Ever wonder....

One of Bill Parcells' former players recently told me the Dolphins new warden is a firm believer that when an athlete starts setting himself up for life after football Parcells concludes "he's done."

Outside of Parcells' machismo image, and button pushing nature, ever wonder if that's at the heart of his cold war with Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor?

Ever wonder if Jason Taylor would really sit out this year, retiring to pursue other ventures?

That's what his camp has been floating out there for a while. And that threat actually put General Manager Jeff Ireland in a brief panic for a few minutes at the owner's meetings when ProFootballtalk did that April fools joke earlier this spring.

Ever wonder if the Dolphins are prepared to play this season without Taylor? Was that what the pursuit of Calvin Pace was about? And could Charlie Anderson or Quentin Moses really fill that role? Is that why the position wasn't addressed in the 2008 draft?

Ever wonder if the possibility that Taylor could walk away from the game was the reason the Dolphins got Dallas to throw in Akin Adoyele, a former outside linebacker, in that predraft deal that brought Miami tight end Anthony Fasano, and Adoyele, two possible starters for a fourth round pick the Dolphins eventually got back when they shipped Lorenzo Booker to the Eagles?

Ever wonder what platform winning Dancing With The Stars has created for past winners? Has anyone heard from Kelly Monaco, season 1 winner since? It's not like Drew Lachey's career took off after he won season 2. And if you're saying who, that's the point? Emmitt Smith won season 3 and I'd be willing to bet he got his ESPN gig based on what he did on the football field, not the dance floor. Ever wonder how Smith's bad start with ESPN has allowed him to keep his job?

Ever wonder if Dan Marino really meant what he said last night when he told Taylor "if you don't bring back the mirror ball (the trophy that comes with the title) don't come home."

If you missed it check out this video.

">Jason Taylor Dancing Week 9

Ever wonder if you're eventually going to have to pick sides in this Parcells-Taylor beef, and which side would you be on?

Are you with the grump new boss who wants his star player sweating with the team during voluntary workouts, being a leader and proving he's still got the heart and ability to play.

Or are you with the aging, proven veteran who has developed a new habit of putting himself before his team, privately requesting a trade that wasn't granted, and prematurely working to create a second career for himself before his first has officially concluded.

Enough of the Jason Taylor talk.... Here are some more things I've been wondering....

Ever wonder if Parcells will get the coaching itch again and want to take over the Dolphins if Tony Sparano stumbles after his first season.

While I know Parcells is digging the mentorship role he's playing, and says the NFL's now a "young man's game," watching him roam the field during the rookie minicamp actually made me think he'll eventually want to scratch that itch.

Will meddling on a daily basis do it? And will Sparano eventually turn a deaf ear to the master chef who is routinely looking over his shoulder while he's trying to prepare the meal?

Ever wonder if Cam Cameron will ever get another head coaching job in the NFL?

While Cameron was a complete disaster with the Dolphins, narrowly avoiding the first 0-16 season in NFL history, if the Ravens become instant contenders (I think they can because of that defense and Willis McGahee) and Joe Flacco becomes a Pro Bowl quarterback in time (I think he can), it could happen.

Cameron could excuse last season by saying, "Look what I was given to work with," and it would be hard to argue against that considering Nick Saban saw the writing on the wall and bolted for Alabama before it REALLY got bad.

Ever wonder if Ricky Williams could still put together a 1,000 yard rushing season?

He is 30, but has taken so many years off from the NFL he's got plenty of tread left on his tires. He's also never suffered an ACL tear, which is the main killer of a running back's career.

But Williams rushed for just 526 yards and two touchdowns on his 109 CFL carries in an injury-shortened 2006 season he spent across the border.

However, outside of the absence of his dreads, he physically doesn't look much different now than he did eight years ago. Ever wonder if his secrets been the yoga?

Ricky Williams and Bikini-clad Woman

Are you like me, have you been wondering what's left of the running backs in that 1999 draft class that featured Williams?

Former Hurricanes standout Edgerrin James, who was taken one spot ahead of Williams, is still going, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the seventh time last season. But it's hard to argue against James preparing to author the final few chapters of his career this season.

James Johnson, the next tailback taken after Williams (coincidentally by the Dolphins in the second round...dope...), was out of the league after only three seasons. Kevin Faulk, taken by New England with pick No. 46, is still going strong. But Faulk's never been a featured back in the NFL.

Outside of the above mentioned named, the only backs from that draft worth mentioning are Rob Konrad, Cecil Collins, Sedrick Irvin, and Autry Denson, and that's only because they each played for the Dolphins.

Outside of Williams, James and Faulk, Konrad is tied with former Gator Terry Jackson for the longest career of the 23 backs selected in the 1999 draft.

So where does this leave Williams, who has played in 13 NFL games over the past four years? And that's counting the six carries he had against Pittsburgh last season before he tore his pectoral muscle and was lost for the season.

It certainly makes you wonder what he has left doesn't it.

Deuces.

I hate to say it, but I'm with Parcells on the cold war. They should have found a way to trade JT before the draft. Let's face it: Parcells is the face of the franchise now no matter what JT does on the field going forward.

My question is this: How is Ronnie Brown's recovery going? Are you asking Omar whether Ricky can get 1,000 yards because you think he might have to be the feature back this year?

Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams' camp say they will both be ready for the start of training camp.

I think Brown, who is walking without a limp, might suffer a setback because he seems to be rushing it.

