Dubbin is a wax-based leather treatment used to nourish, soften and improve water resistance on suitable leather boots. It is especially useful for waxed leather country boots that work hard through wet grass, mud, yards and daily dog walks.

The important bit is knowing when dubbin is the right product, and when it is not. Dubbin is for smooth or waxed leather. Do not use it on suede or crushed nubuck, because it can darken, flatten or mark the finish. How to use dubbin on waxed leather boots

1. Clean the boots first. Brush off dried mud, then use a suitable cleaner if the leather is dirty. Dubbin should not be rubbed over grit, mud or stable dirt.
2. Let the leather dry naturally. Keep boots away from radiators, fires and direct heat. Warm rooms are fine; direct heat can dry leather too quickly.
3. Test a small hidden area. Dubbin can darken leather, especially just after application, so test first if the colour finish matters.
4. Apply a thin layer. Use a cloth or soft application brush and work a small amount into the leather. More is not always better; heavy layers can feel sticky and take longer to absorb.
5. Pay attention to flex points. Work gently around creases, seams and areas that take the most movement, without forcing product into zips, elastic panels or fabric linings.
6. Leave it to absorb. Give the boots several hours, ideally overnight, before wearing them in wet conditions.
7. Buff away excess. If the surface still feels greasy, buff lightly with a clean cloth.

How often should you apply dubbin?

There is no single schedule for every pair of boots. Boots used daily in wet yards, long grass or muddy gateways may need more frequent care than boots worn occasionally for dry country walks. Cleaning your waxed leather country boots

Yard manure, waste liquids, salt water and mud can be corrosive to leather. Clean them away before applying any protector or conditioner, otherwise dirt can be sealed into the leather.

1. Remove loose dirt. Brush or wipe away mud from the upper, sole edge, stitching, lace area and zip teeth.
2. Clean the leather. Use Bareback Footwear Leather Cleaner foam to lift dirt, remove stains and clean the leather without compromising colour or finish. Work it in gently with the hog hair brush, then wipe away excess with a soft slightly damp cloth.
3. Dry naturally. Leave boots to dry for around 24 hours in a room-temperature, ventilated space. Do not use direct heat, a radiator or a fire.

Get right in there

When cleaning boots, remove insoles and laces where possible so you can clean every seam and surface properly.

• If the lining gets wet during cleaning, dry it thoroughly before wearing again. Crumpled paper works well inside the boot.
• Our insoles are removable, so you can clean underneath and replace them when needed.
• Remove laces, wash them with fresh water, and allow them to dry fully before re-lacing.
• Clean zips with a soft bristled brush to remove mud, bedding and grit from between the teeth. Never force a dirty zip.

Some leather care products may alter colour or flatten the nap of nubuck or suede. Always read the care instructions and test a small hidden area before applying product across the whole boot.

Storing your country boots

1. Clean, dry and treat boots before storing them for a long period.
2. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, damp and extreme heat or cold.

Cleaning crushed nubuck and nubuck

Crushed nubuck and nubuck have a nap, so they need a gentler route than waxed leather. Do not use the waxed leather care kit, dubbin, wax polish or heavy creams on suede, nubuck or crushed nubuck.

1. Remove loose dirt: let mud dry, then brush gently in the direction of the fibres with a suede or nubuck brush.
2. Clean carefully: use a nubuck cleaner or a product suitable for nap leather. Avoid soaking the boot.
3. Blot and dry: use a clean dry cloth to remove excess moisture, then allow the boots to dry naturally away from heat.
4. Restore texture: once dry, brush gently to lift the nap and restore the finish.
5. Protect: apply a suede/nubuck-safe protector spray where suitable.

Leather cleaning don'ts

• Never leave boots covered in muck and mud to dry out without cleaning or treatment.
• Never dry boots in direct contact with a heat source such as a radiator or fireplace.
• Do not use aggressive products or household detergents.
• Never use dubbin, wax polish or heavy creams on suede, nubuck or crushed nubuck.
• Never store boots when damp or folded.
• Do not leave zips full of dirt or force them open or closed.
• Remember that leather will dry out over time if it is never cared for or treated.

Can my waterproof boots be resoled?

Sadly, the simple answer is no. Soles on waterproof boots are welted and stitched. Removing the sole can damage the waterproof membrane, which means the boots would no longer be fully waterproof.

Resoling waterproof boots

The waterproof membrane in our boots is an impermeable lining that encases the foot and leg area. Any weakness or hole created in this membrane can cause the boot to leak.

