<p>Because&#8230; aspartame! And formaldehyde! And all those other scary-sounding chemicals!</p>
<p><strong>Podcast note:</strong> Annika suggested a strong a causal link between consuming sugar and developing Type 2 diabetes. While there is a clear <em>correlation</em>, it is more correct to say that a high intake of <strong>calories</strong> of any type (fat, sugar or protein) has a <em>causal</em> relationship with Type 2 diabetes. This does not mean you can eat as much sugar as you like, because sugar is high is calories, but this is where the link between diabetes and sugar ends. SO while excessive sugar intake can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes, so can excessive intake of other any other high-in-calorie foods.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/myths/#sthash.ouOhB8if.dpuf">http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/myths/#sthash.ouOhB8if.dpuf</a></p>
<p>It is, however, true that a diet high in sugar can be dangerous to people who are already diabetic.</p>

<p>[<strong>episode note/correction</strong>: Rhinovirus and other viruses which cause the common cold do not use reverse transcription and genome integration to replicate &#8211; although many types of viruses do (such as HIV and retroviruses). Rhinovirus, on the other hand, hijacks the host cell&#8217;s own transcription machinery and uses this directly on its own RNA to make its viral proteins &#8211; no reverse transcription required.] <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/10PercentOfTheBrain"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="14" data-permalink="https://tenpercentofthebrain.wordpress.com/2015/02/05/episode-1-getting-cold-gives-you-a-cold/128px-feed-icon-svg/" data-orig-file="https://tenpercentofthebrain.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/128px-feed-icon-svg.png" data-orig-size="128,128" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="128px-Feed-icon.svg" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://tenpercentofthebrain.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/128px-feed-icon-svg.png?w=128" data-large-file="https://tenpercentofthebrain.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/128px-feed-icon-svg.png?w=128" class="alignleft wp-image-14" src="https://tenpercentofthebrain.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/128px-feed-icon-svg.png?w=50&#038;h=50" alt="128px-Feed-icon.svg" width="50" height="50" srcset="https://tenpercentofthebrain.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/128px-feed-icon-svg.png?w=50&amp;h=50 50w, https://tenpercentofthebrain.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/128px-feed-icon-svg.png?w=100&amp;h=100 100w" sizes="(max-width: 50px) 100vw, 50px" /></a></p>