Tailbacks usually take 12-18 months to come back from that type of injury, and a full season to get back to their old form.

I was asking that question about Ricky only because I wonder if he could still gain 1,000 yards. I do think he'll have to carry the bulk of the load a tthe start of the season.

Good stuff, Omar. One thing though, you need to pipe down about Joe Flacco. Pro Bowl?

I think the Ravens reached for him. There have been a lot of big QBs who come through the NFL with the big arm but they're missing something. If Flacco was all that, he should have been ranked as a possible #1 pick and no one had him even close. In fact no one had him top 20.

The guy went from being a raw prospect who needs work on his mechanics to everyone forgetting about that. Now everyone is annointing him the Ravens starter and because he showed some promise in rookie minicamp I'm hearing Big Ben comparisons.

So I guess scouting reports mean nothing.

Cam Cameroon didn't produce a winner when he was a college head coach either. He's not a head coach. he's a coordinator.

How quickly we turn...J. Taylor has every right to do whatever he wants in the off-season. He has been the model Dolphin on and off the field. We haven't had many players that have performed so exceptionally on the field, made a sincere contribution to Miami off of it and towed the company line when things were bad. Taylor deserves more respect....

learn the truth

i agree with esteban. indiana became ok after they got rid of cam cameron.

If JT retires NOW, he is no better than Ricky Williams in my book.

Sorry, but its the truth.

I still would deal him, especially if the Lito for JT trade is a possibility.

I can't argue that JT has been a model Dolphin. But, the fact that the guy is basically choosing to dance over showing loyalty to the organization that pays him millions has to put his motives into question. This may very well blow over by the time training camp is here. But, put yourself in Parcells shoes: your star player prefers to dance over bonding with new teammates and learning your playbook. You're inheriting a 1-15 team. How happy are you right now?

I'm on Taylor's side cause he's a player and I'm always on the player's side unless that player sucks then i'm on management's side.

Get rid of JT. I like him and he is a great player but anyone who is not in the working out with their teammates tells me he is worried about doing his own thing and getting not better. Maybe he thinks he is good enough already. What kind of relationship is he building with the players he will be playing with? What kind of example is he setting by not showing up to workouts for the younger players? When it comes time to play and protect the D gap will he do it or do his own thing cause thats what he is doing right now. Trade him and get what you can.

make that "I can't argue that JT hasn't been a model Dolphin."

please remember that Dec 11th JT agreed to go with his agent's recommendation and do DWTS. Parcells wasn't there, and for all Taylor new he was going to return to the same regime in the offseason. JT is a Vet not a rookie. He's football smart and should be able to handle anything the staff can throw at him. let's also not forget that if JT stays, they will be playing in the 3-4 alignment that he thrived in in 2006 that got him the defensive player of the year award.

Here's a difficult question.

Let's say it was Samson Satele who wasn't working out with the team during this voluntary period because he wanted to be with his kids in Hawaii during the offseason, but planned to return when school finished.

Would we (including Bill Parcells) still have the same issue about missing this voluntary period?

Hypothetical question, but I think it parallels because both would be doing what's in the best interest of their families during their offseason.

And Brett,

dude awful statement! hoe is a person that has been faithful and true to a ever embarrasing franchise compare to a guy who left us several time for a puff of ganga? Can you Imean one of those you can get arrested for. Maybe you can put pacman jones in that category, but not JT.

I think its just as wrong to put Ricky in the Pacman category.

Can you honestly tell me that if JT retired on May 14th, it would be any different than when Ricky did? Both would be quitting, when the offseason is pretty much over (i.e. few or no replacements). Its OK to appreciate what JT has done for this organization, but you dont have to worship the ground he walks on and let him have his way with management and the coaching staff - which is exactly what he is doing.

I have said this time and time again. I like JT the football player, but JT the person leaves much to be desired. From publicly criticizing the Ginn selection, to siding with Saban when he ditched the organization, he has put his foot in his mouth on several occasions - particularly since the Wanny days.

I feel that Jason has the right to do what he wants with his down time, but if it becomes a detriment to the team in terms of focus and toward our forward progress, then he has got to go...PERIOD. As a Dolfan, I AM TIRED OF LOSING!! I just want to win!! If that means getting rid of Jason Taylor before the trading deadline, then so be it. It is time to move forward and to look towards the future. I LOVE the direction that we have taken so far under the Parcells regime. With that being said, Jason I love you buddy, but I am 1000% on the side of Bill Parcells in this matter!!

Ask Keyshawn Johnson how much credit he got for developing a young Dwayne Jarrett in Carolina. That says all you need to hear about the benefit of aging players mentoring to the guys who are going to take their job at the first chance they get.

Hang tough JT. Tell Parcells and his ego to kiss your @ss. If they think 6 hours of dancing training each day is easy compared to OTA's, maybe they should try a jove on for size.

Interesting hypothetical about Satele. Here's my take: what's in the best interest of a football players' family is to make the best impression possible to the new regime taking over your team. There's no guarantees and why would you want to draw the ire of the people who control whether you take the field and potentially make millions or sit on the bench? If your family is important, bring them here.

The only way you miss something like this is if football is not your priority. And, if that is the case, Parcells has every right to react the way he has allegedly reacted...

