RIM CEO: Actually, We Didn't Rip Off The iPhone
When we saw the first photos of Research in Motion's new "Bold," we assumed co-CEO Jim Balsillie had just plunked Apple's iPhone down in front of his engineers and said "Give me something like this." Not so, says RIM's other co-CEO Mike Lazaridis. In this interview with Natasha Lomas, Mike says RIM's been working on the Bold since time immemorial:
This is three years in the making. So I'm sorry but this wasn't a response to another device. Either that or we have a time machine somewhere, or some kind of magic crystal ball or something. This was actually designed three years ago and the actual physical design of this product--I have the original models from 2006.
Mike also argues that QWERTY keyboards are only going to get more popular, now that mobile email, Facebook, etc., are going mainstream:
The most exciting mobile trend is...full Qwerty keyboards. I'm sorry, it really is. I'm not making this up. People are running out of their two-year contracts and they're coming into the stores and they want to be able to do Facebook and they want to be able to do instant messaging and they want to be able to do e-mail and they ask for those features thinking that they're going to get another flip phone and they're walking out with a (BlackBerry) Curve or a Pearl because they're the best devices for doing those kinds of activities. And so what is the defining factor? The keyboard.
Which doesn't explain why RIM is about to release its next iPhone-killer, the keyboard-less Thunder, (Dan Frommer has photoshopped a hypothetical version below).

Jim is right, the coolest thing in mobile is the full QWERTY keyboard. The RIMM guys really know what they are doing, and have been doing it a lot longer than Apple; and a lot better than PALM. I think Silicon Alley should pay him the due respect and perhaps, listen to what he's saying! (with all due respect to AI, too).
What iPhone has going that rocks is the OPERATING SYSTEM. But it still needs a keyboard. A real one.

What Apple did with the iPhone is bring a desktop-class operating system, and a sensational
web browsing capability to the mobile device - throwing in iPod capability (and a few other nifty apps) to boot.
Both firms deserve credit for being the real deal:
major best-in-class mobile computing innovators! Sure, there's bound to be some overlap as major innovations, like iPhone's stupenously great OS/UI. But both firms are both legit innovators. Off the charts!
I think they've created a huge error by pushing out details of TWO unreleased phone models. Sales on current models are going to be impacted and even sales of the new Bold may be impacted as people wait to see what Thunder is all about.
Unless Thunder is signifcantly cheaper than the iPhone, I don't see it selling in huge numbers since consumers who want a touch screen will most likely go to the iPhone, and RIMM advocates will want the models with keyboards.

Touchscreen is better, at least on the iphone it is. - It's not your typical touchscreen.
Steve, the iPhone *has* a full QWERTY keyboard.
If you look at the iPhone keyboard, you will notice the arrangement of the keys across the top. It spells "QWERTY." That's what "QWERTY" refers to -- the arrangement of the keys. "The RIMM guys" are redefining words to support Blackberry's marketing hype.

If you want a real keyboard, buy a real keyboard -- and a computer to go with it.
You can't put a real keyboard in your pocket. It's physically impossible. The Blackberry keyboard is not a real keyboard any more than the Timex Sinclair keyboard. Real typists don't use their thumbs, they use their fingers. Thumbs are only for spacebars.
By the way, not everyone likes QWERTY keyboards. There's an alternative keyboard called "Dvorak," which some people prefer. Not to mention foreign-language keyboards.
The iPhone keyboard is software-configurable and -replaceable. Apple could replace it with a Dvorak keyboard or a Cyrillic keyboard (for example) just by downloading new software via iTunes. Try replacing the Blackberry's chicklet keyboard that way.
Then there's the iPhone's autocorrection, which eliminates over 95% of all typing errors and the need to use wierd "text0r" argot. (If the Blackberry keyboard is so great, why do so many messages still look like, "i8 at ofic. can u met me at 4um theutr?")
The coolest thing in mobile is not hardware, it's *software*. If RIMM doesn't understand that, they're in trouble.
