After extensive use—reading books, conducting deep AI research with Google Gemini, and testing the limits of its operating system—I have come to a resounding conclusion. This is an exceptional piece of hardware that brilliantly solves the problem of screen fatigue. But if you are hoping that buying an e-ink phone is the magic bullet to cure your doomscrolling habits, you are lying to yourself.

The Technical Divide: OLED Emissivity vs. E-Ink Reflection

During the notoriously long, dark Swedish winters, having this customizable illumination running constantly is essential, and it performs beautifully.

Interestingly, this device handles dark mode reading better than almost any other e-ink panel on the market. However, under harsh studio lighting or direct sunlight, dark mode can actually introduce distracting reflections on the screen's surface. The Software Reality: A Smartphone in Disguise

There is a pervasive myth in the tech community that purchasing an e-ink device is the ultimate cure for smartphone addiction. The logic suggests that a slower, less vibrant screen will inherently discourage mindless scrolling. The Bigme HiBreak Pro Color shatters this illusion.

This is not a restricted, locked-down e-reader; it is an uncompromised Android smartphone. The internal processing power and the display's refresh technology are surprisingly robust, capable of pushing refresh rates up to roughly 47 frames per second. It even handles YouTube videos capably at 30fps. While it technically works flawlessly, the washed-out colors of the e-ink display make it a less-than-ideal cinematic experience. But the fact that it can stream video smoothly proves just how powerful the underlying hardware truly is.

Living with a secondary smartphone introduces logistical challenges, particularly regarding cellular connectivity. In Sweden, adding a secondary SIM card to an existing mobile plan can incur a premium of around 200 Swedish Kronor per month. For a companion device, that recurring cost is difficult to justify.

Why the iPhone Air Stays in the Pocket

With all its capabilities—from mobile banking to Google searches—one might assume the HiBreak Pro Color could serve as a standalone daily driver. Yet, it remains a dedicated companion device. It will not replace a primary flagship phone like the iPhone Air.

The limitations are highly specific but uncompromising:

Ecosystem Lock-in: For those invested in wearables, the inability to sync an Apple Watch Ultra—arguably the best Apple product released since the original AirPods—is an immediate dealbreaker.
Camera Quality: While the Bigme's rear sensor is adequate for scanning documents and capturing purely functional images (a task somewhat improved by using third-party software like Open Camera), the physical constraints of previewing photos on an e-ink display make serious photography impossible. The iPhone Air's camera superiority remains essential.
Communication Friction: Abandoning iMessage for alternatives like Google Messages remains a significant barrier, especially when notifications are seamlessly routed through an Apple Watch.

We are currently living through a golden age of weird, wonderful, and highly specialized e-ink devices. For years, the market was entirely dominated by utilitarian, locked-down slabs designed solely to trap you within a specific corporate bookstore ecosystem. But the pendulum is swinging back toward hardware freedom. The rise of the micro e-reader—devices small enough to live on the back of your smartphone—has fundamentally shifted how we think about digital consumption.

When the XTEINK X4 hit the scene, it was a revelation. It proved that an e-reader didn't need to be a tablet replacement; it could be an ultra-lightweight, magnetically attached companion. Now, the company has released its little brother: the XTEINK X3. And this time around, it comes in a breathtakingly stealthy Space Black finish.

The promise of the X3 is tantalizing: an even more compact form factor, physical buttons, and a screen that begs to be tinkered with. The real question for any enthusiast device is whether we can break down its software walls. Can the X3 be flashed to run open-source firmware? Let’s dive into the hardware, the initial setup, and the high-level technical architecture of liberating this tiny machine.

The Hardware: Stealth Aesthetics Meet Extreme Minimalism

Taking the Space Black XTEINK X3 out of its minimalist cardboard packaging, the first thing that strikes you is the sheer impossibility of its footprint. Weighing in at an almost non-existent 58 grams and measuring just 5.2 millimeters thick, it legitimately feels more like a heavy-duty credit card than a piece of consumer electronics.