I think the whole JT vs Parcells is blown out of proportion. Every year all the "U" stars go to Miami to practice in the offseason. Their teams don't like it, but I saw Plexico catching passes in the SuperBowl and the Edge running for Arizonia and didn't hear a word about their offseason workouts.
Would Parcells rather deal with Chad Johnson or Henry or would he like to kiss up to Strahan to play another year? Wonder how many games he taped in his career or do you all believe Bellicheat came up with that on his own.
At least Taylor is doing something good with his time (and right now workouts are Voluntary whether Parcells likes it or not)

After the dusk settles JT will be in camp and compete at a high level this season like he always does. He's all heart! His trade value will then increase and Jax, Phila or Wash will bite and we'll get a least a 2nd round pick for him by the trading deadline!

Omar, I love reading your blogs and columns but I have to respectfully disagree with you on the family point. He's being paid millions to play football. Isn't his family doing well? You could argue that JT should show up, work hard and ask for a trade Texas so his wife could be closer to her family. That could be in the best interest of their family as well.

How is "Dancing with the Stars" helping JT's family? I'm not sold that this was his big break. Do you honestly believe "Dancing" was that important? The opportunities are there if they're there..."Dancing" or not.

Omar, how is JT dancing on a TV show doing what's best for his family? I don't get the comparison with Satele caring or spending time with his kids.

PEOPLE (Sorry about the shouting, but..)
Team workouts are voluntary right now. Jason does not have to be there until May 21st. The only reason this is a subject at all is because he is on TV. SO WHAT !
Give it a break.
He's not doing anything wrong nor is he causing any problems with the "Great Bill Parcels" operating procedure.
Besides Parcells will do the same as Johnson did with Marino..Waste his last few years.
Also did anyone hear anything from the Dallas camp about TO on TV or about Romo vacationing in the Caribbean. No because offseason workouts are voluntary right now.

He is setting himself up for his second career, whether that's as a broadcaster or an actor. That's a fact.

Do you think he makes People Magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People list if he doesn't do that show?

The show and the magazine honor exposes him to millions of people world wide who had no clue who Jason Taylor was a year ago this time.

I'm not saying it's going to be this huge platform for him. But it helps him set himself up for the next 10 years after football.

As for the family element, this is their offseason. These workouts are voluntary. I believe JT has a workout bonus in his contract he's not receiving for not participating.

What happens if he comes into camp in better shape than those players attending. I'm not saying that's going to happen, but it could?

I side with Bill Parcells.

Jason Taylor is a Miami Dolphin and a team leader. However, JT is acting like he does not want to be either. Coming off a 1-15 season and set to star in a tailor made 3-4 scheme with an $8 million dollar salary for 2008, Taylor is no where to be seen and has had little contact with the organization outside of a visit to Dolphins' HQ with his dancing partner.

Meanwhile, Bill Parcells is cast as the bad guy because he wants his star defensive player and leader to show up and be both.

It's not Bill Parcells job to say hello to Jason Taylor. It's Jason Taylor's job to say; "Hello Mr. Parcells I am here to play football for the Miami Dolphins."

One thing for sure. The Miami Dolphins under Bill Parcells will be ready to show up and play football with or without Jason Taylor, that is guaranteed.

ESPN recently released their power rankings and had the dolphins rated31 and that seems to have gotten some fans upset. What has Parcells upgraded at the skill positions. Are we really getting excited about wilford and fasano. These two guys couldn't even start on their previous teams. The dolphins probably have the weakest starting cornerbacks in the league. Guys put down the kool-aid and ditch the pom poms, the dolphins are looking at a top five pick in 2009 draft.Parcells will need 3 drafts(2 more), before we even think about challenging the Pats.

"If you don't bring back the mirror ball (trophy) don't come home".

I'm sure Marino was joking but like all jokes, there's an element of truth in them.

I agree with daniel meehan,

I project 2010 as the season the Dolphins need to make the playoff or Bill Parcells is a failure.

If he does it sooner he gets to keep his genius title.

1) Parcells coaching again? The only way I see this happening is if he fails as a VP of Football Operations, which is a job I think he prefers as it allows him to concentrate on the football aspects of the game. If he really had wanted to coach again, I'm sure he could have made it a condition of being hired by the 'Phins.
2) Parcells vs. JT?
Ever wonder why, if the rift between the two is really as wide as it's made out to be by the media/internet, the 'Phins didn't trade him during the draft? If Parcells really was that ticked off about the situation, why not trade him for what he could get for JT and be done with it? As far as the argument that the organization is paying him millions goes, it's not in his contract that he has to be there.
3) RW being a 1000+ yard rusher?
I would say the odds due to age and layoff are against it, but couldn't rule it out.
4) JT retiring?
I don't see him getting anywhere near the money from Hollywood that he's getting from the 'Phins, so I think it's unlikely and once he's crossed that Rubicon, I think it would be almost impossible to come back if it didn't work out or he missed football.
5) 1999 RBs?
Considering that careers for RBs tend to be among the shortest of football positions, it wouldn't/doesn't surprise me if most of them were already retired.
6) Cameron becoming a HC again?
The problem is that the 1-15 season isn't the only strike against him. The multiple player injuries would seem to indicate poor conditioning (for which he holds some responsibility}, and he also bungled several situations with players. If I were a GM/owner interviewing him, the worst possible thing he could do is attempt to "excuse last season by saying, 'Look what I was given to work with'". Rather, I would be more impressed if he manned up to his mistakes and could convince me that he learned from them.

