TV Review: 'The Real Housewives of Atlanta'

By Hanh Nguyen

October 06, 10:40 AM

Shereeleakes Bravo's The Real Housewives of Atlanta, with its showy elite and rampant consumerism, seems rather out of touch considering America's dire financial situation.

Of course, after witnessing a distressingly obnoxious panel in which the Hotlanta housewives came off as high-priced harpies, this reporter admits to having great reluctance to even watch the show. The first episode, however, isn't that bad  ... or at least no worse then the previous two incarnations of the franchise set in Orange County and New York City.

What Atlanta has going for it is obvious: Predominately black women are shown to enjoy the same level of social and financial success as their white counterparts on the other two shows.

Although it's not fair to judge these women in real life, on a reality show the rules are different. Just like characters in scripted shows, these women must be fascinating characters; whether they're people we can identify with/admire in their manner or lifestyle, people that entertain us with their quirks or over-the-top ways or even people you love to hate.

Lisa Wu Hartwell and DeShawn Snow, the wealthiest ones being an NFL and NBA wife, respectively, are arguably the most grounded of the bunch because their focus is broader than just the Atlanta social scene and shopping.

Hartwell, who is of black and Chinese heritage, is admirable for her boundless energy and productivity. Not only does she own the real estate firm Hartwell & Associates, she also owns a jewelry line and a baby clothing line, is a new mom, acts, models, paints and writes. She's a no muss, no fuss type, even when it comes to clothes. Although Hartwell is a good egg, she's not that entertaining. In fact, she seems to have so much going for her, she invites envy.

Deshawn_2 Snow, on the other hand, has many of the same advantages, but her manner is so casual and at times unguarded that she's easier to sympathize with. Even though we see her 15,000 sq. ft. estate and Snow going through the process of hiring an estate manager, we're reminded of her roots when the estate manager mentions that Snow's father had a special request for his visit: Bailey's Irish Cream and vodka to be stocked. The whole exchange makes Snow giggle.

The others, however, are of the more conspicuous consumption variety, God bless 'em. NeNe Leakes promises to be as loud and crazy as Vicki Gunvalson, her Orange County counterpart, but without the work ethic. Sheree Whitfield is perhaps the one who's shown to be the most aware of her appearance and status. In the first episode, she throws a birthday party for herself in order to get publicity. Instead of earning the respect, she loudly and colorfully demands it. She's currently in the middle of divorce proceedings and refuses to settle unless she gets seven figures.

Naturally, no Housewives show would be complete without a rivalry, and Leakes and Whitfield's friction drives much of the drama in the first episode. Caught between the two is Leakes' friend Kim Zolciak, the only white Atlanta housewife featured. She owns up to being materialistic, which is good since her lifestyle is funded by her celebrity boyfriend, whom she keeps anonymous by only talking to him on the phone and referring to him as Big Papa. Well, it appears that if Zolciak wants an Escalade, Big Papa is only too happy to give her the checkbook for the whim.

Each of the Atlanta women have children, which is always interesting to see how they balance that with their social lives. Only Whitfield is single (separated) though, so perhaps the dating drama will be kept to a minimum this time around. It's too bad. Quinn Fry's dating dilemmas on Orange County, especially with the 26-year-old boy toy, were highly entertaining.

All in all, there are no real surprises in this third version of the franchise. There's still an orgy of excessive spending, jockeying for recognition and questionable taste. It's all a bit too familiar, and maybe, just maybe, audiences have finally gotten their fill of watching people richer than they are enjoy life more. While we're strategizing on when to fill up on gas, how to stay gainfully employed and how to balance grocery shopping with eating out, it's asking a lot for us to really care about those who write $68,000 checks for a car in one go, never wear the same outfit twice or have a bowling alley in their basement.

Kimzolciak So while The Real Housewives of Atlanta isn't appointment viewing or even DVR-worthy, it's not by any means boring, but you do have to be in the mood to watch.

