Super Bowl — Tampa, Florida

One of the most watched annual sporting events in the world. It all comes down to Super Bowl LV, the 55th annual showdown between the best of the best in the NFL. Despite how strange the last year was, some things never change—and the Super Bowl is one constant. The Super Bowl is an event football fans as well non-football fans look forward to all year long. This year it is in our neighborhood. After nearly two decades, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made it back to the Super Bowl.

Oh how I would love to get my hands on some reasonably priced tickets and gift them to some fans I know would love to be among those attending the Super Bowl in person. To clarify, the tickets would be for my husband and our son. They would be over the moon to make the easy drive from Anna Maria Island to Tampa and take their seats at the Raymond James Stadium. I am happy to stay home, rooting for the Bucs from the comfort of the couch. I will watch a little of the game and anxiously wait for the start of the half time show. How lucky or wealthy are those Super Bowl ticket holders? I ask this because I know that it’s not easy to get a ticket and the tickets are remarkably expensive, reaching into the thousands of dollars. When I checked NFL On Location earlier today there are tickets available prices ranging from $5312.50 to $15300.00 per ticket. A little above my budget so no, I didn’t buy any. The value of the ticket price to attend Super Bowl 55 is certainly subjective. If you don’t get tickets to attend and your team wins you are still happy but, paying that large sum and your team loses? Not just the loss, but with that money you could have easily purchased a beautiful new 75” flat screen television instead…ouch that hurts!

While you pick your seat for the big game, enjoy these interesting Super Bowl LV facts…

— The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face off against the 2020 Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs. This is the first time these two teams have squared off in the Super Bowl.

— The game will be played Sunday, February 7 with kick-off at 3:30 pm PT 6:30 pm ET

— Super Bowl 55 will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

— This will be the fifth time Tampa has hosted the Super Bowl and the third at Raymond James Stadium.

— The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be the first team in NFL history to play a Super Bowl at their own stadium.

— There is always a first, but so far, no team has ever won the Super Bowl in their home stadium.

— Buccaneers quarterback 43 year old Tom Brady will make his 10th Super Bowl appearance, which is an NFL record. This will be his first outside of New England, where he spent the first 20 seasons of his career with the Patriots.

— Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who won Super Bowl MVP in the Chiefs’ last title, is looking to become the youngest QB in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowls. He won in 2019 at age 24 and is looking to do it again at 25.

— Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman will recite her latest work ahead of the coin toss.

— Marine veteran James Martin will kick off the game with a coin toss.

— Carl Cheffers will referee the game as part of a crew featuring Sarah Thomas, who will become the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl.

— Three-time Grammy Award-winning artist The Weeknd will perform at the halftime show. You can expect his halftime show to start around 8 pm ET.

— Super Bowl LV will be televised on CBS. NBC was originally scheduled to broadcast the 2021 game and CBS had the 2022 Super Bowl, the networks swapped years so the NBC would have both the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics in 2022.

— Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Super Bowl LV will be the lowest-attended Super Bowl ever. Attendance has been capped at about 22,000. That number includes 7,500 vaccinated health care workers that will attend the game on an all-expense paid trip. The stadium will be about a third full.

So where will you be sitting to watch the Super Bowl? We will be staying home and are looking forward to a great take-out feast from one of our favourite local restaurants. We have already pre-ordered so when game day arrives we aren’t scrambling to get our order together, we just have to pick-up.

Celebrations will look a lot different this year because of COVID-19, but there are safe ways to cheer on your team while you enjoy your favourite foods. For those watching the game in our Anna Maria Island area, there are many restaurant dining options with outdoor space.

Takeout is also a great option to consider and it is always nice to support the local restaurants.

Whether you’ve visited us before or it is your first time on Anna Maria Island there is plenty of activity waiting to welcome you.

