You may notice many of our sandals with arch support have a back strap. This is intentional, as we recently learned from Dr. Cathleen McCarthy, a top podiatrist in Phoenix and author of Podiatry Shoe Review, that sandals with back straps are a must if you suffer from hammertoes or bunions. I’ve been watching the evolution of Fitflop mary janes over the years and I believe they’ve perfected their craft in the Delicato Wave Edge – and just in time since mary janes are trending big time this spring.

While the golden yellow ones caught my eye initially, I decided to order the denim blue ones (called “cosmic blue”) as I really don’t need to call more attention to my size 10 feet. Plus the scalloped edge adds a special touch unlike other plain janes.

I like how they feel on my sensitive feet–the upper material is a polyester textile similar to canvas, but the lining is described as “leather/microfiber,” which is confusing because I’m not sure what that means, but it sure is soft against my toes and heel.

Since I have hammertoes and a tailor’s bunion due to rheumatoid arthritis, I’m dialed in to toe room and will not keep any shoes that irritate either. These Fitflop mary janes provide just enough room for my toes to feel comfy while still maintaining a slim profile.

The non-removable insole is lightly cushioned (more than most fashion flats) with extra padding at the heel. There is arch support but it’s not as enhanced as you’d find in Vionic flats. If your feet crave high arch support, the Fitflop Delicato MJ isn’t for you.

Yes, that’s a real adjustable buckle, not hook and loop velcro!

Overall these sweet mary janes are a welcome addition to my spring wardrobe. They cover my toes since I’m not quite ready for open-toe shoes, the fit and feel is comfortable for a flat and I love the style and color.

I picture Goldilocks trying on these Clarks loafers and saying, “Ahh, just right.” The lug sole isn’t too chunky, the toe box isn’t too wide and clownish. The arch support is neither too aggressive (Birkenstock) or too flat (dare I say Rothy’s flats?). The cushioning is noticeable but not marshmallowy. I was drawn to this Clarks loafer mainly because of its price point, good looks and 5 star reviews for comfort.

Since becoming aware of the Taos Trulie a few months ago, I can’t go a day without seeing this wonder sandal on someone’s feet at the grocery store, Starbucks, doctor’s office or library. It’s everywhere out here in the western suburbs of Chicago. And there’s good reason for that.

The Taos Trulie meets and exceeds summer sandal requirements for many kinds of feet. Plantar fasciitis? No problem. The Trulie features a 1 3/4″ heel which provides just a little lift which can work wonders for relieving PF pain. The enhanced arch support isn’t as aggressive as Vionic, yet feels good under my fairly high arches. The polyurethane-cork footbed is shock-absorbing and lightweight, plus it’s topped with premium padding which feels great to sensitive soles. Bunions? I find that the straps cross above and below the bunion area, so there’s no irritation.

After reading through scores of online reviews, I’d recommend the Taos Trulie sandal for those with back pain, and for wide or narrow feet. The adjustable forefoot and ankle straps allow for a customized fit.

After wearing my Trulies out in the sun today, I noticed a familiar design on my feet. Have you heard of a Chaco tan? That’s almost exactly the pattern you’ll find across your feet if you spend time in the sun in your Trulies. So think of the style as a dress casual Chaco sandal!

I have even strapped my hard orthotics into them. Expensive but so versatile (wore with skirt today at work, then jeans.) and worth every penny. I also have awful, tight hammer toes on left foot and a bunionette/overlapping pinky/2nd toe on right. Doesn’t bother them!

I may have received the Taos Super Side sandals from Taos Footwear, but I can honestly say after months of wear, these are the real deal.

If you have forefoot pain due to metatarsalgia or hallux rigidus or midfoot pain due to arthritic changes, the Taos Super Side sandal is a must try.

The hook and loop (velcro) straps allow for a customized fit and are lined with soft, waterproof neoprene. No blisters for me! The forefoot straps conceal the bunions nicely and don’t come undone.

The chunky outsole provides stability and support. The arch support is perfectly placed and feels great. It also keeps the foot from bending too much through the stride, protecting those forefoot and midfoot joints, tendons and ligaments. And yes, they’re great for hallux rigidus big toes.

The footbed provides cushioning but not that marshmallow-y memory foam feeling, rather a firm cushion that revives tired feet and puts a little spring in the step!

My sandals are all dry and ready to go again today after a wet hike near the river last night!

Respected podiatrist and foot/ankle specialist Dr. Tom Biernacki explains the condition well over at his wonderful YouTube channel. He states, “A shoe can make all the difference in the world.” When it comes to to the best shoes for hallux rigidus, he recommends footwear with a stiff heel, stiff midsole and a non-flexible forefoot.

Keeping Dr. Biernacki’s wisdom in mind, I’ve rounded up the most comfortable (and stylish as possible) women’s shoes for hallux rigidus based on my own experience with hallux rigidus caused by rheumatoid arthritis. I’ve also gleaned the recommendations from the Hallux Rigidus Support Group and my own Barking Dog Shoes Community.