How does this cast compare to the OC and NYC casts? Who do you hate? Who do you love?

really, who cares about these women?? this sounds like the worst cast yet, and it will be the first run of these "housewives" series that i'm not watching at all...yuck!!

Finally, a "housewives" show I'd rather watch than those uppitty Orange women.

KG | Oct 7, 2008 3:29:03 AM | #

BOOOOO! I hae already changed the channel and it was only 15 minutes into the show. Who wants to see people bragging about writing a check for a car when so many people right now are losing everything??? At least in the OC version, the women were not so open about their money. For gosh sakes some of them at least worked and Vicki worked very hard. She didn't have to act liek she was all that just because she could wed a pro-athlete. I'm done.

SJ | Oct 7, 2008 6:14:15 PM | #

Give me a flippen break, why is it that only black woman who grew up with nothin have to talk about what they have today... I totally don't care about their rediculous gated homes, how much they spend at a boutique and their so called fashion parties. These woman are so over done. And give me a break about the one that hired a house manager. It was clear that even her husband was not on the same reality page as his wife, who clearly was only doing it for the show. Do it yourself and save your money...

these women are a 1000 times worse than the OC women!!

Is it any wonder that so many professional athletes wind up destitute in their later years. I know their pockets are deep, but THIS deep???? The spending habits of these women are offensive and immoral.

I tuned in to the first show, but won't be back.

connie | Oct 8, 2008 6:44:39 AM | #

I can't believe these are the women you chose to represent Atlanta. What an embarrasement to Atlanta and the black community.

tracy pruitt | Oct 8, 2008 8:27:59 AM | #

DaShawn Snow "always knew she was gonna be someone BIG" and talks like she has achieved that by marrying someone with money. I have nothing against money, but don't act like YOU'RE the one that put it in the bank.

Lisa Goo | Oct 8, 2008 1:04:25 PM | #

I like them all, and I can see myself in their Stuart Weitzman shoes swinging my Eric Javits handbag. Lighten up everyone, of course stocks have plunged, real estate market is very bad but can't we have some fantasy?? It is election year after all so is it politically incorrect to have some harmless fun? Right on Atlanta Ladies

Cindee | Oct 8, 2008 4:55:57 PM | #

What disturbs me most is the the producers chose women who have money due to their husbands. I am a black woman. My brother was a millionaire because he had a business. My mother is a millionaire because she has a cosmetic business. My husband and I do quite well. My husband and I have nearly five degrees between us. NONE of us have any money from professional sports. This show suggests that only sports can make black people rich. It is really disturbing.

T | Oct 8, 2008 10:19:35 PM | #

Tacky new money, bragging, trash-talking, catty women. YUCK

| Oct 11, 2008 6:29:18 PM | #

I agree with "T". The show should have spotlighted career women not women who married well or have a "sugar daddy" "Big Pappa". As a successful Hispanic woman. I would much rather see the fruits of hard work and reality,TO marry Money is not an accomplishment that is keeping me interested in the shpw. The lady with the daughter from Evander Holyfield which did not need to be mentioned must not have been to Evanders' child support case where he states "He's Broke" and can't afford to pay his child support.

Housewives Atlanta is a HOT MESS!

Fun to watch for comic relief, but let's be real...anyone who is REALLY on the social register would not consent to participate in this circus.

They do appear to be doing a better job with their children than the OC women. However, I pray the money lasts because they do not appear to be skilled at doing much more than spending the money their husband's earn. It would have been nice to see atleast one self-made African American woman in the mix but again, someone of that stature would not have the time or temperament to be featured in this type of show.

Ladies, PLEASE step away from the handbags and the shoes...put your money in the bank and save it for future generations!

Let's hope that these are characters exaggerated for the benefit of the TV.

