Death Cab, R.E.M. & Modest Mouse at The Mann, Brian Seymour at Fergies and Celebrity Cruises

Mann Oh Mann! Hooray for West Philly, two great shows are coming to the Mann Music Center in June:
- June 12th - Death Cab for Cutie
- June 18th - R.E.M. with Special Guests Modest Mouse and The National.
The Mann, located in scenic Fairmount Park, is a great place to see a show in the summer. Get there early and tailgate on the expansive lawn, lots of trees and lots of shade. You should also check out some Philadelphia Orchestra shows during the week at the Mann starting in July.
Pack some food and wine, chill out on the lawn, stare at the sky and say to yourself… “I love classical music… I hope they play the theme to Indiana Jones or that song from Apocalypse Now.”
Helpful Drinking Tip: Most lawn seats at concert venues like The Mann are sloped, so you might want to pick up these ingenious little wine glass holders to secure your beloved beverage, a must for all outdoorsy winos.
Seymour + Fergies = One Happy Drunk! Celebrate the glory of the spring season with Brian Seymour! He’ll be performing one gigantic set filled with guitars, pints, palaver, a gospel choir and pyrotechnics this Saturday at the almighty Fergie’s Pub! (Gospel choir and pyrotechnics not guaranteed.)
- Saturday, May 10, 9pm. No cover.

Cruise to Mars: Celebrity cruises are popular with all types: gay folks (Rosie), complete losers (John Mayer) and TV geeks like us. I’m saving my pennies so I can go on the Veronica Mars Cruise, but I just might wait until the Celebrity Guests are announced. Don’t want to be stuck on boat all week chatting up C-listers like Duncan Kane and Beaver Casablancas.
Some Time Wasters:
- 21 Best Mugshots Ever
- Early Musical Robots
- Protection from the Atomic Bomb
- European Anatomy Museums
- National Geographic Week in Photos
Video: “I Will Possess Your Heart” by Death Cab for Cutie. A tad longish, but I dig it, very hypnotic, like most of their tunes:

I am headed in for the Deathcab show this Thursday from out of town. My friends and I are hoping to tailgate there, however I was there once before (2003?) and dont remember much of a tailgating scene. As I recall there were all grass lots, and as soon as we parked we were hustled in by the staff. I have been doing some research, and it looks like you can bring alcohol into the mann, but only for certain events. My questions, Can we bring alcohol into this event? and is there a tailgating scene at the Mann, or would we be better off going to a local bar before hand?
Thanks!

Hey Dallas -
Yeah, I wouldn’t plan on tailgating at the Mann. There is certainly no “scene” there, and I don’t even think it’s allowed. Your memory of it is pretty spot-on.
I believe that the only time you can bring your own alcohol into the event is for early orchestral shows if you’re on the lawn…I could be wrong, but whenever I’ve gone to see a full priced show by a band like Death Cab (that starts at 8:00 or beyond), I haven’t brought anything along and don’t recall seeing anyone that did. So, I would definitely suggest going to a local bar beforehand (although also keep in mind that the Mann is in the middle of the park, so there aren’t any bars within walking distance or anything like that…and the closest bar you COULD walk to is probably not where you’d want to be hanging out).
If I were going to a bar beforehand, I would probably think about going to perhaps the Penn Inn in Narberth, or whatever the name of that Irish bar is there - McSomethings…that’s a nice neighborhood and a quick drive…
