Hell's Kitchen: Day 2 - VIDEO

Hell's Kitchen

(S04E02) "I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done." - Petrozza

Here's a tip if you ever find yourself in the position of being a contestant on Hell's Kitchen. If you have to choose two people to go up for elimination, don't choose them for "strategic" or "personal" reasons, at least not this early in the game. And if for some reason you do choose them for those reasons, DON'T ANNOUNCE IT TO EVERYONE. But that's exactly what happened tonight, in one of the more stupid moments by a contestant in the short history of this show.

Remember, whoever you choose, Chef Ramsay has the final say on who goes home...

This week is the week the contestants go through the garbage. I worked in the restaurant business for over 10 years and I never had to do this, but then again I never competed for $250,000 and an executive chef position.

The men won the challenge this week, and their prize was a day with Chef Ramsay on a boat (Bobby mentions The Love Boat). There they were treated to champagne and a beautiful lobster lunch. In fact, the lobster meal was so beautiful that it's probably better than anything these chefs are going to prepare on the show this season. Jean-Phillipe serves the meal on the boat, and at one point Louross says that he looks "prestige." Louross is becoming the hip phrase-maker this year. The chefs get along famously with Ramsay, and it's always funny to see how nice Ramsay is to the contestants away from the kitchen and then how hard and nasty he is when they get back in the kitchen and screw up a short time later (yeah, I know, the time is compressed, but it's amusing to see the contrast). Meanwhile, the ladies are back in the kitchen preparing for the night's service.

The kitchen opens, and while the men actually get some food out on time, the women are drowning. They're all screwed up, they can't get the meals straight, they're sticking their tongues out as they cook. Jason says that "a room full of girls is useless. What are they having, a Tupperware party?" I doubt that any Tupperware party had this much swearing, but I've never been to a Tupperware party so I might be wrong about that.

Ramsay puts Craig and Roseann in the dining room and this leads to two for the more insane things I've ever seen on this show. Rosann actually holds tickets back because she's afraid of overloading the kitchen too much, which leads to the orders being two hours behind. Ramsay's jaw drops to the floor. What's even funnier is what happens to Craig. While carrying a chair across the dining room to a table, he whacks a blonde in the back of the head with one of the legs and doesn't even notice. Jean-Phillippe does and orders him to apologize to her. I wonder if Hell's Kitchen diners have to sign a waiver before they eat at the restaurant, in case they're injured or poisoned by bad chefs?

Of course, chaos reigns and so many things get screwed up in the kitchen (they get behind in orders, meat is served rare when it's supposed to be medium, the scallops are screwed up - this is the second week in a row that there's a problem with scallops, after last week's odd scene of Dominic just standing at his station holding raw scallops in his hand). Ramsay screams, throws food, closes the kitchen down, and the customers leave. He declares that both teams pretty much suck, but the men were the best of the badness. He chooses Corey to pick the two chefs who should be up for elimination.

And now we come to the part I mentioned at the beginning of the review. Ramsay tells Corey that it shouldn't be hard to pick the two women that should be up for elimination, but she surprises him by picking Christina ("for strategic reasons") and Jen ("for personal reasons"). At this point Ramsay is so stunned that he actually says "f**k me." Corey not only picks two people that probably shouldn't have been picked, but she announces her reasons why, which don't go over well with anyone. You know why you shouldn't tell competitors that you're picking them for strategic or personal reasons in this game? Because Ramsay has the final say in who goes! You might have to actually play alongside the person you just insulted or pissed off. Christina cries during her defense of herself (which the men laugh at), while Jen goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about why she should stay.

And guess what happens? Ramsay doesn't listen to Corey at all and picks Sharon instead! He says she should have paid more attention to her cooking instead of her makeup.

Something tells me Corey isn't going to be popular in the kitchen next week.

Corey's honesty was...
