Recap of the Behond Meaningful Relationships – Relationshipful Meaning chaburos:

The threes: Torah, Avodah, Gemillus Chassadim — through the eyes of the Maharal and the Gra

Three worlds — this one, shamayim, the world we build in our minds

Three aspects of the soul — nefesh, neshamah, ruach

Three categories of relationship: with others (in this world), with Hashem, with my own soul and personal development

Three crowns: Malkhus, Kehunah, Torah paralleling….

Three crowned keilim: shulchan, mizbeiach haqetores, aron

The fourth crown — Keser Sheim Tov and the non-crown of the rising flames of the Menorah. Our relationship to ourselves as an area of work (aron) and as the means to getting any work done (menorah).

What is the parallel — is Malkhus perfection in this world (Gra), or the means to bringing Shamayim down (Maharal)? Is Kehunah perfecting our relationship with Hashem (Gra) or the raising up this world (Maharal)?

Consequent debate on where kin’ah, ta’avah and the pursuit of kavod come from.

Is “the middle” about synthesis or dialectic? R Dessler’s “battlefront” of free will.

Three uncrowned keilim – not discussed by Chazal, but do they parallel the three worlds?

Olam haYedidus: Rav Wolbe (two versions)

The world of Torah is a world of Yedidus – as Hillel tells the prospective geir

Yedidus comes from knowing that Hashem created everything, and therefore everything has a role and a value.

So our yedidus with Hashem is first, then areivus with Jews as fellow ovdei hashem, then our shalom with other people, followed by our responsibility or everything else.

The focus on Yedidus stands in contrast to the role fear plays in psychological theories.

The Torah is practical about it, thus the focus on halakhah.

But Chassidus and Mussar emerged to remind people what the practice is for.

Evil is rooted in cruelty – akhzariyus = akh + zariyus – literally: pure alienation.

Personal alienation from eachother

Wars: nation alienated from nation

Alienation from G-d

Alienation from self – which is why anger is like avodah zarah

We do not uproot bad middos, we channel them constructively. (R Wolbe modernizes “Someone born under the sign of Mars” should become a shocheit or mohel.)

The soul has a conscious, a subconscious, and a superconscious

Note the same three aspects of the soul – deciding self / ego, a higher calling connected to shamayim and a lower calling to make sure physical needs are met for survival.

Mitzvos relate directly to building yedidus: Milah – Yedid mibeten; Shabbos “mah yedidus menuchaseikh”, tefillin as an os, etc…

Qunterus haChessed: Rav Dessler

The Will to Give vs the Will to Take

Business should be about providing value to the other

“Greater is the one who enjoys the product of his own labor mmore than a yarei Shamayim. (Berakhos 8a)

Receiving with hakaras hatov isn’t taking…

Because the Will to Take is self-oriented, a drawing inward motion

This is also why one is never satisfied: as soon as we have it, it’s not an external thing to draw in to me

Giving is the source of love, not the other way around

When we invest in others, our self-love gets extended to them

This is also the difference between love and lust

Aspiration is a focus on what I don’t have – so it is more a death than a life

The only thing you can really fully possess anyway is intellectual

Two tools to build the Will to Give: imagination, and habituation in giving

One to reduce the Will to Take: stop the downward spiral yourself rather than pursue every desire.

Hakaras haTov and Giving is the whole reason why people share a world

The Will to Take is our biggest obstacle in perceiving Truth

… and therefore to Avodas Hashem

Introduction to Shaarei Yosher…

Introduction to Shaarei Yosher – an outline

Thesis: The purpose of creation and of giving us the Torah was

So that we of benefit to others

and our greatest desire is to benefit others

in imitation of the Creator

This is the mitzvah of “qedoshim tihyu ki Qadosh Ani”

“qedushah” means consecration to a higher calling, which to R Shimon means being of benefit to others

When the Sifra and the Ramban say the mitzvah is “perushim tihyu” they cannot be defining qedushah as perishus, since “ki Qadosh Ani” can’t be referring to Hashem separating Himself from something.

Rather, the mitzvah of becoming holy involved separation from other causes and goals

But people need self-care, rest and relaxation. We aren’t Him. As the Sifra concludes “Qedushasi lemaalah miqedushaskhem”.

As long as we do this in the context of being more able to fulfil that higher calling, addressing personal needs can be holy. Whether physical needs, the need to have enjoyment…

… or spiritual needs.