The Space Black aesthetic is a massive upgrade over the standard off-white or gray plastics we usually see in this category. It gives the device a sleek, monolithic look where the dark bezels melt seamlessly into the 3.7-inch e-ink display when the screen is refreshed to a dark mode or displaying a standby image.

Despite its diminutive size, the X3 does not compromise on physical interaction. It features highly tactile physical page-turn buttons, a feature that purists rightly demand. Booting Up: The Stock Experience

Pressing the power button for the first time initiates the familiar, slow-motion cascade of e-ink particles aligning to form the boot logo. The initial start-up of the XTEINK X3 is snappy, a testament to the efficient microcontroller humming beneath the screen.

The stock operating system is perfectly functional for a casual user. It allows you to load EPUBs, adjust basic typographic settings, and navigate a simple library interface. The text is crisp, and the contrast on the 3.7-inch panel is genuinely excellent, offering deep blacks and a highly reflective white background that makes reading in direct sunlight a joy.

However, the stock firmware is a walled garden. It dictates how you manage your library, how the screen refreshes, and what secondary applications you can run. For the average consumer, this plug-and-play simplicity is a feature. But for power users, hardware tinkerers, and open-source advocates, a locked bootloader and proprietary software are merely obstacles waiting to be bypassed.

The Deep Dive: The Architecture of Liberation

This brings us to the most crucial part of the unboxing experience: checking if the X3 can be flashed. To understand why flashing an e-reader is such a game-changer, we have to look at the underlying technical architecture of the XTEINK ecosystem.

Enter the CrossPoint Reader project (and its popular forks like CrossInk). CrossPoint is an open-source firmware built specifically for these ESP32 e-paper displays. By flashing the XTEINK X3 with CrossPoint, you strip away the proprietary UI and replace it with an incredibly fast, highly customizable reader.

From a technical standpoint, installing custom firmware on an e-ink display involves mastering memory management and display refresh Look-Up Tables (LUTs). E-ink displays are notoriously difficult to drive efficiently because the screen retains its image without power. Changing the screen requires applying precise voltage pulses to move positively and negatively charged ink microcapsules. The stock firmware uses conservative LUTs to ensure a clean refresh, which can make the device feel slow. Custom firmware like CrossPoint optimizes these voltage waveforms, allowing for localized, partial screen refreshes that drastically increase page-turn speeds while minimizing ghosting (the faint remnants of previous text).

Furthermore, flashing a custom firmware unlocks advanced typographic engines. You gain the ability to sideload custom TTF/OTF fonts, implement complex formatting rules, and even utilize experimental reading methods like Bionic Reading—which bolds the first few letters of words to artificially guide your eyes across the text at a higher velocity. It also opens the door to localized network synchronization, allowing you to bypass cloud servers entirely and sync your reading progress using tools like KoReader via a local Calibre server.

Flashing the X3: Escaping the Walled Garden

So, is the Space Black XTEINK X3 locked down? I am thrilled to report that it is not.

Connecting the device via its USB-C port to my computer, I was able to interface with the ESP32’s bootloader directly. The flashing process on these devices relies on serial communication. By putting the microcontroller into a specific boot mode, you can utilize the Web Serial API—often through browser-based flashing tools like EinkHub—to write compiled binary files (.bin) directly to the device's flash memory.

The process involves flashing several distinct partitions: the bootloader itself, the partition table (which tells the microcontroller where the OS and user data live), and the actual application firmware. Because the X3 is relatively new compared to the X4, you have to ensure you are pulling the correct firmware fork from GitHub that specifically includes the hardware definitions for the X3's slightly smaller screen and button matrix.

Watching the terminal output as the custom firmware overwrites the stock OS is an incredibly satisfying experience. It is the digital equivalent of claiming ownership over the hardware you purchased. Upon reboot, the X3 no longer greets you with the XTEINK proprietary ecosystem. Instead, it boots directly into a clean, minimalist, open-source library manager. The page turns feel snappier, the font rendering is sharper, and the device transforms from a simple e-reader into a custom-tailored, distraction-free reading terminal.

