What is Jason Taylor worth?
I've been a firm believer that Jason Taylor was on the trading block ever since the season ended.
Sure Bill Parcells said he favors "keeping good players," and Taylor ideally fits that Lawrence Taylor pass rushing role Parcells' 3-4 scheme needs to be effective attacking offenses.
But Taylor's done his time in Miami. He's been the good soldier to most regimes (even Cam Cameron's). He clearly doesn't want to be part of another rebuilding project. And in my opinion, he deserves to be set free, traded to a contender, but for the right price?
Because Taylor has two years left on his deal, and is presently looking for that last GOOD contract extension, I figured this offseason was the right time to move him.
But at what price?
Yes I've heard the Green Bay trade speculation that would bring the Dolphins the Packers second and fourth round picks. From what we're hearing there's nothing to it (which could be true, and could be false).
At the NFL combine last week one executive, who admitted he has a level of interest in Taylor, told me he hadn't talked directly to the Dolphins about the six-time Pro Bowl selection. But he had been told by another club that happened to ask about Taylor that the Dolphins weren't fielding offers.
I was told by another NFL source that Parcells and company couldn't justify to the South Florida fan base getting rid of Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor in the same year, and that argument made a lot of sense. Without Thomas and Taylor exactly who does this franchise sell in 2008? Ricky Williams?
However, another source told me this weekend that the Dolphins are "dangling" Taylor out there to get "a taste of" what the pass rushing specialist would bring in a trade. If the Dolphins add Calvin Pace - who for the record I'm not sold on because he's had one good season, and it just so happened to be in a contract year - there becomes a surplus of pass rushing "jacks."
Quentin Moses is a keeper. I'm told Parcells likes him and thinks he can be developed. The team is on the hook for last offseason's signing of Joey Porter, who I think still might have a couple of good seasons left based on how he finished out 2007.
Adding Pace might make Taylor expendable.
Truth is, I really don't know what to believe, and that includes coming to a consensus on what trading away the Dolphins' marquee player should bring.
Exactly how do you get equal value for a defensive end who is one year removed from being the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year, and is coming off a Pro Bowl season.
A second and fourth round selection does sound fair, but both of Green Bay's picks are fairly low. They might as well be a third and fifth. But is that fair value for JT?
What is the least you would find acceptable for Taylor? And should the Dolphins let him get a vote on his possible landing spot? Green Bay certainly wouldn't be my first pick.
No offense to all the cheese heads out there but South Florida to Wisconsin is a tough transition for anyone.
Deuces.

1st ROUND PICK!! NO LESS! OTHERWISE...KEEP HIM. Real simple.
Posted by: Alexander | March 01, 2008 at 04:56 PM
YES!!!! JT has been a fantastic Dolphin, but we are clearly going in a different direction, and 3 2nd round picks would be tremendous. We could try to grab Joe Flacco, an o lineman and a d lineman in that round. A tight end would even be nice. Or a WR. You get my point. We need to get younger and trim the fat, and at this point, that is exactly what JT is. Bring on a 2nd and 4th and let us say goodbye to JT, the greatest Dolphin since Dan Marino.

A high second, or next years first and this years 3rd or 4th, otherwise let him retire a dolphin.

