How Many Sweepstakes Do You Enter Daily?

One of the most common questions I get about sweepstakes is how many sweepstakes should be entered every day. For example, I received an email from Steve in Lake Villa, IL who was counting up how many sweepstakes he enters every day and started wondering how many sweepstakes other About.com Contests readers enter.

So I thought I'd put the question to you: fill out my easy poll to share about how many sweepstakes you enter daily.

Personally, I aim to enter around 50 sweepstakes daily. When I have some extra time, I get up to 75 to 100 sweepstakes.

Entering daily is an important part of winning regularly. It doesn't have to take long -- even 15 minutes a day can give you enough time to enter a bunch of valuable sweepstakes. If you have trouble fitting sweepstakes into your day, check out How to Find Time to Enter Sweepstakes.

Having a sweepstakes strategy can help you maximize your entry time. Here is an example of a simple way to keep up with sweepstakes entries.

If you're limited on time, it's also important to be as quick as possible when entering. Here are some tips on faster sweepstakes entry that can help you raise the number of sweepstakes that you enter daily.

If you'd like to win more, make it a goal to raise the number of sweepstakes you enter every day, even if it's only a few extra entries a day. Every entry that you submit is a new chance to win fantastic prizes!

You Don't Have to Spend All Your Time Sweeping to Be a Winner

One of the common myths about sweepstakes entry is that you have to spend all of your time filling out entry forms to be a winner. While it's true that the more you'll enter, the more you'll win, you can fit sweepstakes into any schedule. Take, for example, Debra, who emailed me with news of her fantastic win:

I wanted to let you know I began coming to your site at the end of February. I would allot about fifteen minutes each morning to enter contests with prizes I liked. About a month ago, I received a phone call notifying me I had won the Starbucks Earthwatch contest. I was speechless.
I'll be traveling to Costa Rica for 2 weeks to work with Earthwatch researchers and local farmers to find a more earth-sustainable way of growing coffee beans; to stop further demolition of rain forest. Should You Quit Your Job to Enter Sweepstakes?

If you look at some of the prizes being awarded in big sweepstakes, such as new cars, dream homes, and heaps of cash, it's natural to wonder if sweepstaking couldn't become a full-time job. Most of us would rather sit at home filling out entry forms than to answer to an unreasonable boss, fight the traffic in a long commute, wrangle our way through the jungle of office politics, or deal with many of the other hassles and heartbreaks of regular jobs.

As tempting as the idea may be, however, I can't really recommend quitting the day job and entering sweepstakes full-time. Why? Find out in my new sweepstakes FAQ, Can I Make a Living Entering Sweepstakes?

I do, however, recommend taking a professional attitude toward sweepstakes by creating a sweepstakes strategy, downloading Roboform, and maximizing your chances of winning. Even if you can't quit your day job for sweepstakes, you can save yourself tons of money, indulge in luxuries that you would never buy yourself, and open up doors to VIP experiences that are otherwise out of reach. Having reasonable expectations will keep your sweepstakes entry fun and exciting, instead of making it become a chore.

11 Free Email Services Worth Recommending from About.com's Email Expert

In order to keep your regular email address sleek and to make it easier to differentiate between a legitimate sweepstakes win and a scam, I highly recommend setting up a separate email address to use just for sweepstakes entry.

You can log into your email from any computer, and check for winning emails from home, from work, or while you're traveling. If your sweepstakes email gets too full of spam and marketing emails over time, you can simply switch to another address with no hassle and at no cost.

To Unsubscribe Or Not to Unsubscribe from Sweepstakes Emails -- That Is the Question!

One of my readers, Blackie raised an interesting point in a comment to my Make Sure to Check Your Email post. I recommended that you open mails that you receive at the email address that you use to enter sweepstakes to ensure that you don't miss a win notification, and to unsubscribe from the mails you don't want to receive. Blackie replied:

Sorry to disagree with you but with the mountains of illegal/criminal spam emails flooding the Internet, there must be better advice than to open all emails whether you recognize them or not. By opening the bad ones, you're just letting the spam gangsters know that there's a live prospect on your end. You can then expect your spam numbers to increase daily.

My response got to be a little bit long for a comment, so I decided to make it into a separate blog post. I am sure that there were a lot of you who were thinking the same thing when you read my post!

While I think Blackie raises an excellent point, I stick to my statement. If you have an email address that you only use to enter sweepstakes (and you should!), then I highly recommend unsubscribing from the emails that you do not want to keep receiving. I have a sweepstakes email address that I have treated like this for years now, and I receive four or five emails a day - and those include entry confirmations.