The Verdict on the Space Black X3

The XTEINK X3 is a triumph of industrial design. By trimming away the fat and leaving only the absolute essentials—a beautiful 3.7-inch screen, a lightweight battery, and tactile buttons—they have created a device that effortlessly integrates into daily life. The Space Black colorway elevates it from a mere gadget to a premium-feeling everyday carry item.

However, the true value of the X3 lies not just in its hardware, but in its potential. The fact that the bootloader remains unlocked, allowing users to flash sophisticated, community-driven firmware like CrossInk, turns this tiny device into the ultimate pocket-sized canvas. On the other side sits the E-Ink camp—champions of battery life and eye comfort, but perpetually held back by sluggish refresh rates, ghosting artifacts, and muted, washed-out color gamuts.

Enter the Huion Note E. Launched on May 20, 2026, in Los Angeles, this 8.4-inch digital notebook represents a dramatic pivot for a company historically known for its professional drawing tablets. Priced at a highly competitive $349, the Note E asks a provocative question: What if you didn’t need an electrophoretic E-Ink screen to achieve a distraction-free, paper-like writing experience?

By trading the traditional E-Ink display for a highly specialized, 60Hz soft-light color panel layered with advanced physical etching, Huion has built a bridge between the fluid power of a modern Android tablet and the cognitive sanctuary of a paper notebook. It is a device aimed squarely at business professionals, project managers, and creatives who want the tactility of paper without sacrificing the speed of modern silicon.

Breaking the Electrophoretic Orthodoxy

The most striking feature of the Huion Note E is what it isn't. It is not an E-Ink device. In this tutorial I show you how to connect to your XTEINK X4 and X3 wirelessly to your smartphone or computer to change settings or transfer files and books. This works with Crosspoint firmware or any fork of it like CrossInk for example.

How to Wirelessly Connect and Transfer Books to Your XTEINK X4
If you are an avid reader who loves diving into e-books on a dedicated e-reader, knowing how to efficiently manage your digital library is essential. Managing physical cables to transfer EPUBs or PDFs can be a hassle, but thankfully, the XTEINK X4—running CrossPoint or a fork like CrossInk—offers powerful built-in wireless file transfer options.

In this tutorial, we will explore two distinct methods for wirelessly connecting a computer or smartphone directly to your XTEINK X4: Joining a Local Network and Creating a Hotspot.
Method 1: Join a Network (Local Area Network Transfer)
The first and generally easiest method assumes that both your XTEINK X4 and your transferring device are connected to the same local Wi-Fi network.
How it works technically: When you select this option, your e-reader initializes a lightweight HTTP web server on your Local Area Network (LAN). It opens a specific port, allowing other devices on the same subnet to resolve its local IP address or mDNS (Multicast DNS) hostname. This allows you to interact with the device’s file system remotely via a standard web interface, bypassing the need for dedicated file-transfer protocols like FTP.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

On your XTEINK X4, navigate to the File Transfer menu and select Join a Network.
The device will generate a server address and display a QR code.
Grab your mobile device, such as an iPhone Air, and open the camera app. Point it at the screen to scan the QR code.
Alternatively, you can manually type the provided numerical IP address into any web browser on your computer or phone, or use the convenient local hostname address: crosspoint.local.
Select "Open," and the Cross Sync web interface will load seamlessly in your browser.

From this web interface, you gain full administrative control over your e-reader. You can open the Settings panel to adjust and save system preferences, or navigate to the File Manager. Inside the File Manager, you will see your current reading library and folders.

To add a new book:

Tap Upload, then select Choose Files.
You can browse directly through your device's internal file manager or choose a cloud provider like Google Drive.
Locate your book file, select it, and click upload.

Using this localized upload method is highly recommended for binary file KOReader syncing. By transferring the exact binary file structure rather than relying purely on superficial file name syncing, you ensure that the cryptographic hashes of your e-books match perfectly across devices. This guarantees that advanced metadata, reading progress, and annotations sync flawlessly.

Once you are done transferring, simply tap Exit on the e-reader to safely terminate the web server.