Omar:
Don't mind trade talk - but it better be good. But you are about the 10th commentator that says something like "he's put in his time and deserves to go to a good team". If I hear this again I think I am going to hurl. How about the fans? We've "put in our time" as well, but no trade there.
Jason was paid very well for his time. He got what he was owed. Screw this talk about him being "owed" a chance for the Superbowl. The fans are owed a chance for a Superbowl. If trading him helps get one, then trade him. But no self-sacrificing BS so the fans can cheer while poor Jason wins a Superbowl for Pats.
Posted by: mjfin | March 01, 2008 at 05:07 PM
Jason Taylor's leadership is priceless!! And the last remaining member of Jimmy Johnsons awsomeness should be able to retire a dolphin!!
I personaly feel that Joey Porter is the one we should be talking about! That guy is the one who should be on the trading block! If some team would be willing to take on some of his signing bounes an a pick, get ride of him!! If Jason Taylor had to go, he is worth no less then a 1st rounder this year an a conditional 3rd next year, that will turn into a 1st!! JT for president!!
Posted by: Christopher | March 01, 2008 at 05:08 PM
Sorry, but do you guys see the trades that get made? No way is anybody going to give up a 1st round pick for Taylor. NO WAY... Stop dreaming. A 2nd and a 4th is about all we would get for his age and salary... If they tade him they trade him. I wouldn't mind getting two more players. He will retire or be done in 2 -3 years anyway and we aren't going to the Super Bowl in 2 or 3 years. Great guy, great player, but that's the reality...
Posted by: Paul | March 01, 2008 at 05:38 PM
Jimmy Johnson's awesomeness??? Give me a break. Jimmy did more wrong than right for this franchise. Anyways, if the right deal comes along for Jason, then trade him.
I wish it was Joey Porter that could be released or traded, but in doing so would put a huge dent in our cap space. We're tied to Joey Porter, for better or for wose.
Posted by: SAVE_US.Y2J | March 01, 2008 at 05:41 PM
A mid second roung pick, or send him to Dallas with the # 1 pick for their 2 first rounders and 4-5 other first day picks over the next two years.
Posted by: Grey | March 01, 2008 at 05:41 PM
Chad Johnson sucks. Cinncinati already said they wouldn't trade him. Shut up with all of the Chad talk, already.
Posted by: The Real Deal | March 01, 2008 at 05:43 PM
I'm going to play devil's advocate ... but Jason has been a negative influence in the locker room, particularly toward the incompetent Coach Cam. He was a Saban loyalist who didn't care for the new boss, and it showed in his lackluster play all season.
Plus, I think Jason is playing this game to get traded.
I think Jason is one of the true stars on the team, but he is also getting old in the teeth and thinking about his future outside football, hince his putting on dancing shoes this spring.
At the risk of being villified for Jason's legions of fans, I think it is time to part company with him ASAP. I doubt that we can get a first-round pick for him, but two middle round picks would do the job for me, especially if we shipped him to a team drafting high like we are.
Get value out of the trade, though, don't cut him.
Lastly, I think any trade will depend on if we sign Pace.

i'm sick of the ignorant joey porter bashing. he was wrongly utilized last year either down as an end or dropped back in pass coverage - and he was rehabbing a knee. porter is a pure edge rushing 3-4 backer and if ever put in that position again and healthy, you will all be eating giant plates of joe crow!
Posted by: original | March 01, 2008 at 05:52 PM
I would not trade my best pass rusher for less than a 1 and a 3. Remember when Dave traded Wale for Booker and a third? Those days are over.
Posted by: Rainbird | March 01, 2008 at 05:59 PM
Keep Jason Taylor, you won't get enough in a trade to compensate for his loss as a player to the Dolphins. If he wants to go, then make every effort to trade him to another team, otherwise he deserves to retire a Dolphin and he deserves to have his number retired when he finally steps down.
Posted by: JBC | March 01, 2008 at 06:25 PM
Why is it exactly that you, Omar, find it unnecessary to proof read your postings? This thing is almost illegible.

Alexander said, "trim the fat and at this point that is exactly what J.T. is"
WHAT AN IDIOT!!!
J.T. is not now, nor will he ever be fat that needs trimmed. Trade hime for several pieces to the puzzel, but do not waste him!
Posted by: Ken | March 01, 2008 at 06:53 PM
I say if the Phins are going with a 3-4 scheme then keep Jason Taylor as he excelled in that D in 2006 and he has a few good years to go. He is the best Dolphins' player since Dan Marino and just as Dan did, JT should retire a Dolphin.
I don't think any team will be willing to give up a Second round pick for JT, considering his salary.
Posted by: Eddie | March 01, 2008 at 07:03 PM
jasons value is as a veteran on this team zach had serious health concerns for somone trusted to holding down the middle i hated to see him go but cutting jt is just plain stupid trade or anything else he is a primere pass rusher and the only leader left on this squad

Its sad to say, but Taylor needs to get traded, if the Dolphins want to be any good in 3 years. However, no one is going to give up a 1st rounder for him, but I would accept nothing less than 2 second rounders. Or send him to Dallas along with the #1 overall pick, for both of their first rounders, and a top player, like Ware or Barber

Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has already moved away from South Florida. The only thing left is to figure out his next address.
Three sources close to the Dolphins organization said this week that Taylor and the team he has been part of for 11 years have graciously agreed to part ways between now and the NFL draft April 26. There’s no animosity between Taylor and new Dolphins guru Bill Parcells or coach Tony Sparano.
There are just plans that each side has. Those plans don’t include each other.
For the Dolphins, who are still stinging from the worst year in team history, the plan is to get younger, both through the draft and free agency. The Dolphins have signed six players in the first two days of free agency, none of them household names. They range from quarterback Josh McCown to linebacker Reggie Torbor to defensive tackle Randy Starks.
With the exception of McCown, who is still a relatively young 28 for a quarterback, all of those players are 27 or younger. All have been brought in to replenish a roster that was turned hollow by the poor drafting of Dave Wannstedt from 2000 to 2004. Nick Saban wasn’t great in 2005 and 2006 and the jury is still out on Randy Mueller’s draft in 2007, but the fact is that going 1-15 in the NFL of today requires a lot of bad work over a long period of time.
That’s why the Dolphins, even with a truckload of cap room, have been conspicuously absent in the sweepstakes for top linemen such as Alan Faneca and Flozell Adams. Both are Parcells-type guys, big, tough, nasty and smart. Furthermore, Parcells’ M.O. is to build the offensive line.
They’re also both over 30 and after taking a couple of months to analyze the Dolphins roster, Parcells knows that he has a long-term project on his hands. There’s a very good chance the Dolphins won’t be good again until after Faneca and Adams are done as players.
True, the Dolphins did trade for 33-year-old defensive tackle Jason Ferguson, but there are other reasons for that. Ferguson came cheap (he essentially cost Miami a sixth-round pick in 2009), he’s a stopgap at defensive tackle (a spot where the Dolphins are truly horrible right now) and he’s a Parcells guy, having played for five years under Parcells. Ferguson is the type of guy who can help instill the work ethic and focus Parcells wants for the roster.
That brings the whole thing back to Taylor, who is 33 and will be 34 before next season begins. Taylor has averaged 11½ sacks over his career and has had at least 11 in six of the past eight years. He was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 and was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year last season for all his charitable work and public service.
Taylor knows the end of his career is near and he’s already beginning his transition. He told the Dolphins a month ago that he was going to take part in the “Dancing With the Stars” television series. For that, Taylor has already moved to Los Angeles to prepare and he could be on the show until mid-May, cutting significantly into any offseason program with the Dolphins.
Last month, Taylor appeared on Oprah. Last year, Taylor was the face of the NFL when the league was promoting the Dolphins-New York Giants game in London.
And what a face to use. In 2001, Taylor was featured by Sports Illustrated as one of the “Ten Sexiest Athletes” in sports. He has done movie appearances, has been a pitchman for companies like Neutrogena and has had an eye on Hollywood for as long as he has played.
One can’t blame him for that. Making $8 million for a movie is a lot easier than chasing quarterbacks for the same money. Taylor has two years left on a contract that pays him $7.5 million this season and $8 million in 2008.
Not that the Dolphins can’t afford that money, but they need players for the long-term a lot more. Taylor isn’t interested in the long-term. If he’s going to play – and that is an “if” – he wants to do it for a team that will contend.
That’s why an Internet rumor that made the rounds Saturday about Taylor going to Green Bay makes some sense. It’s premature, but it’s logical. Beyond that, the stated price of a second- and fourth-round pick for Taylor is low. Heck, if Justin Smith can get $65 million from San Francisco, the Dolphins should be able to get at least a first-round pick for Taylor.
Of course, all of that remains to be seen. But be sure of one thing, just as Taylor will be seen dancing by millions of viewers over the coming weeks, his name will be in trade talks held behind closed doors.

I would take a 2nd rounder. He wont be here when we are good again. He might as well be somewhere else while he still has some good left.
Posted by: Daniel | March 01, 2008 at 08:52 PM
a 2nd this year and a 2nd next year would suffice.
Thanks for the memories JT, but go try to win a Championship elsewhere while you have the chance.
Posted by: Pete | March 01, 2008 at 09:07 PM
I would want to build for the future with a JT trade and try to get a 2 in 2008 and a 2 in 2009. I do think he w/b worth that to a team that is close like GB. JT will be sorely missed, but after 1-15, I am open to anything that is looking past 2007 and even 2008.

