Patent filings alone don’t guarantee new products, but there are times when a patent is so specific that something tangible is likely to follow. A newly discovered Sony wireless VR patent strongly suggests that big changes are coming to the next-generation PlayStation VR headset — the latest indication that the company is preparing to push “tethered” headset technology forward, rather than trying a different formula.

From a big-picture perspective, the patent is about removing the wire that connects the VR headset to a PlayStation — a seemingly simple change that would enable VR users to move around a room without tripping over the headset’s cabling. Sony released the original PSVR with a fairly thick cable, but Microsoft ultimately passed on an Xbox One VR headset, citing cabling as a key reason for waiting.

Industry conferences are a valuable opportunity to do everything from network to learn new skills. However, they can be expensive in terms of accommodation, airfare, registration, and any other costs that may arise while traveling. Even if a conference is in the same city, there are still substantial costs involved. To go beyond that, many industry leaders also want to be the chair of a conference or even host it, since it improves visibility within a market. With the newest innovations in video conferencing, though, you can be that company. Video conferencing is a useful communication tool for everyday business, but it’s gotten even bigger now that live streaming is available. Businesses have begun to use live streaming video conferencing capability for all sorts of events, ranging from conferences to product launches. It’s also the perfect platform upon which to host a small to medium-sized conference. Here are a few tips about how to host a conference using live streaming technology.

  1. Why a Conference?

This is a good question, and the answer is that most major industries have an annual conference to discuss the current state of the market. If you really want to be a pioneer into the industry in which you’re involved, one of the first rules of thumb is to get involved in the annual conference. Whether you’re on a committee, helping to organize, or the host, every business is trying to be a leader at the event. Jen Dziura on Daily Worth reports that when she was building her first company, an Internet marketing firm, the approach that really brought in clients was holding a conference. It was through this that she was able to network, build relationships, and even co-found organizations. The best way to save money when it comes to conferences, though, is to utilize live webcasting services. Blue Jeans offers some great options, even for the most large scale events. When you’re ready to take your conference into the most modern day setting, doing it online is the way to go.

  1. A Meet and Greet Video Conferencing Style

There’ usually a meet and greet when it comes to conferences, but you may be asking yourself what to do if the conference is totally online. The American Bar recommends in their instructions for planning a professional meet and greet that the location should be somewhere that can easily accommodate your group and also has something to offer participants. In theory, the best way to accommodate any group of people is to do business and have discussions in a virtual space. The best way to have a meet and greet via video conference is to allow attendees to connect later. Handing out business cards and other contact info after a presentation, particular to those who didn’t get to speak, is a great way to foster engagement. The other idea behind a video conference versus real life meeting with a potential candidate allows you to assess whether they’re appropriate for a position.

  1. The Rules of Presenting

Presenting in the context of an academic conference can be a little different than your ordinary presentation. It takes skill and the ability to talk to different types of people, but there are definitely some rules that anyone can follow. For example, the American Historical Association advises scholars to focus on a few key elements for a successful presentation:

  • Obey time limits
  • Cater to your audience
  • Practice your presentation
  • Avoid nervous gestures and fidgeting
  • Check the room in advance, but in this case, you’d check the equipment
  • Don’t improvise or get too casual

While you shouldn’t act as though the audience is your best friend, it’s totally acceptable to field questions and relate to them on a personal level. Act cool and casual, and try not to display any nervous behavior. It’s important to be able to show a balance between being an ordinary human versus a presenter.

  1. A Conference Spread Across the World

One of the best aspects of using live streaming to convey information is the fact that knowledge isn’t restricted by boundaries or geography. You can find experts anywhere in the world or participants, who will be interested in joining in. The point is that a conference can be prohibitively expensive for colleagues who are from long distances away, whereas video conferencing makes it possible for everyone to have an equal chance at hearing expertise.

Planning a conference using live streaming is very similar to planning a regular conference. You just have to take into account those essential differences in the way that presentations are made, information is conveyed, and how audience participation changes when you’re dealing with video technology. Make sure that everyone is on board with how the process will work, participants and presents alike. The best part of hosting a video conference is that it places you as a leader in your industry.

A track record of victory in the casino industry has set up Sony for success

Japan is known to all as one of the best examples of modern technology coexisting with ancient traditions. Despite their technological advancements, Japan has stayed true to the traditions of its culture, and this can be seen not just in the architecture that dots Japan’s landscape, but in the attitudes of her people as POTWWheelofFor-lgwell. This is perhaps why, despite a global push towards gaming liberalization, the notion has far from been adapted in modern-day Japan.

