Cleaning your Waxed Leather country boots💦

Yard manure/ waste, salt water and waste liquids can be very corrosive to leather. To ensure your boots are fully protected and performing their best you must always scrub them with a soft brush and rinse with fresh tap water after exposure.

1. Clean off with fresh, clean water to remove any acids and harmful chemicals that can damage natural leather products

2. Remember to dry off in a natural environment so they are not going from one extreme to another.

3. Apply Carbon Complete cleaning foam across the boot scrubbing in to remove any ingrained dirt and muck from the pores of the leather and wipe off any excess with a soft, slightly damp cloth

4. Leave your boots to dry naturally for around 24hours in a room temperature, dry room. Do not leave to dry near a direct hear source (fire)

5. in a well ventilated room or outdoors apply liberally the Carbon Pro protective spray to the whole boot, apply one or two layers of this allowing the coat to dry in-between each application. 

6. Once the boots are dry-

• if they are a waxed leather apply the Bareback Luxury Dubbin to the boots using a soft sponge or cloth. Pay particular attention to creases and seams where the boot will be put under pressure.  

• If they are Suede or Crushed Nubuck scuff out any marks with a suede brush, rubbing against the grain and back again to add the texture back to the surface of the boot.

• if there are any marks on smooth, polished, leather use a coloured polish to buff them out! 

Get right in there!

When cleaning the boots don't shy away from removing the insoles and laces to allow the leather to be cleaned thoroughly in every seam and surface.

• If the lining of the boots got wet during cleaning its best to dry this out thoroughly before using again, crumpled up news paper works well inside. 
• Our insoles are removeable to clean underneath and replace should they need over time.
• Remove the laces and wash off with clean, fresh water, allow to dry thoroughly before re-lacing.
• All zips should be cleaned through with a soft bristled brush (suede brush, toothbrush) to remove any mud, muck, shavings e.t.c that may have found their way in between the teeth, never force a zip up or down or leave dirt in the teeth.

Using the correct products to keep your boots looking and working their best is essential as some leather care products may alter the colour of the leather and will smooth the nap of a nubuck or suede. We recommend to read the care instructions on the item thoroughly and that you test a small area of your boot, i.e. the inner ankle area before spraying your entire boot.

Storing your country boots

1. Boots should be cleaned, dried and treated before storing for prolonged periods of time to keep the leather healthy
2. The area they are stored in should be cool and dry avoiding direct sunlight, damp and extreme cold/ heat conditions.
3. Your Bareback Boots will keep their shape best in storage when used with boot trees.

How to re-lace your boots

Now, this is a personal one, everyone prefers a different fastening, but when re-lacing our short boots this is our team in Portugal's method

 In order to Clean your Crushed Nubuck: 

Materials you'll need:

1. Soft brush or suede/nubuck brush
2. Clean, dry cloth
3. Nubuck cleaner, our recommended https://www.barebackfootwear.com/products/collonil-carbon-pro-waterproofing-set-300ml
4. Fresh, clean water
5. Nubuck protector, our recommended: https://www.barebackfootwear.com/products/collonil-carbon-pro-waterproofing-spray-300ml

Steps:

1. Remove Loose Dirt: Allow mud and dirt to dry on the boots then gently brush off any loose dirt or debris from the crushed nubuck using a soft brush. Make sure to brush in the direction of the fibres.
2. Clean with Nubuck Cleaner: If you're using a nubuck cleaner, follow the product instructions. Dampen a clean, soft cloth with the solution and gently blot the stained or soiled areas.
3. Blot and Pat Dry: After cleaning, use a dry, clean cloth to blot the cleaned areas and remove excess moisture. Do not rub vigorously.
4. Air Dry: Allow the nubuck to air dry completely before wearing or storing the item. Avoid using heat sources like hair dryers, as excessive heat can damage nubuck.
5. Brush to Restore Texture: Once the nubuck is dry, use a soft bristled brush/ suede brush to gently restore the texture. Brush in the direction of the fibres to lift them and maintain the crushed appearance.
6. Optional: Apply Nubuck Protector: Consider applying a nubuck protector spray to guard against future stains and water damage.

Tips:

• Avoid using water excessively, as it can cause water stains on  lighter/ brushed nubuck. 
• Always allow the nubuck to dry naturally; avoid using heat sources or direct sunlight.
• Remember, prevention is key. Regularly brushing and protecting your crushed nubuck items and applying a protective spray can help maintain their appearance and extend their lifespan.

Leather cleaning don'ts:

• Never leave your boots covered in muck and mud to dry out without any treatment and expect a long life span! This prolonged exposure to acids will cause the leather on the boots to dry/shrink and crack across the main foot area (the vamp), unfortunately it cannot be repaired or replenished at this point.
• Never dry your boots in direct contact with a heat source like a radiator or a fireplace.
• Do not use aggressive products and detergents to clean the boots.
• Never store boots when still damp or store folded.
• Do not leave zips with dirt in and force down at any time
• Any boots with laces do not soak these and leave next to a heat source.
• Never forget the boots are leather and will dry out over time if never cared or treated.