Method 2: Create a Hotspot (Ad-Hoc Wi-Fi Network)
What if you are completely off the grid? The second option, Create Hotspot, is the perfect solution for when you are out in the woods or traveling without access to a traditional Wi-Fi router.
How it works technically: Selecting this option turns the e-reader’s network interface card (NIC) into a Software-Enabled Access Point (Soft AP). It establishes its own localized ad-hoc Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). This creates a direct, peer-to-peer (P2P) connection between the e-reader and your phone or computer. Because the routing is handled entirely locally between the two devices, absolutely no external internet connection or cellular data is required.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

On the XTEINK X4, select Create Hotspot.
The screen will display two separate QR codes.
Scan the first QR code with your phone. This code contains the SSID and cryptographic handshake credentials required to authenticate and connect your phone directly to the e-reader's newly broadcasted Wi-Fi network.
Once your phone confirms it has connected to that specific Wi-Fi network, scan the second QR code.
This will immediately open the file manager interface in your web browser, identical to the one used in Method 1.

From here, the process is exactly the same: you can upload new reading material, delete finished books, or adjust settings completely offline. It is an incredibly nifty feature that guarantees you can always sideload your next great read, regardless of internet availability.
When you are finished, tap Exit on the XTEINK X4 to shut down the hotspot and disconnect the local ad-hoc network.

However, when we do look at a screen, standard typography often acts as a bottleneck for our natural processing speeds.

Enter Bionic Reading and the Guide Dots method: two algorithmic text-formatting techniques designed to hack the visual cortex, reduce ocular fatigue, and dramatically accelerate reading comprehension. For those running the CrossPoint firmware on the Xteink X4, moving away from physical cables is a significant step toward a more refined reading experience. The ecosystem offers two primary methods for wireless library synchronization, each utilizing specific network protocols to ensure your digital collection is always within reach.

Technical Infrastructure: Discovery and Transport

To manage a library effectively, it is beneficial to understand the underlying mechanics of these wireless transfers:

The Wireless Device Plugin (WebSocket & UDP): This method utilizes a specialized Calibre driver that acts as a bridge. It uses UDP (User Datagram Protocol) broadcasts to auto-discover the hardware on your local network. Once the "handshake" is complete, files are uploaded via WebSockets, a protocol providing full-duplex communication for stable data transfer directly to the device's internal storage.
OPDS (Open Publication Distribution System): This is a standardized syndication format based on HTTP. By enabling Calibre’s Content Server, the library is exposed as a feed that the device can parse. This allows a person to browse and download books directly from the reader's interface without interacting with the computer.

Method 1: The CrossPoint Calibre Plugin

On the Device: Navigate to the File Transfer screen and select Connect to Calibre.
Network Sync: Ensure both the computer and the reader are on the same WiFi network.

Known Constraint: Currently, this method may result in metadata limitations where the author is occasionally listed as "unknown" in the file browser.

Method 2: OPDS Library Browsing

If a person prefers to browse their entire library without touching their computer, the OPDS method is the superior choice.

1. Server Setup

Enable Sharing: In Calibre, go to Preferences > Sharing over the net and start the Content Server.
Authentication: If a password is required, Calibre must be set to use Basic Authentication. The firmware does not currently support the default Digest authentication used by some servers.

2. Device Integration

Define the Endpoint: Navigate to Settings > System > OPDS Browser > OPDS Server URL.
Format: The address must follow the pattern http://[Your-IP]:[Port]/opds. For example: http://192.168.1.123:8080/opds.
Navigation: Return to the main menu and select OPDS Browser to browse and download your collection.

Optimization and Troubleshooting

To maintain peak performance and ensure a smooth experience, consider the following technical nuances:

Cover Rendering: Large, high-resolution embedded covers can take several seconds to convert for the Home Screen thumbnail. It is highly efficient to optimize EPUBs by resizing covers to roughly 480x800 pixels before transfer.
Storage Reporting: If Calibre triggers a "no memory left" warning despite available space, check the plugin settings to toggle the ignore free space option.