With the 2020 Olympics looming ever closer, however, Japan has finally begun to look into the possibilities of opening land-based casinos and casino resorts on the island nation. MGM Resorts International has already begun talks to try and get a casino resort built in time for the Olympics. MGM Chief Executive James Murren has said that “time is of the essence,” as “There seems to be a very strong political will to move this forward and who knows what that environment will be a year or two from now.” Grant Govertsen, an analyst at the Union Gaming Group, has also said that, “The powers-that-be in Japan have decided that the one-two punch of the Olympics and the opening of integrated resorts in 2020 would provide a boost to the country’s profile and we would agree.”

Should these efforts to bring land-based casinos to Japan bear fruit, Sony stands to benefit immensely from its standing deals. International Game Technology (IGT), a leading manufacturer of slot machines, has recently entered into a renewed agreement with Sony Pictures Consumer Products to produce their line of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopard! machines – by far the most popular slot machines in casinos to date.

But that’s not all. As Intercasino, the world’s first online casino, explains in a blog post, one of the major draws of live casinos is that they “usually have a festive and pretty active atmosphere. This usually keeps the gamblers and the people inside awake”, and Sony has already proven its ability to bring this to the table by providing its services to the Grand Casino Luzern in Switzerland. Grand Casino Luzern’s Marketing Manager, Philipp Albrecht said: “Sony’s displays satisfy our high demands for visual communication. Above all, the displays impressed us because of their truly outstanding image quality and user-friendliness.”

The strength of the campaign to liberalize gaming in Japan has been questioned, but should casino resorts indeed be introduced into the nation, Sony stands ready to benefit. What with contracts with some of the world’s top casinos under its belt, it clearly comes out on top.

A look at the new services out there, what’s on the way, and how they all differ.

Sony has become the latest major player to enter the streaming television market by introducing a paid service in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.

The pay-TV service, Playstation Vue, offers both live television and on-demand streaming video from more than 50 channels, including several major broadcast and cable networks, at a base monthly price of $50. Playstation Vue is available to PS3 and PS4 owners in three U.S. cities, with the service expanding to more areas and other devices (including the iPad) later this year.

Sony SNE -0.56% is the latest domino, and a big one, to fall in the ongoing evolution of Internet television that is shifting the industry away from the traditional television subscription model. The launch of the Playstation Vue follows the Dish Network’s release of the similar Sling TV subscription service, and it comes just one day after reports surfaced saying Apple’s AAPL 0.70% own online pay-TV service could launch later this year.

Keeping a team on task when they are spread across a wide geographical area can feel a little like herding cats. While traditional methods of remote conferencing such as teleconferencing or chat rooms can help increase team engagement, many project managers find them lacking or that team members engage less than when able to meet each other face-to-face. Increasing engagement between team members, no matter where they happen to be, should be one of the top bullet points on any project manager’s to-do list.

Video Conferencing for All Points

It used to be that videoconferencing was done with a room-based system, often with proprietary architecture, and requiring its own in-house server. Depending on the equipment for the receiving sites, video could be jittery, pixelated, out of sync, or even nonexistent. Audio signals would often drop lending that “I am talking underwater” feeling to anyone listening in. With the rise of widely available broadband, many companies have been so invested in their large expensive systems that they are not looking at the benefits of a new and less resource intensive cloud-based architecture for their videoconferencing needs. With new cloud-based apps, the meeting room is anywhere that your team members happen to be at that time.

An ideal videoconferencing system should exhibit cross-platform and multi-device interoperability scalability, as well as being able to handle meetings both large and small. Being able to record and playback meetings, share content, and do so in total security should be some of the key points on which a new videoconferencing system such as those offered by Bluejeans should be evaluated. It should be easy to join or initiate meetings from any location, whether it’s a smart phone in a remote location, or a laptop or desktop at the main office.

Why Video Conferencing?

Investopedia.com points out that videoconferencing is a more inclusive experience over teleconferencing since the users can see and engage with each other instead of being trapped in a meeting room with a talking head on a screen or a voice coming from a box. By engaging with each other on a face-to-face level instead of through a one-way medium your team members can develop stronger relationships, as well as reducing the out of office time, expenses, and stress associated with business traveling.

