New to the Charts: TS-S402 2-Bay SATA I/II Network Storage Enclosure Updated

Trendnet's TS-S402 2-Bay SATA I/II Network Storage Enclosure represents the high end of the company's networked storage products. But, similar to many other Trendnet products that we've reviewed, the build quality definitely conveys a generic OEM feel.

The NAS is surprisingly small, but the plastic front cover feels flimsy and the glossy black finish is a fingerprint magnet.

The TS-S402 is a dual-drive BYOD SATA NAS that supports separate drive, JBOD and RAID 0 and 1 modes. It is powered by a Marvell 88F5182 (not an RDC 3210 as earlier indicated) and has a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port via a Marvell 88E1118. Jumbo frames are not supported. 32 MB of RAM and 4 MB of flash finish the design.

Both SMB/CIFS and NFS network file sharing is supported, as is FTP. But shares are not browsable via HTTP or HTTPs. There are also UPnP AV and iTunes media servers, USB print server and built-in BitTorrent download client (no FTP or HTTP downloads supported).

Average RAID 1 Write speed for 32 MB - 1 GB file sizes with a gigabit LAN connection is just shy of 11 MBytes/sec, which better than Buffalo's LinkStation Pro Duo and about the same as HP's new Media Vaults. Read speed for the same test configuration averaged 13.5 MBytes/sec, which is slightly better than the Synology DS207 and D-Link DNS-323.

We'll be doing a full review soon, but in the meantime you can also use the NAS Charts to run your own comparisons and find screenshots, test results and internal details in the slideshow.