One of our favourites is a visit to the Beach Market at Coquina Beach. The Beach Market is a free, family friendly, seasonal market located a short walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals Inc. A perfect place to shop outdoors, especially this year as we avoid crowded indoor shopping space. Also, this is a great way to support local businesses while learning where they are from and how they make what they sell.

At the Coquina Beach Market you will find a variety of quality artisans and vendors selling home baked goods, a colourful array of fresh local produce, hand crafted clothing, antiques, and unique original artwork everywhere you look. With so many unique items you’re sure to find something that will thrill those on your Christmas list.

Imagine telling your friends and family you walked along a pathway covered with tall pine canopies looking out at the beautiful turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico to buy their Christmas gift. They might not believe you, until…you show them your pictures!

The Beach Market at Coquina Beach is open for the 2020/2021 season —

The event is located at 2650 Gulf Drive South, Bradenton Beach.

As you stroll the market you can enjoy listening to the AMI String Band as they perform live from 10:30-2:30. And, if shopping in the Florida fresh air makes you hungry the Coquina Cafe is open serving good food and drinks.

For everyones safety the vendors are social distancing, wearing masks and have hand sanitizer and wipes at their booths. Patrons are expected to follow social distancing and are encouraged to wear masks.

A long time favourite since 1975, enjoy a fine dining Thanksgiving meal at Euphemia Haye Restaurant on Longboat Key. Open from 2-9 pm, the regular menu and daily specials are available. In addition, there will be two Thanksgiving Day specials: a sliced turkey plate with prune stuffing, gravy and honey-glazed carrots or a quarter duck entree with sage stuffing, raspberry sauce and honey-glazed carrots.

Florida Re-Opens and We’re Getting Ready to Welcome you Back!

We can’t wait to have you back. We know you are patiently waiting and ready to come and we hope it won’t be much longer now.

While we ourselves continue to wait patiently, we will continue with the deep cleaning of all our properties and be ready the minute Anna Maria Island rentals open back up.
At this time no rental check-ins are allowed, but there are positive signs that this could change. On April 29th the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, released an Executive Order 20-112 establishing “Phase 1: Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step. Plan for Florida’s Recovery” to begin today, May 4th. The order advises that “All persons in Florida shall continue to limit their personal interactions outside the home,” but allows for many businesses and public service providers to reopen at partial capacity.

Welcome news for Anna Maria Island as their three county operated beaches which have been closed since March 20th were given the go ahead to re-open today. Coquina, Cortez and Manatee Public beaches re-opened today with some restrictions in place. They will be open from 10am to 9pm seven days a week. There is a 2 hour parking limit with parking passes given to drivers when entering lots. These passes have an expiry of 2 hours. Beware if you are parked longer than the specified 2 hours — you can face $250 fines and towed cars for violators! Chairs, coolers and canopies will be allowed. Restrooms will be open, but concessions, playgrounds, amenities and picnic shelters will remain closed.
Please remember, social distancing guidelines still apply — Keeping groups to 10 or less and and maintain at least 6 feet between groups.

Following the announcement by Governor DeSantis that he is partially lifting the stay-at-home-orders, some retailers in Bradenton reopened today. The partial reopening order allows retail stores, museums and libraries to open at 25 percent indoor capacity.
Those that reopened are the Mall at University Town Center, Bealls and Ellenton Premium Outlets.
I just want to go to the beach, but if shopping is your thing, I advise a quick call call before heading out to confirm hours of operation.

Ending at Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach where Santa boards the Privateers flagship, Skullywag.

The Bridge Street merchants host this annual Christmas celebration on Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach. Bridge Street will be closed to traffic for this fun event. For everyone’s enjoyment there will be live bands, local Sweet Adeline singers, a cornhole tournament and free children’s Christmas ornament making activities.