The more traditional methods of meeting face-to-face took a real hit during the 2009 financial crisis and the resulting recession. Budgets for public and private sector companies were slashed nearly to the bone in an effort to save money for vital operations. However, it can be argued that teamwork suffers when meetings are either canceled or never given a proper place in the process at all. Face-to-face interaction is more than speech, and nuances of communication can be lost when team members are unable to engage and work with each other. A study from Gigaom research revealed some statistics that project managers should consider if they are having difficulty in coordinating their remote staff.

  • 87 percent of videoconferencing users were able to feel more connected with their colleagues and projects when using videoconferencing.
  • 57 percent said that videoconferencing with systems like Blue Jeans Mobile Video Collaboration enriches their relationships with their colleagues, clients, and vendors and additionally made them feel more productive.
  • A Gallup poll cited in the Gigaom study also reflected increasing disengagement among highly educated and middle-aged employees, 71 percent reporting that they felt either unengaged or actively disengaged from their work and workplace.

In other words, your most productive and experienced staff could be suffering from what can be termed “terminal disengagement” and this can in turn go down the ladder of seniority to affect everyone within the organization. Re-engaging staff with videoconferencing and the chance to feel productive and enthusiastic about their work situation can revive a moribund organizational culture more so than any overpriced symposium or rah-rah teamwork consultant.

This strategy can also work and pay huge dividends with your younger generation of staff. Already accustomed to using apps such as Skype, younger staff also suffer from the stress of business travel – generally because they may have young children, or do not have enough seniority to engage an assistant to cover their workload when they are out of the office. According to Verizon’s commissioned study by Infocom states that business travelers cite stress in being away from family and other work responsibilities that detract from the productivity of business meetings. By putting in place a videoconferencing system that allows users to join from devices they are already familiar with such as smartphones and tablets, the younger generation may be the most enthusiastic users of videoconferencing within your organization. Implementing a system that has something for everybody could read you up and get your organization back to fulfilling its objectives.

Since video chat software broke into the mainstream over a decade ago, it has been a very popular solution to connecting with loved ones or colleagues over a long distance in a way that is a bit more personal than text-based media like Facebook or email. More recently, high-end companies like Blue Jeans web conferencing have developed suites that build on the highly personal communication made possible by video chat. They do so by deftly integrating other modes of communication with the video and by implementing countless features that will both help your exchange be more productive and make the communication a fun experience. Because many people are unclear on just why video conferencing suites are so much more useful and convenient than video chat software, however, the following list will let you know 12 fan favorite features that set apart the two application types.

  1. Cloud Operation – Almost all video conferencing software is based in the cloud, which means a few important things. Firstly, no downloads or time-consuming setups are required to get the conference up and running on your computer. Second, the participants can easily draw from online sources when sharing data. In other words, a file need only be on the internet, and not the sender’s computer, in order to be shared.
  2. Universal Compatibility – Some people are more comfortable using Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or some other service they know, even if it is less versatile than video conferencing software. That’s okay, though, because video conferencing services are compatible with all of those video chat programs and can integrate them into the conversation.
  3. Many Participants – While simple video chat services like Skype only allow you to video chat one-on-one, video conferencing software lets you add in literally thousands of participants, and the administrator of the conference can choose which features each of them will have access to during the communication. This makes video conference software essential for meetings with an entire project team or a large family get-together.
  4. Voice-Sensing Technology – You may think that with so many participants, the thumbnails of each one’s video would clutter up the screen. Most video conferencing programs can sense who is talking, however, and they will put the talker’s video on the screens of all the participants.
  5. Easy Screen Sharing – The participants can each share their screens with everyone else in the conversation, which makes demonstrations and presentations vivid. Other participants can even control the shared screen themselves, making the experience extremely interactive.
  6. Recording – Everything that takes place during a video conferencing session is recorded and stored in a private online database. Afterwards, poignant or crucial moments in the conversation can be revisited. People who could not attend can also be shown the recording in order to let them relive the meeting.
  7. Stringent Security – The multiple layers of government-grade encryption placed on the digital interactions overseen by video conferencing services, as well as the physical security measures imposed on meetings that are recorded and stored in the companies’ warehouses, ensure that your interactions are never viewed by unauthorized parties.
  8. Stats and Analytics – Before, during, and after meetings, administrator-specified participants can view statistics and information about demographics and remote activity of the other meeting attendees.
  9. Enterprise with Ease – The platform video conferencing software runs on is much more accessible than that of video chat programs, and that lets IT staff more easily set and monitor access permissions, passwords, and individual user privileges.
  10. Phone Participation – Pretty much all video conferencing services offer free apps for Android, iOS, and Blackberry, but even those with traditional cell phones that cannot download apps can participate by phoning into a phone number assigned to the conversation and hooking into the meeting’s audio stream.
  11. Calendar Integration – Video conferencing software integrates with Google Calendar, Outlook, and other scheduling applications to help participants remember to attend the remote meetings.
  12. Turn Your Conferences into Exclusive Webinars – Video conferencing services make online meetings so productive that they can be marketed to the outside world as webinars. You can then advertise the webinar using integrated social media features, sell tickets using built-in PayPal compatibility, use the professional meeting features to present like a pro, and even follow up by using integrated tools to gather survey results and create meeting reports.

