The next morning, his wife was back, and more pleasant than ever. It didn't make sense, but what could Kurt do?

He just has to sell his old car off...except something keeps going wrong...

It's got a good premise, though. Check it out: Joe, a young father of a newborn, is watching his child when he hears a voice threatening voice from the baby monitor. He rushes into the baby's room to find that...no one is there.

It's part one, this month. It's a really long story, so part two will be coming along very soon, but it was too much to fit into one episode. The story is presented in it's original state, and I think it's pretty decent for what it is.

The last relative that knew William just died, but William is still hanging around. No portal to the next realm has appeared, and William has no idea why...

Anklecast 49: The Spirit Of Christmas

Back in 2009, Rish and I put together a Christmas special on the Dunesteef called "The Spirit of Christmas." It was an audiodrama, which is a bit of a useless beast when it comes to writing. You can just as readily publish an audiodrama script as you can a screenplay. However, I didn't want the story to go to waste because I liked it a great deal, so I converted it from script to short story. I present the finished product to you today, and it's coming to you on the...13th anniversary of the original. Wow, I'm getting old.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa, Festive Festivus, and Happy New Year to all! I hope your new year will be bright and wonderful, and I hope that you enjoy the story.

Today's story is "Party Girl." It's one that I wrote just last year as I was working my way towards 300,000 words.

I tried really hard to come up with something other than, "Houston, we have a problem," because that phrase, and countless inane variations of it, are pretty much the only thing anyone uses in conjunction with the word Houston. For example, when the Astros won the world series, what was the headline in the newspaper? "Houston, we have a championship." It gets tedious. So, I went a totally different direction and came out with a much worse title for the episode. Sorry.

I ramble way too much, and get sidetracked, and even talk about my cat, which is crazy. Watching this show, I realize that I need to get these Anklecasts out more often, so I can make them shorter, more to the point, and tell better stories in them. Hopefully, I can get that going, but you know me, so probably not.

This is not the follow up to the last episode just yet. Sorry folks. I don't know if anyone's all excited about that or not, but I'm not there yet. However, just after putting out the call for listener input on the last episode I happened to get together with Rish Outfield on an evening when we weren't ready to record anything else, so we decided to record an Anklecast. Then, sadly, I let it sit for a long time...like Stephen King does with his short stories, right?...it had to mellow a little. Also, the crazy time of year descended upon us, so there was that too.

Anyway, Rish and I got together, and we talked about...you guessed it! Writing! It must have been an effective talk, because since recording it, I've written my first short story in about a year. I shipped my pants pretty much the whole month of April through. I'm going to turn it around, however. It won't be my condition forever. Novel writing time is coming up, and my story is starting to burn away in my mind. I'm getting excited about it. But I've got to make some changes to make this novel thing succeed.

I talk a bit about that, and I have a special surprise. Normally I don't do stories on here, but I wanted to show that I can turn things around, so I did one this month. It's a little bit of flash fiction called "One Million Miles." If you like it, let me know, and I'll try to do one more often.

On the drive to work today, I Anklecasted another one. I talk a little bit about my trip to Vegas with Rish for the New Media Expo. I also report on my success and then my lack of success on keeping up with the goals I set for myself in 2013. Good thing they reset each week, so I can get started on them again.

Because now has never happened before, and it only lasts for now. Live for now.

It's a stupid commercial slogan for Pepsi, but it resonated for me anyway. It didn't make me want to drink Pepsi, because I don't like that stuff at all really, but it did make me think I need to get on with my life, and achieve what I want to achieve.

Over the last few weeks, I've been trying to set out some writing goals for 2013. Here they are:

Record story planning session each trip to work.
Transcribe recording upon arriving.
Read a chapter in a writing improvement book once a week.
Write 30 mins each lunchbreak.
Write at least 30 minutes a day.
5000 words a week.
20000 words a month.
25 stories a year, 2 per month.
Report about it on the blog.

While on my drive to work today, I pulled out my tablet, and recorded myself talking about these goals. It's something I'm hoping to do once a week. It'll just be me talking about whatever I feel about talking about. I'm going to call it the Anklecast. So, here is episode 1. Enjoy it if you can.

Oh, and yes, I know the quality of the sound is total crap. I think I can improve it, but I'll need a few things to make it happen, so I'm not sure how soon I'll be able to do that. Hopefully right away, or close to it. We'll see. But bear with me, and things will get better. They sure can't get worse, right?
