Julio Lagos is a well-known Argentine journalist, radio broadcaster, and television personality, winner of the King of Spain International Journalism Award. There is a tentative connection between my online Argentine Tango Radio and Julio: he was Argentina's first-ever internet radio broadcaster, launching a live stream of "La mañana de Julio Lagos" in May 1997!

It will be interesting to exchange ideas with a pioneer of online radio broadcasting from the other side of the world, and I'm looking forward to the interview. Unfortunately my Spanish is not good enough for participating in a Spanish language interview - a shame, really, after being a tango DJ for so many years. Maybe this will be the final push to start learning Spanish seriously. Instead of talking in English, Julio suggested that we ask a Hungarian-Spanish interpreter for help, and he also took the pain to find someone. This may give an interesting spice to the discussion: I bet for many Rivadavia listeners this will be the first time they hear someone talking in Hungarian!

ArgentineTangoRadio.com backup stream, milonga stream down

For several years I had a covert TTVTTM tanda-structured milonga stream running under ArgentineTangoRadio.com, and last March I pointed my public backup player to it, with the intention to provide milonga music for home-constrained couples, until real milongas reopen. This milonga stream was quite successful, and I received many fan emails from all around the world for it. Thanks for listening and taking the time to show appreciation!

Well, with a few exceptions around the world (Russia, China etc.) real milongas are yet to reopen, but recent changes in how my backup server is managed and paid for forced me to rethink whether it is managable to continue with double servers. Unfortunately I needed to conclude that at the recent levels of patronage received by the radio I can no longer maintain a backup server separate from the main radio stream. So, until an unspecified time in the future, the milonga stream is going to be closed and the backup player on the main site is going to serve the main, non-tanda-structured stream as well. Sorry, but thanks for understanding.

But hey, the main stream is still awesome, isn't it? :)

Celebrating 100 years of Argentine Radio today

Although the history of broadcasting goes back to the end of the 19th century, with early pioneers, such as the Hungarian Telefon Hírmondó (1893-1944) leading the way, one of the first commercial radio broadcasts in the world took place 100 years ago today, in Argentina. On the 27th of August, 1920, the Buenos Aires based Radio Argentina Society made its first radio broadcast, a live performance of Wagner's Parsifal:

This is only the fifth year that Argentine Tango Radio, afaik the most listened-to online tango radio, is humming along the wires. It has been a bumpy few years, but I hope not many of the roadblocks were noticed by our listeners. With survivors' pride, we raise our hat today to celebrate the history of radio broadcasting in Argentina and in the world!

The world's first Live Virtual Video Milonga - experiences

Yesterday I hosted the worlds' first Live Virtual Video Milonga. Thanks for everyone who joined and many thanks for all of those who helped spreading the word (especially Endre Szeghalmi, co-organizer of the event, and also Gyuri Horvath and Winston Veerender)!

Around four hundred people joined in at various times, but the maximal concurrent attendance was around 100. Given that only five hours passed between the announcement and the opening of the virtual gates, this was a great turnout. And we certainly had a lot of fun!

The majority of attendees were passive listeners, but a good number of dancers turned on their cameras, which made it much more enjoyable! I now think 4 hours was maybe too long for such an event, it spread out the attendance, and only few couples could dance through the whole thing, given that there was no opportunity for partner change. (Although we don't know - again, many joined without cameras!)

Hosting it was super exhausting, keeping the music running, chatting with people (both in public and private), changing the spotlighted video feed for entertainment, etc. required non-stop attention. Some of these tasks should be delegated to others. But I enjoyed it tremendously!

Join (hopefully) hundreds of tangueros and tangueras tonight in a Live Virtual Video Milonga, hosted on Zoom! Turn on your camera, dance in front of it to the online edition of Milonga Jueves from Budapest, watch everyone else doing the same, or just watch and chat with dancers from all around the world! milonga.ArgentineTangoRadio.com - until real milongas reopen!

Due to the closure of real milongas I decided to make public my so-far hidden milonga playlist stream: you can listen to it either through the small red "backup stream" play button on the Argentine Tango Radio main page. The milonga playlist stream is semi-randomized (the selection of pre-programmed tandas is random, but bound to a scheme conjured for consecutive ~3.5 hour long milongas), and varied enough to not repeat any songs for at least 10 hours. For many reasons it can not substitute a real tango DJ - i.e. not knowing the audience the selection errs on the rhythmical side, the song selection is fairly conservative, etc. etc. - but when you want to have a mini-milonga with your significant other in your house quarantine, it will do.

