.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Wish both guys the best.

August 7th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Terp,
I think Madden was his own man. He came by himself and he left by himself.
Flores was a Davis QB, a Davis Assist Coach, a Davis Head Coach. Davis traded Flores for Lamonica.
August 7th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Sorry FANG O’Doyle RULES!!
August 7th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
I hate to say this but Schweigert put a pretty big hit on Tony Gonzales last year. I saw that one in person. Granted…that was the only hit Schweigert has ever made but you can’t dismiss it.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Huff24
The fact that he was cut after the first pre-season game
shows how soft he was. We must have really been desperate with our safety positions because he lasted so long with us. Nice guy, but soft and unable to make any big interceptions…never stepped up. We’re up graded at both SS and FS now that he’s gone.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
we need a speedster to return kickoffs. Is Tyvon Branch a speedster? It looks like he will be returning kickoffs. We need someone who is fast and quick. I don’t know if he is either of them. Can someone let me know. Plus we also need a speedster at punt return. Does anyone know which other speedster we have in our roster or is rumored to return punts?
August 7th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Sportsman - http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=3521388
Branch runs a 4.31 while McFadden runs a 4.33 so hes really fast. He was a cornerback in college and was ranked #12 among them when drafted but was converted to safety. Hes talented.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Sportsman - Johnnie Lee Higgins was the #13 ranked WR last year and he runs a 4.48. He is looked at as our punt return specialist.
DeAngelo Hall will be our punt returner on special occasions and Darren McFadden will be our kickoff returner on special occasions to help give a boost during certain moments in games when its absolutely necessary.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Riverside Raiders Fan - I’m not saying I want Scheigert or talking about his skills. I am merely saying that he put a big hit on Gonzales. Unfortunately, thats the only one I recollect from any safety in awhile.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Can’t wait to see my boy Bush! I’m a proud Louisville native and I must say, it’s been a long time since we seen our boy doing what we all grew to know him do so well….make plays. Not just run. He was the best QB in high school in the state next to Brohm (2nd string at Green Bay) when he played for the Male bulldogs, and he was the best RB (yea I’m a lil’ bias!) in the country before he got hurt. He’s about to work out all the kinks tomorrow and get back to that elite status.
Let’s gooooooo!!!!
What colors do you bleed?

August 7th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
What did Reggie Bush run at the combine?
August 7th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Sportsman:
I’m surely no expert on what makes a good return man for punts and kickoffs. However, I can assure you that “speed” is only one factor of many. Ya, it’s important and it could be the separating factor that makes a returner good, rather than average. But this is a team sport, so it takes many things, starting with other other ten men trying to create a wedge or some running lanes, good judgement from the returner if he should even try to return the kick (was the flight time long, is he deep in the end zone, is he catching the ball on a dead run forwardly?) Additional, and maybe most important, is his vision on the field and his willingness to take what they’ve given up. I’ve seen to many returners, try and go across the field from left to right or right to left, but not going forward, but rather backwards to circle the defenders…usually they lose yardage. It also takes good ball handling and a no fear attitude. That’s the negatives on Higgins last year. His eyes would light up like a deer in the road
and he also fumbled many times. So, Higgins, who is scheduled to return punts, has a lot to prove as far as I’m concerned. I’ll be happy if he runs forward and hangs on to the ball. Branch was good in college in returning kickoffs, but can that transfer to the NFL and the speed of the game? Who knows, we’ll have to take a wait and see attitude.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Mike Bush runs a 4.55. Impressive for a guy his size but still slow compared to Thomas Howard who runs a 4.42. Bush is 5 lbs bigger than Howard.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
I’m coming up with a 4.33 for Reggie Bush.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Huff24
I know that’s all you were saying. You know the game too well to think otherwise, and I enjoy your insights and
knowledge of the game that you share and the way you participate. Your a true Raiders fan. I’d drink a cold beer with you any day. GO RAIDERS.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Looks like that 4.33 for Reggie Bush was at his USC Pro Day. There isn’t a Combine 40 time as it looks like he didn’t run.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Riverside Raiders Fan - Thanks. What do you think? I prefer Guiness or Newcastle.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
I mean…what do you drink? Haha. Maybe I’m already drinking. Sheesh. *Tired*
August 7th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
It totally sucks that we have to wait until 10pm to see the game. Is that because the Raiders didn’t sell out or because its pre-season?
August 7th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I actually like the Mexican beers the best: Tecate, Dos XX’s, Corona, etc. American beers it depends what I’m doing or eating. But BUD, and Miller are ok and Sam Adams when I want a stronger beer. My guess is you prefer Guiness, since you mentioned it first. God, will tomorrow ever get here. GO RAIDERS.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Huff24 - it’s because of not selling out, as you alluded to. However, us here in Sacramento get to watch live. We would also be blacked out if this was regular season and they didn’t sell out, but they sort of relax the black out radius in the preseason.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
As long as we’re on the topic of beer, I’ll take a Pyramid Hef or any German beer or microbrew, for that matter.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
If you stupid little F#$@faces dont stop posting Bleacher report nonsense in this blog, I will never again post what I know about future Raider happenings…Done Deal.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
can anyone tell me if and when I can watch the Raiders kick the crap out of the whiners on San Diego Tv??????
August 7th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
SactownRaider - Thanks for the info. I knew the game was on the Sacramento network as I tried to get a Sactown channel in the past but they won’t let us do that of course but I had to try anyways. I can’t believe this game didn’t sell outconsidering 2 Bay Area teams. Nobody wants to go and see 2 4-12 teams I guess.
Have you tried Warsteiner? Good stuff since you like Hef.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
El Dirty - I would think so. Look ahead on your cable guide.

