British soul and R&B singer Joss Stone has landed a key role in the upcoming third season of Showtime's "The Tudors."

Showtime confirms that Stone will play Anne of Cleves (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), the fourth wife of Henry the VIII.

While this will be Stone's most extensive acting experience to date, history buffs know that her stay on "The Tudors" will probably be limited.

To be more specific, Stone will appear in three episodes, currently shooting in Dublin.

The daughter of a German nobleman, Anne of Cleves was matched with Henry VIII at the urging of his chancellor, Thomas Cromwell. Henry approved of the match after seeing a portrait of Anne painted by Hans Holbein the Younger, but when he actually met her, he was significantly less impressed. Since Stone is generally accepted as a fairly attractive chanteuse, this makes her casting a bit of a stretch.

[Spoiler warning!] Henry's marriage to Anne was brief and, if you trust such things, unconsummated, but at least she kept her head. Let's just say the same cannot be said for Cromwell.

The third season of "The Tudors," set to return to Showtime in 2009, is expected to deal with Anne and her predecessor in Henry's bed, Anita Briem's Jane Seymour.

The 21-year-old Stone is best known for her albums "The Soul Sessions," "Mind, Body & Soul" and "Introducing Joss Stone." She made her acting debut in 2006's "Eragon" and will also appear in the British comedy "Snappers."