Only a few friends knew about the existence of this milonga playlist stream. I created it two years ago to facilitate open air milonga flashmobs (where couples could listen to the music on their phones with a shared headset), but never publicized it.. [EDITED CONTENT] but, until the real milongas can't open up again, I reassigned my backup server to this stream.

If you just want to listen to danceable tango music, please, continue to do so on the usual Argentine Tango Radio stream; the musical selection is much more varied, and it does make a difference for me. Thanks.

How many people dance tango worldwide?

I estimate that no more than 300,000 people dance tango worldwide.

Let me share my method of estimation for the total number of tango dancers (from which my criteria of being a "tango dancer" - used only for the purpose of this calculation - also becomes clear). I started with trying to figure out the approximate number of milongas worldwide. Fortunately there is a long-established website dedicated to collecting all milongas worldwide called milongas-in.com. At the time of this writing there are 2,419 milongas listed on this site, the majority as a regular weekly milonga. Unfortunately the quality of listings is not even and/or not very up-to-date, so for large cities known for their vivid tango life I did some manual search and correction using local milonga calendars. For example for larger cities in Argentina and Uruguay milongas-in.com seems to be off with a factor of ~4, with the exception of Buenos Aires where it is off with a factor of 8. In larger tango centers in Europe (Berlin, Istanbul etc) milongas-in.com seems to be off with a factor of ~1.5-2, while in smaller tango cities / countries it even seems to overestimate the number of weekly milongas. I suspect the difference in listing quality is related to the intensity of tango life in given destinations (in places with less intense tango life organizers may pay more attention to be listed and/or there is a higher turnover rate for milongas resulting in more defunct milongas staying listed on the site). So I decided to adjust the milongas-in.com numbers with a factor of 8 for Spanish speaking countries and with a factor of 2 for all other locations, plus added an upper estimation for the number of tango festivals / marathons / encuentros / camps per week (equating each of them with 5 milongas, or, as we will later on see, 250 people). As a result we get that there are ~6000 milongas per week worldwide.

If we further guesstimate that an average milonga is attended by ~50 people (which I believe to be an upper estimate for the average attendance) and assume that on average a dancer attends a milonga once a week (another estimation resulting in an exaggerated figure, for the harder core tangueros/tangueras who make up the significant portion of the milonga population dance more frequently, while those who dance less than, say, once a month, may not quite qualify as a "tango dancer") we arrive at the final upper estimation of 300,000 people dancing tango worldwide.

Given the upper estimations the true number of active tango dancers is probably less than 300,000, maybe significantly so. On the other hand there is clearly more interest in Argentine tango dance music than what is apparent from milonga attendance. For instance Argentine Tango Radio has ~500,000 listeners from ~70,000 unique IP addresses a month; if these 70,000 listeners were all drawn from the pool of active tango dancers that would mean that roughly every 4th active tango dancer is also a listener of the radio. While this would be quite nice, I believe it is rather the case that there is a large number of people who like to listen to tango dance music but is not (yet?) attending milongas.

Another number indicating a much larger interest in tango comes from Youtube statistics. For instance the video for the Argentine tango flash mob I organized also picks up ~300,000 viewers each month. I doubt that all active tango dancers watch this video once a month; rather, there is a large untapped potential of people who are interested in Argentine tango but don't get to the point of attending milongas.

New language localizations & more..

Argentine Tango Radio is now available in four additional language localizations: Greek, Italian, Serbian, and Turkish! Thanks to the translation help of Nina, Giulia, Maša, Anastasija, and Gizem, the number of language localizations is in the double digits now!

I also implemented some long-overdue under-the-hood changes - replaced some broken embedded objects and moved the site under https. For the latter I needed to enlist the help of Cloudflare, which has its up-and-downsides; I still don't know what to do with certain broken link-redirections and site certificate issues, but hopefully can get around them soon.

Although I recently moved to London, ArgentineTangoRadio.com keeps humming and in December 2018 more than half million tango lovers tuned in!

During the third full calendar year of Argentine Tango Radio we reached almost five million listeners, 60 percent increase compared with 2017. The podcast version of "Danceable Tangos of the Year", our weakly programming on the radio, is still the most listened content related to Argentine tango on the internet archive, standing at more than 100,000 listenings.