Even if you have turf toe (a sprain or injury to the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the big toe), you’ll find these women’s shoe recommendations helpful!

Athletic Shoes for Hallux Rigidus

“I bought a second pair to wear for everyday use. Having Hallux Rigidus, these shoes are a dream for my feet. I took up running again last year and my feet no longer ache.” Dicks customer

A soft, forgiving upper is easy on sensitive bone spurs, while a thick and cushioned rocker outsole gently propels the foot through the stride, taking pressure off arthritic toe joints. Plus, the Brooks Ghost Max 3 accommodates orthotics.

My personal favorite fitness shoe is the Topo Athletic Atmos (or any of their styles with a thicker sole). I love this brand so much. The toe box is wide, the arch support is perfect (so is the cushioning), and the fit at the heel is snug–plus a rocker sole! I wore them pre-cheilectomy and post-cheilectomy. Hoka fitness shoes: Hoka shoes (specifically the Bondi style) are one of the best running shoes for hallux rigidus on the market. The combination of rocker sole, thick outsole, enhanced cushioning and wide toe box means the big toe is protected from cramping and over-flexing. Find the most current Hoka Bondi 9 in a variety of neutrals and brights.

If your hallux rigidus is severe, consider the Hoka Skyward with a carbon fiber plate that stiffens the forefoot area of the shoe preventing it from bending and protecting the big toe joint.

A generous toe box, gentle forefoot rocker sole, and plush but stable platform make the New Balance Fresh Foam x 1080 a great option for hallux rigidus sufferers. If you’ve tried this model and it’s too plush or the rocker sole makes you feel unstable, consider the New Balance Fresh Foam x 880 with a more stable outsole.

“I looked for and purchased several shoes to accommodate my Hallux Rigidus (rigid toe) and a bone spur. None worked. They usually were too tight across the ball of my foot where I have the bone spur on the top of my foot. These shoes are perfect. I got the wide because that is what my podiatrist recommended. Most wides were to loose fitting, but these were great. Also, they have just enough “rocker” to keep my rigid toe from hurting.”

Casual Shoes for Hallux Rigidus

Fitflop has diversified their footwear collection to the point it’s hard to know which footbed you’re getting. Good news! The F-Mode footbed features their original podiatrist recommended Microwobbleboard technology (three levels of targeted cushioning plus anatomical arch support). A generous toe box and sturdy yet lightweight flatform keep sensitive toes happy.

If you have difficult-to-fit feet (narrow or even extra wide width), the Ros Hommerson Dannon is definitely worth a try! This comfortable loafer is another excellent recommendation from a member of the Hallux Rigidus Support Group.

We love this newer mary jane style by Taos. The toe box is generous and the insole offers substantial arch and metatarsal support. The outsole is stiff enough to protect the big toe joint from too much movement through the stride.

I love these shoes. I own a pair and recommend them to everyone that suffers from plantar fasciitis to bunions to hallux rigidus. (see my Youtube review). The footbed is contoured to support arches, heel and metatarsals. The sole is thick and doesn’t overly bend (the name of the shoe is a misnomer), protecting the forefoot. The toe box is generous and foot-shaped. A+. Available in euro sizes 36-41 (6-10.5–I take a 41 for my size 10 feet) for $115-164 from Birkenstock, Nordstrom & Zappos.

Sandals for Hallux Rigidus

I wore these all over the place last summer from a Canadian camping trip, to long walks down the river path near our home, to North Carolina beaches. Next stop–Akumal, Mexico. I love the Taos Super Side for its enhanced arch support, thick outsole and mild rocker, soft wateproof neoprene straps that adjust over the toes (and bone spurs). See my complete review here. Recommended by members of the Hallux Rigidus Support Group, the Aerosoles Cosmos (and similar platform heel iterations) could be the golden ticket for getting through a special occasion without wincing in pain all night. The 3″ stable block heel and 1.25″ platform work together elevate the foot without the drastic toe to heel angle. An Ortholite footbed provides good cushioning to sensitive feet.

Hi, I’m Kirsten with BarkingDogShoes.com, where I review the most comfortable shoes for women today—and this is the Vionic City Walk sneaker. If you love the look of Adidas Sambas and Gazelles but your feet need more support than those can offer, this is Vionic’s answer.

What I really like is the footbed. You get solid arch support and a nice deep heel cup, which is something you just don’t find in most low-profile sneakers. Even though the style is sleek and minimalist, the comfort is very real. There’s also plenty of room in the toe box, which means less pressure on your forefoot—and even space if you prefer a chunkier orthotic, though I find the built-in footbed supportive enough on its own.

The shape is especially friendly if you deal with bunions: it’s rounded, not narrow through the midfoot, and roomy where you need it most. The outsole is stiffer than your typical fashion sneaker, which is great if you have hallux rigidus or big-toe arthritis, because it doesn’t bend easily and helps protect that joint.

Bottom line? The Vionic City Walk gives you the chic, street-style look everyone loves, but with real support, stability, and structure. It’s a fantastic option for sightseeing, travel, or everyday walking when comfort actually matters.