I love the show, I knew there would be haters because the majority of the Women are Black. In fact, they are willing to have diverse friends of different races where as OC and NY did not.
Many folks would rather see Black Folks in the projects like the TV Show 'Good Times'. Several of these women have their own Business and I am sure many of them are educated. All of the wives are not associated with husbands that are in professional sports. The OC and NY housewives shows really were boring. Keep in mind the show was filmed before the Stock Plunge. What about the AIG executives spending 500K of the US folks money on spa and golf? I can not wait until the next Atlanta show.

HF | Oct 12, 2008 9:10:13 PM | #

Correct me if i'm wrong, the name of the show is "Real housewives of Atlanta" if your in the middle of divorce, that would mean you are no longer a house wife, but a single parent. If you are trying to settle for xx amount of dollars, so you can keep your staff, that would mean with out your husband (pro ball player)you are not only BROKE, but PHONY!Then you have a birthday and totally dis one of your girls, because as much as you would never admit it she is one of the most realess women on the show. So you bash her to make yourself look better. mean while through out the show all We (the public) see is SHOPPING(for exspensive bags and clothing)for parties. You guys are giving real housewives, who care for there children and spouses a bad name and sending the wrong MESSAGE! I was very disappointed when I watched the show and expected much better. Atlanta, is full of Successful women who are doing BIG things and going Places and we should all be proud.I would have to say I am not PROUD of the show.. God Bless You all!!! Ne Ne, do your thing girl, i'm not mad at you.

I am really going to enjoy the show....yeah the economy is down right now...but that doesnt mean people with money have stop living there glamours lives.....Actually the show breaks the monotony of all the bad news...it actually uplifts your spirit for the hour or soo...which is desepartly needed. So stop hating and give the show a chance...

Sassy Shon | Oct 14, 2008 7:31:24 PM | #

This is terrible. This show in some ways is a disgrace to black women. Lisa, you go girl. You have yourself together and knows what a real women does in a relationship. Meaning not being in the shadow of their man.Your standing right next to him, seems like he's putting in 100% and you are too. I like to see a hard working women (of any color) with children. For that matter without children. So many women have the notion to get a man to pay the bills so they have time to be lazy and nasty. Show your children vaules and commitment. NeNe, you have a little self esteem issues, work on them. You are seen, you don't have to be loud. You are really not as ghetto as you seem, are you? Kim, your good. Save some of that money girl, just in case Big Pappa doesn't make it to the alter. You seem like a very nice real person. DaShawn, WTF, do you really need people to run your house. I really hope that the segments of your interviews with potential personal assistants were cut because you seem to be weak. Your husband is so humble, looks like he just wants to stay in his dream and play ball. You were destine for greatness you say, Girl you married a ball player. Let's get a clue and get it together. Sharee, not sure about you yet, who is the real Sharee.

RJ | Oct 14, 2008 7:42:21 PM | #

The name of this show is called "The REAL Housewives of Atlanta"...nothing real about this show. Phonier than phony comes. I'd love to know what percentage of Atlanta housewives can relate to these bunch of money whoring women.
And Kim, all you are teaching your kids is to pimp themselves out to get what they want. I feel sorry for your kids.
Oh, and Nene, who's bratty kid was complaining because his cake had wax on it. Oh for crying out loud! Teach your kids what is REALLY important in life.
BRAVO, please don't insult us by shoving down our throats that THIS is REAL life.
What a disgrace of a show.
buh-bye!
And, no, Im not jealous because my husband makes a 6 figure salary and I AM a stay at home housewife with no need to go out to work at the moment.

the real one here... | Oct 15, 2008 11:27:54 AM | #

wow....6 figures

jan | Oct 16, 2008 12:37:23 AM | #

But really,

Everyone seems to have such a strong negative opinion of this show and these women. How in the hell is it immoral and ofensive for these women to spend money that belongs to them? Money whoring? These men married these women for a reason. I use to work with Lisa before she "married well" and she is one of the kindest people around. So dont hate and be bitter because you are not living the lifestyle.

Jan | Oct 16, 2008 12:46:23 AM | #

Trash with cash! This was not the time to air this pieces of garbage during this economic crisis.