My BigMe B7 is back from the dead again so now I can sync it with my XTEINK X4

My Bigme B7 went into a bootloop with no return I thought so I decided to pack it away because it was faulty. Apparently I was wrong. After being without charge for a couple of months I decided to check it again and when I charged it and it started then a Firmware/software update popup showed up and I click update and now it works again! So I immediately set it up to sync with my beloved XTEINK X4 and my iPhone Air, using KOReader sync in the excellent Crosspoint Reader ++ Fork and Readest.

If you’ve been tinkering with your e-ink setup and wishing for a more seamless way to manage your reading across different devices, the new unofficial v1.1.1-bookfusion fork by vbbot is the game-changer you’ve been waiting for. Based on the rock-solid CrossPoint v1.1.1 stable release, this build integrates BookFusion directly into the hardware, allowing you to browse your cloud library and sync your progress without ever touching a USB cable.

Core Feature Overview

This release isn't just a minor patch; it’s a significant workflow improvement for e-ink enthusiasts who live in the cloud. Here’s what makes this fork a must-have:

Browsing and Downloading EPUBs The built-in library browser means you can expand your reading list on the fly. To access it, head to Settings → BookFusion Sync → Browse Library.

To keep the interface snappy on e-ink hardware, the browser displays your collection 8 books at a time. You can navigate through your pages using the physical or on-screen up/down buttons. When you find a title you want, select it and confirm the download.

Note on Storage: All downloads are saved directly to the root of the SD card. Ensure you have a formatted SD card inserted in your Crosspoint Reader before starting a download. A progress bar will track the transfer, and once it's finished, the book is immediately ready for reading and syncing.

Mastering the Sync Workflow

The magic happens once you open an EPUB downloaded via the BookFusion browser. While you are actively reading, you can press the sync button to trigger a manual check-in with the cloud.

The device will fetch your remote reading position and present a side-by-side comparison screen. This screen shows your Chapter and Percentage for both your local device and the remote cloud. You then have two choices:

Apply Remote Position: Jump ahead (or back) to the exact spot you reached on another device.
Upload Local Position: Push your current Crosspoint progress to the BookFusion cloud so your other devices stay updated.

If you are opening a book for the first time and no remote progress is found, the system will intelligently prompt you to upload your current position to establish a baseline.

Because KOReader works identically across Kindle, Kobo, Android, and Pocketbook, you can master these tools once and enjoy a metadata-rich, "cover-first" experience on any device.

By moving beyond a file-based view and utilizing Collections and Series, you transform your e-reader from a storage drive into a curated gallery.

The Foundation: Using the "Favorites" Collection

The "Favorites" collection is a built-in feature available to every user by default. It is the quickest way to prioritize your current "TBR" (To Be Read) pile. You can identify Favorites by the Heart icon in the interface.

To add a book to your Favorites, use the "Long-press" method within the File Browser:

Navigate to a book title.
Long-press the title to open the context menu.

Open the File search or Collection search function.

- Note: Searching "Content" is incredibly thorough but is significantly slower than title/author searches. Manage your expectations on older e-ink hardware!

A "Series" is distinct from a general collection because order matters. KOReader identifies Series Name and Series Index metadata, which is typically imported automatically if you manage your library with Calibre.

If your metadata is messy or missing, you can fix it directly on your device:

Long-press a book and select Book information.
Long-press the Series title or Series index fields to select Set custom.
While you are in the Book Information screen, you can also edit Ratings and Keywords to further enrich your library’s searchability.

Once your metadata is corrected, enter the collection and use the Arrange menu to sort by Series. This ensures your books appear in their proper chronological or numerical order rather than a random alphabetical list.

Managing and Sorting Your Collections

You can manage your organizational structure by long-pressing any collection name within the Collections view.

Custom Startup: Don't waste time in folders. Set KOReader to start on your Favorites or History screen. Navigate to Top Menu > Settings (Gear icon) > File browser > Start with.
Gestures: Use the Gesture Manager to assign a specific motion to open your Favorites or Collections view. For example, a "Multi-swipe" (like drawing a 'U' shape on the screen: Down-Right-Up) can be set to toggle your Favorites list instantly without leaving your current book.
