Check out the best Wordpress 2.3 theme : WideJournal

October 4th, 2007 by Hans

After the many requests of correcting the banner which was shifting to the right of the screen when the theme was displayed on monitors with high resolution(1280×1024,etc), I decided to update myJournal Hypereal. I also waited for Wordpress 2.3 to get released so that I can correct any bugs or errors showing up with myJournal Hypereal. All this to tell that you can now grab the new version : WideJournal.

or check out the live preview on Wordpress 2.3

widejournal screenshot

Some of the noticing features of WideJournal:

  1. The rotating banner is displayed at the center of the screen
  2. The search form is found at the top left together with some navigational and translation icons to get you anywhere quicker and allow your visitors to read you in their favourite languages.
  3. + all the existing features of myJournal Hypereal

I hope you’ll enjoy using WideJournal as I enjoyed developing it. Do leave any requests or queries about the theme at the forum.

Please do tell how do you find it and whether everything is working perfectly.

Thanks so much for the quick and useful response on my previous request:) I just have two more questions:
    1. Where do I go to change the size and color of the title of the blog?
    2. Where do I go to Change the colors of links inside posts as well as titles of posts? I have a feeling this is in style.css but I coudn’t figure out where.
Thanks so much again for your help!
    Take care,
    Justin

  • 13 Hans Oct 30, 2007 at 12:36 am

    @ Justin (pusha)

all this is done within the style.css. things inside the stylesheet should be a bit intuitive like css tags corresponding to title/header should be assigned corresponding names as such. for the post titles, modify things around the p.post-meta-title tags. for the colour of links inside posts, modify this : .entry-meta a and that :
a.entry-meta a:hover. size and colour should be modified there itself.

Thanks a lot Hans! Thanks to you I figured out how to change the header text color, the post title color and the bottom nav links color. The only thing I couldn’t seem to figure out was how to change the colors of links withing posts. I chnged the color of visited links but none of the lines worked to change the color of an unvisited link within a post. Any ideas? I appreciate your help!
    Thanks,
    Justin
P.S your theme is now running on my site.

  • 15 Hans Oct 30, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    @ Jushua :

try changing things around the .entry-content a, .entry-content a:visited and .entry-content a:hover to change the colour inside posts.

  • 16 Justin (pusha) Oct 31, 2007 at 12:07 am

Thanks Hans:) It turned out I was doing it right but I was saving the change to my back up folder and not my “publish” folder. Woops! Thanks so much for all you help. I plan on writing a post about you and your theme very soon.
    take care,
    Justin.
P.S> Feel free to take a look at my blog- Push A Pixel.

    @ Justin

that’s great to know things turn out well for you and your blog. The look is really great with the new colour scheme you adopted - according to your own taste - : making it really unique. Great header image too :) good luck with your blogging….

I’ve just taken a look at this theme. I don’t know what percentage of webusers (the kind who’ll visit blogs) use a 1280 wide screen these days but I’m guessing it’s a fairly high percentage - and growing.
I like the fact the header graphics can rotate. It can sometimes feel very tired to see the same old image, can’t it?
Nice theme and thanks. I’ll let you know where I use it once it’s up and running.

  • 19 AJ Nov 3, 2007 at 8:37 pm

I like the theme and would like to use it. But it seems it is not compatible with WP ver < 2.3
I get this error when I install it on my blog (WP 2.2.2)
Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_the_tags() in
    /wp-content/themes/widejournal/functions.php on line 139

Guess I’ll have to look for something else!

  • 21 Hans Nov 6, 2007 at 3:01 pm

    @ AJ :

do use the MyJournal Hypereal version if you’re on WP < 2.3

  • 22 AJ Nov 7, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Han, I looked at that and came to this page browsing around your site. The reason why I wanted Widejournal was it’s fluid layout which is very important to me.
    And the color white :)

(Yes, I know the current theme on my site is not. That is one of the reasons why I want to switch)

  • 23 Teckrieg Nov 19, 2007 at 3:07 pm

There seems to be some issue with the secondary sidebar. It wouldn’t display correctly in firefox.

