I'm writing from the Washington Convention Center in DC, trading (from what I've been told) is a gorgeous day in Austin for a chilly overcast afternoon in the nation's capitol. It is not only the weather that is cloudy, the newspaper industry- still reeling from the collapse of their traditional business model- is holding their annual meeting here and news is not good. With adverting dollars increasing difficult to come by there is a huge debate about the future of the industry and the role "citizen journalists" play.

Of course, I'm coming at it from a social media perspective so I look at it from a slightly different perspective: Specifically, what are newspapers going to do to service their core community? After all, that's what the print media did originally. We here at Small World Labs are no strangers to this issue and we're very proud of our work with the Dallas Morning News and their Neighborsgo property. *Update* My live blogging efforts are being stymied by internet connectivity issues. You can follow me on Twitter @sameder for updates through out the show. Right now I'd give the show a B- as it has scheduled a bunch of social media related panels against each other making those of us who are interest in the subject make hard decisions. The content is bad, albeit tilted slightly towards new adopters.

Right now I'm sitting in the "Evolving Digital Media" panel that was scheduled head to head with "Melding fragmented audiences". It is a quarter full right now.

OK, Day 1 is done and the mark for the show is "b" to "b-". The slight uptick is due to the innovation and leadership the smaller pubs are demonstrating in new/social media. Talking to Gina Wilcox, Director of Digital Operations for the Palm Beach Post, it is clear that she believes that the future is bright for properties that innovate. Her quote: "People shouldn't be talking about doom and gloom here. We should be looking at these new mediums and thinking 'What next?'."