We can sometimes resole waterproof boots if the leather is still supple and if you are happy to accept that they will no longer be fully waterproof afterwards.

Treating leather boots

If a repair is still required, keeping the outer leather supple and protected will help the boots stay in better condition. Leather treatments need to be maintained regularly, especially if boots are used in wet, muddy or yard conditions.

Wellies are generally made from waterproof rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which  work to keep your feet dry but are not always the most comfortable. The lining, typically isn't very thick or supportive around the ankle, creating a generous amount of room which could eventually lead to discomfort and rubbing as well as not having a long lifespan when subject to equestrian duties. If you were to ride in a pair of wellies your foot is in danger of getting stuck in the stirrup. While riding it is important to only choose boots with specific riding soles.

Riding Boot Soles

When choosing the perfect riding boot for you, you will want to consider the following;

• A none slip, smooth tread is best as your foot should sit comfortably and safely in the stirrup.
• A small heel around 1-1.5inches, this will help your foot to stay in a supportive place (and not slide through the stirrup).
• If you do happen to fall you want your foot to come out of the stirrup smoothly and with ease.
• A degree of support around the ankle but also allows the foot to move around comfortably in the stirrup- perhaps laces or zips?

Jodhpur Boots

If you decide to ride in a jodhpur boot make sure that the tread is shallow and compact to prevent catching in the stirrup. Rubber soles are the most popular as the have more flexibility and are better at absorbing shock. However, if you opt for a wooden composite sole these are stiffer but provide extra support in your forefoot whilst riding. As well as improving posture  and extra protection round the yard, often the will still have a rubber tread to prevent slipping.

What is nubuck leather?

Nubuck leather has featured in premium leather footwear for some time. It comes from the outer layer of the hide and includes the top grain of the leather. The thicker outside of the hide is considered more robust and durable which is why it tends to be used in premium footwear for horse riders and hikers. 

The nubuck hide is sanded to give it's beautiful textured appearance or waxed to give the leather an extra layer of protection.

Is nubuck leather waterproof?

Due to Nubuck leather's thickness it is one of the most water resistant leathers out there. However all leather is naturally porous so prolonged water exposure to water will permeate through. You can treat the leather to increase water repellence although different treatments can have effects on the leathers appearance. 

How do you treat nubuck leather?

The key thing to consider when choosing your leather treatment is how your boots have been finished. If the leather is smooth and waxed apply a leather treatment wax or dubbin. This will nourish the leather as well as increase the water resistance.

If the leather has been sanded it has a textured nap to it, applying wax will change the appearance of your boots irreversibly.  You are advised to use a nubuck spray to protect these boots, most of these sprays also include a degree of waterproofing.

The Calf

Calf fitting is the area which most people tend to struggle, if you count yourself in what we think is a majority of people that find it awkward buying knee high boots we are here to help! It took me years of searching before I found something that both looked nice and suited my riders calf’s.

1. The calf length should be just bellow the back of the knee, assume a riding position with knees bent. It is OK to feel that boot in the crease of the knee however this should not be uncomfortable, the boots should drop around ¼ of an inch, all leather boots do!
2. Tall riding boots should be tight without cutting circulation off. Watch out for the cut of the calf, if this does not follow the curve of your leg you may find that you could have a gap in between the widest point of your calf and ankle.
3. The zip should be firm and should zip all the way to the top. It is OK to for the boots to be tight when zipped up as the leather will stretch, however if the zip is forced excessively it will put excess strain on the zip which could cause them to pop.

Top tip: if your boots feel very snug, take the insole out while your waiting for the leather to stretch. We often use thick memory foam or gel insoles in our riding boots which some riders prefer to take out)

The Ankle

The fit round the ankle is down to personal preference, some people love the support of a very tight fitting boot round the ankle while others perfect a looser fit for maximum range of movement.

1. New riding boots should be a little tricky to get on at first, especially Italian leather ones. If the boots are excessively loose round the ankle the leather will crease, affecting their comfort, durability and look.

If your boots are a struggle to get on to start with, use a shoehorn or a thin sock. While researching our Spanish riding boot collection in Spain we were told to use a plastic bag instead of a sock! I can confirm this does work if you don’t mind looking a bit silly in the process.

Measuring your calf

Before ordering long riding boots it is best to measure your calf. This can ensure you have a great fitting long riding boot and can prevent the effort of sending a boot which does not fit back. Measuring your calf is simple here is our guide:
