The Zen Habits Reddit Community
About a week ago, I opened up a new community on Reddit, which has made its code open-source and now allows anyone to set up their own Reddit community. Those of you who follow me on Twitter were invited to join soon after.
Now I’m inviting you, all the readers of Zen Habits, to join and participate in the Zen Habits Reddit Community.
To anticipate some of your questions:
- What is it? Just like the regular Reddit community, it’s a way for people to share links, comment on them, and vote them up or down. The best links tend to make their way to the top, and users tend to vote down spam.
- How do I join? All you need is a regular Reddit account (it’s free and easy to set up). Then you can go to the Zen Habits Reddit community and subscribe (link to subscribe is on the right). Subscribing doesn’t send you emails or put anything in your RSS reader. It just means it’s a community you’re interested in participating in and submitting links to.
- What kind of articles should be submitted? I’m looking for articles and posts that are of interest to the readers of Zen Habits. That includes such topics as: productivity, simplicity, happiness, organization, health & fitness, personal finance, goals, habits, GTD, lifehacking, technology, family … and related topics. I’ll let you guys be the judge. HOWEVER: I am not looking for porn or sex stuff or spam of any kind. No Internet marketing stuff. You’ll be banned if you submit any of this.
- How do I submit? You can submit articles the same way you’d submit any Reddit articles. There’s the regular submit page, or you can use the Reddit bookmarklet, as I do. PLEASE NOTE: When you submit an article, you must choose “ZenHabits” from the subreddit pulldown menu in order for it to be a part of the Zen Habits Reddit community. This is important — if you forget to do that, it will be submitted to the regular Reddit community at large.
- Who will moderate? I’m the moderator right now. I’m willing to add other moderators … send me a message on Reddit after you participate for a few days. I’m a pretty lenient moderator. Just don’t submit spam or porn.
- Can I submit my own articles? Yes … if they’re related to the topics I listed above, and they’ll be of value to the Zen Habits readers. Please don’t submit spam. However, if you submit your own articles, please make sure they’re good. Don’t just submit anything, and don’t submit every post you write. The community will tire of you and vote you down after awhile, and that’s not good for anyone.
- What about voting and commenting? Please do it! Vote your favorite articles up and down. Comment on anything you like. Try to keep it civil, but I won’t moderate comments unless it’s spam or porn. This Zen Habits Reddit Community will only be as good as you make it — submit good stuff, vote the best links up and the bad links down, and make the comments come alive.
- I have a sneaky feeling this is another of your experiments. Actually, that’s not a question, but you’re right. It’s an experiment. If it goes well, and people find it useful, we’ll keep it going. If it fails, well, no harm.
- So why are you doing this? Basically, I share links on my tumblelog … but I’d like everyone to be able to share good links of interest to all Zen Habits readers. I’m not trying to replace other social media/bookmarking services … this is just an addition to the field. There aren’t too many sites that cover these topics in particular, so I hope this will be a valuable resource to many readers.
Let me know what you think of this idea in the comments!

Love how you are building community on your website through reddit and other ways. I am also trying to build community on my website by offering a prize ($20) to my top commentor. Have you ever thought about doing this?
I don’t have the traffic yet to build a community using reddit but my blog is steadily growing.
I love the link love, really great articles. Thanks for that input

I’m not going to subscribe.
I understand you are trying to increase the involvement of your fanbase, though. But I think you’re creating to much experiments.
For the sake of keeping it simple, I’ll just keep on reading your posts and skip the rest.

@Hugo: That’s totally cool. I was hoping this would serve as a resource for readers looking for other good articles on related topics, but I completely understand that it won’t be for everyone. :)

Sometime ago I read about “Open Sourcing Your Creativity” at Life Dev. I know that IM was used to exchange ideas. I was wondering how I could adapt a “open source”. The time zone differences are a huge challenge(if one is not based in us!). “The Zen Habits Reddit Community” sounds appealing and does solve the time zone problem as well.

I haven’t played with Reddit yet. Is the idea to have a pool of like minded people sharing their favorite articles in a simple way?
If so, then it sounds like a good experiment. There’s a lot to be said for reducing friction, carving out a niche, and teaming up with inspiring minds. I think you have a bunch of inspiring minds to work with so you have a great launch pad for success.

