Bush: Putin Is Just Covering Our Backs

(WASHINGTON) — President George Bush today agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Iran’s pursuit of nuclear technology is “ultimately aimed at a lasting peace.”Mr. Putin, visiting Tehran for talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, defended Iran’s right to “peaceful nuclear activities“.Mr. Bush said he agrees with his Russian counterpart that Mr. Ahmadinejad “has been secretly seeking peace for years, as he brought centrifuges on line to enrich plutonium.”“I think that Ahmadinejad envisions a peaceful future, ushered in by Iranian nuclear power,” said Mr. Bush, “He foresees a time of absolute calm in Israel, when even the crickets fall into reverent silence … a day when every hill and mountain shall be made low, and the rough places smooth as glass. I think he wishes to help the United States find that same kind of peace.”

Mr. Bush added that he can trust Mr. Putin’s eyewitness analysis of the situation in Tehran.

“As you know, I’ve looked into Putin’s soul,” said Mr. Bush, “and I know that he’s not influenced at all by the billion dollar unfinished nuclear reactor that the Russians are building for Iran, nor by the upcoming parliamentary elections in Russia when he hopes to make the transition from president to prime minister.”

“As the kids say,” Mr. Bush added, “Putin’s got our back.” — as reported by satirist Scott Ott / ScrappleFace

Today’s selected satire aside. There is little to feel good about with respect to the message that President Vladimir Putin is sending the U.S. administration. Latest polls in Russia indicate that Putin has a high popularity rating, with the Russian people, along with his party, United Russia. He no doubt brings a sense of nationalism with his the willingness to stand up to the U.S. which is now viewed around the world as reckless — and led by an unstable personality. I am sure it produces it’s fair share of anxiety in his country.

The fact remains however that despite appearances, there is little real trust between the two governments since it is widely suspected that Iranian fundamentalists have supported the Islamic radicals in Chechnya. So perhaps our best hope, until we have a new President regardless of party, is that Russia can mediate an agreement with Iran for full inspections of their facilities and give the U.S. a graceful way out of the standoff. In the end however, unless there is a change to the Islamic Fundamentalist authority and mentality that supports “wiping Israel off the map” which drives the current Iranian leadership, Israel may have to take matters in their own hands. Especially if progress is not made at the upcoming Middle Eastern Summit between Israel and Palestine with hopefully moderate Arab nations taking a lead in an effort to visibly support a peace process that recognizes BOTH Palestine AND Israel’s right to exist. The consequences of failure are very unsettling.
