Cinching Up the Blogger Bioblitz

Category: BioblitzConservationEcology
Posted on: April 29, 2007 1:50 PM, by Jeremy Bruno

After the past month of planning, promoting and actually surveying, today is the last day of the Blogger Bioblitz (B3). But that doesn't mean we're quite done.

Sara, Jenn and I will be tabulating data over the next week or so, getting a final count of species and shipping the data off to Madhu and Greg for mapping. We're hoping to have everything complete in the first couple weeks.

The link list of B3 posts will be updated tomorrow morning, when I'm sure all the posts are in. If I have missed anyone, e-mail me.

I owe a debt of gratitude to everyone involved. It started with just one idea and blossomed into a working systems of dozens in a matter of weeks. They say the internet is breaking down community. I think that's inaccurate. More people are realizing that our community is larger than our hometown, from Ontario to Panama to Germany and around the world. I hope more of the world community will join us for next year's blitz.

This week I will start a thread at the Google Group to discuss B3 '08, expanding on our successes and troubleshooting '07. Stay tuned.

Thanks for getting Blogger BioBlitz 2007 off the ground. I've had a blast participating, and yes, it has opened up a whole new community of people for me. It'll be interesting to see how it evolves next year....

((By the way, I submitted B3 to BoingBoing -- doubt they'll run it, they're much more oriented towards engineering and info tech than life sciences, but anyway.))

Cool, Dan! If they don't post about it now, we'll ping them again when we announce our stellar results ;-).

I hope you will forgive the intrusion of an outsider, but I found you guys via Google. I work for the National Geographic Society, and we're hosting a BioBlitz with the National Park Service at Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. May 18-19. If you live in the area and have liked the flavor of the Blogger BioBlitz, you should join us! You can sign up at www.nationalgeographic.com/bioblitz. We'll have some top-notch scientists joining us for the weekend, and it should be a lot of fun. We're hoping it will be the first of many BioBlitz's hosted by our two organizations around the country. Join us if you can!

I enjoyed participating in the field work a lot but the paperwork is dragging a bit. I don't have all the information at hand and am having to do a lot of surfing to sort out orders, classes, families, etc. so my information may be a bit late. I'll send in what I have by the end of the week but since I am still spending more time outside the house than in, the task is going slowly.
