Nevada Schedules Training for New Notaries

The Nevada Secretary of State's office has scheduled training for new notaries public on Thursday, April 17, at the Elko Red Lion Inn from 8 a.m. to noon.

The training is designed for new notaries as well as notaries whose appointments expired more than one year ago or any notary who has been cited for a violation in the last four years.

New Nevada Notaries Need Education Now

Effective Oct.1, some applicants for notary public commissions in Nevada will be required to complete a four-hour notary class conducted by the secretary of state’s office. The following individuals will be required to take the class:

  • Anyone applying to become a notary for the first time.
  • Anyone renewing his or her commission if the commission has been expired for more than one year.
  • Anyone renewing a commission who during the preceding four years has been fined for failing to comply with any statute or regulation of the state of Nevada.

A person who has completed a notary education class between July 1, 2007 and Oct. 1, 2007 meets the education requirement.

The secretary’s office conducts classes throughout the state. The cost for the class is $39.

The notary training class is designed to explain the roles and responsibilities of a notary. The class covers the following issues:

  • Properly identifying document signs
  • The notary certificate and how to use it
  • Keeping a notary journal
  • Avoiding mistakes and fines
  • Notary fees and how to calculate them
  • Custody and control the notary stamp and journal

Registration forms and fees must be received 14 days prior to class the date. There will be no refunds.