I think keeping it simple is key. By doing too many experiments and using to many things you lose your zen. So keeping it simple is awesome.
I tried to run a competition on my blog where I have about 10 different ways to enter. It was chaos and a waste of time.
Now I run a regular competition where if you are a ‘top commentor’ (frequent commentor) on my blog then you can win $50 a month. So simple. Only one way to enter.
It is kind of the same with you blog. I subscribe to RSS and read it from there and comment, but using reddit and twitter is too much information overload for me. Do you think I am crazy and should use them?

Just a question. I am just starting doing link love on my site and was wondering how you choose your articles.
Is there anything one can do to get chosen to be a part of your link love ;-)

I just wanted to make a comment about the last link, “7 Reasons Why The Gym Is Better Than Therapy”. It’s SO TRUE and I think it’s amazing how many people don’t realize the power of exercise and the fact that it is the ‘best medicine’ for so many things.
Reddit is new to me but something I will be looking into. Thanks for creating a unique way to do this.
Leo Says:

@JD Meir: Your description is exactly what I’m going for.
@Ryan: How do I choose articles to link to? Basically just ones that are full of information, valuable, and resonate with me. You can submit links to me via delicious … just tag it “for:zenhabits”.
However, I’m hoping this ZH Reddit Community is a better way to share links.

Leo,
You began this post with “While I bask in the glow of the RNC …” My suggestion to you, if you wish to increase your readership, is to refrain from comments about politics. Your comment could be interpreted either way, I realize; but I don’t think it added anything to the context of your post about your Reddit community.

I agree… stay away from political references (which I think has been totally avoided in the past on this blog, and admittedly it’s not easy to do right now).
I was shocked to see ‘RNC’. I am not going to judge Leo for that, but I admit that it will take a conscious effort for me not to do so.
I really did not want to know that!
Bud Says:

Gotta agree about the politics. I guess it should give me hope that there are still open-minded people who seem to buck the conservative clichés, who know the difference between introspection and egocentrism, but it doesn’t. After the last eight years, Republican or Democrat, what glow could there possibly be to bask in? I think someone was standing too close to the smoke.
Mike Says:
September 4th, 2008, 12:06 pm
@Tim: The ambiguous comment is highly relevant. In general, politics is the antithesis of meditation and Leo needs to hear from readers that his political beliefs have no place in this blog. In specifics, I won’t support this blog if Leo subscribes to the RNC platform, as it would be like taking vegetarian cooking advice from a cannibal.

Leo - I couldn’t get past the first line in your post today. I was so shocked that you made this political reference that I skipped the content and went right to the other readers’ reactions.
While I would vociferously defend your right to make political comments - even if I find them repugnant - I think that you are diluting the “zen habits” brand value and will loose loyal readers if these references continue. If you have a political agenda that you want to promote, why not relegate it to another blog site?

Like many others, I was stopped by the first line of Leo’s post. partly, I just didn’t expect a political reference in one of my favorite blogs. Partly, I’m in agreement with Mike; the RNC seems antithetical to the goals of this blog, and I’m questioning what I’ve been reading. Leo, I think you need to answer the question, in the interest of honesty and full disclosure. And then, please, never mention politics again!

Back to the original subject of the blog…
I agree with Hugo’s comment (way at the beginning), Leo. I love Zen Habits and have forwarded the link to many. Following twitter, reddit, etc just does not seem to follow the idea of simplifying life. The mere idea makes me dizzy. (easily done but still…)
Amna Says:
September 4th, 2008, 13:54 pm
The RNC comment hijacked my attention as well. What is the point of simplifying and single-tasking, if all the extra time and energy created is going to go to starting wars all over the world and drilling for oil in Alaska? While I have appreciated some of the content of this blog, I will have a hard time supporting it in the future.

So much thinking by so many who want to be free. Zen is not a thought.Zen is the stillness of mind, and peace of presance. If one thinks I will do this or I will do that, then the mind is not still. Then what you do is done of the ego’s sake or profit or because you need prase. To be free of thought that makes you who it wants you to be happy, sad, mad, mean you get the idea anyway? Whatwvever your sitution except it as it is in total no if’s and or but’s. Spend time in quiet everyday meditate for an hour. Be still and hear what stillness will say. Soon you will learn to put space inbetween your thinking this will be the times when you are preasent in you doing. What you are doing at that moment (meditating) is your interperpose the outcome is secendery.Do not spend time in the past it is over if you have done something yeaterday you regret forgive yourself go to the moment you are in now. You can’t live in the future cause it is still a moment away. The moment you are in now is truly the only moment you need be dealing with. Let the past be the past foregive who has wronged you no matter what they have done. This foregiving is not for them, and you need not go tell them you foregive them tell yourself, foregiving is for your good not theirs. I hope that this helps someone. It did wonders for me.