August 7th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Huff24 - yep, I guess with it being the preseason they didn’t sell enough tix. I’m sure if it was regular season, the Bay Area would be all over it.
Haven’t tried Warsteiner. Now I will. Thanks for the tip!!

August 7th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
I meant San Diego sucks for Raider pre-season games, my bad… got all excited.
August 8th, 2008 at 12:17 am
In case anyone’s in the Sac area, the game will be televised live here on channel 13, at 7pm. That’s what it said in the paper. And they did note that it was in fact blacked out in the bay area. Doesn’t make sense. I havent heard of a pre season blackout in years. Have they blacked out pre season games in the bay area in recent years? Anyhow, game’s on in Sac. If you know someone in this ridiculously hot, boring cow town, hit ‘em up. Crash their pad unannounced and drink up all their beer. Enjoy the game, everyone.
August 8th, 2008 at 12:17 am
I didn’t want to log off until after 12 midnite, as that means the day is here and we get our first look at our team for 2008. GO JR, Fargas, Mafadden, Bush, Miller, Walker, Carter, Aso & Hall and Gibril and all the other Raiders players as well. Win big and stay healthy.
PS: to Robert & Paul & Harris…please no off sides penalties, we don’t need 3rd and long.
August 8th, 2008 at 1:21 am
Huff…
If your still here. I was listening to Woodson on NFL Network and he was saying the thing he was looking for in the Raiders-Niners game was to see if Ryan went away from the man coverage. He said again that the Raiders ran man about 90% of the time last year. Said they have to change to win in the NFL.
August 8th, 2008 at 3:37 am

August 8th, 2008 at 6:05 am
—”Second-round pick Eddie Royal has passed Darrell Jackson on the Broncos’ depth chart and is now officially a starter.
“He’s earned the chance to start,” coach Mike Shanahan said. Royal is Denver’s No. 2 receiver and will start when Brandon Marshall returns from suspension. Expectations should be limited for any rookie wideout, but Royal now is worth a late-round pick in 10-team drafts. He has sure hands, blazing speed, and a good QB throwing to him. A 60-catch season is within reach.”—
August 8th, 2008 at 6:05 am
Fresh off watching the first drive by KC vs Bear where starters were in. They scored, but trust me, it was UNIMPRESSIVE. Croyle threw two passes that should’ve been picks; plus some more incompletes. I’ll give him a pass on one of them b/c the WR fell. The run game looked weak. LJ & BC were not on the same page. They’ll stink. I hope we look better.
I didn’t have time to watch anything else but will finish it up later today - prob 1st half max.
August 8th, 2008 at 6:07 am
LMN you’re pretty good at evaluating talent and making your predictions
August 8th, 2008 at 6:16 am
The only way this team is going to win more games than they loose is if Kiffin listens to Davis and sticks to evaluating, coaching, and motivating the current roster. As soon as Davis has valid information about anymore Kiffin inquiries into college coaching vacancies he will promote one of the replacement canidates he has assemble around Russell. With Knapp, Cable, Lofton, and Hackett looking over his shoulder Kiffin better commit to his current job full time this year.
August 8th, 2008 at 6:23 am
LMN - That to me sounds like the panic button being pushed by Shanarat. First Marshall, now their rookie RB out …Shanarats needs some fire from somewhere on the offense so he promotes Royal before his time. Panic button - I’m looking forward to seeing them Monday night.

August 8th, 2008 at 6:32 am
but its great to look at the broncos, because the more you do, the more is it evident that Raiders is up-coming and broncos is on their way down…
their DL and their WR are better than ours, but thats it, IMO, the rest of the positions I think we are better staffed, but DL and WR they are way better…

Hopefully no one gets hurt tonight…
Am interested in seeing Hartwell, Wilson and Hall on defense.
Offense I’m looking at Russell, Mcfadden, Bush, recievers and the O-line…
Should be interesting.
Gotta go…GO RAIDERS!!!
