The following Airworthiness Directives (ADs) have been published or updated by EASA:

As expected, EASA have issued two new ADs of the Perkoz airbrake torsion rod shaft that now have a terminating action:

Brian Spreckley presented with the Lilienthal Gliding Medal

We are delighted that Brian Spreckley recently received much deserved recognition by the FAI with the presentation of the Lilienthal Gliding Medal for his services to gliding through competition, instruction and governance, and his significant input into the development of the Sailplane Grand Prix.

‘The Lilienthal Gliding Medal is the highest soaring award in the world, established in 1938 by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) in honour of German aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal.’

Training Standards Manager opportunity

Are you passionate about raising standards in gliding instruction and developing the next generation of instructors? The British Gliding Association is seeking a Training Standards Manager to lead the development and delivery of instructor training standards, courses, and resources across the UK.

This influential role combines training leadership, stakeholder engagement, course management, and resource development to support BGA clubs, instructors, and the BGA Declared Training Organisation (DTO). You will work closely with clubs, the Instructor & Examiner Committee, safety specialists, and instructor coaches to promote excellence, consistency, and safety in gliding training.

With an anticipated start in February 2027, we are looking for someone with:

Strong experience in gliding instruction and instructor development

FI(S) qualification with (a)(7) privileges as a minimum

Excellent communication and organisational skills

A commitment to maintaining and enhancing training quality and safety standards

The ability to manage programmes, resources, and stakeholder relationships effectively

Competition use of the ‘Daventry Box’

The Daventry Box use during competitions is described in an Airspace Co-ordination Notice (ACN) and briefed during competitions. The content of the ACN will be updated by NATS ahead of the 2027 competition season to reduce the risk of misunderstanding with respect to notification times.

AMPIT triangle

Following agreement between local gliding clubs, the BGA and NATS with respect to the AMPIT triangle letter of agreement (LoA), NATS is removing the related procedures following which the AMPIT Triangle LoA will no longer exist.

5 in 13 revalidation for SLMG/Microlight deadline

Pilots currently utilising the exemption ORS4 1633 for revalidating their SLMG/Microlight ratings are reminded that they must transition to a 24 month validity by the 31st October 2026.

Junior Development Squad 2026-2027

The British Gliding Team are now inviting applications for the Junior Development Squad 2026-2027. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of British Team Coaches who are on the lookout for next generation of World Champions.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to take part in a structured training programme, including national and overseas training camps with experienced members of the British Gliding Team. This is your opportunity to take your flying to the next level and to be selected to represent Great Britain at future international competitions.

We welcome applications from a wide range of experience levels. Applicants must be no older than 25 by the end of 2027 and we recommend that applicants should have flown at least one competition.

The deadline for applications is midnight 12th October 2026. We expect to announce the Squad & team for the 2027 Junior Europeans by early November. We wish you the best of luck!

RAEC Trust Bursaries

Royal Aero Club Trust bursaries support all types of air sports and aviation-related activities including gliding.

Applicants for these bursaries must hold British Citizenship and be permanently resident in UK and aged 14-21 years; and for an Advanced Bursary an upper age limit of 24 years applies).

Applications for the latest bursary scheme open on the 1st of November 2026 and close on the 31st December 2026.