Although I still spend more on the radio than I receive from advertisements and donations, let me take a moment to thank the generous 2018 patronage of the Tűz family and Derek Smith, as well as that of Edward Johnson, Endre Szeghalmi, Hartmut Röhrich, Markus Frees, Mira Vos, Robert Arthur, Róbert Rózsa-Fekete, Terry Bauch, and Toni Hanner.

Argentine Tango Radio: 2017 in numbers

During 2017, the second full calendar year of ArgentineTangoRadio.com, we reached more than three million tango lovers, triple of our audience for 2016. The podcast version of "Danceable Tangos of the Year", our weakly programming on the radio, became the most listened content related to argentine tango on the internet archive, adding close to 60,000 listenings to its airing on the radio. I say this is nice!

The growth of the radio throughout the year has been uneven, though; in the last months the upwards trend turned around, most likely due to technical problems that caused occasional cuts in the stream. I apologize to all listeners for the inconveniences; I try to do my best to firefight the technical issues (many thanks for everyone who notifies me in email when they occur!). To put it simply my servers can not support more listeners without showing symptoms of overload; I have migrated to different servers in October to better tackle these problems, but unfortunately I can't afford to upscale the bandwidth (even accounting for some yet-to-be-fulfilled income from advertisement the financial balance of the radio project is still very much in the red). There is also a looming change in how copyright issues can be properly handled which may force me to reevaluate a few things in how/where the radio can stream content. We do plan to keep on going, though!

Argentine Tango Radio stats, 2017 July

I haven't posted stats for ArgetineTangoRadio.com for a while now, here they are for July 2017: listenership for summer months stabilized around 300,000 listeners (roughly 10,000 listeners per day). Also, by around the end of July, the radio served its 3 millionth listener in its year-and-a-half existence.

In addition the program Danceable Tangos of the Year have been accessed over 50,000 times. I hear there are some weekly practicas where they put in the episodes one-by-one as practice music!

Tango dissection for a musicality class

I was recently asked to teach a "musicality class" where I talked about the structure of different tangos, focusing on the placement of the vocal sections, the dominant violin sections, and their relationship to "softer dancing".

In preparation I spent a fair bit of time dissecting the six tangos I used in the class as illustrations. Nice online tango radio - but is it legal?

From a technological point of view creating an online radio is not too difficult. Times when it was necessary to set up a streaming server in your own basement are gone; nowadays there exist online streaming services that provide, in exchange for a monthly fee (which depends on the number of listeners, on the stream quality etc), a streaming server, in some cases even with auto-dj features. You just pay the monthly fee, upload the music to the server, press "start", and the server transmits a random selection of your uploaded music to any listener who tunes in on the radio's homepage.

But this technological ease is very misleading and most online streaming service providers are essentially honeypot organizations. Any transmission of music requires the owner of the radio station to obtain various types of broadcasting right coverages and follow strict transmission rules to render the transmission legal and the details get quite complicated quite quickly. It is important to understand that, with the exception of some circumstances (such as unwillingness to act in a timely manner upon receiving a DMCA notice) the aforementioned streaming server providers enjoy immunity from a copyright lawsuit: it is the owner of the radio station, and not the streaming service provider, who bears the legal responsibility.

Since the entire business model of said streaming providers depends on large number of unconcerned enthusiasts unwittingly signing up for their services, they tend to be quite quiet about these legal "issues". To get absolved of responsibility they mention in the fine print of their terms of service that the owner of the radio station is solely responsible for royalties and other broadcasting legal costs, and they maybe have a small link on the bottom of their page half-heartedly explaining the situation, but otherwise they tend to hide this fact from their users. Not surprisingly: were users aware of their legal responsibilities and the complications involved, most of them would not sign up for the service in the first place. The streaming providers can always waive their hand and say that their service was intended to serve pure talk radios (only talking heads, no music whatsoever), which is about the only case in which royalty payments are not necessary. Some of the providers follow even more disgusting practices: they offer monthly packages that cover for some of the necessary broadcasting rights but they fail to make it explicit to their users that these coverages in themselves are not sufficient for maintaining legal standing, creating the false appearance that the user, by paying for such monthly package, need not worry about other legal aspects of radio operation.

You may shrug shoulders and choose to not worry about copyright but I suggest you to think twice. Any radio owner who is running an unlicensed radio risks exorbitant penalties and costly lawsuits. To quote from the 2017 guidelines of the FCC:

The Commission considers unauthorized broadcast operation to be a serious matter. Presently, the maximum penalty for operating an unlicensed or "pirate" broadcast station [...] is set at $10,000 for a single violation or a single day of operation [...] Adjustments may be made upwards or downwards depending on the circumstances involved. [...] There are also criminal penalties (fine and/or imprisonment) for "willfully and knowingly" operating a radio station without a license.