Hey Leo:
(1) I love the Reddit idea. You have a big enough following to pull this off. Great to have an alternative to Digg where there are -0- categories related to personal development.
(2) Please keep on making off the cuff comments like the RNC one. People need to get a sense of humor, and I for one am glad you showed you have one. I don’t care whether you vote Dem, Rep or Lib. But I love it when bloggers show they have a thought that doesn’t isn’t sanitized to appeal to the most people possible without offending anyone. :-)
So, pardon my utter ignorance, but do residents of Guam vote in the general election? I guess I should google it. Did Sarah Palin rock your world last night? Is your wife an Obama-mama? Or is Ron Paul your man? Or are you part of the 75% of Americans that, come election day, don’t give a rip?
Tim Says:
September 4th, 2008, 14:26 pm
@Kelly: I agree with you and Hugo - adding more information via ZH-twitter or ZH-reddit does not contribute to my Zen/simplify goals. I already take my twice daily input from ZenHabits (ZH) via RSS feed in order to keep it as simple as possible. Perhaps Leo’s intent with ZH-twitter and ZH-reddit is to increase and simplify input from his readership on articles and topics he will post to this blog. As he admits, it’s an experiment.
@dennis: Your point is spot on. I really think that Leo’s first line can be read any way you choose. In and of it’s own, it’s thought provoking - perhaps that was it’s only intent. We don’t know.
Let’s not throw Leo to the lions over one sentence. He has crafted a wonderful resource that has benefited us all for many moons. I’ve read it from the start; and this is the first time I’ve seen anything political. If I hear nothing more from Leo than, “Sorry for causing a rukus …”, I’ll be pleased. If his intent was a rukus, it’s his blog and we have free will to read or not.
@Mike: even a vegetarian can learn to cook tubers from a cannibal - the trick is to not be in the pot with the potatoes during the lesson.
Curious Says:

Hmmm … it seems I opened a big ol’ can of worms with the throwaway RNC joke. OK, message received … I’ll refrain from making political jokes from here on out. It was just a little hard to resist.
And yes, for those asking for clarification, I was joking. I’m not a member of any political party, but especially not the GOP. I’d describe myself as someone who is anti-corporate, an advocate of the poor and powerless, and more about freedom than anything else. In case you were wondering.
So anyway, don’t worry, I’m not advocating drilling or anything. And I won’t make any more commentary — it’s not welcome here. :)

Leo say anything you want about any subject that you want to. Don’t silence your voice by even one line just because a few people only want you to say what they want to hear. I find it bizarre that so many people feel they can tell you what you can and can not talk about on your own blog. I’m with Tim don’t throw Leo to the lions over one comment that no one here even knows what he meant by it. Frankly having such a knee jerk reaction to a random comment that you don’t even know what it means it not really very Zen (however you define it). Wither your republican or democrat why should I care not every republican is evil just like not every democrat is a bleeding heart liberal. I’ve enjoyed your blog all this time as have many others and your political affiliations didn’t matter before why should they matter now (even if you talk about them)? You seem like a good person to me no matter what side you vote for. Maybe if we quit drawing so many lines in the sand we could reach one another somewhere in the middle and maybe just maybe we could even learn something from one another.

@Tim I dunno, it seems like most blogs immediately skyrocket in traffic when they get political. Usually about half those new hits are people angry, but they are hits nevertheless.
At any rate, it seemed like a harmless statement to me and I didn’t really see anything political about it. Just a reference to a current event. Perhaps I’m being naïve….
@Leo Thanks for the links and the invite to reddit. Like a few other commenters, it’s a little too much for me… I get overloaded by info really easily…