2010 is the year we should see this team contend for the playoffs. If they just fall short, I don't think we write anyone off, but they have to be a highly competitive team.

We have to remember that Parcells is not the head coach or the GM so it's not all on his reputation. He's never been VP of Football Operations and he's never been a great GM.

However he is a great football coach and that's what his legacy is, as a coach, not in the personnel department. Parcells has never won a championship with teams he's built.

omar, omar, omar. what kind of nonsense are you stirring up?

we, the fans, do not have to take sides. quite obviously, this is just business. in other words, it's about money. the dolphins want to save it. jason doesn't want to forfeit it. how can anyone fault either side?

this whole problem is created by the cap. contracts are purposely back-loaded because of the cap. why should the player take the hit? so people might like him? call him a team player?

this whole think is ridiculous. if jason plays, i'll cheer for him. if he moves on, i'll wish him the best. the whole time, i'm a dolphin fan.

Omar:

You are correct about JT - this gig has everything to do with his next career. If indeed this was worked out in December with his agent, this was going to have nothing to do with whomever was in Miami this offseason, be it Mueller/Cameron or Parcells/Ireland/Sporano. JT made the decision it was time to work on his next career, period.

And you brought up a great point that I've wondered about too - how hungry can a player be when he's now completely focused on his next career? Other players in the past - Marino, Esiason, etc - took 'summer jobs' calling World League games and so forth - but that next career tryout wasn't consuming their offseason. They could do both, work with the team, and do their own thing on the weekends.

Could you imagine Marino late in his career deciding to pull his family from South Florida to go to New York to work on his broadcasting career between the Shula/Johnson regime change? I don't think so.

Unfortunately, until JT can prove his commitment to Parcells, I think he's dancing on thin ice in Miami.

Mr. Bungle

i will agree with you that Parcells has never been a great GM or a VP before, but to say that he hasn't won with the teams he's built is just off and simply untrue. look at the 13-3 Cowboys last year. that is truly the house that Parcells built. His history speaks for itself and the history is winner - more hits than misses. Parcells has been brought out of retirement twice to do what he is doing in Miami... it's just that now he's doing it all in the front office. it works out better... instead of him coaching and rebuilding a team... he can just focus on the latter.

I'm kinda stuck in the middle.I want JT to win the competition, not so he can work on the other career but because i know it's something he wants to do - win! But I want JT to come home adn start working on our playoff run. you never kno maybe he can be like Strahan & getta ring in a year or 2. I don't know maybe it's me being nieve or or zealous or extremely hopeful. but i want and i just feel like the Dolphins are going to be a sleeper this season and come from no where..... hey baby - RESPECT THE CODE.

"the Dolphins new warden is a firm believer that when an athlete starts setting himself up for life after football Parcells concludes "he's done."

This is insane. If Parcells really believes this, he's nuts. The NFL itself tells players to start preparing for life after football at the start of their careers. A career can end with one hit, they HAVE to start preparing for life after football. I swear, the more "Parcells-isms" I hear, the more I think this is guy is Jimmy Johnson all over again, and that is NOT a compliment.

"James Johnson, the next tailback taken after Williams (coincidentally by the Dolphins in the second round...dope...)"

--------------------------------

Hey Omar, I'm not sure if you are calling the guy who drafted James Johnson a dope or if you are doing a Homer Simpson. If the latter, a little FYI ... Homer says "D'Oh!"

JV Phin, where did I say teams that Parcells built never won? I said never won a championship. What did the Cowboys win last year besides the NFC East?

His Pats team lost in the Super Bowl and he didn't have complete control there, and his Jets team lost in the AFC Championship game.

His Super Bowl Giants teams were built by George Young.

That's all I'm saying.

There really isnt a need to pick sides. I personally dont agree w/ Jason's dancing gig, but like Sparano said its better than things other athletes are doing (at least hes dancing himself and not engaging in shoot outs outside of other "dancing" establishments). With that said, even thouhg I feel that way, it would be a disservice to this team if Parcells agreed with me. I want Parcells to be an old school, dirt in your eye, football is everything type of SOB. Its in his nature and its what makes him sucessful. So while I, personally, am not upset with JT, I am thankful than Tuna is. As long as Sparano is still speaking to him it shouldnt be a problem.

I'm on Jason Taylor's side. To quote Allen I verson" WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PRACTICE, NOT A GAME...NOT A GAME...BUT PRACTICE. We all agree it would be a great gesture if he showed up to be a leader on the team, but it's voluntary, not mandatoy. He's given plenty of blood sweat and tears for many years.Management repaid him by not giving him a quality QB and trading away picks and talented players, thus robbing him of the opportunity to win a championship in the twilight of his career. Their relationship right now is like a marriage in which they're staying together for the kids. I respect Parcells, but what's with this blind allegiance? Are we that desperate for a messiah to save our team, that his childish, arrogant behavior, behavior that we would admonish a player for exhibiting gets him a free pass? He's playing petty mind games. That's not cool. He's a egotistical control freak. he knew no one would give up a 1st rounder for JT. I think that deal was set up to be shot down. The best option now is to have Taylor play, and have the option to trade him before the trade deadline when some team gets desperate for a pass rusher.

I am tired of the JT/Parcells drama.
Bill wants him in camp JT wants to dance with Edyta, who can blame him think about it guys.
Our new OT is making over 8 mil a year and hasn't played a game yet.
So who cares if JT wants a temporary second job as long as he shows up for his contract part of the deal. He deserves it.

