Anna Carey is an Australian-born artist whose work overlaps photography, model-making, film and drawing. Through memory and imagination, she creates fictive architectural spaces based on familiar iconic architecture which she photographs.  The camera lens magnifies the model with all its imperfections and reminds the viewer that the photograph has been constructed with a miniature materialized object.. The photograph magnifies the miniature, reminding the viewer that the transient space is a constructed object. This aims to reawaken imaginations for the viewer by creating a space of stillness and reflection for one to drift between reality and daydreams – for rediscovering the universe that is inside ourselves.

Take a long look at the photos below. Her work speaks for herself. It is intriguing, mysterious and yet you have the feeling that you know that place. You’re sure you’ve seen it before when on the road to Las Vegas or on your way to Phoenix right? Absolutely not. These motels come from Carey’s imagination. She pays attention to details when creating the motels, but not too many because she wants those places look like they are abandoned, like the reflection of an old story.

Discovered in 2012, I instantly knew Brian Wills had “something” and that he would create a very strong body of works. Since 2012 he kept creating these wooden panels with thread only meticulously stretched all over to create both an abstract motif and an optical illusion. One would think he would get tired of using the same technique for so long. But he kept going and digging within the endless possibilities of the technique he created. Congratulations to Mr Will Brians.

Brian Wills is the kind of artist we do like at be-Art. Although he was successful as an engineer he realized his life was not consistent with that which he had dreamed so he took the plunge into what he always liked, to be an artist. To reach that goal he didn’t take the easiest path because he chose a constrain technique which is to wrap thread around panels. Within the rigorous of that constrain he finds limitless possibilities of colors, backgrounds, composition, size and format. The result is astonishing. BCh

BCh: Could you explain your technique for our readers who don’t see pretty well on the Internet

Brian Wills: The technique involves the wrapping of thread around the panel.  There are thousands of individual threads wrapped together to create one individual field of color.  Those composited together create not only color comparisons, but also build up texture on the surface of the painting.  That, combined with painted back grounds, creates layers of texture, motion, color, and depth.

BCh: You’re 100% American and your work looks like the one I saw in Switzerland: ultra minimalist. Where does it come from?

Brian Wills: There is a certain need for order in my work.  I try to combine many different elements into a single work without their individual presence being obvious.  That is, I hope the layers of the materials reveal themselves slowly.  With this in mind, I believe there is an inherent singularity to surfaces.  Minimal in both concept and aesthetic.

BCh: You have a singular career path, can you tell us

Brian Wills: I don’t come from a traditional art background.  I studied law and English on a graduate level before making art full-time.  With that said, I love the path that I have taken.  My studies inform the art that I make and how I make it.  I’ve enjoyed the discoveries that I have had to make on my own.

BCh: One day you told me you found something in art you never found before. What is it?

Brian Wills: There is an element of the unknown in art.  Without sounding too mysterious, I like the unanswerable questions that good art ask of you.  At the same time, I find an incredible sense of completion in making art.  The cognitive dissonance is nice.

BCh: Tell us about your relation with time.

Brian Wills: The most obvious relation I have with time is the fact that it takes so much “time” to create the work.  I try hard to make things that may appear manufactured (from afar) just by the sheer element that you would not think that a person could or would make sometime so intricate by hand.  I hope that it draws the viewer into the work. The thousands of threads, or strokes, or marks that may exist in a work also marks the passing of time.  It almost makes them seem ancient.

BCh: To which artist do you feel related to?
Brian Wills: Robert Irwin, James Turrell, John McLaughlin, Gene Davis, Agnes Martin, Bruce Nauman, and Brice Marden among others are all artist that I love and have influenced the way I make art. I very much relate to their technique, form, beauty, and wisdom.

The Brewery was named after former Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery. It has started to welcome artist studios in 1982. The Brewery Art Walk is a unique charming old place where over 100 participating resident Artists open their studio to the public. It’s certainly a do not miss if you like contemporary art.

An Art Walk/art Show/Open Studios in Los Angeles is always an interesting time to discover new artists, astonishing art and make friends, all together.

At the Brewery Art Enthusiasts come with their children, grab a beer and go from one studio to another sneaking around to find the next Ed Ruscha. The artists clean their studio to show their work for sale, hide the unfinished one and get ready to talk. It’s a unique occasion for them to hear from an unknown about their work. They can understand how much ready they are to explain clearly what they do. 