Jody | Oct 16, 2008 8:25:48 AM | #

I'm curious...did the other incarnations of this show excite as much controversy? I do watch these programs (no matter the zip code) because I enjoy mindless non-taxing entertainment while I run on a treadmill. I find this new group of "housewives" fit the bill as well as any other. I do live in Atlanta (and am a housewife), and have no problem with these seemingly frivilous Peaches. Afterall, this is a show taped for entertainment. We're hardly going to see them doing any day-to-day-we-could-all-relate-to-them sort of activities. Ergo, as long as I'm tied to my treadmill, I'll watch...once I step off, I really don't think about any of the shows.

N | Oct 16, 2008 6:15:32 PM | #

You can't compare the Atlanta H.W.s to the others. If the only thing these ladies were doing was botox and breast implant then it wouldn't be that big of a deal. At least the women in the other series worked for there money. This reinforces two very damanging sterotypes,, one that af am's are materialistic, and two that you just need to find you a man (or a big papa)and you'll live like a queen.

angie | Oct 17, 2008 3:02:41 PM | #

Oh, and also that in order to somebody you need a whole lot of money!

angie | Oct 17, 2008 3:03:27 PM | #

This has nothing to do about money or success, this has to do with class and style. These women have neither. That is why they are on the show. Modern day cartoons and hours of cable TV to fill. It's sad! At least Victoria Gotti had a story. Her family killed people.

Ken | Oct 17, 2008 7:23:09 PM | #

The show is strictly for entertainment, and apparently it's got people talking so the job is getting done. Why is anyone trying to make it more than that??

I am a african american millionaire housewife whith children who is a partner with my husband in making the $$ and I am in no way like these women. They dont represent me or my lifestyle, they represent themselves only.

I wish this society would stop making one person or group of people represent the masses, especially if it's a "minority" group. That is really unfair!

In perspective | Oct 18, 2008 11:53:39 AM | #

I don't know why people are so upset about this show, I love it. If this was a show about white women doing the same thing no one would mention anything. Stop comparing them with the other oc and ny women. They are not them. It seems that we have some haters out there. Nene and Kim are so down to earth I could hang out with them any day of the week. Kim save some of that money big papa is giving just in case he's not around to long, protect yourself. Lisa I love your drive, but I would have to have a 5 hour energy drink to hang out with you girl. Dashawn please raise your own children you don't need a nanny, as you can see they don't listen to you. Sharee ( Ms. Diva ) it isn't always about you. Save some of that money just in case the divorce doesn't go your way. I like all of the ladies of this show Do What You Do, forget the haters.

Delisa | Oct 18, 2008 4:36:17 PM | #

With the exception of Lisa it does not appear you ladies know that money and class do not always go together. I am here to help you understand the difference. I have been brought up upper class and my family has not only help grow the economy they have made many anonymous contributions to humanity.

Please know Deshaw I am well aware of how foundations are created and most likely it was a recommendation by your husband’s accountant or lawyer to set up one for a tax deduction. DeShaw, I do commend you helping young woman however; it appears you are more interested in the notoriety and status than genuinely helping someone. I also see you like to let the world know of your opulence. DeShaw, opening your self up to this kind of media exposure can create a vulnerable situation for people to attack you and your family. You also do not appear to be cultured or aware of the world around you. It is clear you married into money however; you have not grasped the concept of class. I am certain if you were exposed to intelligent, sophisticated individuals (rather than the sport and entertainment world) you would not be able to keep up in a conversation and would have very little in common with these people.

In regard to NeNe although you are unrefined, with a crass tell it like it is attitude you appear to be true to yourself.

Kim, you are the one that needs to be aware the most that money and class do not always go together, enough said.

Sheree, yes you are a beautiful and stylish woman however it is painfully clear of your insecurity by demanding people’s attention. I heard your quote of people being intimidated by your success. It does not appear you were successful on your own, you simply married into money. You will most likely have to marry again to sustain your standard of living. I have worked with many bright, accomplished, educated woman and would predict if we were to meet at an event I am sure after a five minute conversation you would be ignored.

