It’s not at all surprising to us that Harry Redknapp is eyeing the possibility of getting Irishman Shay Given to White Hart Lane, but there’s just no way Joe Kinnear will let our great goalkeeper leave the club.
Shay Given – over 450 appearances for Newcastle United
Redknapp is looking for a goalkeeper to replace Brazilian summer signing Heurelio Gomesto – Gomes, who has proven a number of times this season, he can make a bad mistake at any time.
But Joe Kinnear seems confident the Ireland keeper will not be interested in moving to London, and uprooting his family, who have settled well on Tyneside, and just love the area.
There is talk of a £6M bid from London, but that will not interest Kinnear one little bit.
Mind you Shay would be fantastic at Spurs, since he is as consistent a goalkeeper as you could imagine, and has experience galore, having played over 90 times for Ireland, and also in the European Champions League, when Bobby Robson was managing the club.
Joe Kinnear said today:
“I can save Harry the time and money and tell him not to bother even picking up the telephone, because there is no way Shay Given will be leaving this football club.”
“We want to build up Newcastle United and get good players in, not good players out.” “And why would he want to go to Spurs? This is a bigger club than Spurs.”
Oh, we hope that last sentence doesn’t start big arguments about which is the bigger club, and all that stuff. 😀
They’re both very good clubs, and certainly Harry has done a fantastic job since taking over at Spurs, having secured a second home win against Liverpool earlier this week in the Carling Cup.
But as far as Shay is concerned – dream on Harry.
Comments welcome.

Comment #4There’s a certain Steven Harper who is way too good to be a benchwarmer. I’d hate to see him go but I feel he’s wasting his talent at Newcastle really. And we have Krul, Soderberg and Forster coming through the ranks, so we have ample cover.

Comment #6Yes, and Keegan told O’Neill not to even bother phoning about Milner…..trouble is Ashley had other ideas. Ultimately if Spurs put in a decent bid for Given, Ashley will bite their hands off and there’s nothing Kinnear can do.

Comment #8Jezza – Yeah, but Given would have to agree to go. Otherwise he’s still under contract here.

Comment #9I dont think Ashley will sell Given or Owen etc for the following reasons:
1) He wont be here when that time comes.
2) He wont want to sell some of the clubs most valuable assets incase he scares off potential buyers.

Comment #17He’s not going to Spurs..it’s not a bigger club, it’s got less potential then we do.
But if Arsenal or United came a long, I think, I honestly think he should go. But Spurs..lol..not a chance.
He’s too good for us, he is our most important player, he keeps a keeper on the bench who would be no.1 in a lot of other clubs and is the most consistant..without a doubt, keeper in the premiership. He’s our best player. Owen may get the headlines, but Given could make countless important saves in a game and get only a wee bit of credit a few lines under Owen plastered on the top of the page.
I feel sorry for the wee lad I do. He is an outstanding keeper and yet he’s kept what, 3 clean sheets..it doesn’t reflect him at all. I feel sorry for him, because he’s to put up with the likes of Taylor and Co. in front, and Bramble through the years..How disheartening most that be.
He’d be outstanding for 90 plus mins, yet we could loose 3-0, only conceding through stupid goals, stupid mistakes from the headless chickens in front of him who call themselves defenders, the leave him so exposed. He’ll get injured again if they keep it up.
Our penalty count is ridiculous for this time of the season. He hates them (as ya do,) he sees them as cheap goals, and free kicks. Yet how many have we seen this season.
But regardless of all of that , the lad though he’s good enough to be the no.1 at probably every club in Europe, he’ll still stay with us, even if we get relegated.
If, God forbid we do, I’d almost push him and Harper out the door, because they are by far too good for that.

Comment #18Believe you me, if the club is going to stay in Ashley’s hands Given will leave, he is no mug and won’t just put up with this.
Past comments include what players are coming in, and what direction we are going in.
Don’t be fooled Given wants progress and under Cashley there is none

Comment #21Have to agree with Jezza. If Ashley wants to sell Given to Redknapp, there’s not a thing JFK can do about it – Could Keegan?
There’s probably better keeper cover if Given were to leave than any time I can remember so MA and DW might well think it a good move to cash in on a keeper in his prime.
Only thing keeping Shay here is Shay himself. Long may he stay.

If JFK thinks he has any influence with MA and DW where there’s a buck to be made, he’s sadly mistaken. Keegan had none.
I hear it turns out we’ve scuppered our chances with yet another US investor after Mickey Mouse declared he had no interest in owning the club following hints in a recent Kinnear interview that a bid may be imminent. However, following disparaging remarks comparing the Hollywood celebrity to referee Martin Atkinson, an article in The Daily Mail (“Mickey Pulls Oot”) reports the ‘toon has snubbed the Toon.

Comment #23If we get the right offer for Given, then he’ll be sold if MA is still around. We have Harper, Krull, etc on the bench so there’s adequate cover at this time.
Hoping we can sell Smith, Viduka, Cacapa, maybe Geremi and Owen in January but only if we buy replacements for them in the same transfer window…..
We can not weeken this squad further or we’ll be playing our football in the Championship next season!

Comment #24Whose the twit who claims newcastle have more potential? Given has never won a trophy in his career and now would be a good time to leave with the club in turmoil. He is quality and i would welcome him with open arms.
Tom toon (resident scout) claims Krul is going to be better so it would be a good deal for newcastle if a large bid is made.

Comment #26ERRR . . . according to Joe Kinnear! I don’t know in which dimension he is referring to but the one we all exist in this statement just makes him look foolish! I feel let down a little by someone I used to think was an old skool Yid!
Yeah, all those European competitions won by . . . Newcastle ? ? ?
Newcastle haven’t even ever won the league cup, and only ever got to the final once . . . in 1976! Spurs have won it 4 times & are the joint 3rd best team ever in that competition.
We are also the 3rd most successful team ever in the FA cup behind Manchester United & Arsenal & above Liverpool, 3 of the so called ‘big 4’.
We’ve won the competition 8 times, the last time being in 1991. Newcastle have won it 6 times but the last time was in 1955!
Newcastle have won twice the number of titles we have with 4 to their name but their last title was in 1926-7 while ours, a year in which we also were the first team ever to do the double, was in 1960-1.
Don’t even get me started on Europe! UEFA probably don’t even know where Newcastle is ! The best Newcastle have ever won in Europe is the ‘Inter Cities Fairs Cup’ (basically the early version of the UEFA cup which we ourselves have won twice & once been runners-up since its inception in 1972 & were the first team EVER to win it in its current guise, a team that Joe was in!) & they did that only in 1969!
I could go on but I’m actually starting to feel sorry for Newcastle now. Poor old Joe Kinnear, he’s having delusions of grandeur! He’s obviously knows all this stuff as he played most of his career at Spurs under the great man Bill Nicholson so all I can summise is that Joe is Jealous. He must be wishing he was back at the Lane instead of stuck up North in England’s nether regions!
They do have a bigger stadium, I’ll give ’em that . . . but not for long!