As far as Bill coaching again He said he's done Ya Right. We heard that before.
He wants to compete with the Jets and Pats and wave his magic wand or baton and watch what he builds beat their Assup

Like Tony Sparano said, this whole Parcells/JT thing has been blown out of proportion. It's a media thing. There really is nothing else to report.

Ricky definitely CAN rush for 1k next season, even in a platooning role. First, 1000 yards isn't the benchmark that it was when it was the measure of excellence in the time of the 12-game season. Second, he's got natural, God-given abilities that put him among the top 10 RB's ever. Note I said ability, not production - he has million-dollar talent and a ten-cent brain.

The Satele scenario is flawed, Omar. In that hypothesis Satele would be furthering his education - Taylor is just being a little bitch.

And right on, Esteban - Cameron is a good Coordinator, never will be a HC. There are lots of guys like that, two close to home would be Arnsparger and Norv Turner.

*edit* sorry, meant to type "14-game season"

Man is it that boring with all the losing franchises in South Florida that you guys have to try and fabricate a story?? Here's a quote by Harvey

"Do you like Tuna's style? Do you think Jason Taylor likes it?

Harvey "

And Now Omar back at it, what's the beef with J.T. that you guys are suddenly making him out to be a selfish player?? You guys are supposed to be reporters yet you spend all your energy specualting and trying to create stories. You remind me of the Yo-Yo's that take every move by New York Knicks as a move to finally get LeBron James! It's no story people J.T. is going to play and he's going to give 110% every day like always. Leave the man alone.

I'm on BP's side in this affair:
JT doesn't care about the Fins as a team or organization. He cares about himself and only himself............... I don't blame him, he's almost done with football and if he needs to prepare now for his future if he wants a really bright one.
But how can a Dolfan support JT concerning football when his heart left the team long ago?!?
Now if Dolfan's want to support him because of what he's done in the past, or because they want to see him in movies, that's fine, but to sit here and say that you take his side because what he's doing is what's best for the team is nuts.

Omar did you see that milk commercial with JT. It was awful. I think he is going to have a hard time as a actor because his real emotions are very easy to read. I go to the movies once a week with a bunch of friends. They think Matthew MCConaughey is hot but after Fools Gold it will take a lot to get them to pay $10 bucks to go back.

I did see that milk commercial and it was awful.

chris H, it was the Homer Simpson sound. But that draft was a pretty bad one for Jimmy.

I'm going to approach this season as if we don't have Rick on the team...in the sense that anything he gives us is a bonus. He hates football and is disinterested. How motivated will he really be. He's not even making that much money anymore. As fas as Jason Taylor as an actor, he's 6'6". He can't be a leading man. Who's gonna be opposite him. He will be good for nothing more than silly cameo roles like Brett Favre in There's Something About Mary.

Where did everyone get the idea that JT want's to be an actor anyway? Did he express that. I've still yet to find the genesis of that idea. He's good looking with pretty eyes...(no homo)but that's about it. I'm just not buying it

Dat Dude Ryan

Click over to ESPN magazines online site and checkout JT's blog for the answer to your last question.

As for Taylor the actor... he better get a very good acting coach that can make his acting at least half decent. I'm a JT supporter but don't think he should jump into this acting thing so quickly.

Tommya

You don't become NFL defensive player of the year (on a bad team at that) and lead your team in sacks the following year if your hearts not in it. As far as I'm concerned it's about priorities. When your not on the clock it's me time. Thoughts should turn to you and your family but when your at work that's where your focus should be. Not that he doesn't have the passion it takes to play the game. I guess that's how Taylor see's things. Just my opinion.

Este...I typically agree with your posts, but this time I think you're out of context with your bashing of Cam Cameron. I'm gonna add good ole' Eric to this argument since he posted the same BS previously, and then followed up with agreeing here in this thread with you.

If you're judging Cam based on what he did at Indiana, then you know absolutely nothing about IU, and about IU's football program. As I've stated before...I'm a born and raised Hoosier. If you aren't...then you don't understand.

Bill Mallory...our all time winningest coach...had a losing record. He had six winning seasons in 13 at IU.

Cam was at IU for 5 years, and had Antwaan Randle El. Ever heard of him? Under Cam he won freshman of the year in the Big Ten and first team ALL-American his senior year under Cam.

We hadn't been to a bowl game for 4 years prior to Cam, and hadn't been to one after Cam left until THIS year...and we were beat by Oklahoma State.

To say we were "better" after Cam left is foolish. Gerry DiNardo suceeded Cam, and never won more than three games in a season, and was fired after two years there. Terry Hoeppner (Big Ben's old coach) followed DiNardo...RIP...and didn't have a winning season at IU either...going 4-7, and 5-7 in his two years there.

Bill Lynch is our coach now...he's had ONE season at IU, and finally we had a winning season and went to a bowl game again. Our first since 1993...three years before Cam even came to IU.

So for Eric to say "indiana became ok after they got rid of cam cameron" is complete BS. We didn't become "ok" after we got rid of Cam. DiNardo sucked...Hoeppner sucked...and Lynch has had one good year.

That's 3 coaches since Cam.

Remember Wally? Guess who coached him at IU? Wally was one of the top 3 or 4 DE prospects coming out of college before he got hurt his senior year at IU. Some had him rated above Courtney Brown.