Lisa, I admire your drive. You inspire me to work harder and the best of luck with your endeavors.

Good luck ladies.

"Tacky new money, bragging, trash-talking, catty women. YUCK"

Yup, all in that over-done pretentious Atlanta way.
BORING!!

biggodhead | Oct 21, 2008 5:14:56 PM | #

Okay, let's actually make a show about women who actually act like real women. It's okay to have money and actually brag about, but I only one women actuaaly taking time out to spend with her child and that's the white girl Okay, Bitches get your shit together. And for black women to really showcase their bitchness publicly actually means that these women besides the chinese girl really have it going on. I really like her character, she's a GO Girl. She actually came into the marriage with a few change, the only couple I'm proud of is the true Power Couple. All the others please let's all pray for these kind of women. Nene is a trip, although she's loud and irritable, she's definitely a more spirited one. TOO GHETTO, okay ladies.. This show only perceives women to be trophies and objects to the most insecure men. But whatever it takes to get paid, I guess they should have as many children as possible to kep the checks rolling in. Oh, and don't forget his SSN, PLEASE!! And Sheree, keep tract of all your spending, and watch out for the things you say on television..Bragging about what to expect from a settlement is so tacky. And you never know who's watching. Beggers can't always be choosy. Deshawn, come off the whit horse, you only have what you have due to your husbands' obsession. Start cleaning your own damn house.. Your LAZY!!

Dana E. Moultrie | Oct 22, 2008 8:12:04 AM | #

I've watched one show and it was my last. However, these women need to spend more time in the gym and less time shopping. A couple of these women have a higher opinion of themselves than they should.

Cindy | Oct 22, 2008 10:07:19 AM | #

This cast is awful. White/Black trailor trash with money.

Give me the wives from New York any day. Even at their worst, those ladies have class. These ladies are one step above the hired help but act like they work in the basement. And they're mean and bitchy. Who wants to watch that? Not me! Bye, bye!

Pat | Oct 22, 2008 2:02:46 PM | #

In my opinion, this is a poor representation of well off “African Americans”. Why couldn’t Bravo find the some educated, cultured and elicit housewives? All African American’s that have money are not entertainers or sports figures.

My opinion | Oct 22, 2008 7:52:28 PM | #

The black bourgeois who are complaining about the Atlanta housewives need to shut the hell up. Whether it's new or old money, they have it and they don't have to proove shit to anybody especially you bourgeois darkies and your honkie counterparts. YOU B-Darkies HAVE NO DAMN POWER over anyone and anything and most of you are imitations of racist, snobby white folks. You uphold all of the ignorant mess they do and say...and then you imitate it. There's nothing original about you.

You go Ne Ne and DeShawn. At least you're trying to stay grounded and true to who you are...and not elitist snobs like the uppidty darkies on this board.

DonnaYT | Oct 23, 2008 10:25:12 AM | #

...and the ladies from Orange County and New York weren't any better. They were just as materalistic classless, crude, and VAIN AS HELL. But because they were white - for some of you (especially the bourgeois darkies - that made it right. BULL!

On top of that, the New York wives were BORING AS HELL. I stopped watching after 2 episodes.

GO ATLANTA WIVES...ignore the haters!

The only one who gots it going on is Lisa, the rest of them is a mess. You all are not real at all. I personally grew-up with Nene in Athens,Ga. And she was a mess then and still is she have never had anything and she always look at mens to take care of her,now she got her a old sugar daddy, and still have not did nothing for herself. If all those women did not meet there husband what would they be doing now. I have been watching all real housewifes oc newyork and now alanta. So far I think they are all fun It is fun to see all the stuff they by and there houses. I can enjoy watching these women because I am a very simple housewife who doesn't have to work as hard as these women. I think they do a great job entertaining but it must be exhausting to keep all that up. Their consumerism is good for the economy. I like the make-up artist and the stylist scenes. There are alot of pitfalls to having so much money.

