The Daily Star is today saying that Newcastle United are set to launch an £18M bid for Michael Carrick of Manchester United.
Michael Carrick – local lad said to be target of Newcastle United – great!!
The midfielder was born in Wallsend, and played for the famous Wallsend Boy’s Club, and was capped for the England Boys’ club side at that time. At that time he was a center forward but he then moved to West Ham United in 1998 at the age of 17. That’s when Michael started to play in midfield.
Alan Shearer was of course another player who left the area for another club, Southampton, after also playing for Wallsend Boy’s club, and he even had trials at Newcastle too. 🙁
Carrick moved from West Ham to Tottenham Hotspur in 2004 for £2.5M and then moved to Old Trafford in 2006 in a huge transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, said to be around £18M. His first season saw him surprisingly establish himself as a part of the first team lineup at the Red Devils.
But this season has not been so successful due to injury and also the acquisition of Owen Hargreaves has seen him in a rotation system.
He still may be too important to Alex Ferguson, and as such any potential bid from Newcastle would have to be a good offer. But we think Newcastle would be willing to splash the cash to bring our local boy back to Newcastle United. Carrick is a perfect midfielder that can fit into Kevin Keegan’s free flowing style of play.
We also think Michael would be excited to come to Newcastle, since he was a youngster who watched the club when Kevin Keegan was last at the club.
While at West Ham Michael was part of the Hammers’ Youth team, which won the FA Youth Cup final in 1999. Michael helped West Ham to a 9-0 victory over Coventry City at that time, scoring two goals himself. Joe Cole was also in that side. Michael made his debut for West Ham in August, 1999 at the age of 18 and stands over 6’2″ tall.
Carrick, 26, has 13 caps for England and took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Moving to Newcastle United would also only help his chances of playing more for the England team.
But here is a perfect example of how the club have let many of the top North East youngsters leave the area for other teams. Chairman Chris Mort is determined not to let that happen in the future, and the fans will be very pleased to hear that.
Michael played 136 times for West Ham United scoring goals and played 64 times for Spurs scoring 2 goals. Michael has so far played 51 times for Manchester United scoring 3 goals.

Comment #3Could be a decent signing, if we could off load a couple of players to recoup part of his fee, as it’s been said, 18m could be used better, but I think get rid of perhaps Emre, Geremi and maybe Butt/Smith then Carrick would be a great 1st team player.

Comment #5as kids , carrick had loads of dribbling ability , always assumed he would grow into an attacking midfielder and not a holding one .
sometime i scream at the TV , take him on for god sake carrick !!!! .
but on the other hand he’s grown into a very intelligent footballer , one pass straight into his forwards all the time , its great to see . but dont write him off as being just a holding midfielder , he’s got alot more under the hood.
then again , english players are FAR to expensive its crazy .
it’s roman at chelsea i blame , he drove the price of them up sky high in an attempt to bring in a majority of british players so his takeover of the club didnt look to much of a foreign invasion on a london club , shame arseanl didnt take note of that eh .
and that should be played AT the famous wallsend boys club ed .
hundreds of 5 a side teams there not one club in itself .

Comment #9Need a midfielder that can hit a target from 30/40 yards out.. Nothin’ like seeing the Keeper plucking it out of his net from a blinder.. If only Laurent Robert was 5-6 yrs younger 😉

I’d like Carrick but I’d seriously doubt someone getting in Man Utd’s first team more times than not would leave at the moment.

Comment #17i have seen Carrick hit em from range! i think he could develop his attacking ability under a manager like Keegan! he is an all-round class footballer! would be an excellent addition to the team! 18mil…think we would end up spending more than that on him, Sir Alex rates him very highly!

Comment #19Sissoko would be a great buy!!! Big, strong, fast, good in the air, can score goals and can run at defenders – correct me if i’m wrong but are we not lacking in this department at the mo?
We looked like a team of midgets yesterday, especially in CM.

Comment #23Thanks Stami. It’s not that I don’t wanna see a Geordie midfielder. He just needs to be the right man for the job. If it means that we have to pay (Gerrard/Lampard) dollars for him then,so be it, as long as he can just hit one from distance once in a while and thread passes that provide for the wingers a the guys up front then it would be worth it. But not if he holds the ball.. a creator is what we need.. and 2 of em if possible 🙂

Comment #26We are lacking CMs, I agree. I’m just not convinced by Sissoko. Maybe if we can’t find any else because I do think he’s better than the current CMs we have (not saying much), but from what I’ve seen he’s not got the all-round ability you say he has scotty. Strikes me as more of a battler, rather than a player who takes people on and scores. At least he can tackle though unlike Smith and Butt.

Comment #28Adam, would keep Enrique and Rozehnal, but wouldn’t go after Woodgate. Shoulda kept him when we had the chance, but the offer was too good at the time I guess. Would leave N’Zogbia on the left wing also, maybe play milner more central and have SWP on the right wing.
But otherwise, good suggestions 🙂

Comment #29i would love it if we get him, love it.
As Hadrian said, he’s no simple holding midfielder, he’s a much more complete player. He’s great going forward to not just defending, has great vision and can pick that final pass for us.
I think he is a player that we definitely need right now. He can really make the midfield work and help out both in attack and defense.
As for the price, 18Mil, well that is a little expensive but it’s the same ammount Manure paid for him and if we are to get somewhere in the future were gonna have to start paying these amounts. +Mike has more than enough money. 😉
