There are reports from Spain today, that are suggesting Newcastle United are ready to bid £15M for Samuel Eto, the Barcelona and Cameroon striker.
Samuel Eto – will be leaving Barcelona in summer
Newcastle have done precious little in the transfer market so far this summer, and Kevin Keegan has said he may try for one or two big players this summer.
But we cannot see how we could make a good case for 27 year-old Eto to join Newcastle, unless he fancies the weather in the North-East of England.
We have to understand that we cannot give any top player, European Football at least next season, and the only other way we could attract them is via a massive wage package, but Mike Ashley, quite rightly, is trying to get the wage costs at the club under some kind of control.
It may be true that Newcastle will bid for Eto, and there’s also quite a few other good players at Barcelona we could do with at the Tyneside club, such as Eider Gudjohnsen and Deco, so maybe Newcastle are negotiating in some way with the Spanish Powerhouse for some of their players.
With a new manager coming in, it stands to reason there may be a clear-out this summer, and they have some very good players on the fringe of their team, that’s for sure.
Kevin Keegan is very impressed with the four African players who are currently at the club in Habib Beye, Abdoulaye Faye, Oba Martins and Geremi, and maybe Geremi, who is with the Cameroon side right now, could persuade Samuel that joining Newcastle may not be as daft as it first appears.
But it’s a long shot, to say the least, and we’d rather get some decent players who are now available into the club, before they are all taken.
It looks like Richard Dunne will be moving to Tottenham and we really cannot understand why Newcastle haven’t been more aggressive in the transfer marker this season – like Tottenham for example, who are certainly not letting the grass grow under their feet.
The longer the transfer season goes on, the higher the transfer fees seem to be, so it means good business to move swiftly in the transfer market.
But then again we suppose patience is a virtue, well that’s what we’re told in any case.
Eto has played 108 times for Barcelona since 2004 and scored a phenomenal 77 goals. He’s also played 64 times for Cameron scoring 19 goals.
He is the all-time leading scorer in the history of the African Cup of Nations, with sixteen goals; and Samuel is also the record holder in the number of appearances by an African in La Liga with 271 appeaqrances.

Absolute rubbish! there is no way we will get Eto’o. Besides, it’s midfielders we need not strikers! If we pulled it out the bag and actually signed him, it would be purely for the money and I can see another Kluivert

Comment #7Whats he done in the last year?
There is clearly great tensions behind the scenes at Newcastle which is probably why we are doing nothing in the transfer market. I understand Keegan wanted Dunne but Mike Ashley didn’t:

Comment #9we have priorities in other positions, mainly midfield, then defensive backup, then maybe a striker, eto’o is similar to what we have so i would rather a target man, but if we could broker a loan deal i would be impressed

Comment #12We said before “how good would it be if we had Kluivert and Shearer”. It happened and ended up just being a costly waste of time.
If Toon go for Eto’o it’s for one reason only and that’s to fill the coffers of Sports Direct though shirt sales.
The only way he would sign for us is for huge amounts of money. What’s the point…rather see us go for Gomis or another striker who is on the up.
There are better options than Eto’o.

Comment #17What a waste, Keegan is doing what I was afraid he’d do, what every other manager we’ve had has done in the past years. Bought wee have been players who once upon a time were good but now just go on reputation. The only reason this might turn a few heads is because he has a big name.
He’s a has been and I don’t know, maybe we’d be better off spending our money on someone who’s worth 15 million.

Comment #22broon ale why do u keep talkin about the window being closed, everyone else in tryin to do deals now and so shud we be, unless u want us to wait til the window open wen all the good players have been signed up or their prices have doubled due to a gd euro champs, think about it mate ffs

Comment #23It wouldn’t make sense, considering many reports suggest we’re wanting to sign younger players that won’t command massive wages, with a good resale value.
I really don’t want any big names coming to us! I would like to see young, hungry players that KK has picked out. He did it once before, and know he has even more resources to do it again.
Don’t expect any signings until after the Euros!

Comment #25reillers- so your actually taking this Eto story as gospel even though it came from a newspaper.
To make matters worse you beleive that the newspaper is stipulating the transfer intentions of kevin keegan himself and therfore you insult him by saying “keegan is doing what I am afraid he would do”
no mate. the newspapers are doing what they have always done! make shite up!

Comment #27geordie nick!! you think about it “mate” !!!why would newcastle conduct their transfer activity through the media and newspapers. Why do you assume that we are doing nothing just because the papers are linking other clubs with different players. ? The transfer window is closed and the only speculation you hear is exactly that!! SPECULATION!

Comment #28this would put us on the map- as the premiership nuggets again. Cant see it happening.
Unless a striker is leaving which i hope they arent we only need a striker who is capable of scoring 8-12 premiership goals and is proven.
WE NEED TOP QUALITY MIDFIELD PLAYERS not flaming expensive strikers.
Top quality midfielders will cost us over £13m each and we need three.
we also need ideally about three good defenders a couple of which can score the odd goal, they are going to cost too.
a cheap striker Cisse or Kitson will do, both of whom are proven premiership goalscorers and both will put in 8 plus premiership goals if played all season, Cisse is capable of much more.
Priorities please, we should have reports of us looking at 10 plus quality midfelders and trying to narrow it down.

Comment #35reillers- thts fair enough mate, ur entitled to ur opinion and if u dont like him thts fine, i just think hes better than anyone we hav currently, evryin is sayin no as we need midfielders, i think kk might also know tht we need midfielers. wat difference wud it make if we signed a striker then midfielders, insted of midfielers 1st

Comment #37I agree Ian that we need midfielders but come on! Don’t tell me signing Eto’o wouldn’t make your day. He’s an awesome player.
I agree that we need to improve the midfield first but if the opportunity is there to sign Eto’o (and he was actually willing) I’d snap him up straight away.
It would be a gamble but an understandable one.

Comment #38Thought I’d mention a couple things I’ve heard today;
– – Was just watching SSN, and it had an interview with Modric. He was saying how he loved how Levy (Spurs chairman) made an effort to travel to Zagreb I think to snap him up. Clearly we couldn’t be arsed, which is a bit annoying.
– – Dunne is available after rejecting a contract from Man City (BBC Website). We need to move for him before the transfer window actually opens or else someone else will (like Spurs).
It’s all well and good using the excuse ‘transfer window hasn’t even opened yet’ but if we want to get the best players to our club to take us forward then we need to do so as quickly as possible.
Ramos and Levy are doing a great job as Spurs and are clearly good businessman, hence why they look likely to complete 3/4 signings before the transfer window, therefore getting there before us, and others you are too slow to agree terms with players.
Also, in regards to this. Eto’o?!?! Absolutely no chance, honestly.
EDIT – Spurs have just snapped up Bostock from Palace. Another signing before the window has opened.