7:00 pm — Holiday Lighted Boat Parade Bradenton Beach

While you are enjoying the holiday festivities on Bridge Street, you can also enjoy the spirit of the season watching owners set sail on their beautifully lit boats. The second annual Bradenton Beach Holiday Boat Parade will begin at 7:00 PM in the Intracoastal Waterway. The boat parade can be viewed by land. The parade will start south of Longboat Pass Bridge head North passing the Bridge Street Pier ending at the Bradenton Beach Marina. In total, the parade is expected to take 60 – 90 minutes.

Tip: Your best viewing will be from the Bridge Street Pier or the Cortez Bridge where the parade ends. These two spots will provide an optimal view of the lighted boats. As the boats approach the Bradenton Beach Marina near the end of the parade they will come right beside the pier before turning into the Marina.

December 14, 2019 – January 4, 2020 — Selby Gardens Lights In Bloom

Stroll through the Selby Gardens at 811 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota. More than two million sparkling lights shine and twinkle transforming the Selby Botanical Gardens at the 16th annual “Lights in Bloom” celebration. You can explore and view the tropical holiday wonderland with nightly visits from Santa and his elves (before Christmas Eve). Take a tour of the holiday decorated Mansion. There will be children’s arts and crafts, activities and games, plus live entertainment. Grilled foods will be available for purchase. Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. For millions of Americans it is a time to celebrate the fall harvest and give thanks for blessings of the past year.

When you think of Thanksgiving, what images come to mind? Roast turkey?

For some, it is roast turkey with the family gathering around the table for Dad’s famous gravy, watching football, football and more football, or perhaps the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

For others, it means spending Thanksgiving on Anna Maria Island — in a warm climate, with tropical cocktails, soft, sugar white sand beaches and where every hour is “happy hour.”

Preparing a Thanksgiving meal can take hours, sometimes even days, depending on what dishes you’re preparing and how many people you’re serving. If you’re like me and would rather leave the cooking to the professionals, consider making a reservation at one of these popular restaurants.

Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe (4000 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach, 941-778-0784) For a unique beachside Thanksgiving dinner, head over to the Beach Cafe located on Manatee Public Beach. Their family friendly Thanksgiving Buffett with all the “fixings” is available between 12:00 and 5:00 pm for just $19.99. Menu items to order will be offered as well. Enjoy Thanksgiving blessings while basking in the warm Florida sunshine and listening to the relaxing sound of the Gulf of Mexico. Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe offers casual gulf front patio and indoor dining on beautiful Holmes Beach.

Boston Market (5002 Cortez Road West, Bradenton 941-792-8366)

Boston Market offers a full menu of Thanksgiving food order for carry-out, delivery or dine-in from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. In addition to sliced turkey breast and rotisserie chicken, choose from holiday sides, appetizers and whole pies.

Bridge Street Bistro (111 Gulf Drive South, Bradenton Beach, 941-782-1122) makes it easy to enjoy Thanksgiving with a buffet dinner from 12:00 to 8:00 pm. Selections include salad, cheese display, turkey, prime rib, pan crusted salmon and your choice of 3 plated desserts. Adult $29.95 Child under 12 $14.95.

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (2203 Cortez Road West, Bradenton 941-778-0000) The restaurant chain states “Thanksgiving is a specialty.” Offering a special “Homestyle Turkey n’ Dressin” Thanksgiving meal for dine in guests from 11:00 am -10:00 pm. Heat n’ serve and to-go meals can be ordered as soon as 24 hours in advance.

Eliza Ann’s Coastal Kitchen (5325 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, 941-238-6264) will feature a three-course menu from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. Special chef’s selection include, salad/soup/duck confit, turkey/grouper/sea scallop/braised rib/vegan shepherd’s pie, lemon butter cake/bread pudding/pumpkin cheesecake bar/artisanal cheese plate. To reserve, call (941) 238-6262 or through OpenTable.