Needless to say it is technologically quite easy for a licensing body to employ listening bots that tune into any online radio stream and save the transmission for later inspection, which may occur years after the fact. (I've just read in the Federal Register that the Copyright Royalty Board served a "Notice of Intent To Audit" in January 2017 for the operation year 2013 of several online radio operators. We don't yet know what is going to be the end result of their investigation, but it does not seem to be wise to me to run the risk of operating a non-fully covered online radio.) Again, the technological ease with which one can create an online radio is quite misleading; the same technological ease also applies to monitoring the copyright compliance of these online radios.

Below I'll call attention to some of the difficulties arising for online radio operators in a question-answer form. I should stress that this is a non-exhaustive list and none of what I'm writing here should be construed as legal advice. I spend a large chunk of time getting informed and up-to-date about the changing legal environment, and I have consulted experts in the past regarding my own radio operation, but if you plan to open an online radio, please find your own lawyer for doing so. Be warned however that changes are implemented every year and one needs to stay up-to-date to conform to the law.

(1) Do I need to pay for licensing bodies for playing music? Oh boy, yes you do.

How much and to whom depends on the jurisdiction that applies to the online radio as well as on the countries in which the radio can be listened from (whose listeners are not prevented by geofencing from tuning in to the online stream). There are also multiple aspects of copyright and broadcasting rights which need coverage. Separate royalties are due to composers of the music, to the original artists who performed the music, if the actual recording is a cover then to the cover artist, to the record labels, in some cases to the organization who transferred the music (say, from an original shellac to mp3), etc. This is not a joke.

In most countries "fortunately" one does not need to contact all the authors individually but there are rights organizations which collect the fees on their behalf. Typically there are two or three such organizations one needs to be in touch with. For instance (to the best of my knowledge) for a radio operating from the U.K. (and transmitting to the limited set of countries with which PPL has cross-licensing agreement) an online radio needs to pay royalties to at least two organizations, the PRS and the PPL. The PRS fee is flat but the PPL fee scales with the number of song transmissions the radio makes. The PPL fee might seem to be deceptively small but with a large number of listeners and songs played it adds up quickly: had my radio been licensed under the U.K. scheme and had it had the same number of listeners through a year as it had in January 2017 the PPL fee alone would come out to be around 17,000 EUR. (2) Can I simply play a random selection of music? No, at least not in case your stream can be listened to in major Western countries. Different countries have different regulations, but many of them have several rules that apply to musical programming. For instance according to US regulations online radios that can be accessed in the US

can transmit no more than 4 musical pieces by the same featured artist to the same listener within a 3 hours period (and can transmit no more than 3 by the same featured artist consecutively within a 3 hours period),
can transmit no more than 3 musical pieces from the same album to the same listener within a 3 hours period (and can transmit no more than 2 of those musical pieces consecutively within a 3 hours period),

etc. These transmission rules clearly forbid using a pure random selector unless it is programmed to meet all of the required criteria. (Of course there exist software packages specifically designed for radio operators that follow these rules, but be prepared to pay a hefty license fee for their usage.)

To talk home to the tango community, these transmission rules also forbid playing a typical "tanda" of four consecutive songs from the same tango orchestra. (There are some workarounds, but one needs to be careful.) It should also be clear that if the average length of a song is 2.5 minutes then a music-only online radio essentially needs to play music from at least 18 different orchestras every 45 minutes! Everyone who is familiar with the danceable tango repertoire will recognize that obeying this rule - while providing a balanced selection of music without overplaying certain songs from orchestras that produced relatively few good songs - poses challenges. Those tango radios that try to maintain legality and follow these transmission rules are automatically at a quality disadvantage compared with those tango radios that ignore them.

(3) Are we done? Or is there something else? Unfortunately there are many other difficulties as well. One example is that an online radio is supposed to employ reasonable technological measures against unlicensed use of its services, such as downloading individual songs from its stream or streaming to territories for which it doesn't have coverage for broadcasting and neighboring rights. What counts as a "reasonable technological measure" changes with time; in the past crossfading of songs and geofencing seems to have been sufficient, but recently there are new requirements i.e. about confuscating stream metadata to disallow automated taggers. An online radio owner needs to keep an eye out for these developments on the appropriate forums and diligently implement them, and it's frankly somewhat time consuming to do so.