He is definately worth a 1st Rd pick. Where would Jason Taylor rank in this year's class of DE/OLB? Probably top of the class, but then you consider his age. A 2nd and a 4th does sound fair, but not GB's picks. I agree with one response, it depends where they're picks are. This draft is deep, but I could be sold on a 3rd Rd and 7th Rd this year, and a 2nd Rd pick in 2009. I know that is potentially 3 players, but Jason is only going to want to go to a playoff-ready team, so he does have leverage. He'll give them 2 good years, and he's worth 2 picks this year, and 1 pick in 2009. If someone offers a 1st Rd pick this year, we'll have to consider it.

If the dolphins do trade JT to the Pack considering how late their 1st round pick is, that is what the Pack would have to give up. Forget about the 2nd and 4th just give us their 1st then draft Rodgers Cromarte or James Hardy (He Is Gonna Be A Stud....MARK MY WORDS)

I love how you guys just follow the rumors and base all of your decisions on what someone heard. J.Taylor is our best player, period. We can't get value for him in any trade, he is too old for a 1st and he makes a ton of money. I am in favor of keeping Taylor. C.Pace does not replace J.Taylor, sorry. This is one of the things that has bothered me about the Dolphins for years. They get rid of good players and never have a replacement on their current roster. They always go searching for someone. Everybody is screaming C.Long like he is the next L.Taylor or something!!! Who will be the leader of this team if J.Taylor is traded? J.Taylor is still productive and will be for 2 more years.

The Zach release was probably a premeditated arrangement b/t B.P.and J.Jones as a dwn.pymnt.for the staff..It wouldn't surprise me @ all if J.T.is reunited w/Zach in Dall.for their second 1st rnd pk..Or @least their two#one's plus numerous other(plyrs/pks)for our top 5 pk.and J.T....Their a J.T.and McFadden short of the S.B.!!We are several Miami and Dallas high draft pks shy!!We can recover overnight should such a BLOCKBUSTER take place!! Some of those plyrs will fill the stands with excitement just like ZACH and J.T.have for the past decade!! And w/a football mind @ the helm it won't take long b/4 a Dolphin Q.B.excites the fans tooo!GO PARCELLS!GOFINS

No ones arguing that JT isen't a leader, great player, ext. ext. but the bottom line is the Phins are no where close to being a Superbowl caliber team. So why keep JT? when we could trade him and hopefully get some good players with those picks. JT playing on the Phins for the next two to three years does nothing for us we need to get more players through the draft, cut him loose and let the rebuilding begin, again!

Posted by: jason | March 01, 2008 at 11:22 PM
The NFL is a copy cat league and NY's pass rush is about to be copied by all kinds of teams. Teams that are "close" to a title run will give a nice price for a pass rusher like Jason Taylor who is hungry to go out on top. I'd love to see Dallas come calling for him. He and Zach could make one last run together.
Posted by: JJF | March 01, 2008 at 11:25 PM
Read the report and my first reaction was a semi-heart attack! When you see a report stating that Miami and JT are "parting ways" it sounded like he was being released... Before this announcement, I would have said 2nd and 3rd. Now, I would say a 2nd this year and conditional next year (4th upgradeable to 2nd based on performance).
Posted by: Matt | March 01, 2008 at 11:28 PM
There are two things I do believe.
1. Any team that gets into the Jason taylor sweep stakes will likely be asked to renegotate a deal. JT wants that last big contract. He's due to make a little under $16 million for the next two seasons.
That's pretty decent, but in this market he could break the bank one last time.
2. I don't think the Dolphins will consider many teams in the AFC. So that does NFC teams are the frontrunners.
I'm guessing Dallas, 49ers, Philly, GIANTS (especially if Strahan walks), New Orleans, Chargers, Denver and maybe Jacksonville.

