Crowd March For Peace In Point Breeze (Philly)

March For Peace in Point Breeze 7/29/2013

Unity in the Community, a local nonprofit that Aton Moore, 27, founded held a peace rally in the park as part of the organization's second annual Peace Week festivities.

     Last night's rally, which was attended by a number of local pols - including state Sen. Anthony Williams, City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and state Reps. Jordan Harris and Brian Sims - ended with a boisterous march from Wharton Square, at 24th and Reed streets, to Stinger Square Park, at 32nd and Reed in Grays Ferry.

     "People are tired of being tired. They want something to happen; they want kids to have a safe place to grow up," Moore said.

     Earlier this year, he received a $10,000 grant from the Philly chapter of Black Male Engagement (BMe), which is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

     Moore said he put the money toward adding more entertainment and events to Peace Week, which tonight will include a party for teens hosted by Power 99 FM at the Dixon House on 20th Street near Mifflin.

     Other events this week will include a peace conference and a college-readiness seminar for local youth.

     "Everybody wants peace," Moore said. "It's not just an African-American thing. It's a white thing, a Hispanic thing. Nobody wants to get shot!"

3,000 African Americans Buried Beneath South Philly Playground

In the Queen Village neighborhood of South Philadelphia are the forgotten remains of an estimated 3,000 African-Americans.

The stone of Amelia Brown, who died April 3, 1819

     This week in South Philly , a team of archaeologists broke the asphalt in four places at Weccecoe Park, digging to a depth of 3 feet to uncover evidence of the 19th century burial site. On Thursday morning, the fourth and final trench revealed a single gravestone.

"Amelia Brown, 1819, Aged 26 years" is clearly carved into the white stone, with this epitaph:

"Whosoever live and believeth in me, though we be dead, yet shall we live."
"There is no grave shaft associated with that stone, it's just sitting loose in the fill," said Douglas Mooney, senior archaeologist for URS corporation. "It was knocked over at some point, long ago, when the cemetery was filled in in the mid-19th century. It no longer marks an actual grave. It's just a loose stone in the ground."
     Mooney and his team found evidence of many grave shafts, and stone walls representing the border of the cemetery. They have been digging to determine exactly where the cemetery limits are, and how far down. The team stopped digging several feet shy of where actual bones could be.
     Amelia Brown was likely a member of Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, the oldest African-American church in the country. At the time, the late 18th century, cemeteries in Philadelphia would not accept black people.

Also at the time, the property near Fourth and Queen streets was not within Philadelphia city limits, so Mother Bethel A.M.E. bought it as a private cemetery in 1810 and used it as such until 1864.

Then the property languished, was abandoned, was used as a dump. In 1888, the property was sold to the city to pay for a new church that's still in use today. The site lay vacant a few more years until the city developed a playground on it.

By then the memory of the dead had faded smooth. Mother Bethel Church left nothing behind to mark the burial site.

81 Year-Old Women Attacked and Robbed

The Victim 81 year old women, says she went into a store on the 1100 block of South Broad Street around 1 p.m. back on June 17 to buy a lottery ticket. As she started to leave the store, a man walked behind her and opened the door for her. When the woman reached the 1300 block of South Juniper Street he allegedly put her in a choke-hold, threw her up against a wall, snatched her wallet and then fled on foot west on Wharton Street, according to investigators.

The victim, a widow with no children, says she's afraid that she can't sleep at night. That's why police are working hard to find the suspect.

Police say the suspect was wearing a white t-shirt, dark-colored shorts and dark-colored shoes.

Diamond Williams was also known as Mark Williams.

Diamond Williams was in to the drugs and prostitution thing. The risky occupation turned fatal when police say, Williams was picked up by Charles Sargent, who took her to his home in Strawberry Mansion around mid July.

Charles Sargent is accused of murder and dumping body parts

Police say Sargent, 43, allegedly used a hatchet and screwdriver to kill Williams and then dumped her remains in a vacant lot near York Street and Sedgley Avenue North Philly.

Tribute to Williams loved ones gathered Tuesday evening at John F. Kennedy Plaza to remember Williams, 31, of Ogontz, and bring awareness to violence against transgender women.