Can my waterproof boots be resoled?

Sadly the simple answer is no, soles on waterproof boots are both welted and stitched. Removing the sole will damage the waterproof membrane causing your boots no longer to be waterproof. 

Resoling waterproof boots

The waterproof membrane in our boots is an impermeable lining that fully encompasses the foot and leg in your boots, it fully encases the foot bed above and below. Any weakness or holes created in this membrane will cause your boots to leak.

We can resole your waterproof boots if the leather is supple if you are happy to accept they  will no longer be fully waterproof. 

Treating leather boots 

If a repair is still required the leather on the outside of the boots can be treated which will help with adding a layer of waterproofing. However leather treatments must be maintained in order to keep them waterproof.

Wellies are generally made from waterproof rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which  work to keep your feet dry but are not always the most comfortable. The lining, typically isn't very thick or supportive around the ankle, creating a generous amount of room which could eventually lead to discomfort and rubbing as well as not having a long lifespan when subject to equestrian duties. If you were to ride in a pair of wellies your foot is in danger of getting stuck in the stirrup. While riding it is important to only choose boots with specific riding soles.

Riding Boot Soles

When choosing the perfect riding boot for you, you will want to consider the following;

• A none slip, smooth tread is best as your foot should sit comfortably and safely in the stirrup.
• A small heel around 1-1.5inches, this will help your foot to stay in a supportive place (and not slide through the stirrup).
• If you do happen to fall you want your foot to come out of the stirrup smoothly and with ease.
• A degree of support around the ankle but also allows the foot to move around comfortably in the stirrup- perhaps laces or zips?

Jodhpur Boots

If you decide to ride in a jodhpur boot make sure that the tread is shallow and compact to prevent catching in the stirrup. Rubber soles are the most popular as the have more flexibility and are better at absorbing shock. However, if you opt for a wooden composite sole these are stiffer but provide extra support in your forefoot whilst riding. As well as improving posture  and extra protection round the yard, often the will still have a rubber tread to prevent slipping.

When walking on hills, particularly down hill your body weight can place a lot of strain on your knees, ankles, and feet. Your toes can knock into the front of the boot when your foot slides forward. In order to prevent blisters, sore toes and back pain occur you can:

• Lace your boots tightly to reduce the movement inside the boot
• Ensure the foot has a slight area of free room on the toes to allow movement and slight swelling
• Maintain a measured pace take small controlled steps
• Bend the knees slightly to absorb the shock
• Place each foot carefully to reduce the stress on the feet

This is one of the most traditional styles of country boot, as the boot has no zip or laces which could potentially become a weakness where water could come through. The disadvantage of a pull on waterproof boot is that if you struggle with a high instep or very high arches they can be slightly harder to pull on and off.

Walking boots are made with a specific environment in mind. Characteristics such as sole stiffness or ankle height will vary depending on the terrain and conditions you will be heading into.

If, for example, you intend to stick to well-trodden and predictable paths, you can go for a lightweight boot or shoe with a reasonable amount of flexibility (the Kentucky Storm). In less challenging terrain, flexibility is good as it helps your foot move naturally and can aid your comfort on longer journeys.

What is nubuck leather?

Nubuck leather has featured in premium leather footwear for some time. It comes from the outer layer of the hide and includes the top grain of the leather. The thicker outside of the hide is considered more robust and durable which is why it tends to be used in premium footwear for horse riders and hikers. 

The nubuck hide is sanded to give it's beautiful textured appearance or waxed to give the leather an extra layer of protection.

Is nubuck leather waterproof?

Due to Nubuck leather's thickness it is one of the most water resistant leathers out there. However all leather is naturally porous so prolonged water exposure to water will permeate through. You can treat the leather to increase water repellence although different treatments can have effects on the leathers appearance. 

How do you treat nubuck leather?

The key thing to consider when choosing your leather treatment is how your boots have been finished. If the leather is smooth and waxed apply a leather treatment wax or dubbin. This will nourish the leather as well as increase the water resistance.

If the leather has been sanded it has a textured nap to it, applying wax will change the appearance of your boots irreversibly.  You are advised to use a nubuck spray to protect these boots, most of these sprays also include a degree of waterproofing.

The Calf

Calf fitting is the area which most people tend to struggle, if you count yourself in what we think is a majority of people that find it awkward buying knee high boots we are here to help! It took me years of searching before I found something that both looked nice and suited my riders calf’s.

1. The calf length should be just bellow the back of the knee, assume a riding position with knees bent. It is OK to feel that boot in the crease of the knee however this should not be uncomfortable, the boots should drop around ¼ of an inch, all leather boots do!
2. Tall riding boots should be tight without cutting circulation off. Watch out for the cut of the calf, if this does not follow the curve of your leg you may find that you could have a gap in between the widest point of your calf and ankle.
3. The zip should be firm and should zip all the way to the top. It is OK to for the boots to be tight when zipped up as the leather will stretch, however if the zip is forced excessively it will put excess strain on the zip which could cause them to pop.