Video conferencing software is a revolutionary technology and is the future of remote communication, but you must make sure to use a quality program in order to get the most out of it. Top-notch providers are perfect for launching your communication to the next level of clarity. Such services generally offer free trials, so, no matter what you use video communication for, it is a great idea to try such a trial as soon as possible and learn for yourself what you have been missing.

We’ve known about Sony’s 4K-heavy 2015 lineup of TVs since CES in January, when the company announced their existence and posted detailed specifications on their features and differences.

In February when the prices leaked Sony neither confirmed no denied their accuracy, until now. A couple weeks before the first models start shipping, Sony has announced official pricing and put the TVs up for preorder on its site. It also gave CNET a hands-on peek at the new sets, complete with details on its HDR (high dynamic range) strategy.

Of fourteen new Sony TVs the company highlighted, ten have 4K resolution and all support the AndroidTV operating system. They range from 43 to 75 inches but skew mostly very large, with eight models at 65 or 75 inches. And they’re not cheap.

Here’s the full lineup:

A major software update coming to PlayStation 4 tomorrow will bring a number of requested features to the system that Sony says will enhance the social aspects of its console.

The update, which is codenamed “Yukimura,” includes a new suspend/resume feature that will allow gamers to jump in and out of games quickly and pick up where they left off. The patch will also allow users to search for fellow gaming friends on Facebook and easily view what their friends are playing with the addition of a “Friends Who Play This” section on each game detail page.

In fact, Sony appears to be making more of a push toward social networking site integration overall. A new feature is coming tomorrow that automatically take a screenshot when a Trophy is earned and which can then be shared online. Users can also sort their Trophy list into new categories, like “Earned Date,” “Not Earned” and “Grade,” and have the option to remove games from the Trophy list that have zero percent completion.

Likewise, players will have the ability to upload video clips directly to Dailymotion, while Twitter-like verified accounts will also be introduced for games industry professionals, developers, producers, designers and community managers. These accounts will feature badges that designate the account is verified.

Sony is also working to improve and expand its accessibility options, making it easier for gamers with impaired vision and limited manual dexterity to play. Customized button assignment for the controller and a zoom feature for displayed pictures, as well as inverted colors, will be available after the update. Similarly, text-to-speech and enlarged text will be made available.

PlayStation Vita systems and PlayStation App for smartphones will also receive system software updates tomorrow, and will get complimentary features to those added on PS4. The PS Vita update version 3.50 and PlayStation App update version 2.50 will add new accessibility options, including enlarge text and increase contrast.

The two new Sony television sets shown off by Sony this morning called S90b-65 and S90B-75 are both massive in their own respects. Holding true to Sony’s mantra “when you see more, you feel more,” these televisions are big enough to bring the biggest and the best Sony entertainment to your home.

Both the 75-inch and the 65-inch S90B televisions will be appearing first in October of this year. Both will be bringing the heat with full 4K resolution, and both will be coming to Europe first.

Both units work with TRILUMINOS Display technology as well as X-tended Dynamic Range for highlights and deep blacks. Sony’s 4K X-Reality PRO technology appears in these sets for upscaling of regular TV broadcasts as well as Blu-ray movies.

Sony suggests that the picture quality on the S90 units is the same as you’ll find on the high-end Sony X9 4K TV. These units also work with Sony’s 4.2 channel Multi-angle Live Speaker system and the optional Wireless Subwoofer in white – that’s the SWF-BR100. Also available in black, the SW-BR100B.

Stay tuned as we hear release and pricing information. Sooner than later!