I watched the first show and was so disgusted that I refuse to watch another episode. The women are so materialistic and TACKY! Wow, this is the first time I have watched this show. 10 minutes into it - I have come to my first impression. "Fake" white girl "country singer" don't even know her name. So shallow, so cookie cutter blonde with big boobs. Nothing stands out or makes me say "wow what a nice person she deserves all that money , etc" I can't say she really appreciates anything given to her. This is the first 10 minutes mind you. I will not tune in again. Sorry :(

The wives on each show get more and more materialistic...OC wives, then NYC...then Atanta...I wonder if any of them could stomach going to bed at 9pm and setting an alarm for 4am...the OC wives were more real.....the New York ones were bad....and Atlanta the worst....have any of them ever worried about the price of a gallon of gas?

Initially I was very disappointed with Bravo for this version of the Housewives franchise, but after some reflection, this may be their best one yet. This one has DRAMA and it is touching viewers on many levels. There is the controversy of the caliber of these women, their excessive spending during this economy (even though filming took place before the crisis), their lack of class, style and education, how they obtained their wealth, and so much more. If nothing else, this show provides an hour of mindless entertainment, and to be honest, after a long day of work, kids and life in general....mindless entertainment is just what the doctor ordered. I don't necessarily "like" these women and what they represent...I find myself flinching quite a bit during each episode at the poor grammar, loudness, and ignorance of these women, but if they are willing to put their lives out there for public to view, I am willing to watch.

While I agree that Real Housewives of Atlanta is a tacky show, I've noticed that Lisa Wu has received much credit for being hard-working. This is certainly how she is perceived on the show. And while I don't knock her hustle, it is unfair to claim that she is any better than the other housewives when, in fact, she has married well TWICE. She went from one rich husband to the next. So yes, she seems to be hardworking, but it's easy to follow your passions when you are always able to find someone else to foot the bill.

RUN LISA!!!What are you doing with this group of mean dumb, weak women. All of them living off the success of their mates or soon to be x-mates. When the money ends, all they will have are some scuffed up shoes... No one has commented on the 15.000 dollar over the top birthday party Kim gave her embarassed and self proclaimed 'best friend'daughter Brelle (sp?)"mom im happy but your making such a big deal about everything" at least the kid 'get's it'....Come on Kim or bimbo mom.. no one i know has had a all day fashion show for kids boring no effort party! THEY are eleven.. what did you need a party planner for? They went from your town house to the hotel, then to the store, then to the cake shop, then back to the hotel..boring!No different than a day in car pool. Somehow you managed to make it all about YOU...a massage, drinks and brow beat the manager out of the party planing fee...in front of your daughter. Great example you are... hell you even hated the cake...and the gifts you gave her should have been opened before her friends came so they wouldn't feel badly that all they have is a Olsen Twins purse from Wal-Mart! And Kim if you really knew your kid, that's exactly all a eleven year old should have on their arm. Kim your a 'blessed' mistress and it won't be long till the press finds out who this 'big poppa' is and he might back out when he is exposed, hope your a big star like Faith Hill and can support yourself! My gut feeling is that this guy might be in a messy divorce with maybe a spoiled x-wife much like your other new bff Sheree...and waiting to settle his own 7 figure divorce settlement....hey are you thinking what im thinking???? WHAT IF Big Poppa is really BOB Whitfield!! NeNe you need the last laugh...that would be sweet!! HHHHAAA!

Its not about the spending really its just the whole no appreciation that life could change that seems to be unsettling. Like with Sheree it does seem she is one lawsuit or settlement away from poverty. I wonder how the ex football player she was married to is doing, and how he is living given it appears she took him to the cleaners. As far as Ne Ne well we all know of a Ne Ne. Kim spending and habits seem sickening, however to each their own...I do hope she puts some of that cash aside for a rainy day. Lisa did have the help of her husbands to start the business but its really her efforts that moved the business forward so she does deserve some credit for that. Mrs. Snow is cute and appears real. She just needs someone to help her with charity fundraising. Who cares if she can't maintain a conversation among elite black woman, most people find that kind of talk and crowd boring anyways. Yes, the old addage find a guy who is rich and marry or date him and the riches will follow seem to be a theme in this series.