So, nice online tango radio - but is it legal? I took a quick look at the streams and at the streaming solutions of some of the better known and/or newest online tango radios. I don't want to point direct fingers so let me just refer to them as the Hungarian, the French, the German, the Greek, and the Polish tango radios. According to my best knowledge and judgement (and I may be wrong and am willing to change this post immediately upon receipt of convincing evidence to the contrary) as of April 2017 I find that, among the three legal requirement mentioned above, only the Hungarian and the French tango radio satisfies all (1), (2), and (3). I believe that the German tango radio does satisfy (1) and probably also (3) but not (2). I also believe that the Greek and the Polish tango radios essentially fell into the aforementioned honeypot of streaming service providers and they don't satisfy any of (1), (2) or (3). I may be wrong, but given the legal risks mentioned before I'd advise their owners to get more informed about the legal situation in jurisdictions that apply to them.

The question whether a Golden Age tango recording is in the public domain in the United States seems to depend on a particular historical question to which I don't know the answer (but I would love to, so please help if you can!): how much time did it pass between first distribution of the recording in Argentina and the first distribution (or at least the first offering for distribution) of the recording in the United States? If for a recording the answer is "30 days or less" then it is very likely that the recording is in the public domain in the US.

Let me explain for those interested in the intricacies of copyright (while stressing that none of what is said below should be construed as legal advice). Until the advent of the current US law, the Copyright Act of 1976, copyright in the US was regulated by The Copyright Act of 1909. According to the 1909 Act copyright lasted for 28 years after publication unless it was renewed in its last year for a second copyright term. To quote from Circular 15a of the United States Copyright Office:

Under the 1909 act, federal copyright was secured on the date a work was published or, for unpublished works, on the date of registration. A copyright lasted for a first term of 28 years from the date it was secured. The copyright was eligible for renewal during the final, that is, 28th year, of the first term. If renewed, the copyright was extended for a second, or renewal, term of 28 years. If it was not renewed, the copyright expired at the end of the first 28-year term, and the work is no longer protected by copyright.

If copyright on the work was not renewed in its last year then the work entered to the public domain. The 1976 Copyright Act substantially (and retroactively) increased the length of the 28 year renewal term however it did not change the copyright status of those works that already entered to the public domain due to the lack of request for renewal.

A request for renewal was supposed to have been submitted to the Copyright Office and all submitted renewal requests were recorded in the Catalog of Copyright Entries. Thanks to the hard work of government transparency activists all of these Catalogs have been scanned, text-recognized, and uploaded to the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/copyrightrecords . If there is no record for the renewal request among the Catalog entries 28 years after the first publication of a work, copyright expired on it in the end of the 28 year period and the work entered to public domain.

I've checked around a dozen better known Golden Age Argentine tango recordings in the Catalog and it appears that renewal requests have not been submitted for them at the appropriate time; on this basis I believe the same is probably the case with the overwhelming majority of Argentine tango recordings. Take for example the vals Pobre flor by the orchestra of Alfredo de Angelis. It was recorded and published in 1946 by Odeon Records. Suppose its publication date was two months after its recording date, on the 09/01/1946; then copyright on it in the US lasted until 09/01/1974 unless a renewal request was submitted sometime between 09/01/1973 and 09/01/1974. I have checked the Catalog of Copyright Entries for 1973, 1974, 1975 and found no renewal requests for the song (or for any other works of Alfredo de Angelis for that matter). Sans the renewal request Pobre flor entered to public domain in the US 28 years after its publication and stayed there at least until January 1, 1996.

Why January 1, 1996? Well, because with that effective date the Uruguay Round Agreements Act of 1994 retroactively restored copyright to certain foreign works whose US copyright protection had been lost because of noncompliance with formalities of US law, in particular noncompliance with failure to renew. Foreign works that met certain criteria automatically got treated as if their copyright holders had submitted a renewal request, and since the renewal terms got extended to ridiculously long periods (typically the full term became the last author's death plus 70 years), eligible Golden Age tango recordings are still most likely within their extended copyright term.

Is this the end of story? Not quite. The Uruguay Round Agreements Act only applied to works that met four criteria (see Circular 38b of the United States Copyright Office). The first three of these are almost certainly met by Golden Age Argentine tangos, however the last criteria is curious:

4. If published, the work must have been first published in an eligible country and not published in the United States during the 30-day period following its first publication in the eligible country.