Michael Vick Involved in Charity Helping Imprisoned Kids

Some saw Michael Vick's recent involvement with a children's charity as a publicity stunt to save face, but Vick is adamant that isn't the case. The NFL quarterback says he's a changed man for the better, and it's all thanks to his 2-year bid in prison.
The Philadelphia Eagle QB called in to TMZ Live and spoke on his involvement in the charity, which is called Team Freedom Outreach. The purpose of the charity is to recruit volunteers to play sports with kids that are locked up.
"Sometimes it takes this...for a person to go through certain hardships...to realize what their purpose really is," said Vick. "I think God placed it on my heart when I was incarcerated to come out and be the best person I can be and to help as many people as I can help."
Vick is so passionate about the charity that he actually took a trip to D.C. to meet with Rep. John Lewis, hoping he could make more headway with the program.

2 Fake Cops Try To Rob Platinum Jewelers

Two men are seen on video walking into a Center City jewelry store looking like law enforcement officers. The word ‘police’ can be seen on what appears to be bulletproof vests.
The real police say the men walked into Platinum Jewelers at 12th and Market Streets around noon Monday and tried to rob the place. At first glance, one would think this crime was the work of just two men. But Philadelphia Police say it looks like they had some help.
Just minutes before the masked men entered the business, two customers, both seen in surveillance pictures wearing wigs, acting like they were shopping, at times on the phone.
Employees now believe they were speaking with the police impersonators, who were waiting for the signal to come in.
Once the robbers were inside, a female employee pressed the alarm. The man in the black vest moved behind the counter with his gun out.
But realizing they probably didn’t have much time, the fake cops took off without getting a dime or one piece of jewelry.
Employees say all four men jumped into an older model gray Mercury Grand Marquis.
The car had a Pennsylvania tag that police figured out was stolen off another vehicle in Mount Airy.

Standing up for Justice for Our Black Babies protested at LOVE Park a day after George Zimmerman was acquitted in Trayvon Martin's killing.

Mayor Nutter, was among those who expressed disappointment in George Zimmerman's acquittal in the killing of Trayvon Martin.
"A young black man is dead without any real explanation," Nutter said in a statement. "George Zimmerman took an innocent life. Trayvon Martin, who at trial was made to appear threatening when all he had was a bag of Skittles and an iced tea, should not have died at Zimmerman's hands, and I believe the jury should have exacted a penalty." That's a great point he made. The jury should have issued some type of penalty.

So were do we go from here. Do we PROTEST hold demonstrations, what good is that going to do. Who's listening other than other black folks. The people we really want to reach out to aren't listening. Some people say let's march. You'll march to a location of the ***** choosing, speak for as long as there choosing. Basically the begging asking for justice is getting old. What can we really do to make a change. Ask yourself that.

Profile for Noel is a 6-foot-11, 228-pound center who averaged 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.4 blocks in his one season at Kentucky. He was also named SEC Defensive Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year as well as First Team All-SEC.

Nerlens Noel now a Sixer

Noel played in 24 games at Kentucky before suffering a torn ACL in his left knee in February of this year.
Holiday, a 2009 first-round draft pick by the Sixers, played four seasons in Philadelphia and made his first All-Star team this past season as a 22-year-old by averaging 17.7 points, 8.0 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game.

     Thelma Wright was philly born and raised.  The story goes she went to a Catholic school and was know to be a very nice girl.

     She married a man the was into the fast life. Thelma Wright eventually rose to the top of the "game" and became Philly's "Queenpin" following the death of her husband. She made a lot of money and glorified that life but Thelma had her ups and downs.

   Thelma wants to get her message to all the young people who think the street game is a way of life.

Another bloody night in Philadelphia left three dead in three shootings in three parts of the city.

The tragic violence began around 9:45 p.m. when someone started licking shots outside Oak Lane Express Pizza on the 7200 block of Ogontz Avenue a West Oak Lane neighborhood. Philly Police found a 33-year-old man who lived nearby suffering from four gunshot wounds right in front of his home. That man died a short time later at Einstein Hospital. That was the 1st shooting 7/9/13.

