Gemei gets saucy with the touchscreen X780 PMP
It was inevitable. We just knew Gemei couldn't hold its own forever, and now it seems the resistance to copying other interfaces has finally failed. The all-too-familiar X780 comes equipped with a 3-inch 400 x 280 resolution display, 4GB of internal memory, a miniSD expansion slot, FM tuner, built-in microphone, TV output and an unspecified emulator for gaming it up. As expected, this thing can handle just about every format known to man including WMA, APE, FLAC, MP3, WAV, ASF, MPEG, AVI, FLV, VOD, PNG, JPG, etc. No one's talking about pricing just yet, but we have a feeling it'll be somewhere between cheap and really cheap.

Raz @ Jul 23rd 2008 12:25AM
not sure where everyone is getting the touch screen from, but it isn't, its push button and it looks like a brick

iPhone button, lol.
HOOPER @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:33PM
I really don't get why manufacturers copy others so blatantly. Do they think they're fooling the consumers? Do they expect us to look at it and think it's an iPhone (in this case)? WHAT IS THE DEAL
Kaminix @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:47PM
Steve: 'Hey, the iPhone is really cool.' (eg. the iPhone has become popular and thus the design too)
Bill: 'Yeah, but it's so expensive!'
Steve: 'Yeah, I know what you mean.'
Bill: 'Hey, have you seen that Meizu phone? That's also kinda cool. (Sort-of-thinking: It looks pretty much the same as the iPhone)'
Steve: 'Yeah, and hell of a lot cheaper + a bunch of other nice things like not needing iTunes!'

The funniest thing is this is such a dumb thing to copy. Most smartphones, WinMo, Symbian, etc, have a "Today" screen, which is a decent summary of your current happenings - calls, meetings, the weather, etc. The iPhone's page full of buttons is pretty much useless in that regard. Yet they go on copying it anyway.
HOOPER @ Jul 22nd 2008 7:06PM
I guess I didn't mean that the iPhone was being copied THAT much here. It just seems like I've been seeing a lot of devices whose interfaces are the square icons on black background with the single button or something like that. The iPhone was the first thing I saw that had that. Maybe somebody else did it first and I missed it.
deyanimay @ Jul 22nd 2008 7:31PM
First of all this is a pmp not a phone so if anything it is copying the ipod touch not the iphone. Since it is a pmp there is no need for a today screen because there are no calls or messages to check and if you need to check your calendar its one push away.
Appdirect @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:37PM
why everything has to be touchscreen these days?
naz @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:48PM
It's cool
Krush @ Jul 22nd 2008 7:04PM
Didn't you even long for a touchscreen when you load up a picture of Jolie in Gia on ur PMP? (I know I need to get a life ...)
grull27 @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:40PM
I don't understand why they can't come up with their own user-friendly interface.
deyanimay @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:44PM
the ui doesn't look too much like an ipod touch but the button does.
Boynamedsue @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:50PM
maybe apple licensed the symbol.
i mean, the play, pause, fast forward and stop buttons are universal, this could be the beginning of a standard for the home button.
who came up with the standard for the aforementioned symbols anyways?

Darion.Lunis @ Jul 23rd 2008 6:39AM
Uhm..if anyone had a patent on a round button with a square... wouldn't it be Sony for all those Playstation (1,2, and 3) controllers with the aforementioned round button with the square on it?
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:51PM
Apple pretty much patented the hell out of their products.. so other companies cant make easy-to-use interfaces too easily
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:53PM
not that they cant.. just harder to
phanbouy @ Jul 22nd 2008 7:33PM
are you pulling an iEye on us?
DefPo3t @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:52PM
This is one instance that copying some else look is acceptable, due to the enormous file support.

jupiterthunder @ Jul 22nd 2008 7:42PM
Why do people act as if Apple was the first to use everything?
Recessed button
Square button to represent home
Touchscreen
Glossy surface
chrome/silver edging
So many thinngs that everyone saw before iPhone ever existed and yet, when someone device has any of those features it "copied the iPhone".
Maybe it did, maybe it didn't. It's not like any of those features failed to exist before Apple sketched them up.
Ted @ Jul 22nd 2008 9:56PM
If the iPhone wasn't the first device to have a round concave black button with a white square that has rounded corners on it for a home button, centered on the shorter edge of the screen, what was?
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:10PM
haha nice ted. I'm with you.
Too many apple haters think that beacause apple didn't invent it that it isn't good enough for them. Their loss, not ours :)
We will continue to use our excellent products and they can learn to use their old tech :)
jupiterthunder @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:30PM
@Ted
Not saying that iPhone wasn't the first to put the recessed button with the square for home together, b/c honestly, I don't know. But can you identify an independent element aside from multitouch that iPhone did first?
I'm just saying every feature that remotely resembles an iPhone is considered to be stolen from the iPhone. I'm no authority, but I'm sure with all the readers here, it would not be too difficult to come up with devices that used elements of the iPhone form factor before the iPhone existed.
The realities of good design is that all things end up looking so much the same.
I mean, were the discussions the same when every mobile in the world had a green call button and a red end call button? Someone has to do it everything first. There was a time when you couldn't buy a car with bucket seats.
jupiterthunder @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:34PM
@SSE
I'm not a Apple-hater by any means. Evident by the fact I was the only person at my place of employment that did anything with Apple products and software.
What I hate on is people that think Apple originated everything it uses in its design and everybody else had to have copied them. It certainly will be true in cases, but not EVERY case.
For the record, I'm a couple months from the end of my contract and am contemplating the iPhone as my next purchase. In the meantime, I'm scouring the market seeing what is best for me.
