Older AirPort Base Stations May Cause Networking Conflicts with MacBook Air, Other Issues Cited

Your older AirPort Base Station may be trustworthy, but it might not play nice with your new MacBook Air.

According to Macworld, the MacBook Air, though compatible with the 802.11n wireless networking standard, can become incompatible with older Apple Base Station networking units wherein their draft specification triggers what Apple calls a "wide" channel in the 2.6 GHz range. Once broadcast, this channel can interfere with the MacBook Air's wireless networking functions, which conform to more recent draft specifications.

Responding to the issue, Apple has recommended that users change their Base Station to use a 5 GHz channel via the Airport utility programs or upgrade the Base Station to a newer model.

Other problems that may emerge with the new laptop include jumpy or jerky video emerging when using the MacBook Air's built-in iSight camera. The problem has been seen in the MacBook Air, QuickTime Player Pro and iMovie and can be resolved by downloading and installing QuickTime 7.4.

In cases where the MacBook Air has been used for prolonged periods of time, the computer may slow down. This has been diagnosed as the hardware's effort to protect itself from overheating by shutting down one core of the CPU. Apple has also stated that in extreme conditions, the MacBook Air may also reduce the clock rate of its remaining core. The company has suggested moving the computer to a cooler area or using a notebook cooling pad to dissipate the unit's heat.

Finally, Apple has outlined an issue in which some 3.5 millimeter headphone jacks don not fit securely in the MacBook Air's built-in port, resulting in poor audio quality. Apple has recommended buying an adapter to extend the port and thereby resolve the problem.

If you've gotten your hands on a MacBook Air and can add to these issues or offer solutions for other problems, let us know in the comments or forums.