Now the US copyright law defines "publication" as:

the distribution of copies or phonorecords of a work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending. The offering to distribute copies or phonorecords to a group of people for purposes of further distribution, public performance, or public display, constitutes publication.

In other words, if in our example Odeon Records published Pobre flor in Argentina in 09/01/1946, but did only so much as to offer it to a US entity for the purpose of distribution between 09/01/1946 and 09/30/1946, then Pobre flor does not meet the criteria set out by the Uruguay Round Agreements Act, and hence it is still in the public domain in the US!

To me it sounds quite plausible that at least an offer for sale in the US was made within a short amount of time given the already global nature of music distribution (i.e. the originally German Odeon Records became part, through multiple acquisitions and merger, of the London based EMI in 1931 which had a well established distribution network in the US). I do not know the answer for sure, however, and I have no access to historical documents describing the publication practices of recording companies at the time to verify it beyond doubt. 30 days does seem to be a short period of time, so we would really need some expert looking into this issue. Apart from expert knowledge about publishing practices other forms of evidence would also be interesting, i.e. does someone know of periodicals of the time that mentioned new tango releases (and offered them for sale) that are known to have been distributed in the US? (I.e. "Caras y Caretas" or similar publications could be consulted - but were they available in the US in a timely manner? (Thanks Bernhardt for the suggestion.))

If Pobre flor were in the public domain in the US, one would be free to use one's own shellac-to-mp3 transfer of it under a Youtube video without needing to worry about copyright claims made by The Orchard Music or anyone else, Youtube being a US incorporated company. (This would be so despite the song potentially being protected by copyright in countries other than the US, for instance in Argentina; Youtube might then be compelled to impose viewing restrictions on the video in Argentina, but not in the US. I'm emphasizing "own transfer" because the transfer from shellac itself can create a copyright for the person who makes the transfer depending on how much added value is created in the course of the transfer, resulting in this aspect of the newly created mp3 file falling under copyright protection.)

Long story short: I'm looking for historians' input here who are familiar with the marketing and distribution practices of Odeon, RCA etc. and could comment on the issue of time passing between distribution in Argentina and (offerings of) distribution in the US. If you know someone (who might know someone) who could know these things and could back it up with credible historical evidence, please put us in touch!

Argentine Tango Radio had 232,000 listeners in January, 2017. Here is a growth chart starting with the launch of the radio in 2015:

Audience growth is quite consistent; I don't know where the ceiling is (I venture that as data packages get cheaper more people will choose to stream music online), but directory listings of all shoutcast compatible streams indicate that Argentine Tango Radio is the largest online-only tango radio worldwide for a while now, so growth can only come from an increasing number of people listening tango music online.

Calculation of number of listeners is based on access count and hence it's a lower estimate. One "listener" may be several people - I know of several practicas, tango classes, and cafes that stream Argentine Tango Radio. All these show up as single listeners in the tally, even though multiple people listen to them.

From an advertising perspective a more important piece of information may be the total listening hours, which was 67,000 hours for January. Here is a historical growth chart for total listening hours:

A year-long tango listening project

A year-long tango listening project: "Danceable Tangos of the Year" has 52 episodes, so you can get a fairly good sense of Argentine tango music between 1927 and 2016 by spending one hour per week listening to the series. It took me a year to complete all episodes. The series originally aired on ArgentineTangoRadio.com in 2016 as a weekly special programming aiming to showcase examples of danceable Argentine tangos, valses and milongas. Thus "Danceable Tangos of the Year" is a year-long project in multiple senses of the word.

During 2016, the first full year of ArgentineTangoRadio.com, we reached slightly more than one million tango lovers, who on average listened to the stream for around half hour per listening. Audience size have skyrocketed in recent months: in December 2016 alone we had more than 175,000 listeners. (Previous stats and some lamentation about costs can be read here.)

“Danceable Tangos of the Year” also recently concluded with Episode 52; the podcast version received an additional 18,000 listening from those who missed the online show. This year I started to rebroadcast the episodes starting with Episode 01 on the 2nd of January; it will air on Mondays and Wednesdays, as usual.