Police then responded to a double shooting along the 5800 block of 5th Street just after 11:30 p.m. Two men were found bleeding on the sidewalk next to the Lowell Elementary School playground.

“Police transported both victims to Einstein Hospital,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

A 21-year-old male who was shot in the chest died. Another male, possibly in his late teens, was in critical condition after being shot four times. Small said police believe the victims were walking down the street together when they were shot. He said police would look over school surveillance to see if it recorded any part of the shooting. This is the 2nd shooting reported.

Around 2 a.m., police officers responded to the 2500 block of Marston Street in North #philly. Police officers on the scene say they found a 32-year-old man hit from gunshot wounds to his neck, shoulder, chest and stomach shot this guy was shot on his front porch. The victim was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Now that was the 3rd shooting

There are no motives reported for any of the shootings. No one is under arrest.

3 Shot, 1 Killed, 2 Shootings in Philly

Two men hospitalized and another dead. They were in two different incidents overnight. Philly Police were called to the 400 block of Howell Street at 12:30am investigating a man shot. When the officer arrived they heard from neighbors that two people were actually shot during an apparent would-be robbery, said police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

A 23-year-old man remained in critical condition Tuesday morning after being shot in the head and twice in the torso. A 19-year-old was in stable condition after being shot in the leg, Small said.

Philly Police say a body was found in a Northeast Philadelphia sanitation yard on Monday July 8, 2013. They found a man in his 60's or 70's DEAD.

There was no immediate word as to how the man died as this investigation begins.

However, police did say there were "no obvious signs of foul play."

SUV Mistaken as Cab, Assault Driver: Points Gun at Philly Police

Philly Police say the incident began around 12:30 a.m. Monday when the driver dropped off his girlfriend at Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue in North Philadelphia. Three men approached the stopped red SUV and demanded a ride.

Police say the victim tried to explain that he wasn’t a cab driver but that the men forced the man to give them a ride after they began to physically attack the driver. The armed men forced the man to drive to the 5100 block of Rubicam Street in the Germantown neighborhood while assaulting the driver along the way, according to police. When the men arrived on Rubicam Street they pulled the driver form the car and continued to rough him up, police said. Just around the same time a police detective responding to a separate crime scene turned down the street and saw the attack.

The officer identified himself to the attackers before the armed men pointed a gun at him while getting back into the SUV. The officer opened fire striking the vehicle a few times. The SUV was abandoned a couple of blocks away. It’s unclear if any of the suspects were hit. The driver wasn't identified and police didn't say if he was injured during the ordeal.

Police have charged Erika Williams with DUI after crashing into a group of people in the Oxford Circle section of Philadelphia and injuring 2 adults and 2 children.

She was on her way home from a barbecue in Kensington where she was involved in a argument with a couple of people.

The crash happened roughly around 11:00 p.m. Saturday on the 900 block of Anchor Street.

Her vehicle struck a 5-year-old girl, her 2-year-old brother and their 36-year-old mother.The family, from New Jersey, was at a birthday party on the block. A fourth woman was also struck.

Phillies: Domonic Brown and teammate Cliff Lee make All Star Team

Domonic Brown had a great first half and been rewarded with the outfielder's first All-Star selection. He'll join with Phillies pitcher teammate Cliff Lee.

There are no real surprises here. Major League Baseball announced the participants for the 2013 All-Star Game on Saturday, and while no Phillies were voted in by the fans, two were so worthy of inclusion on the National League roster.

For Domonic Brown, this is a special honor as a first-time selection and the main attraction for Phillie who have been enjoying his breakout season.

Stampede at the Fireworks Show at the Parkway in Philly

Some say gunshots let off, People said it was firecrackers, even a source says a bbgun. Whatever it was it started a chaotic frenzy and everyone ran for there lives down the parkway in Philly. You woulda thought Godzilla was coming.

Police say someone fired a BB gun into the crowd, making a large group of people run down the parkway in panic mode.

Mainly there have been no immediate reports of serious injuries.