Good morning all, it looks like many of you took the RMC comment personal. WHY? It is a thought only words was it the fact he backed the RMC? Or is because he didn’t back the DMC? The fact is we have the right and prev. to have our say about who is going to rep. for us and our country. I know neither party have much to offer for they are all working on some of the worlds largest EGO’S that can be found. Let’s face it one of them will lead our country so our job is to look past the ego’s and find the one who seem’s to have more passion to make changes that need to happen. If we sit by and let everyone else make the choise without putting our own in we can not say much about the job either does in office. You don’t have to be a party member vote your heart, and let others do the same.I really don’t think Leo did anything wrong if it all comes from his heart. Those of you who are unsubcribing because of his comment are hearing your own ego, and it is hungry for conflect of some kind. Don’t deed it.Leo does a great job here, and gives so much great info. For people who have felt adamantly opposed to what this past administration has done, their policies, etc. the opening line of Leo’s post was like a salt in wound. Even if it was a joke. Yes that is how bitter some of us feel toward our executive leaders. If the joke had been about the DNC, I would have expected some to feel equally put off…because we all have a right to an opinion. I have to say I am surprised that so many people (especially readers of this blog, with its emphasis on mindfulness) took an off-handed comment about the RNC so seriously that they were considering unsubscribing/not reading it again.
I find it disrespectful and insulting to Leo (even though he came out and stated his comments were a joke) that people are willing to cast aside a relationship (and yes, I believe that reading like blog like this one does create a relationship between author and reader) merely on the basis of differences in political philosophy.
I mean, if you’ve read Leo’s blog for a while, you would have gotten a sense of his character. After getting to know him, after valuing his advice and experiences, you would be willing to cast it aside because of his political philosophy. Even though you know the character of the man himself, a label, such as Republican would be enough impetus to cast him aside? How Zen is that?
I am a small business owner and I know how petty and small minded people can become when it comes to politics. I create relationships with my customers. Our whole purpose is to help them solve problems, to answer questions, and to create an atmosphere of learning and growth. So we get to know our customers well and likewise.
During the last election, my landlord placed a Bush/Cheney sign in front of our building. I can’t tell you how many customers (people we had established good relationships with) told us that they were considering not conducting business with us again because of it. It was disappointing and disheartening to see how willing people were to put aside the relationships we had built because they thought we disagreed with them.
Good people belong to all political persuasions. They do. It is self-defeating to look at someone and judge them because of what party they belong to. So the next time you learn someone you like and admire (a friend, an acquaintance, your hair dresser, or a blog author) holds different political beliefs, try not to cast them aside. Look at the entirety of your relationship with them and remember that good people can disagree.
Peace.

Re-read the first line:
While I bask in the glow of the RNC, I’ll leave you guys with some of my favorite links in the past week or so.
I still don’t get the joke….but it’s irrelevant now given how this discussion has evolved.
In the same way that Leo can speak say what he wants, so can readers. He understands and accepts/welcomes this otherwise he would not enable unmoderated comments. I respect that and for that reason I will not unsubscribe. There are thousands of non-political websites that have experienced this same issue.
Yes, there is a pseudo relationship here and each one has an opinion and each person has a right to express it knowing that not all with agree.
For some, politics is a highly-charged issue - it triggers emotions. For some it isn’t. Think about what would have happened if our ancestors didn’t have the emotional displeasure to break from England. Strong emotions are not necessarily a bad thing. What we do with those emotions is what matters.
Leo, thanks for letting us all share our viewpoints whether you agree or not. That is Zen (imo). There is much to learn from this experience.

First comment here and it’s in reference to the “RNC” kerfuffle….
I find that when something gets me in a reactionary mindset it is helpful to simply reflect on my reaction and let it be what it is without, well, reacting (this is very hard to do some times). The reaction, the emotions (so rich and thick) and perceptions are only in my mind anyway until I manifest them. The truth is I simply can’t reject them (the emotions) nor whatever it is that sets me off. If I do reject them, I reject a part of myself and that is not helpful to having a accepting view of the world as it is and loving view of myself or my world. This does not mean I don’t care. It simlpy means that I accept the world as it is and try not to create reactionary actions that further ripple away from me in ways that only add to the suffering.
In Lojong practice (a slogan practice in Buddhism intended to discipline your thinking) there many wonderful slogans. Among them there is one that seems to always come to mind for me: “Abandon all hope of fruition.” I guess to me that means that the world will never be “fixed”. And that’s okay. My hope is simply not to “break” it even more.

This is yet another gem you have chosen to share. Thank you for every idea you offer into the universe. Each effort is another way to connect with the world and to encourage the world to reconnect in their own ways.

An interesting way to create a community and find new articles. I dont’ think I’ve run across anyone else doing this on a blog. I read reddit a fair bit myself off the RSS feed. It’s pretty much a warehouse of ideas, so it’s smart to make good use of it.

Sorry Leo - I was having a crummy day and when I saw your opening line, it just made it go a little further south.
Of course you can say what you want, and vote as you’d like - and of course I fell for it when someone told me they took the word “gullible” out of the latest edition of Webster’s Dictionary…
Keep on rocking with the blog, Leo - and thanks for all the great insight and information that you’ve provided!