  • 24 Hans Nov 20, 2007 at 10:20 pm

    @ Teckrieg

I’ve tested it on Firefox and there should be no whatever problems with the sidebars unless you’ve made an error while modifying something else like deleting a div somewhere….

try installing a fresh copy and try again… could you please send in your blog url so that I can check this out?

  • 25 Teckrieg Nov 21, 2007 at 2:32 pm

    @ Hans

I don’t think I’ve made any changes to the side bar yet and I’ve tried to do a fresh install.

    My site is at zoibox.com

    Thanks a million :)

  • 26 Hans Nov 21, 2007 at 10:32 pm

    @ Teckrieg

I’ve checked your site and on my browser everything appears just fine. Perhaps you’re on low resolution or something like that, then use myJournal Hypereal instead because that version(widejournal) is for high resolution only.

  • 27 Teckrieg Nov 22, 2007 at 1:48 am

    @Hans

Yeah, I pretty much guess that might be one of the issue. Sadly, I don’t think myJournal will work for me as I’m running WP 2.3 at the moment.

Last time I checked there was some SQL error and I think it might be related to the different term.

Anyway, thanks for looking it through :)

  • 28 Justin (pusha) Dec 4, 2007 at 4:49 am

    Han,
You might remember me from a month or so ago. The theme is working great and the blog is doing well. The only weird thing is that a white square covers the upper left corner of my blog when I translate it to another language using the translate buttons. I didn’t tweak with any of the settings with those buttons. Do you have any idea what it could be? Feel free to check it out on my blog (I linked to it on my name).
    Good night,
    Justin

This theme didn’t come out right using IE7. It works fine in Firefox 2.x.

    I am using WP 2.3.1.

    Anyone else have this problem?

  • 30 Sperwer Dec 24, 2007 at 2:50 am

I’ve just switched hosts and moved over to Wordpress and will looking around for themes discovered your hypereal, which I’m trying out. I’ve got a problem though. I can’t get the left 3cleft layout - which is what I would prefer to use - to work at any resolution on Firefox. Any ideas. I suppose I could try Wide, but I like the way the navigation/translation gizmo floats at the margin in hypereal. Have you considered making that an option in Wide. I using XP and WP2.3.

The WideJournal sounds like a nice and better one.

  • 37 kman Mar 2, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I’ve checked this out on a few different computers and on Internet Explorer the sidebars seem to overlap, making the theme look all in all incorrect. Is there anyway that I can fix this? I’d love to use this theme but if it cuts out all IE users… well you get the picture.

Can the rotating banner be replaced by an adsense ad banner or any other banner ad? is this compatible with WP 2.5?thank you

  • 42 man boobs Apr 6, 2008 at 8:03 am

Why does everyone like 3-column themes? I think they are way too busy, too much stuff crammed in. It’s a web page not a newspaper and should flow.

  • 43 Art Apr 8, 2008 at 12:11 pm

    @#42: Because of ad-comparability of 3-column themes.

  • 44 Simlpy Apr 12, 2008 at 10:48 am

Just want to say that I truly, truly love this theme.

I’ve been using it with WP 2.5 with no problems until today:

Any idea why CoComment would return a ‘Not all mandatory parameters specifiied’ submitting error when a reader tries to leave a comment?

Any edits to the files come to mind to remedy it?

He tried on both IE 7 and FF 3.0. Comments didn’t go through.

Thanks for everything either way :)

  • 47 vitamins May 11, 2008 at 5:52 pm

    thanks for the theme

  • 48 Dave Brightbill Jul 18, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I love this theme but would really like to find a way to have some of my pages not have the sidebar on them. For example, I have a calendar page but on small monitors, the sidebar covers up part of the calendar. Thanks for the excellent work.