Antithesis: Hashem doesn’t want deprivation, self-love is built too deeply into the human

As Rabbi Aqiva says in the case of one canteen in the desert “chayekha qodmin”

It avoids the boshes lemeqablin (as the Ramchal and the Qabbalists say)

We wouldn’t have a preference for what we ourselves make. And we would create less.

Even though self-love grows into selfishness, the source of so many evils

And even though the preference for what we made ourselves pushes us to grab credit, and therefore is a drive against gratitude.

And a lack of gratitude for what Hashem provides can lead to apostacy.

“Yismach Moshe bematenas chelqo, ki eved ne’eman qarasa lo”

Taking credit for what we learn in secular studies must be offset with the awareness of Divine Wisdom it brings

Credit for what Torah we learn should be mitigated by the Torah honing our middos away from taking credit.

Synthesis: expanding the self

From body to body-and-soul to including spouse, family, friends, community, Jewish People, humanity, and the complete soul – all of creation.

Hillel: “Im ein ani li, mi li? Ukeshe’ani le’atzmi ma ani?” Narrow self vs. broader me-and-mine.

The measure of a soul is the scope of one’s “ani”.

Not getting one’s self-worth through the limelight (tzeni’us) but through being a critical part of a larger body or engine.

Sharing: “Not or oneself, but for one’s own”

Nachum ish Gamzu failed a poor person, and therefore didn’t see value in having limbs. How do we relate to that?

What we own was given to us for the greater ani.

Aseir te’aseir: A caretaker appointed for a small amount who does a good job is more likely to be charged with caring or more in the future.

A Life of Growth

Moshe broke the first luchos because a generation capable of the eigel shouldn’t have access to an unforgettable Torah

Moshe turned Torah into a process. The second Luchos were carved by a person holding a Torah that can only be absorbed by someone who “carved” themselves with yir’as Hashem (as in reishis chokhmah…) and Middos.

Moshe became wealthy by selling the bits carved of the luchos. And we become rich as a side-effect of working on ourselves.

Synthesis: How do we merge “so that our greatest desire should be to be of benefit to others” with our self-love?

Highlishts:

The purpose of life is to be of benefit to others

and to be the kind of people whose greatest desire is to provide that benefit

and this is how we emulate Hashem and partner with Him.

This is also what “be holy for I am Holy means”.

The Medrash and Ramban identify the mitzvah as “be holy – be separate”, but this is not the definition of holiness. Holiness is consecration to a cause. For people — unlike for Hashem — such consecration entails separation from those other goals that we might set up for ourselves and distract us.

The Beyond Meaningful Relationships – Relationshipful Meaning series at the kloiz meets on Wednesday nights at 8pm EDT.

Wednesday nights (September 14th and 21st, 2022) the Beyond Meaningful Relationship – Relationshipful Meaning chaburah completed our study of Rav Dessler’s Qunterus haChessed from Mikhtav meiEilyahu vol I.

In these chaburos we learned and discussed part 1 chapter 13 and an addendum to 13 and started part 2 (ep. #24) and completed part 2 and the qunterus (ep. #25).

In chapter 13 and the addendum, Rav Dessler closes out the main body of Qunterus haChessed by discussing the relationship between giving, gratitude, love, and how they relate to our love of G-d in particular. Section 2 addresses how the Will to Take interferes with our objectivity and ability to identify the truth, and thus how the Will to Give is a necessary prerequisite to faith.

This is why the Sages comment on the Chumash, when Avraham interrupts his prophetic conversation with G-d to wait on three travelers (whom he thought were coarse pagans, no less!), that greeting guests is greater than recieving the presence of the Shechinah. Because a gift of prophecy doesn’t make full change. But giving enables greater closeness to G-d for the rest of one’s life!

Wednesday night (September 7th, 2022) the Beyond Meaningful Relationship – Relationshipful Meaning chaburah continued our study of Rav Dessler’s Qunterus haChessed from Mikhtav meiEilyahu vol I.

In this chaburah we learned and discussed chapters 9 – 12. After discussing the etiology of the Will to Take, which is rooted in our physical selves and our desire to service and the Will to Give, which comes from our being in the Divine “Image”, Rav Eliyahu Dessler gives advice for how to develop a giving disposition.

In chapter 9, Rav Dessler explains the value of two tools: (1) Using the power of taking– fear of punishment or the desire not to see others’ suffering. Either motive may not be as pure as giving for its own sake, but both will habituate the right behaviors. (2) Using the power of mental imagery. Art utilizes imagery to help us grasp unfathomables like the emotions and others are going through in greater details. We can do the same in our minds. Which would deepen our gains from (1), using our self-interest as a motive to give. But by imagining giving with a full heart, we can practice the proper emotions so that they will be triggered when acting, even if initially acting for imperfect motives.