Cam had two seasons where we finished 4-7, and one where we finished 5-6. That's better than DiNardo ever finished, and as good as Hoeppner. The two guys who followed him.

Kenn,
When did I say JT's heart wasn't in it?!?
JT is a VERY competitive guy, so yes his heart is in the game.
I said his heart isn't with the team!!!!
There's a difference.

I gotta agree with Brett on this one. I've been torn for some time, and pondered both sides of the JT argument. For those of you supporting JT ask yourself this...what if you were Wayne H?

You pay JT millions to play...and what if he gets hurt like that other dude Christiana on DWTS? It's like the Big Ben riding without a helmut thing. At some point you have to be a good judge of what's best for who's taking care of YOU. The Phins, and Wayne H. have taken GOOD care of JT. IMO...he should have waited until after he retired to do the DWTS gig. Rice did. Emmitt did. Dude should have waited. We're not talking about a GQ photo shoot here...the guy could get hurt and that directly affects his team, and the guy paying him millions to be his team leader.

Look...I like JT and love watching him play, but he should have been smarter. I don't care if the Tuna wasn't here yet...he KNEW we were in for a coaching change, and KNEW he was the team leader long with Zach at that point. No matter WHO came in...what happened with Zach and JT was KEY to the way our fans AND team were viewed AND game planned for later.

Plain and simple...while he remains a current player for the Phins...and continues to cash his HUGE checks...he needs to put the second right behind family. Or third if you're religious. lol

Dude should have retired early if this was what he wanted to do.

However...he's in it now...I wanna see him win it all! Although Kristi is gonna kick his a$$ in the finals. lol

OH, and to those who say we/the Phins have wasted his best year...come ON...with that line of logic 95% of the players are "wasted" in this league since only a mere FEW get a ring. That statement is just completely unfair.

If I were playing in the NFL and making millions...I wouldn't do ANYTHING to jeapordize that priveledge.

Infact...the only "dangerous" thing I'd do in the off season is hunt "wabbits"...

If you follow...LOL

Here's one for you Omar...

"I'd dine and Dash" a LOT. LOL!

For the fisherman..."Tag and release"...

i was under the impression that terry hoeppner had a few winning seasons at indiana. sorry if i was wrong.

after i did some research i would say to you JinVa that hoeppner wasn't that bad. they started 4-1 his first year then the hoosiers fell apart. the next season they almost made a bowl game.

I AM SHOUTING. YES. THERE IS SO MUCH IGNORANCE HERE IT IS MIND-BOGGLING.

FIRST OFF, SHAWN, GIVE THE 9/11 BS A BREAK. SEISMOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE INDICATES NO CONTROLLED IMPLOSIONS - THIS HAS BEEN POINTED OUT TO YOU BEFORE, YET YOU PERSIST IN YOUR PERNICIOUS STUPIDITY. STOP. THIS IS A FOOTBALL BLOG.

PLEASE GET THIS IN YOUR HEADS - JASON SIGNED UP TO DO DWTS BEFORE (DECEMBER) PARCELLS WAS EVEN HIRED (JANUARY). HE IS NOT A QUITTER AND THAT IS WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED TO SATISFY THIS MEDIA-DRIVEN PARCELLS/TAYLOR RIFT.

SOMEONE THINKS TAYLOR IS MISSING PRACTICE. THERE IS NO PRACTICE. THEY ARE IN A CONDITIONING PROGRAM - LIFTING AND RUNNING STRETCHING. ONLY THE ROOKIES HAVE 'PRACTICED'.

Most of all the rest Omar brings up requires pure conjecture. I have no problem with that. I believe both Ricky and Ronnie can still perform at a high level, BUT I WOULDN'T BET THE HOUSE ON IT, and neither will Parcells and company.

I do not think Cameron and Mueller got a fair chance to show what they could do, but Wayne was in an almost untenable position and made a very difficult decision.

There were plenty of rookie NFL head coaches who had miserable first years AND WENT ON TO BECOME GREAT, INCLUDING PARCELLS. That said, I'd rather have Parcells and his crew here than Cameron and Mueller right now.

By the way, Jason just advanced to next week, so we get to suffer through more media-driven piffle.

Does anyone think JT will really be a leading man. There are better athlete/actors who haven't really done blockbuster films. The only success story I can think of is The Rock, but he was a wrestler. That stuff's fake, so half of it is acting anyway. There's also Rick Fox, but he's been doing his thing for like ten years and is hardly a household name. Ray Allen was terrible in He Got Game. MJ was ok in Space Jam, but he played himself. Jim Brown did action movies which doesn't require great talent. I'm just not buying it. Someone please give me some examples of athletes who have made an impressive transition.

I would be pleasantly surprised if Ricky and Ronnie perform at a high level. Even though they have the talent, they're both question marks.I think Ricky still wants to do his puff puff pass thing, and as for Ronnie, running backs and acl tears make me nervous. No doubt, an emphasis will be placed on our running game with our revamped o-line, and QB situatuation, but I wish we had a running back I could feel completely confident in. I guess it could work though, if they split the load evenly.

oh lord, I just watched my first moments of DWTS on the clip from this blog--barf. people actually watch that crap?

JinVA,

Please do not acknowledge Eric/Dredd. His antics continue on every forum. We are trying to see if the ignore him and he will go away approach.

If he wants to discuss things besides Beck/Cam sucking for life, then maybe we can engage. Other than that he is just trying to start crap.

i'm still here ron. i'm watching you...