Furthermore, I think the risk-to-benefit calculation is highly in favor of checking all of the emails in your sweepstakes email address. The cost is that you might have some bad luck and increase the number of spam mails you get until it is unmanageable. At which point, you can phase out the old email address and start using a fresh email address for your sweepstakes entries. The benefit is that you won't overlook sweepstakes wins, which can include big prizes. I won over $1,000 in toys from Toys R Us with an email that landed in my spam filter. I was notified over a year after the close of the sweepstake, so I wonder if the delay was caused by a lot of other people overlooking the notification, too!

I should also add that you should not open any attachments in your email unless you have verified that it is a legitimate win notification, and that you should take steps to protect your computer from viruses on general principles.

Have You Won Prizes from Twitter Parties?

I've heard a lot of buzz about Twitter parties, so I decided it was time to look into them. I tried one hosted by Hotels.com yesterday, and it was actually a lot of fun. The prizes up for grabs were free hotel stays and spa gift cards, two things I absolutely LOVE.

The Twitter party worked like this: Hotels.com asked various travel-related questions, and people Tweeted with a specific hashtag to answer them. Each correctly-formulated answer was an entry into the giveaway. The winners will be notified next week.

I enjoyed the format, and the questions were fun to answer. It was interesting to read the other participants' responses as well.

PCH's Million-Dollar Sweepstakes Winner Was About to Lose Her Home

The winner of Publishers Clearing House's SuperPrize Sweepstakes for April 30, 2014 was Penny Pompa of Monroe, CT. Ms. Pompa, who was in danger of losing her house before the PCH Prize Patrol arrives, said that she had prayed to God to help her before going to bed the night before. "This is truly a miracle!" Penny cried.

What Types of Sweepstakes Do You Like to Enter Most?

There have been so many changes in the sweepstakes industry since I've started writing about sweepstakes just a few years ago. Now, there are a dizzying array of ways to enter and win prizes.

To keep you up-to-date (and maybe encourage you to try something new!), I've updated my Guide to the Different Types of Sweepstakes to Enter.

My own favorite type of sweepstakes to enter are the instants. I love the thrill of seeing a winning message pop up right away, and the excitement of finding out what the prize is. What a fun way to kick off a morning or to end a long and stressful day!

Would You Fall for a Fake Facebook Page Scam?

A new type of sweepstakes scam is in the news right now. KSAT News has covered the story of Juanita Molinar, who was the victim of a con by people pretending to be from HGTV's series, Property Brothers.

Luckily, Juanita Molinar was savvy enough to notice that she was being scammed fairly quickly, and didn't lose any money. But I wouldn't be very happy with even giving my cell number to criminals who are trying to scam me.

To help all of you steer clear of these types of scams, I've written a new article: How to Avoid Fake Facebook Page Scams. It gives you tips on how to recognize and avoid look-alike Facebook pages masquerading as those belonging to legitimate companies and well-known people.

$400 Million Mega Millions Jackpot (the 3rd Largest in History!) Awarded

The Mega Millions Lottery jackpot has been soaring recently.

85-Year-Old Man Wins a Car from Ford's Gas and Go Further Sweepstakes

I receive a lot of questions from people who wonder if they will be passed over for prizes because of their age. Many wonder whether sponsors might not want a younger target audience to receive my prizes. I've never believed that sweepstakes discriminate against the elderly, and here's a winning story that demonstrates my point...

According to a PRWeb press report, the winner of Ford's Gas and Go Further Sweepstakes, which ended on January 3, 2014, was an 85-year-old man from Gainesville, FL. Albert Traversa's name was chosen from among about 91,000 entries.

As his prize, Albert Traversa received $30,000 to put toward one of five models of fuel-efficient Ford vehicles. Mr. Traversa chose the Ford C-MAX Hybrid.

Albert Traversa's response to winning was:

"...When we received a call that I had won $30,000 towards the price of a new Ford, I thought, 'Is this for real?' Well, it was. My wife and I did some research on the cars available and chose a Ford C-MAX Hybrid... This has been a special experience for us and we want to thank Ford for providing this opportunity at this time in our lives."

NPR's "On the Media" Covers the Sweepstakes Hobby and the HGTV Dream Home Sweepstakes

I was recently interviewed by associate producer Laura Mayer from NPR's "On the Media," who was covering the sweepstakes hobby from the perspective of an interesting way to earn money and more from home. Laura became interested in how to use sweepstakes to earn money and other prizes from home when a friend of hers took it up after losing her job. One Lucky Person in California Just Became $425 Million Richer

According to a CNN article, a store in California has reported selling a winning Powerball ticket. The winner hasn't stepped forward yet, but when he or she does, they'll be able to turn that ticket in for a massive $425 million prize! There was only one winning ticket sold, so the winner won't have to split the jackpot.

The lucky winner beat odds of 175 million to one to match all six numbers including the Powerball to take home the jackpot.

Think it might be you? If you bought a ticket at Dixon Landing Chevron gas station in Milpitas, California, be sure to check your numbers. The winning numbers were 1, 17, 35, 49, 54 and 34 for the Powerball.