Tacky, bragging, snobish... Neither beauty nor brains.. Hope this show is not aired abroad.. Imagine the kind of message 'Real Housewives' spreads across the world about the materialistic, pretensious American 'class'.. escpecially at this hour of economic melt-down.. Shame on you OC, NY n Atlanta AVATARS...

Hellow | Nov 5, 2008 11:51:02 AM | #

It is hilarious to see women who cannot even pronounce the word "ask" try to show how much "class" they have. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. The two who are able to string together a sentence "Lisa and Sheree" would be nothing without sleeping with rich men. Basically everyone on this show are little more than high paid prostitutes.

Lisa K | Nov 6, 2008 9:53:34 AM | #

Kim is a disgusting women. She's a waste of life and she's also pretty ugly.

monica | Nov 6, 2008 11:45:26 AM | #

@Lisa K. I'm from Atlanta. Trust. The majority of natives pronounce 'ask' as 'ax.' Its the dialect and nothing to do with class or being ignorant. I've seen other people criticize this on other boards. Its the SOUTH!!!

Lighten up everyone! And, Why is it bad if you marry into money? This isn't something new and whites have done it for centuries so to suggest that your no one because you marry money is not fair,I love the Franchise and i in fact do DVR it, Love it. And for everyone who looks down on those who marry into money i think only wish they could be so fortunate! As i stated before whites have always done it and now that black woman are doing it everyone has a problem with it Mainly whites- and some High nosed Blacks, But if they had married white woman then that would be OK!

Angel | Nov 9, 2008 6:49:52 AM | #

That's right lots of haters and, Perhaps the reason i love the show so much is because i am not, Maybe because i too married money - not as much but enough so i don't have to work and, Am in the process of trading in my Toyota Landcruiser for a Escalade or, Range rover or, a Lexus truck which looks exactly like my landcruiser..With the lexus name! Although I'm not as well off as these ladies i don't hate because my life has been "Fortunate" as well.

OH and for all you haters i had a career as a Paralegal,I am black and we decided i would stay home w / the kids: So don't hate.

Angel | Nov 9, 2008 6:58:26 AM | #

Tanya Topete- get your facts together She is Evander Holyfeild's daughter NOT Sheree's daughter she is however Sheree's Assistant...Haters

ONE MORE THING! ALL THIS LOVE FOR NeNe SHE IS PLUCKED from the ghetto she is so loud and obnoxious no class and is clearly an ex HOODRAT who forgot to leave it at the "EXCLUSIVE GATES" She " NOW" calls home, Give me a break.

Angel | Nov 9, 2008 7:10:57 AM | #

This show is a prime example of "Money Can't Buy Class" Must be really embarrasing for other black women. I am white but I do know this is not your typical black woman.

Viewers, we must keep in mind that this is just TV. You are supposed to become filled with emotions (good or bad) that is what keeps shows on television. Yes, Ne-Ne is Ghetto Fab!, Sheree is full of herslef, Lisa is making it happen, DaShawn is the peacemaker and Kim, well o.k. you got me on that one. Anyway, we all know people like that or close to that (with or without the money. Lighten up or simply change the station.

Life | Nov 9, 2008 3:34:30 PM | #

Wow! It is amazing how much dislike individuals have for women on a reality show.I happen to LOVE the show. I went to college in Atlanta and honestly I met many women who were much like those represented on the show. Before you tally all your criticism about the ATL housewives, check your facts. Both the NY & Orange Cty housewives shows had women who were not married (e.g. Quinn & Bethanny). DeShawn said she met her husband Eric while they were both in college & NeNe went to Clark University where her oldest son will attend. So claiming they are uneducated is inaccurate. So, for those of you who find the humor and entertainment we'll keep watching and help the ATL housewives roar in the ratings.