If true, then by his own standards, having retired multiple times, Parcells arguably has been 'done' for many years.

Having won 1 playoff game in 15 years, 'you are what your record says you are'.

Getting tired already of any BP camp spin junk that disses JT. Enough already.

I have generally liked BP, but why is he getting the free pass to pass this crap?

The SPCA demands you leave that horse alone. It is clearly dead and you continue to beat it. You will be brought up on charges.

DG: A free pass for Parcells? It could be because of his 183-138-1 coaching record, three conference titles, and two NFL titles. What, should the press be treating him like he was a first-year coach?

JinVA - outstanding points about JTs role on this team, as well as how he's been taken care of by the Fins.

I completely agree with you guys about JT. This all started about a week before Zach got cut when the rumors about it were flying. The logic was basically that if Zach left JT would also go. It's truthfully kind of annoying and it seems like the result of a slow news period.

Parcells is a legendary coach, future HOF for certain, but despite that, he is an egotistical control freak. That's why he couldn't get along with T.O because they're both egomaniacs. Parcells is too obsessed with showing that he's the boss and he's in control. JT is a 12 year vet and is doing another activity on his free time, big deal. This camp isn't even mandatory. I don't like when people demand of others what they don't demand of themselves. Calling T.O "the player", refering to Terry Glen as "she". This is all stuff he gets away with. I like parcells, but I just chose to be objective. The media has built an image of him that belies who he really is. Jerry Jones had final personel say in Dallas. If Parcells had final say, T.O would have never been brought in, and the team wouldn't be nearly as good. He didn't even want to play Romo.He was loyal to washed up Bledsoe. He only started Romo when Bledsoe stunk up the field so much that he had no choice. I don't want to sound like I'm ripping on Parcells, but let's be objective. We can acknowledge his greatness while at the same time acknowledging his flaws.

And once again...it's a GAME!
Jason Taylor is an adult with responsibilities; preparing for a future that meets those responsibilities is not only his right...it's smart. Please don't begrudge him for his intelligence.
Do you mean to tell me Omar that if we all stopped reading your blogs and stories, you wouldn't feel the need for a career change even if you still felt somewhat relevant? Don't be so niave.

Williams can play. Jason can be traded to Green bay. Then the dolpins are Ricky and now Bill's. One thing we don't want is ego's flying around. That will stop us right in our tracks. Ricky is a humble person. Jason can be a star anywhere. let him out into the ocean. He'll catch a big fish for us.

Omar,

Ever wonder why people would question your objectivity on an issue when you blog enter a question about parcells vs. JT than spend the whole blog defending JT?

"Hypothetical question, but I think it parallels because both would be doing what's in the best interest of their families during their offseason."

I'm leaving on a business trip tommorow in spite of the fact that my 3 almost 4 year old daughter simply reveres me right now (that's not gonna last long)...why am I going? Because taking care of business IS whats in the best interest of my family.

If you argue that's what JT is doing than I argue he is not in the football business. Know who IS in the football business? Samson Satele.

That analogy was as ridiculous as your casual declaration that an unproven D-2 (or whatever: NON D-1) small school rookie QB is on the verge of a pro-bowl berth.

I think you're the toast of the town when it comes to dolphins beatwriters, so please don't hold my opinions against me, but your stance on these two issues is looking somewhat NON-objective (I know...the word is SUBjective).

I hope, as a journalist, you value objectivity more than any allegiance you may feel toward a particular football personality.

Anthony,

Omar is playing devil's advocate with these questions. He personally has made it quite clear he condones JTs actions.

To the guy above who typed 2 paragraphs in all caps...you lose readership with that crap. Whatever you said is lost in what appears to be a very long rant (though I really dont' know cuz I didn't read it!).

One other thing Anthony....the NFL is not a game...it's a business about a game...a business that JT makes 8 million bucks (this year) to take part in.

If you like or approve of what he's doing, or think it's just smart so be it. But the question at hand is: Is JT doing what's right for the dolphins?

The answer is a resounding "NO!".

He's entitled to seek a life outside of football when his life INSIDE of football is finished.

If it's finished now, so be it: thanks for the years JT, good luck in hollywood for a heartbeat, I bet you make a million bucks (while leaving 15 million on the table)!!!

No question in mind -- JT should be with his team working out, preparing for the new season. As a purported team leader, he must be there from management's perspective. These workouts are "voluntary" under NFL rules, but they are mandatory in every other way (JT and his Agent know this well). Last year JT became a disruptive force, and it continues today. JT's participation in DWTS is an insult to Parcels, the Coaches, and each of his Dolphin teammates. He mocks their hard work, while wearing tights with sequins and doing the cha-cha. I suggest he be traded to a non-contender, or to the Silly Nannies of the Euro League. If there are no takers, keep him for the practice team only. Be thankful when his ego makes him retire prematurely.

BTW Omar,

Given what Parcells has accomplished, short of institutionalizing cheating, there's very little he can do while with the fins that would make him a "failure".