The Foot 

Foot size is important, when you are trying on tall boots use the socks and leg wear that you normally ride in.

1. When standing you don’t want to feel your toes at the end of the boot
2. You should be snug in the foot without being pinched, all good leather stretches and will allow the boots to become molded to your foot the more you wear them.
3. A little heel movement is normal, but you do not want to feel like you are slopping around

Top tip: if your boots feel very snug, take the insole out while your waiting for the leather to stretch. We often use thick memory foam or gel insoles in our riding boots which some riders prefer to take out)

The Ankle

The fit round the ankle is down to personal preference, some people love the support of a very tight fitting boot round the ankle while others perfect a looser fit for maximum range of movement.

1. New riding boots should be a little tricky to get on at first, especially Italian leather ones. If the boots are excessively loose round the ankle the leather will crease, affecting their comfort, durability and look.

If your boots are a struggle to get on to start with, use a shoehorn or a thin sock. While researching our Spanish riding boot collection in Spain we were told to use a plastic bag instead of a sock! I can confirm this does work if you don’t mind looking a bit silly in the process.

Here we will discuss the best boots to go for if you are just starting out and the reasons to choose them.

Comfort - There's no sense buying boots that you can't wait to take off. 

When your learning there is so much to take in, your learning a completing new skill. So competition boots are designed to take lots of breaking in, to be skin tight and made of very stiff leather. There is no reason for beginner to choose this style of footwear. Buy something comfortable, multipurpose and durable so you are happy wearing them all day and they will be great for lots of different styles of riding until you choose which discipline if any you would like to specialise in. 

Style and purpose - Beware of yard boots

Riding boots tend to be designed for a specific purpose, although it is a good idea to have a hybrid style riding boot when starting out we would suggest staying away from a yard / riding hybrid. These boots can be bulky and heavy which leaves you less reactive in the stirrups. 

Safety - Just the basics

Just a bit of common sense is required when selecting your first boots, they need to be closed toed and made of a substantial material with reinforcement on the toe box. All riding boots should feature a slight heel to stop your feet sliding straight through the stirrups. The ideal height for a heel is 2.5cm and no less than 1.5cm. 

Materials - It make all the difference 

What your boots are made from will have a huge influence on how long they last, how warm they are and there fit. Choosing a leather moulds and stretches to your leg is more comfortable, breathable and lasts longer than a composite plastic boot. You also want to be on the look out for sheepskin lined riding boots if you suffer from feeling the cold.

Short or Long Riding Boots - The age old debate

We split our range easily into two groups, ankle boots and long boots. Long riding boots are knee height and offer a simple one item solution a protection from pinching on the calves which can happen to new riders. Ankle riding boots are just above ankle height which can often be worn with a half chap or gator. Half chaps and gators come in lots of different styles and fits so can provide a more made to measure feel.

What makes a good riding sole?

It is advised that a riding boot should have a small heel (1 – 1.5inches), this heel will help your foot stay in place in the stirrup (and not slide through it).

It is also best for your riding boots to have a smooth sole (not too grippy) and to allow for this light contact in the stirrup and allowing for a reactive ride, responding to the movements and reaction of your horse.

In the unlikely event that you fall from a horse, you want your foot to come out of the stirrup smoothly without getting caught, therefore a smooth sole and squared off heel is best

How does a riding sole and yard sole differ?

A yard boot is designed with durability and tough tread in mind to keep you sure footed no matter the weather. Yard boots therefore have a deeper tread in the foot bed and are commonly a thicker rubber, when taking this in mind this would make them slightly less favourable when riding.

Balancing Riding and Yard Duties

Determining whether your primary use will be riding or performing yard tasks is crucial, as it influences the choice of sole and fit.

• Yard-Focused Boots: These boots typically feature heavy-duty soles that provide superior grip and protection on uneven or slippery surfaces.

Balancing Riding and Yard Duties 

This is perhaps the hardest decision. The balance of whether you plan use the boot as more of a riding boot or a boot for mucking out will define which sole and fit you go for.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

There is a simple answer for the first question. Will my leather riding boots drop?

YES, long riding boots will drop

All leather long boots drop a little in height as the leather stretches and loosens. You will find that you develop creasing around the ankle and this will result in the boots dropping slightly. 

The next question is a little more complicated. How much will my leather riding drop?

Long riding boots will drop around 1.5cm - 2.5cm*

Now this is dependant on quite a few variables:

• The type of leather, a soft leather will drop more than a more stiff variety 
• The fit, if you have gone for a tight fitting long riding boot you will find that the boots will drop less and a looser more casual riding boot is more likely to drop more.

Added support 

 Our long riding boots have added support around the ankle to minimise this drop and to offer protection against rubbing once the boots have dropped.
