Streetcar have many cars in London and a few in Southampton, Brighton, Guildford, Canbridge and soon in Oxford. That still leaves an awful lot of people who are nowhere near a car club, which is why yours2share helps people find partners to create their own informal car club.

It has cars in several locations: Reading, High Wycombe, Poole, Portsmouth and (soon) Oxford. When I first found the website, I was surprised as these aren’t the large cities that are the normal locations for car clubs. I’ve since found out that they are car clubs that were going to close because they weren’t economic. They were then taken over by Commonwheels, which I assume is somehow publically funded.

What particularly interested me is that you can approach them to set up a car club. Once they’ve got sufficient people, they will set it up for you. So if you use yours2share to find people who live near you who want to share a car, once you have a group of people, you can ask Comonwheels to organise it for you. You can, of course, set up and run an informal car club yourself. But I think many people would prefer this to be done by someone else.

Someone recently posted an ad on yours2share which I’ve reluctantly decided I have to remove because it isn’t really about sharing an asset, or sharing the cost of anything. But it did make me think hard about the boundaries of yours2share.

The ad read:

I am the catalyst for a new group, the South Norfolk Writers’ Circle. My purpose is to give new writers an opportunity to mix with and learn from those who are more experienced - both professional writers, and people in the publishing industry. To provide an arena in which those of us more knowledgeable will listen to, critique, advise, and encourage other writers. Perhaps with some, to “disciple” them, to mentor them, and whether they write for a hobby or have big dreams, to lift them in those dreams.

At the same time, even the most advanced of us are always learning, and I’m looking for writers who are willing to share their own minds and talents, and also who are enthusiastic about wanting to discover what’s in other writer’s heads.

I would love to end up with a really diverse group of people, of all ages and levels of experience, feeding and feeding off each other’s aspirations and mental stirrings. Who knows what brilliance will be the outcome? We could end up with out own “Inkling Bar”, like Lewis and Tolkien!

So, if you’re a writer (of any level) and are willing to share, we meet twice a month - on the First Saturday afternoon, and Third Thursday evening.

First Saturdays: Surlingham Ferry House, meeting starts 2.30 pm, optional socialising / eating from about an hour earlier.

Third Thursdays: George & Dragon, Thurton, just off the A146. Meeting starts 7.00 pm; optional socialising / eating from an hour or so earlier.

I have been thinking for some while that training is an obvious thing to share, particularly if someone wants expensive one-to-one training that could be one-to-two or one-to-three, provided the other people can be found. Personal trainers are another good example of training that can be shared. It is often easier to keep going and more fun if there are two or three of you, rather than just one.

There are two key differences between creating specialist groups and training: training is expensive and the partners need to be like-minded.

I’m glad that the major managed car clubs such as City Car Club are starting to become more mainstream. But I’m keen to ensure people also know that they can set up their own informal car club. This is particularly appropriate for people who live in rural areas and villages and towns where the managed car clubs are not ecomonic. The baked bean club is a great example of an informal car club operating in Hastings.

Informal car clubs are also appropriate for people who want to share a less mainstream car: a convertible or classic car. Often these kinds of informal car club have only two or three owners.

I hope that the Daily Mail add this to the mainonline website so I can link to this. It isn’t there yet. However in looking for this article, I found another mention of yours2share on the 30th June which I didn’t know about. I knew we had been mentioned somewhere because on that day the website traffic exploded, but as all the traffic came in direct, I didn’t know where it was coming from.

Similarly on Friday, the traffic increased markedly, but until someone rang me earlier today to get in contact Eleanor, I didn’t know the cause. Thank you junglepr, the PR is paying off.

Having had a quick read of the detailed information available on the website, this struck me as well thought out and an interesting proposition for film buffs who are looking for high risk investments in which they can take a personal interest.

It’s not often that one of my favourite TV shows includes a good example of fractional ownership. (Even if it wrongly calls it timeshare). It also explains why you should not to get carried away with on-line auctions, what sniping means and why you can’t rely upon snipers coming to your rescue!

It’s not often that one of my favourite TV shows includes a good example of fractional ownership. (Even if it wrongly calls it timeshare). It also explains why you should not to get carried away with on-line auctions, what sniping means and why you can’t rely upon snipers coming to your rescue!

The clip is from the Big Bang Theory: Time-Share Time Machine.

Just in case you don’t know the difference, fractional ownership means the owners own the title of the asset. Time share means that people have bought the right to use the asset for a short period of time, every year (or other period) for a given number of years. Fractional rental is similar to timeshare but usually the payments are made over the period of time rather than in one lump sum at the start, and can be ended with a relatively short period of notice.

For example the guys in the Big Bang Theory, are setting up fractional ownership. If one guy had paid $150 for the right to have the time machine for three months a year for five years, this would be timeshare. If he had agreed to have the use of the time machine for three months a year in return for an annual fee of $40, with both parties able to give two months notice that the agreement should end, then this would be fractional rental.