Cecile | Nov 10, 2008 4:03:20 PM | #

I very much enjoy this piece of fluff, cringe-inducing though it is. It is interesting to see how we all take the time to comment on what is really a piece of fiction. I suspect that none of these women is as crass as she appears on the show. Don't forget that these "Real" Housewives shows have a formula, and jam the women brave enough to expose themselves into preordained characters and conficts. Yes, the spending is crazy, but it's a fun fantasy for us mere mortals, and the show is meant to entertain. I see these housewives as truly "desperate"-- for attention, for redemption after (what I strongly suspect in some cases to be) poor or abusive childhoods, for recognition from absent husbands, for a sense of community. It's interesting to note the pathos behind these women: Kim clearly self-medicates with wine (start keeping track of how often she has a drink in her hand, even sitting in her car!); Sheree is scared to death of losing her lifestyle in the divorce; Lisa is brittly trying to make up for her husband's failed career; Deshawn is in way over her head; NeNe is as terrified as a sixteen-year-old of not fitting in. I feel real compassion for these women. I might bury my sorrows in a pint of ice cream; they work out their pathologies through excessive spending. We're all just trying to make it through the night. Meanwhile, though--baller wives, read up on the number of professional athletes who wind up old, injured and broke. God bless you all. Please try to save some money. This mom is worried about your futures.

Maggie H. | Nov 11, 2008 5:25:19 AM | #

I think Kim used to be a man and can't sing for s*it even she cried when she heard her voice played back to her.
Shree is a gold digger and has a deformed masculine nose.
Deshawn has lock jaw and went to the souF of France
NeNe is the best. I wish her much happiness.
Lisa is a China woman wanna be 100% black woman but can't. the only reason is has a business is because of her rich and famous husband. If it were not for him she would be on a street coner shoting "me love you long time GI" which is probably how she was concived. Things come round full circle sometimes.

Jalliah | Nov 11, 2008 1:35:28 PM | #

People lets remeber that's this is just television. Im pretty sure that these women have money but I don't think they just ballin outta control. I think that the producers provide most of the spending sprees to make good tv. Lets be real , look at sheree' and her kids. She talks about how fabulous she is but her kids look a hot mess. Her son needs a haircut and she should do something with those braids on her daughter's head. If she really had money like that her kids would be just as fabulous as she is. And kim is just bigpoppa's mistress. No woman in their right mind is that stupid. Lisa is a very beautiful woman but Ed Hartwell is no Deion Sanders. He doesn't have that type of money. He's not a household name in the league that's why he been bounced around the nfl. So I think this show is not all as it seems

txboy84 | Nov 11, 2008 10:20:37 PM | #

well honestly i know that nene them have money because shes from athens and her sister does my hair. HATE ON HATERZ!!

tasha | Nov 11, 2008 11:32:51 PM | #

Wow, it's crazy how you guys are hating so bad on these women. If any of you had the chance to marry into money, I doubt many of you would reject them.

Chrissy | Nov 13, 2008 5:16:07 PM | #

people here are so gross, its embrassing. I'm brown american and I come from a very wealthy family and you guys need to stop judging the show. These are women who mostly want to be celebrities and love the camera so of course they are going to enterian and show off. Don't hate or be jealous because they worked hard or have a wealthy spouse. If you were hot or had the body and personality to either start your own business or marry rich you would be living the lifestyle too. I feel for celebrities because people are so rude and mean these days. Even tho people are judging these women by a couple episodes I would cry if I were them. I'm from Los Angeles & New York City and I love this show to represent that us African American are very successful and hot and educated and talented. Go Obama, and get use to it bitches !! And i know Kim personally and she is all american white so stop saying she's spanish Latin comminity because she's not at all (sorry that you don't have none to represent your group, this is not boring no personality Miami). Be open-minded american and enjoy TV and if you dont like something that could be just for entertain dont watch it or talk about it.
