Broadband Modem, Vacant USB Connection, How To Use It?

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi I have a broadband connection, with a modem, it has a USB vacant connection, and I am installing Debian 4.0 on an old computer nearby. Can my modem be attached via the vacant USB port to the old computer? Will Debian installer detect the hardware? Need it be plugged in during installation?
