With Joe Kinnear being taken ill yesterday with what looks like problems with his heart again, look for all kinds of news, true or otherwise, about who could take over as manager of Newcastle from Joe Kinnear.
Steve Bruce – is local lad favorite in case Joe retires?
We have no idea if Joe will want to carry on at Newcastle, or even if his doctors would let him remain in one of the most stressful jobs in English Football.
We need stability at the club more than anything, and we really hope that Joe can carry on, because if he needs to be replaced, this will be our 5th manager in two years. 🙁
There is a story in the Sunday Sun this morning that Newcastle have lined up Mexican coach Javier Aguirre as a potential successor to Joe Kinnear, in case Joe quits this summer.
It may be that Joe will have to quit earlier than that, and that certainly would be a new challenge to Mike Ashley, because we’re still steeped in a relegation battle.
Javier Aguirre was controversially sacked by Atletico Madrid last week, and apparently the Newcastle hierarchy believe he could do a job at Newcastle United.
But we should be very careful about bringing in foreign coaches after a number of them, who have done well in their home countries, just cannot hack it in the Premier League – Juande Ramos of Spurs being the most recent one.
Juande is now managing at top club Real Madrid of all places, after being a complete disaster at Spurs.
Newcastle will need to draw up some contingency plans now, in case Joe decides not to take up the two year contract he has been offered.
The 50-year-old Mexican spent over two seasons in charge at Atletico, having landed the job by steering Osasuna into Europe via a fourth-place finish in La Liga.
Atletico were 4th last season, but this year has not been good, and after 6 games without a win, Aguirre was sacked.
But if Joe leaves there are much better candidates to take over, who have proven records in the Premier League.
The favorite would probably be Corbridge-born Steve Bruce of Wigan, and he will not turn down a second offer to manage the club he supported as a boy while growing up in Daisy Hill near Wallsend.
Steve’s learned his trade as a manager, after being one of the best English players never capped by his country, and he’s been through the mill a few times in management.
And he has become a better manager for it, and worked some miracles at Wigan in the last 12 months, and could certainly take the white heat – which is the Newcastle United manager’s job.
Alan Shearer will also be mentioned, but is unlikely to manage at Newcastle while Mike Ashley is owner, and of course Alan has never managed before, and would be a big risk.
And there’s always Mark Hughes, if he gets the sack by Manchester City.
Who do you think would be good, if Joe retires this summer or earlier?
Comments welcome.

Comment #2SVEN is the best choice for us I think.he got experience in English football and good with youngster also. Get Shearer to learn his trade too if possible.
Aguirre is good choice but it’s risk too (let’s see Juande Ramos)
How about to keep Joe in Director of football position.

Comment #3I reckon Shearer wouldbe a good manager because he has learned all about how every team in the Premiership plays by working on MOTD.
Also, the players would give 200% every game for him.
Finally, I think we would be able to bring better players in who want to work under one of the greatest plaers in history.
Thats just my opinion 😛

Joe can NOT take the post long term and this slight scare may be a blessing in disguise for both him and the fans, i mean that in the nicest possible way 😉
There may even be need for someone to come in, during the short term !
Whether its long or short term the one name that stands above all others for the majoity of fans would be Shearer.
Failing that i would like to see Bruce, he British and even better local and proven as a manager in the top flight.
I would not like to see us go foriegn, as much as there are foriegn managers who have top credentials, i’m not sure they would understand Newcastle United, plenty British coaches havent ie Big Sam !
Bruce or Shearer for me and i wouldnt be bothered which one!
p.s
please noone mention the ‘K’ word 😉

Comment #6i don’t think he will leave in the summer 2bh because next season with hopefully not as many players injured and some players coming through the door then we could be comfortably in mid table so obviously it will still be stressful tut it wont be as bad if not on in a relegation battle, plus with most of the summer off it will give Joe time to rest and prepare for next season !!, if you noticed we have seen Joe can do when he has nearly our best team out, because every time we have got a great result !! i.e pompey,villa,spurs,westbrom(2),chelsea, all of them results have come when we are getting close to gettin our best team out !!

Comment #9I think whatever happens, Joe might have to go at the end of the season anyway having seen the quality of the side under him….
anyway.. Aguirre is a bad idea i think, i’d rather steal martinez of swansea, or Fatih Terim.
I think getting a Geordie in might be an idea.. however i’m not sure about Bruce.. cos as we all know.. hes a manc. (I still hate them for what happened 95/96)

Brucie is not a winner ?
Have you seen his trophy cabnet ?
League titles, FA cups, legaue cups, cup winner cup medals.
As for management hes been up and down granted. But he won promotion with Birmingham after years in the wilderness and this season with Wigan has doen unbelievable!
Hand on heart i just want us to challenge again. Go back to winning games and playing the right way, will do me for now. Bruce plays the right way and his Wigan teams for the rag tag bunch hes put together play very well.

Comment #30I also would like to see JK have some role within the newcastle hierarchy… I think the players need familiar faces (i.e. I dont want a new manager coming in and getting rid of all the backroom staff – hughton and calderwood).
I believe I heard mourihno’s name mentioned?! Seriously…. Mourihno would never come to SJP-granted we are a big club, but we have been in turmoil over the past few years.
Very tricky decision this…. personally I believe if JK cannot continue as manager, then the next manager HAS to be one that will stay for the long term-I dont think many of our players could go through disturbance and distruption of the last 3 years again.
Personally, I’ve wanted O’Neill for a long long time to go to Newcastle. I know he isn’t local, and wouldnt want to come we could at least try.
Heck, just put Shearer as manager. At least all the fans would unite and get behind him!!

Comment #34My view is that we have two real options.
Either:-
Push the boat out and bring in a good quality manager and trust him (I’m looking at you Ashley) and Sven would be one of those given his experience of the English game.
This could be a chance to improve the general setup of the club and help all players at all levels of it and could also allow potential managers to come to the club as coaches and learn their trade and then we could promote from within instead of changing the manager, coaching staff, first team etc. Perhaps we could see former players like Shearer, Solano and Speed return in those roles.
Or
Gamble on a top young coach (Ketsbaia, Martinez?) and put an experienced coach to help get his points across well and replace Wise with someone more appropriate, like JK, who’ll help but also tell him when he’s being a bit of a numpty.
You can probably guess I prefer the first option but either would do well. Whatever way we turn though, one thing must be true, the manager must have a good knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the English game and if they’ve been at Newcastle before and experienced and atmosphere and passion we have, much the better.

Comment #40We need to look long term and build. I think we need to bring in someone who knows English football and can prepare for a relegation battle, but with promise… Coyle? He’s done a great job at Burnley.
Any talk of keeping Kinnear on just because he’s taken ill is a joke, he’s on the verge of taking a group of talented individuals down and has shown no sign of being a good manager. Get well soon, but jog on at the end of the season. I don’t see there being any reason to bring anyone in though until the summer when Hughes could be another option. Hughton should be able to Caretake us to survival – we only need 10 points in all reallity.