For the visitor, it’s a unique opportunity to chat with the artists about their work process and eventually buy one piece. It’s the best way to test your eye because the best and the worst is on display right in front of you and you need to sort it. It is the right place and the right moment to exercise ask yourself why you like or dislike the piece in front of you. It’s an excellent exercise for the art collector your going to be.

The Brewery Artwalk Association, (BAA) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 O¤rganization: Their mission is to produce, organize and facilitate the recurring biannual event known as the Brewery Artwalk. The Brewery Artwalk is a free, educational, public arts event, designed to create an alternative venue for art exposure. It also allows artists at the Brewery the opportunity to open their studios and connect with the general public, the art industry, other working artists and the community. Families, children, students and individuals are encouraged to view the artists’ work, meet with the artists in person and engage in dialogue about the art. The event is a unique community service open and free to all.“

The art walk is definitely way more organized. It has now an App to guide you, food trucks and so on.

About her second solo show At LUIS DE JESUS LOS ANGELES Joy of Other Suns – October 13, 2021:

JUNE EDMONDS: Joy of Other Suns is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery after many other shows in artfairs with the gallery

June Edmond’s latest body of work continues her exploration of race and history, using social abstraction as a means to navigate these complex issues. In her paintings, Edmonds commemorates the historical contributions of African American female pioneers and early landowners in Southern California. She is particularly drawn to the stories of Bridget “Biddy” Mason (1818-1891), former slave turned Los Angeles land owner, entrepreneur and philanthropist; María Rita Quintero Valdés de Villa (1791-1854), an African-Mexican and granddaughter of Luis Quintero, one of the original settlers of Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas (Ranch of the Gathering Waters)—known today as Beverly Hills; and Henrietta VanHorn-Debose (1855-1931), the first Black woman and early property owner to settle in La Jolla. Edmonds expands on these histories, considering the implications of the Great Migration in the 20th Century and how it fundamentally changed the United States.

In many of the works on view, Edmonds has departed from the layered impasto texture that has dominated her “energy circle” and flag paintings and employed a flatter application of paint. With this new development, she moves into a wider conversation about painting and geometric abstraction, with an emphasis on sharply defined edges, overlapping forms, clear composition, hard lines, minimal texture, and vibrant, pure color. The prominent leaf shapes in these paintings embody feminine energy, while the sinuous curves allude to the geography and streets where these women lived, drawing parallels to the discriminatory practice of redlining and the racially restrictive covenants that created housing inequality in American cities. Edmonds points to the paradox of these trailblazing Black women once owning the very land of some of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the United States

Throughout her career, Edmonds has been revisiting and redefining traditional Western color theory, exploring how profoundly color relates to emotion and trauma, and are thus able to express visual cues about power and systemic disenfranchisement. Edmonds has amplified these concepts in her public art, having recently completed a mural in La Jolla (Ebony on Draper and Girard) to honor the legacy of Black pioneers. By incorporating the forgotten narratives of Black Americans into her canvases and public art, the artist not only gives prominence to their stories, but encourages a dialogue about race, nationality, gender, and politics and the complex overlap of these identities. Extraordinary paintings that convey an infinite combination of colors with the inner cultural meaning of each color plus the notion of making it with all the time needed no matter what.

Alix Le Méléder is the quintessence of what the construction of an artist would ideally be: an obsessive creativity based on time and perseverance no matter what.

A path to radicalism

At a time she was successful with the colors dancing on the canvas, she preferred to go farther and she continued to dig out more by taking the path of radicalism. She lost a few on the side but she knew she was about to find “something”. And she did. Obviously her paintings with the four traces on each side need a close lecture. At first sight it is colorful but the more you look at it the more intense it becomes. One can physically feel the tension inherent to each trace but also between each one. Besides each painting has its own tension and that tension you see does not looks like another tension on another painting. Very fascinating indeed.

A large and comprehensive retrospective of Alix Le Meleder’s work at the Tour’s Castle (in France in 2020) allowed the public to progressively immerse in that physicality.

June Edmonds’s Flag Paintings explore the American flag as a malleable symbol of ideals, promises, and identity and create space for the inclusion of multivalent identities that consider race, nationality, gender, and political leanings. Each painting is associated with the narrative of an African American, past or present, a current event, or an anecdote from American history. Color has played an especially important role in the intersection of Edmonds’s personal, political, and artistic journeys. Color associations can be tied to culturally symbolic imagery, trauma, and emotion, giving color the unique discursive ability to communicate about power and systemic disenfranchisement.