Marina Jacks (2 Marina Plaza, Sarasota 941-365-4232 ext 4) A short drive from Anna Maria Island you can dine and celebrate with sweeping views of Sarasota Bay. Starting at 11:00 am, the Main Dining Room will offer holiday specials throughout the day. Their dinner menu will also be featured. Specials will include a Traditional Roasted Turkey with Mashed Potatoes, Savory Herb Sausage Stuffing, Gravy, Green Bean Almondine and Cranberry Sauce for $27. Other Specials will include a Pepper Crusted Prime Rib served with Horseradish Sauce and Au Jus for $33. Rock Lee will be performing on the Piano Bar starting at 6:00 pm. Live music at 4:00 pm by the band Kettle of Fish will be featured on the Blue Sunshine Patio Bar. If you prefer to combine dinner with a boat cruise there will be two holiday cruises featured. Times are 1-3-5 and 7:00 pm featuring live music from Dan Crawford. The special buffet menu features Caesar Salad, Roasted Turkey with trimmings, Pan Seared Mahi with a Saffron Cream Sauce, Pumpkin Pie, Key Lime Pie, and Chocolate Fudge Cake. Pier 22 Restaurant (1200 First Avenue West, Bradenton 941-748-8087) casual fine dining in downtown Bradenton with a view of the riverfront. Thanksgiving menu includes a mix of everyone’s traditional food favourites. The Thanksgiving meal is from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. Call for reservations at 941-748-8087.

ZOTA Beach Resort (Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, 941-248-1207) Thanksgiving day buffet brunch from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm $49.95 for adults, $24.95 for children 4-11) at the resort’s Viento Kitchen + Bar. Featuring carved, roasted turkey breast, honey-baked ham, a smoked salmon display, grilled lemon pepper chicken, a chilled seafood bar and chef attended omelet station. A full bar will be offered; upgrade a meal with bottomless mimosas for an extra $10.

What do you do after a big meal on Thanksgiving?

Well, it’s time to Black Friday shop! Black Friday is the unofficial beginning of the Christmas Holiday shopping season. What can be more fun than joining people as they run from store to store in search of the best deals, looking to snag deep discounts. With the area malls and individual stores offering extended hours you can head to the outlet mall in Ellenton or University Parkway in Sarasota for some sure to be great deals.

But, what about those of us who don’t like crowds, and would rather just enjoy the beach? The Monday following Thanksgiving is Cyber Monday so if you choose to avoid the crazy crowds you can do all your shopping online. Thank goodness for the internet!

Allegiant Air Makes Flying to Bradenton/Sarasota (SRQ) Easier

Thinking about booking your fall or winter vacation? Our units at Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals have been recently renovated and are ready for you!

Helping to make traveling easier for our guests, Allegiant Air, the Las Vegas based budget airline, has added 24 new nonstop routes from smaller US cities to Bradenton/Sarasota (SRQ).
Air Allegiant’s latest expansion includes flights to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, which by the way, is our favourite airport to fly into. It is a relatively small airport, easy to navigate, with car rentals available and the best — it is only a 15 minute drive from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals.

The new flights, which can be booked on the airline’s website, Allegiant.com will generally be offered twice a week. Some flights are seasonal, others will operate year round. As you might expect the introductory fares will probably not be available for travel around Thanksgiving, Christmas or other peak travel periods.

Here’s where Allegiant is adding flights to and from: Sarasota, Florida (Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport) —
St. Louis, Missouri (MidAmerica St. Louis Airport): Seasonal service begins Nov. 15 with one-way fares starting at $69.
Des Moines, Iowa: Seasonal service begins Nov. 23 with fares starting at $79
Rockford, Illinois (Chicago Rockford International Airport): Seasonal service begins Nov. 23 with fares starting at $69.
Flint, Michigan: Seasonal service begins Nov. 24 with fares starting at $69.
Fort Wayne, Indiana: Seasonal service begins Nov. 24 with fares starting at $69.
Knoxville, Tennessee: Year-round service begins Nov. 21 with fares starting at $59.
Louisville, Kentucky: Seasonal service begins Nov. 25 with fares starting at $59.
South Bend, Indiana: Seasonal service begins Nov. 25 with fares starting at $69.