Posted by: bryan in ohio | March 01, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Forget Chris long he will be 26 as a rookie, they need a franchise LT excpecially if they pay number 30+ million with that first pick. JAKE LONG IS THE SAFEST PICK WITH THE NUMBER 1 OVERALL SPOT!!!
Posted by: !?!?!?!?!?! | March 01, 2008 at 11:38 PM
For whatever it's worth, and it can't be much, Arizona fans are not that impressed with Calvin Pace. Basically he held a spot on the team until injury forced him in and he ended up doing pretty well, which also happened to be his contract year...I love the size and if Parcells likes him, that's enough for me, but to give this guy a Joey Porter type Contract might be a mistake....let's not get too worked up if he ends up signing with the Jets. Plus, having JT's replacement signed, sealed and delivered before we actually trade JT can't help our asking price. I hate to see JT go, but look forward to the continued youth movement.

No, we would get their two 1st round picks, their 2nd rounder, and Jason Whitten. Why get Marion Barber? We have Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, and Lorenzo Booker. A rb is the last thing we need on our roster we need a solid te, and extra draft picks, so its not crazy talk its a resonable trade that I would like to see but it would prolly never happen because Whitten is their security blanket.

Omar:
Didn't Shockey refer to Parcells as a "Homo" at one point? Also Shockey is still hurt so that deal would have to be done a little bit later because I can't see him passing a physical.
49ers are out of it... they just signed Smith to a big deal.. I just don't think they have the cash.
The Giants can move Kiwanuka to DE if Strahan retires.. I don't think hes really worth it at the LB position anyways.
Dallas? They have no need for JT (they play a 3-4 so JT would have to be a LB)... They have Ware on the left side and Ellis (12.5 sacks last year) on the right backed up by last years 1st round pick spencer.
NO? They broke the bank last year for Charles Grant after franchising him. He had a bad year but hes not going anywhere with the amount of money he is owed. THen you throw in Will Smith and its not a need for them.
I would put Minnesota on your list of teams. They have been picking DEs in the first round that don't work out for awhile now. Udeze was also diagnosed with leukemia.
Eagles just dumped Kearse so they could be in the market. Denver has been looking for a pass rush for a long time.
Carolina is in the market for a DE... Peppers/Taylor would be pretty nasty.
SD is probably out because they don't have a 2nd round pick because of the Chambers deal. While Taylor maybe could get up to a 1st round pick i'm not sure the Chargers would be fond of going the first 2 rounds without a pick.
Its too bad this happened so late. The browns were trading their draft picks like candy. Actually made me wonder if Speilman and Wannstedt were running the show.

"Forget Chris long he will be 26 as a rookie, they need a franchise LT excpecially if they pay number 30+ million with that first pick. JAKE LONG IS THE SAFEST PICK WITH THE NUMBER 1 OVERALL SPOT!!!"
Not sure where you got that number but Chris Long is 22 and will be 23 sometime next month. He is a whole 2 months older than Jake Long. Not saying Chris Long should be the pick but hes definately not 26 like our "young" QB John Beck.

I think he'll end up in Dallas for one of their first rounders. They are late picks so it would be near the same as a high 2. I knew with all the OLB signings this would happen. He'll go join Zach in Dally for a title run, Miami will draft Chris Long with their first 1 (hopefully after suckering ATL or OAK in a deal and adding Hall or Huff) and then with the first rounder from Dallas they'll draft the LT they so badly need.

SD dosen't have a 3rd either, they gave that away when they traded up with the Bears last years draft to get eric wedell

I think we need to look at either Dallas, because of the simple fact that they have two first round picks, maybe San Diego. We have built up an understanding with both of those franchises. Or I hate to say it but trading him to New England for their first round pick from San Fran would be a good move and give him that chance to get that ring that he deserves. Jason is worth a 1st round pick. Whether it be at this years or next years draft. Period. He is a monster at the line and at the very least he demands the repsect of a double team so another defensive player can get a chance to shine. He can improve any defense he goes to. But to get what the Packers are offering is just plain CRAZY!