Episode 52 covers the years 1976-2016. We start the episode with one of Astor Piazzolla's most recognizable tango nuevo piece, "Libertango"; as "demonstrated" in the movie Tango Lesson, it is "danceable", at least in circumstances where a follower is courted by three leaders. To cover the many great tango nuevo, alternative tango, and electronic tango formations of the past four decades would take way more than an hour; instead, our last episode follows the spirit of the series and cherry-picks from danceable tangos of more traditional style, but perhaps lesser known formations.

I hope you enjoyed our journey to explore 90 years of Argentine tango music. TL;DR answer for three ways of understanding the question, based on the statistics of "Danceable Tangos of the Year," a weekly programming of ArgentineTangoRadio.com :

(A) Whose Argentine tango orchestras recorded the largest number of danceable tangos?

These answers are, as with all questions of taste, ultimately subjective. What may render them somewhat interesting is that they are based on a statistics whose collection was prima facie independent of the desire to produce such "top 3" lists. Below I explain the details and some of the significant qualifications.

Background info (skip this section to go directly to the stats). The ranking is based on recordings selected for "Danceable Tangos of the Year", a weakly programming which airs every Monday and Wednesday on Argentine Tango Radio (listen: ArgentineTangoRadio.com ; podcast version: Danceable Tangos of the Year Podcasts ). The first episode, covering the years 1927-1928, aired in the beginning of January 2016 and the series will conclude with its 52nd episode, covering the years 1975-2016, at the end of this year. Each episode runs for roughly 55 minutes and hence could only feature up to 17-20 songs. This limitation on length forced selectivity, that is, only a portion of danceable tangos recorded in a given year were included. Since not all years spawned the same number of danceable tangos, I grouped some years together in a single episode and I also spent several episodes covering a single year, with the overall aim of keeping the portion of selected tangos to all danceable tangos roughly the same for each year. The selectivity and pre-assigned grouping are major potential sources of bias; looking back to how the process worked out, I'm mostly comfortable with how I pre-grouped the years together in episodes, with some exceptions.

On the selection procedure: for each episode I took the time (!) to listen to most of the tangos, valses, and milongas I have in my musical collection for the relevant years. (Note: I have near-complete discographies for most of the major orchestras and fairly extensive collections for other orchestras that are played in milongas, festivals, and marathons). I then narrowed down the list in several successive stages. During this process I focused on one primary and three secondary qualities. The primary quality was danceability in a regular milonga environment, at least how I understand that after many years of dancing and DJing. The secondary qualities were the quality of the recordings; variety; and familiarity. Thus I decided to skip some great songs that I only have in quality that does not bode well with radio listening; I sometimes included songs to feature an orchestra or a tendency which would otherwise not be included; and I skipped great danceable songs that I know to be unfamiliar to most dancers (which in turn alters danceability for them). Thus these secondary qualities induce deviation from the primer goal of danceability, however I feel that, with the possible exception of quality of the available recordings, they didn't alter the results more than 20%-25%. In the end I needed to make a painful judgement call anyway, since for most years there were many more danceable tangos that I'd wanted to have included than I could due to length limitations. Finally, for each episode I tried to choose the "best" - most loved, recognized, innovative, or unique - song to start the episode with. This latter is probably the most subjective choice of all.

It should be clear from the selection procedure but let me emphasize it explicitly: the numbers and ratios below do not reflect solely on the numbers and ratios of danceable tangos of a given orchestra, but also on the competition with other tango orchestras that recorded in the same period. Hence they can at best be taken as lower estimates of the absolute numbers and ratios of danceable tangos of a given orchestra (with respect to my subjective criterion of danceability).

Detailed stats. Overall 921 songs got selected for "Danceable Tangos of the Year", 32% of which are instrumental and 68% features a singer. By genre: 78% tango, 14% vals, 7% milonga, and less than 1% other genre; I collectively (and admittedly loosely) refer to all of these as "tangos" for the stats. Note that I write "whose" orchestras as opposed to "which" orchestras since I'm lumping together different orchestras which had the same orchestra leader (notably the orchestra(s) of Francisco Canaro with Quinteto Don Pancho and Quinteto Pirincho, as well as the sexteto and the orchestra of Carlos Di Sarli; OTV and Adolfo Carabelli were separately counted). With this remark 68 different orchestras were covered overall, of which only 18 orchestras had at least 10 works that made it to the mix. I'll display the detailed all stats for these 18 orchestras only (omitted but close runner-ups include Ángel D’Agostino, Ricardo Malerba, and Adolfo Carabelli).

With these in mind, let's get to the details.

(A) Whose Argentine tango orchestras recorded the largest number of danceable tangos?

