Small-business accounting programs have advanced by light years since they were first introduced for the PC, but in the process, they've become too complex and burdened with sophistication that many very small proprietorships don't need. To address the problem, Intuit introduced QuickBooks Simple Start a few years ago. I took a look at the latest upgrade, and I found it impressive.

Bottom Line

Simple Start does what other small-business accounting programs have yet to do: It provides a terrific framework and tool set for very small businesses that need only basic money-management capabilities.

Pros

Well-conceived collection of tools and data for very small businesses. Understandable, utilitarian interface. Simple start-up, easy information entry. Supports merchant credit card accounts. Upgrades easily to QuickBooks. Google marketing tools.

Cons

Inelegant use of space on some screens. Contact records should show some financial info but don't. No online banking or bill-paying. No data-import abilities.