Bro,the 26th pk,and Whitten to drop down from #1 to #20 is nuts..The 2nd rndr would equate to J.T.,thats nuts..R.Brown has an injury that has a prescribed 18 mnths recovery b/4 returning to 100%,especially for a R.B.,If not physically, definately mentally!! Ricky Williams is,Well Ricky Williams, and a major contributor to the FINS futility since his signing, and L.Booker is a 3rd down back..I'll take Barber over Whitten 24/7/365,and when Browns 100% then and only then will R.B.be our last worry on the list..Luv Brown,Ricky,Lorenzo, but @ this moment none can be counted on in"08"!!I like Whitten too,but Barber's an absolute STUD as is a healthy Brown..With your scenario, they'd have to give me Barber and Whitten @least on top of what your saying..

I think JT should fetch a low second or a high first. I also thik we should trade down with the pick and pick gholston. He is awesome

Jeremy Shockey? WHY? Because we need poor attitude players whose very absence improves their team (see 2007 New York Giants)? This sounds like the people who wanted the Dolphins to trade for a linebacker, Jonathan Vilma, who has proven to be a poor fit with a 3-4 defense. So why would Dolphin fans want him? And why Shockey? Oh, of course, Shockey (like Vilma) is a UM Hurricane. Bring 'em on, Omar! And Mike Rumph too! And the Dolphins' QB of the future, Kyle Wright!

ESPN just reported that Bill Parcells said that Jason Taylor is staying a Dolphin. Fans would be pissed if both Zake and Jason were traded this season.

If the price is right, the Dolphins should try to move Jason Taylor to a team other than New England that is capable of being a championship contender. I love Taylor. He's been one of the best players for Miami since he was drafted. However, the Dolphins have so many holes to fill from previous coaching regimes draft and free agent blunders. Plus the fact Taylor is 34 years old and been nicked up the past few years further justifys the possibility of a trade opportunity. I think the Dolphins should request a first round draft choice and at the very least, a high second and fourth round pick--considering what New England gave up for lesser known Wes Welker in 2007. If Bill Parcells is entertaining this idea, I certainly think it's the right decision.

Trade him for no less than a first round pick. That easy. If a team thinks they can win now and he brings an added piece, than they will pony it up. Otherwise he's too valuable in terms of both skill and leadership.

Jason Taylor is and has been the Face of the Dolphins since Marino retired . He deserves to be traded if he so wishes . To a contender is not unreasonable . If that is to be the situation , I would say a 1st and 3rd rounder would be fair since all contenders have low picks . Knowing Taylor , he may have 4 years left . I would hope this is all just rumors and media conjecture though . Trading Jason Taylor is very hard to consume as a fan . Who will the fans be paying to see ? This could also have an effect on who will be the first pick in the draft . And that will set us back further . No sense in not protecting the quarterback first .

The Dolphins should also trade John Beck as well. Beck is not NFL starting QB material. Plus he is a product of Cam Cameron, something the new regime wants to get rid of. Sparano probably wants his own QB to mold, so look for the Dolphins pick a quarterback in this years draft.
The best thing would be to trade John Beck and Jason Taylor and get as many draft pick as we can. The Kid. Goodbye.

I am so glad none of you guys are the Dolphins' General Manager. We would be doomed for another 10 years !!! We do not need to trade for anybody!!! Let's just use our draft picks correctly and improve. Is that too much to ask?

Can't believe I agree with T.Way.
But, this blog is for the dummies that can't let go of their "star" --- "face-of-the franchise".
He's an expensive, light-weight, long-in-the-tooth (agree w Ken in SD) 34 yr old tweener with a bad attitude that wants out.
Parcells is the new face of the franchise. This is the Tuna-Dolphins and JT's mouth will be shut. Why do you think he wants out anyway?
JT was a 3rd rounder. He can be plugged in somewhere for 2 yrs. That's worth max....2 3rd rounders. Or we'd probably take a 2nd & 4th. Remember, he's skinny, old, and expensive. Be realistic people. He is not perfect or we'd keep him.
He has a price tag...just like every other player.
Posted by: CB | March 02, 2008 at 10:51 PM
We won't be any good for at least the next three years. Having JT on the team gives us what, 2 extra wins? We still won't make the playoffs anyway.I love JT, but TRADE HIM NOW while there's still value. Him going to a contender would obviously bring us low picks, but we have so many holes to fill we need all the picks we can get.Time to start over baby!!
