David Mitchell: The Bone Clocks

An Evening with Alan Cumming

The Scottish Manhattan-based actor Alan Cumming is a busy man. He has built a fine career with roles ranging from Taggart and The Good Wife on TV, to the X-Men films, and Cabaret and Macbeth on the stage. He has had a photo exhibition named “Alan Cumming Snaps!” and developed an award-winning fragrance named “Cumming”; and has been a tireless champion for LGBT civil rights and HIV. Most recently he’s turned his attention to family history: in his lauded memoir Not My Father’s Son he recounts the story of his appearance on the BBC series Who Do You Think You Are? and his subsequent examination of family secrets and damaged men. Cumming is in conversation with Michael Hurst.

Leading Men (Graeme Lay, Thom Conroy)

Memory Loss (Anna Smaill, Bernard Beckett)

Renee: A Writing Life

The Role of the Critic

C.K. Stead: 2015 Honoured NZ Writer

C.K. Stead is one of New Zealand’s foremost literary figures. A distinguished novelist, literary critic, poet, essayist and Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Auckland, Stead has won many awards and fellowships. He became a Member of the Order of New Zealand in 2007, and is one of only two living writers to hold that honour. Internationally published and reviewed, Stead’s major novels include Smith’s Dream, All Visitors Ashore, My Name WasJudas, Mansfield, Talking About O’Dwyer, The Singing Whakapapa, and The Secret History of Modernism, alongside essays, criticism and major poetry collections. Stead is known for his quick mind and frank views, a confessional voice, and an ease of prose that makes him both accessible and deeply meaningful. His singular place in the cultural life of this country is celebrated in this free session to end the Festival, chaired by Ruth Harley.

Natalie Haynes: A Guide for Modern Living

Ben Okri: The Age of Magic

Not long ago Nigerian poet and novelist Ben Okri caused a stir, writing in the Guardian that black and African writers should “not be expected to write about slavery, poverty or racial injustice. The greatest literature comes not from the heaviest subjects but from freedom of thought.” Okri has written many poetry, essay and short story collections, as well as ten novels including his Booker-winningThe Famished Road. His recent novel The Age of Magic is imbued with what Okri dubs “dream logic”, as well as with sensibility and imagination as he charts the journey of a group of documentary film makers on their way to film a piece on happiness in Arcadia, Greece. He speaks with Paula Morris.

Atul Gawande: The End Matters

Atul Gawande writes profoundly about medicine. He’s a surgeon, author, researcher (with a particular interest in patient safety and care) and staff writer for The New Yorker. Being Mortal is his fourth book, and in it he wrestles as a clinician and as a son with dilemmas concerning end-of-life care. In conversation with Middlemore Hospital ICU specialist David Galler, Gawande will prompt us to rethink our relationship with medicine, during our life and, most crucially, at its close.

English historian, poet, naturalist and illustrator Helen Macdonald once bred hawks for Arab sheikhs. She is also the winner of the Costa Award and the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction for H is for Hawk, a chronicle of her attempt to tame Mabel the goshawk as a means of assuaging grief after the death of her father. “Grief,” she writes, “is just love with nowhere to go.” Referencing the similar attempts of T. H. White (of Once and Future King fame) to master falconry, Macdonald’s memoir is described as, pun intended, “a soaring triumph”. Chaired by Noelle McCarthy.

Anthony Horowitz: Bond and Beyond

Anthony Horowitz mines the world of spooks and gumshoes to craft great books. Daniel Mendelsohn: An Irresistible Critic

Daniel Mendelsohn is an elegant stylistic polymath – a reviewer but also an essayist, memoirist, classicial scholar and translator of the Greek poet CP Cavafy. In his memoir The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million he excavates his family history; in his essay collection Waiting For The Barbarians he disses Mad Men as “melodrama rather than drama”. His new project is a literature-and-life book, recounting the year he spent reading The Odyssey with his late father and the revelations of that experience. He speaks with Ian Wedde.

An Hour with Tim Winton

Tim Winton is a leading exponent of short and long form fiction. Emily St. John Mandel: Station Eleven

Kim Thuy: Beauty of the Everyday

Helen Garner: Justice Observed
