Save Money by Walking to WalMart
March 28th, 2008 by LuLuGal
I could save more money if I chose to walk to Walmart. Well that is what my mother suggested to me recently because the WalMart is one mile from where I live.
Now I have not taken her advice yet for two main reasons:
I am still recovering from my surgery
WalMart is on a very busy street
These are the two things that are really keeping me from walking to the store to get the things I need. When I really think about it, walking to the store would actually be a good idea for me because I could get my exercise in AND save money by not making that short drive.
When I was growing up we would walk for more than a mile to go to church, school and the grocery store. We did not have a car so we took the public transportation or walked if it was close enough.
I remember one place I lived we would go shopping every Saturday because we had to walk with the shopping bags. It would be too much to try to do all of the shopping in one day because that would mean we had to walk with very heavy bags…or make multiple trips with smaller bags.
I am not too keen on walking here because of how busy the street is so I think I will have to pass on mom’s suggestion.
What do YOU think?
Would you brave the traffic and walk to the store to save the money?

Isn’t there a sidewalk or a pedstrian crossing on your route? All you have to do is just find the safest point to walk/cross and you will be fine.
Everything else is just a distraction so tune them out to increase your alertness. I am Profoundly Deaf and have walked everywhere, not just on dangerous streets but ravines, etc… I could not hear a car barrelling into me if it honked the horn the whole way and hundreds of people are screaming their heads off to tell me to watch out.
But if I stay alert, the slightest moment I see something wrong with the picture, I know which way to look.
By all means, find the quiet hour on your route and walk it with some friends, get to know where you can cross or walk safely. Drive the route at different times of the day so you can become familiar with the traffic and pick the best time to walk.
I am amazed at how people drive around the block to 7-11 for a slurpie.

@ Mark:
There is no such thing here. Where I live there is just the grass on the side of the road. There is no pedestrian crossing on the road either.
It is a small place and I guess they figure no one would want to walk there.
Now the place my boyfriend lives has sidewalks and crossings and all that good stuff. I just want my mother to understand that the cars here do not slow down because no one expects you to be walking here.
Oh and the WalMart is 1.3 miles away. I pulled it up on Google.

Okay then safety is certainly a priority here. You could always park in the farthest spot in the parking lot and get some excersise that way.

I love walking to places near me when the weather is nice. As for the wal-mart, around me there are literally 4 stinkin walmarts within 30 miles.

I don’t know about you… but when I go to Wal-Mart, I buy a weeks worth of groceries and other supplies. That amounts to several bags (20+)… it would be impossible to carry that many home.
Walking is a good idea though… but it does take a lot of time.

@ Prosperity:
I know it is good to walk…the road is just crazy.
@ JB:
I do the same thing too, so I am thinking about the weight of the bags.
