SXSW ‘08 Review: A-Trak, Kid Sister, Clipse @ Emo’s
March 14, 2008 - Emo's, Austin, TX
The Hype: Even if you weren’t helping foster all the “Britney is performing with N.E.R.D.” rumors, or checking out the Paramore show, there was still plenty to do at SXSW on Friday. At Emo’s, publicity company Biz 3 was having its annual shindig. And unlike last year, they found a suitable space — one of the biggest, most popular venues in austin — to hold their party, which included hipster-hop artists like Flosstradamus, A-Trak, Kid Sister and headliners the Clipse.
The Show: Kid Sis was the biggest draw of the night, packing ‘em in (her crowd was even larger than Clipse’s) with her brand of club-friendly raps. As she danced effortlessly across the stage spitting out clever, cute rhymes about beepers and nail salons, two famous faces looked out from the crowd: Perry Ferrell and Ice Cube. Both were in town for their own SXSW showcases, and both were interested in a fast-rising star. She performed her hit single, “Pro Nails,” along with a lot of other tracks that will show up on her debut album, Koko B. Ware, later this year.
After a dance-heavy set from Kanye’s pal A-Trak, it was time for the main attraction, the Clipse, who grind out performances across the country like they were an indie-rock band. This was their second performance of the week and, much like their first, they worked the audience through a litany of hits from their most recent album, Hell Hath No Fury, and their latest mixtape, We Got It for Cheap, Volume 3. The Clipse crowd was dedicated, eeking out every last syllable along with Malice and Pusha. They’ve somehow fixed a grip on indie-rock fans, and that was certainly evident tonight as they were treated like rock stars from another country.
The Verdict: This was definitely one of the better parties of the week, both in terms of balance of music and size of crowd. The club got so packed at one point, the fire marshal nearly shut it down. The show, however, had to go on.