Chapter 10 continues the constructive advice by addressing how to cure the ambition to take. In short, if you realize that a desire for something is coming from the Will to Take, starve it. After all, “one who has a maneh (a coin worth 100 zuz) wants 200″. So, you would really be happier not trying to get that maneh!

Chapter 11 is about gratitude. Recieving with the Will to Give connects one to others.

Chapter 12 draws a picture of the perfected world. A world of giving and thankfulness. Both sides of the exchange acting from a Will to Give, a win-win that leads to partnerships. With this, Rav Dessler explains an aggadic story about Alexander the Great and the King of Qatzia.

Wednesday night (August 31st, 2022) the Beyond Meaningful Relationship – Relationshipful Meaning chaburah continued our study of Rav Dessler’s Qunterus haChessed from Mikhtav meiEilyahu vol I.

In this chaburah we learned and discussed chapter 7, a later explanation of ch. 7, and ch. 8 (pp. 39-44). In the opening chapters, Rav Dessler established the ideas of the potentials in a person for nesinah and netilah — giving and taking — as attitude and motive. In this week’s chapters Rav Dessler explains how wanting and ambition is a survival trait, for example, the way hunger motivates finding food. And therefore it is inherently tied to the physical. Whereas positive aspirations come from giving, emulating Hashem, and thus the spiritual. We give when we are not only sufficiently supplies, but saveia – content and satisfied with what we have.

Giving leads to love, far more than the other way around.

Wednesday night (August 17th, 2022) the Beyond Meaningful Relationship – Relationshipful Meaning chaburah started our study of Rav Dessler’s Qunterus haChessed from Mikhtav meiEilyahu vol I, printed in two parts — pp. 32-51 and pp. 140-145. (Rabbi Aryeh Carmell, who redacted the Rav Dessler’s letters into book form, has translated these sections as “Discourse on Lovingkindness” in Strive for Truth, his translation of volumes I and II of Mikhtav meiEliyahu.)

In this chaburah we learned and discussed chapters 1 through 3 (pp. 32-35). In them, Rav Dessler talks about the potentials in a person for nesinah and netilah — giving and taking. These potentials have more to do with attitude and motive than the actual action, a point which is clarified in chapter 2. Commerce is not inherently evil because it is all about give-and-take. (The Hebrew term for commerce is quite tellingly “meqach umemkar – buying [etymologically from \לקח\, getting] and selling.)

The question is why is one giving, and why is one taking? Is it about providing an essential good or service to others, or is the businessman just trying to make a buck in any way possible? Commerce is only evil when it becomes about taking advantage of the other, such as overcharging and profiteering on your counterparty’s mistake or misfortune.

Chapter 3 then moves on two to role models — Chanokh and the Chafeitz Chaim. The medrash says that Chanokh was a shoemaker who declared Hashem’s Unity with every stich. Rav Yisrael Salanter teaches that this must refer to how Chanokh made shoes. It is prohibited for a worker to be engrossed in something else during time or work they are being paid for — the medrash wouldn’t be praising him for doing just that. These unifications therefore cannot be some Qabbalistic meditation. Rather, by being so focused to give the customer the most benefit possible, Chanokh was emulating Hashem and thereby by action bringing Unity to Hashem and His reputation on earth. (The Chafeitz Chaim example is more complex, and really needs hearing the discussion in the kloiz.)

Wednesday night (August 10th, 2022) we completed our study of both versions of Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe’s essay Olam haYedidus. In it Rav Wolbe recorded a shiur he gave to a non-observant audience who were interested in Judaism about its fundamentals. To Rav Wolbe, the fundamental idea of Judaism is to build an Olam haYadidus, a World of Affection. Starting with the relationship a Jew has with Hashem, then how that creates a community of caring among Jews, one of peace and unity between Jews and other peoples, and our responsibilities to the world as a whole. And how this whole structure underlies halakhah, illustrating examples from various mitzvos.

Olam haYedidus concludes with a discussion of zarus (estrangement) and akhzarius (cruelty, which Rav Dessler explains as a contraction of akh-zariyus – an extreme estrangement). Our alienation from other people, from G-d and even our “need” to stay busy and never have to build a relationship with ourselves.

Something to think about when singing “Mah yedidus menukhaseikh — How much affection inheres in your rest!” at the Shabbos table!
