Newcastle United were unlucky not to come away with the win tonight, when PSV finally equalized after 71 minutes to deny Newcastle what would have been a good win.
The Dutch champions were caught napping at the start of the game, and after just 7 minutes found themselves two goals down.
After three minutes an excellent cross from Geremi, from a corner, was headed strongly into the net by Steven Taylor, who certainly enjoyed the goal, and put it away very well indeed.
And then just four minutes later a beautiful passing move by Newcastle that involved Taylor and germei at the start, saw James Milner clear and James laid the ball off to new boy Danny Guthrie to his left, and the 21 year-old coolly slotted the ball past former Manchester City goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson.
A terrific team goal by the Newcastle side.
In his first 8 minutes of his debut against Hartlepool United Danny Guthrie made one and scored one, and then on his home debut tonight, he scored after just 7 minutes.
This Danny Guthrie boy could be a great player for us in the future.
PSV came back into the game after their poor start, and on 32 minutes got a goal back with Ibrahim Afellay slotting through a crowd of players from the edge of the penalty area, after Given had blocked Nordin Amrabat’s first effort.
Geremi should have given Newcastle a third goal when Milner made a great move and had the ball across the box to the Cameroon International, who only had to put the ball home, but Isaksson made a terrific stop right on the line. Geremi, however should have scored.
Newcastle then paid the price of that missed chance, when after 71 minutes Amrabat picked up a loose ball in the box and fired the ball past Shay Given in the home goal.
This Newcastle team again seemed a patched up side, but they played quite well tonight, and Milner and Duff played up front to some good effect.
What we are not getting out of these games however is perhaps 45 minutes of Kevin playing his best side, since so many first teamers are out injured right now.
But this was a really much better effort from the lads than in the terrible heat of Mallorca.

Comment #17guys this is the translation this the best i could do:Real Club Deportivo and Newcastle have sealed this afternoon to transfer the club Fabricio Coloccini English. Both clubs had reached a verbal agreement last week that was signed today in writing.
The Argentine international arrived at Deportivo in the market for the winter season of 1994-95 from Milan. It cost 3 million and, in return, the team “rossonero” undertook to play the Teresa Herrera Trophy Centennial of sports. Four seasons later, Coloccini was going to Newcastle, leaving a benefit to the entity that white could reach the 13 million euros.
From San Cristobal, Miguel Angel Lotina took over from yesterday and the departure of Central deportivista. Now tap a replacement. “I have clear what I want and the player himself and his agent know it. But I prefer to keep before a meeting with the President,” argued the technical basque in a press conference held in the Venezuelan city.

“Deportivo and Newcastle have sealed the late transfer of Fabricio Coloccini to the English club. Both clubs had reached a verbal agreement last week that today was signed in writing. “

Comment #23LOL Hobs – this isn’t the first time though – our late run last season began on the first game that Keegan dropped Smith. It’s no coincidence or joke! The boy can’t play!!
Could it have been Gomis?!?! It did look like him but was taken at a strange angle…that’d be immense!!

Comment #25I watched the first half but had to go out. From what I saw Gutierrez looks pretty good. Guthrie did much better than I expected and I think Milner can play that more central role if needs be. Duff looked fairly handy switching sides and apart from the goal the defense seemed to keep a bit of composure about them

Comment #26A couple daft defensive plays, but overall an uplifting performance, like Ed said. Jonas is a great player. GREAT buy – Gurthrie as well.
If we can “trim the fat” of Smith et al, stay healthy, and play like frigging men on the pitch, our squad will be good enough for top half of the table.
I’m seeing quality – but not enough consistency.

Comment #31Guys, I know these stories are usually complete and utter s**t, and i’m usually the first to say so… but… before you get your hopes up about us signing Gomis or Drenthe, I am reliably informed that the black guy with long dreadlocks seen in the directors box tonight is in fact a 17 year old striker from london who was on trial and played in a behind-closed-doors game against a Motherwell XI at the training ground today, in which he scored 2 goals. Keegan liked what he saw and so he signed him before the game tonight.

Comment #35we played fairly decent. Gutierrez looks a class signing and Guthrie was very good again. Milner was suprisingly good and probably our best man.
Defense was still shaky and there were a few very close calls…..oh and Enrique cost us a goal again… 🙁
PS: Oba the moon with Colo signing !!!!!

Comment #36It was effectively 4-5-1 with the 1 switching between Duff and Milner. To be honest though Butt and Geremi we’re holding pretty much and Duff, Milner, Gutierrez and Guthrie seemed to have free roles within the 4 positions. It looked fairly effective for a while considering we had no strikers on the pitch.

Comment #38Postives – No Alan Smith, Guthire and Jonas look solid to say the least, and the fact we got 2 without a striker on the pitch. I heard a rumor today keano is looking to take smith down the road to the scum.
Negative – No Collo anouncement, the fact oba didnt even make the bench. I hope his injurys not going to keep him out for much longer.

Comment #39Game was good..glad to hear Colocinni has signed apparently
The defence was steady, Beye was outpaced a few times, but he isn’t back to full fitness so will be rusty, so can be forgiven. Enrique played well until his mistake for the second goal, i feel sorry for the lad every mistake he makes seems to lead to a goal.
In midfield Guiterez was full of running and will be a GREAT player for us. Milner was 3 times the player he as against Mallorca and Guthrie and Butt was strong.
Up front..wel we didn’t actually have any natural strikers on the pitch.
MOTM – Danquah for his 5 seconds on the pitch