A 12 year veteran misses Voluntary workouts to have fun and the disappointed President of Football Operations acts snarky with him which causes 12 year veteran to get upset but not rant to the media and then media sensationalizes moment and Fin fans jump in with both feet to in many cases either defend said vet or tee off on him like he missed some Mandatory workout or Training Camp. Mission Accomplished Media. Thanks media for combining with the fans to make something small, large enough to help fill some of our jonesing non-football days until the actual camps and playing begins. You have united us...blah blah blah...waitaminute...we're not united in this? Aw heck! Never mind.

jahndoh, I am speaking from a fan perspective. Business or not, I consider it just a game - entertainment I enjoy. Period. And while JT may be making his money, so are owners and the media, who I doubt have JT or my best interests at heart.

Grow up.

Oh, by the way...my issue is not with Omar playing devil's advocate here. It is about fanning these smoldering coals until fire results. I enjoy Omar's blogs or I wouldn't be here typing this. However, I gave up caring about what happens between JT and BP; As a fan, I vote the Dolphins keep JT because he's fun to watch. Similarly, I vote that Omar find another topic to write about until something in this scenerio actually happens worth writing about. Thanks...and sorry for the "grow up" business.

New blog is up

Omar thanks for all the great info as usual. You work really hard and you give us a lot of good information.

And yes, Ricky is going to be productive, he'll be better than Ronnie. Merling will be a disapointment at first because of his injury. Henne will do well if he ever gets on the field, and I'm tired of hearing about Flacco and his red cape.

Volunteer means that you do not need to do it. Jason is not participating in workouts, so what! He has the play book from what the HC has said and is reviewing it. Right now Jason is being the face of the franchise. He is on TV selling the Dolphins organization to 20 million viewers. He will be back for the Mandatory workouts when the show is over on next Tuesday.

Ronnie may come back to soon. I hope that he does not get injured. The organization needs to keep him out of the first 4-6 weeks of the season to give him at least a year of recovery time. Run Ricky Run.

We do not have Flacco so let that one go!!!

To the guy who didn't read my ALL CAPS paragraphs. I get fed up with people who comment here without reading the entire post from Omar or any of the comments, consequently repeating things already said, misunderstanding the
tone of the conversation and being general morons.

Someties I feel like screaming at them, and that is what I did.

I am annoyed by all caps comments as well, but could not contain myself. My apologies to anyone offended. Now, go back and read what I've said (just this once) and tell me where I'm wrong.

You will find comments after my 'rant' that continue to misunderstand the ground floor of the JT/Parcells flap. There will always be morons - I'm old enough to know better than let them get to me, but sometimes...

And jahndoh, I make one comment, compared to your infinitude of remarks and it becomes a rant. Right.

"Volunteer means that you do not need to do it"

Clearly many agree with this statement.

Those many clearly don't understand what a misnomer is.

Let me translate what "voluntary workout" means.

It means the CBA limits the number of mandatory workouts so NFL coaches are required to rename all workouts beyond that limit as "voluntary".

Yes that means it's OK with the CBA if the players don't attend those workouts. It most certainly DOES NOT mean that it's OK with coaches to determine those workouts.

Those of you who defend JT for not attending these "voluntary" workouts, should also defend Parcells (and furthermore NOT BE SURPRISED by) disapproval of his abscence.

To anthony, it IS possible to disagree on something without chalking up your counterparts opinion's disparity to lack of maturity. I'm all grown up already kiddo!

Predictatator....

I mere told you that people skip posts that have all caps...y'all are sensitive this morning eh?

"You will find comments after my 'rant' that continue to misunderstand the ground floor of the JT/Parcells flap. There will always be morons - I'm old enough to know better than let them get to me, but sometimes..."

If you think your all-caps "rant" singlehandedly usurps the rights of all others to express there own opinions (whether contrary to your own or not) after said "rant"...you're really in the wrong place. Blogs are for all to share their opinions regardless of what you tell them to think.

I mere try to be sensitive to veracity and sensible as well.

Your exact words were, "Whatever you said is lost in what appears to be a very long rant (though I really dont' know cuz I didn't read it!)."

Sometimes it pays to listen to the raised voice. It might convey something of note one would otherwise miss.

One of the things in what appears to be a rant is that JT signed on to do DWTS before Parcells was even hired. This completely negates any idea that Taylor is in some way 'dissing' Parcells - and yet that is the spin so-called journalists and some others (you know who you are) continue to lend the tale.

{If you think your all-caps "rant" singlehandedly usurps the rights of all others to express there own opinions (whether contrary to your own or not) after said "rant"...you're really in the wrong place. Blogs are for all to share their opinions regardless of what you tell them to think.}

What???

Facts are facts and opinions are opinions. If opinions are based upon non-factual information, they have a tendency to be wrong. Pointing out errors, whether in caps or not, on a blog, in no way 'usurps' anyone's 'rights' to be mistaken. In fact, they continue to be mistaken despite all facts to the contrary. Take our delusional friend Shawn, for example - he continues to believe that the 9/11 attacks were perpetrated by our own government and appends that opinion to the end of each of his comments. That is why I hit the all caps key. Some need volume to get their attention.

Responding to Woodstrock (above): point was, if Parcells is giving spin about what signifies being 'done', the press, in being objective, might want to point out that Parcells himself has 'checked out' several times. Are we then to not wonder if he's come back mailing it in, since, by the logic in Parcells spin, once you are looking beyond footall in the 1st place, your 'done'? Quoting Dat dude Ryan above: "I don't like when people demand of others what they don't demand of themselves."

Oh, and the great record - eespecially looking at last 15 years - yes give him credit, he has created moderate sucess still - but, much as I hate hoodie man, BP hasn't since reached the level you cite without him.
