Less Is Definitely More

Less Is Definitely MoreWe Americans have developed quite a reputation in the world. We are famous for “the bigger and the better”. I would never have known this had I not spent time with some non-Americans in polite conversation.

A running joke in places like Germany, England, Ireland, etc. is the American travel itinerary. Only an American would plan a tour of Europe and try and squeeze it into one week. It would appear that our natural ambition and sense of industry causes us to be somewhat impatient and anxious to have every minute of the schedule double booked. I wonder if we had been around during the week of creation if we would have asked God to hurry it up right around Wednesday so that we could get a head start on the weekend. Hmmmm.

So what am I driving at? Well, school will be starting up soon for many American families. I see this as a grand opportunity to realign your priorities by realigning your schedules. Think about planning time not to go but to be. Plan some time for your family just to be together and act like a family. Plan some time for the family to read God’s word together. Plan some time to open up your home and practice Acts 2 with other students, single parents, singles, and elderly people in your church and community. When your schedule is less booked, you’ll be surprised at how much more you can get done…for the Kingdom that is.

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship…”
- Acts 2:42a

One Response to “Less Is Definitely More”

  1. Great advice, Mike. It is so easy to get caught up in the pace and “obligation” of living life at a constant 150mph. We’re so intent on being well-rounded individuals that we forget God made us relational. I’m going to go start crossing things off my calendar right now!