These eight additional destinations bring Allegiant’s total out of the SRQ airport to 20 cities. Allegiant has by far the most routes of any airline operating at Sarasota-Bradenton. The airline started service at SRQ in April 2018 with three destinations and announced an additional nine in November 2018.
The new flights in November 2019 are expected to bring nearly 54,000 new passengers a year through the airport. According to airport sources, Allegiant has flown 228,000 passengers in its 15 months at SRQ and had an economic impact of $138 million on the community over that time.

Discount airline fares are almost always enticing. Allegiant, like fellow discount airlines Spirit and Frontier, charges low base fares plus fees for “extras,” including seat assignment, carry-on or checked bag, in-flight drinks and food and more.

Here are 10 things to know about Allegiant before you book —

The ticket price only gets you a seat on the plane. Yes, your seat and a personal item only! The airlines charge extra for seat assignments, checked and carry-on bags, snacks and drinks, including water. To avoid add-on fees check the carrier’s website.
Print your own boarding pass. Allegiant charges to print boarding passes at the airport. Allegiant charges $5 per boarding pass printed by an airport agent at select airports. (The airline doesn’t have kiosks.)

Allegiant does not accept reservations for carriage of fare-paying unaccompanied minors or unescorted children under the age of fifteen (15) years. Children fourteen (14) years and younger must be accompanied by an adult fifteen (15) years or older. Special supervision for any travelers is not offered.
Bags don’t fly free, even carry-on bags. Passengers are allowed one free personal item that stores completely under the seat in front of you such as a backpack, purse or laptop bag. There is no charge for one personal item, provided it does not exceed size requirements.
Want to bring a standard carry-on bag to put in the overhead bin? You’ll pay. Carry-on bag fees vary by carrier and when you pay for the carry on. (See #6 below.) The airline closely monitors the size of those carry-ons.

Each bag must weigh 40 lbs or less and the outside measurements of each bag must not exceed eighty (80) inches. Applicable fees will be applied for those bags exceeding the weight and size limits. The total number of bags allowed may not exceed 4 per passenger. On Allegiant, travelers will pay $25-$30 for the first checked bag during online booking, $45 after booking but before they get to the airport and $50 at the airport. Bottom line: Save by paying for your bags when you book your ticket.
For those us of that like to over-stuff our bags — Don’t. Well, not unless you want to pay. The weight limit for checked bags on Allegiant (see #6) is 40 pounds, not the standard 50 pounds allowed at major airlines. Overweight bag charges apply in all cases.Overweight bags fee — add $50 – $75

Whatever you do, don’t bring a bag to the gate in an attempt to avoid bag fees. Some major airlines often ask for volunteers to check their bags for free on full flights where overhead bin space is bound to fill up. Allegiant charges $50 to check bags at the gate. If you plan to bring a carry-on, pay for it when you book your ticket.
You have limited rebooking options if your flight is canceled or delayed. Because Allegiant doesn’t offer daily flights, if your flight is canceled for weather or mechanical reasons you might not get out for a couple of days.

To prepare for or avoid add-on fees always check the carrier’s website.

Discount airlines certainly grab our attention with low fares, but remember the purchase price is only one factor. Cheap flights are cheap… but don’t forget the ancillary fees. Everything from checked luggage to printed boarding passes to a soft drink while aboard can quickly make a cheap fare pretty pricey.
When you’re looking to maximize every dollar, every trip, it’s worth comparing prices between budget and major airlines.

How is it already August? Summer is flying by; doesn’t it always?

As September approaches, the lazy days at the pool, sand between your toes, and thoughts of the end of summer, you might just find yourself thinking about your next vacation.

The definition of a vacation varies. For some it is: sitting on a lounge chair, reading a book, with your favourite drink in your hand, all the while considering your dinner options. And, a time to recharge and restore your body and mind.