Well, here are the numbers, clustered into six groups:

Juan D'Arienzo is king (and not just that of the rhythm), Francisco Canaro is second, and Carlos Di Sarli, Aníbal Troilo, and Rodolfo Biagi comes third.

Notes: the total number of works is gathered mostly from discographies by Bernhard Gehberger, Christoph Lanner, and Gabriel Valiente. If I needed to pick two orchestras that I felt were most unfairly underrepresented (given the selection criteria that I set to myself above), one would be that of Francisco Canaro (!) and the other would be that of Carlos Di Sarli. For Canaro, the number of good danceable tangos were simply too much compared with the frequency that his works are played in milongas; also, many of the omitted works are good, but not great. For Di Sarli I mostly wanted to avoid over-repetition of his instrumental works, many of which he recorded over and over again, in at least three major waves.

(B) Whose Argentine tango orchestras recorded the largest share of danceable tangos (compared to all of the given orchestra's own recordings)?

The numbers are already displayed in the previous table, but let me cluster them here separately:

Rodolfo Biagi finishes on the top: more than one third of his total number of works got selected - and remember, these numbers can be taken at best as lower estimates! Pedro Laurenz comes as second - this came as a bit of a surprise, but I was not fully aware of the fact that he only recorded 80-or-so tangos overall. It may be pure coincidence, but I found it fascinating that the 1-in-7 ratio holds for most of the other great tango orchestras: Carlos Di Sarli, Juan D'Arienzo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Aníbal Troilo, Ricardo Tanturi, Edgardo Donato, and Lucio Demare. As if all of their Sunday recordings turned out to be amazing! Carlos Di Sarli is bit ahead of this pack, especially given the underrepresentation that I remarked above.

Note that while Francisco Canaro came out second in terms of the absolute number of selected danceable tangos, he is only second-to-last in terms of the ratio of selected danceable tangos to his total number of works, at a mere 3% - no big surprise if we remind ourselves that he made almost 3800 recordings overall! I'd also want to note that I have less than fourth of Federico Domingo's 162 recordings; among those that I know of, he came in pretty strongly, and so I wouldn't be surprised of him moving up significantly on this list if I had the chance to listen to all of his recordings.

(C) Whose Argentine tango orchestras recorded the largest number of "best" danceable tangos?

As explained above, this is clearly the most subjective of all categories, based on "first songs" that I chose for starting the episodes. Here we go:

Juan D'Arienzo is the first again, followed by a dead heat between Aníbal Troilo, Carlos Di Sarli, and Osvaldo Pugliese. So, unintentionally, the great four tango orchestras, compulsorily mentioned in the preface of every book on tango, came out on top. Francisco Canaro is a close third, and Miguel Caló, Orquesta Típica Victor, and Edgardo Donato are also close runner-ups.

Note: no songs from Rodolfo Biagi made it to this list, despite him finishing strongly in the previous two categories. This may be by pure chance, but I indeed tend to feel that while he has the largest share of "A" recordings, in terms of "A+", he is lagging behind other orchestras. I do play Biagi in most of my milongas, but I don't think of him as being as unavoidable as D'Arienzo, Troilo, or Di Sarli. I might change my mind when Japanese releases of Biagi finally surface; I refuse to believe that the thin-sounding available recordings are best representation of how his orchestra could have sounded.

Again, this is just a play with numbers and tastes - hope that I was not the only one having fun with it. I'd be curious of similar rankings by other DJs and dancers, I'd love to hear back from you! Alternatively, let the shit-storm begin - Caló and Fresedo fans, nail me to the cross!

Episode 09 is Part 1/3 covering the year 1937. We start with "Invierno", one of the most popular Canaro-Maida songs from the second half of the year (I find the shocking similarity of the melodic theme of "Invierno" to the then-popular 1936 Hungarian tango that serves as the main signal of this episode series quite ironic, especially in the light that Francisco Canaro was the main advocate of musical copyright protection in Argentina at the time and played a pivotal role in founding SADAIC in 1936). Besides Canaro we display instrumental valses and milongas from Juan D'Arienzo and Edgardo Donato, and a handful of more lyrical pieces from Osvaldo Fresedo with Roberto Ray. We close the episode with a rare gem from Enrique Santos Discépolo, featuring the singer Tania.

We finish this last episode on 1936 with an example of a European style tango from the continent, a Russian rendering of a beautiful Polish tango, "Weary sun".
