Tucked into the Sonoran Desert just outside Tucson, the setting alone is enough to reset your nervous system. The mountains glow pink at sunset, the air is dry and warm, and everything about the property feels intentionally quiet.

Miraval is part of the Hyatt portfolio, and it’s one of the places where Hyatt points can unlock an experience that would otherwise be quite expensive.

In my case, I booked the stay using a combination of Hyatt points and a Hyatt Privé rate — which ended up working out perfectly.

What Makes Miraval Different

Miraval isn’t a typical luxury resort where the goal is to lounge by the pool all day, though there are beautiful pools if that’s what you want.

Instead, the experience revolves around activities, wellness programming, and time spent outdoors.

Each day you can choose from dozens of options, like:

• Yoga and meditation classes
• Guided hikes in the desert
• Sound healing sessions
• Equine therapy experiences
• Fitness classes and workshops
• Culinary demonstrations

Some activities are included, while others require additional credits or fees. The schedule is packed enough that you could easily fill every hour of the day if you wanted to.

But you don’t have to.

One of the things I appreciated most about Miraval is that it doesn’t pressure you into being constantly productive about your wellness. Some guests are running from class to class. Others are reading by the pool all afternoon. Both approaches fit perfectly.

Rooms and the Upgrade I Received

Miraval accommodations are designed to be peaceful and understated rather than flashy.

When I booked my stay, I used a combination of Hyatt points and a Hyatt Privé rate, which is a partner program Hyatt offers through select travel advisors (if you’re interested in a Hyatt Prive, booking, get in touch as I’m an advisor).

Even though the stay involved points, the Privé booking still allowed the hotel to prioritize my reservation for upgrades, and I ended up receiving a really lovely room upgrade upon arrival.

That said, I wish I’d opted for a room with a mountain view. I went for the lowest category and I think an upgrade from a mountain view room to a suite would have been even more amazing.

The Setting: The Sonoran Desert at Its Best

The property sits in a beautiful stretch of the Sonoran Desert with the Santa Catalina Mountains rising behind it just outside of Tucson, right at the bottom of Arizona, meaning winters are mild and summers are HOT. I visited in February and though there was some desert rain, it didn’t bother me at all and added to the coziness of the experience.

This landscape has a very specific energy. It’s quiet, open, and full of subtle colors — soft greens from the cacti, deep rust tones in the rocks, and golden light that seems to last forever in the evenings.

Sunrise hikes quickly became one of my favorite parts of the stay. Watching the desert slowly wake up while the mountains catch the first light is one of those simple experiences that feels grounding.

The Food (Which Is Surprisingly Good)

One concern people sometimes have about wellness resorts is the food.

You imagine tiny portions of quinoa and kale.

Miraval does focus on nutritious, balanced meals, but the food here is varied and although the breakfast and lunch were fine – nothing out of this world – the dinners were truly delicious.

The approach is more about thoughtful ingredients and balanced cooking rather than strict dieting.

It never felt restrictive.

The Spa and Wellness Experiences

The Life in Balance Spa is one of the highlights of the property.

Like the rest of Miraval, it’s designed around calm spaces and desert views. There are indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, quiet pools, steam rooms, and a long list of treatments inspired by different wellness traditions.

If you plan to book treatments, it’s worth scheduling them in advance since they fill up quickly.

Even if you skip treatments, the spa facilities alone are worth spending time in as they’re open to anyone staying there. Each night before bed, I did at least an hour of sauna, steam, cold plunge, stargazing, hot tub, repeat.

Booking Miraval with Hyatt Points

Miraval is one of the Hyatt properties where using points can offer really strong value.

Award stays typically include:

• accommodations
• all meals
• select wellness activities
• access to the spa facilities

Given how much programming and dining is included, redeeming points here can feel much more valuable than using them at a typical city hotel.

In my case, pairing the points booking with a Hyatt Privé rate helped maximize the overall experience, especially when it came to the room upgrade.

Is Miraval Arizona Worth It?

If you’re looking for a traditional luxury resort with nightlife and beach clubs, this probably isn’t the right fit.

But if you want a place that genuinely helps you unplug — somewhere you can move your body, learn something new, spend time outside, and leave feeling reset — Miraval does that incredibly well.

It’s not about escaping life completely.

It’s more about stepping out of the noise long enough to remember what it feels like to be present.

What Benefits Does Hyatt Privé Include?

Benefits vary slightly by property, but typically include:

To put that into perspective, breakfast at many Park Hyatt or Andaz properties can easily cost $50–$70 per person per day. Over a three-night stay, that alone could be $300–$400 in value, before you even use the property credit.

And that’s without factoring in a potential upgrade.

How Does Hyatt Privé Work?

Hyatt Privé is an invitation-only partner program between Hyatt and select travel advisors. It applies to participating luxury brands within Hyatt’s portfolio, including:

• Park Hyatt
• Alila
• Andaz
• Miraval
• Grand Hyatt (select properties)
• Thompson (select properties)

You can simply reach out to an advisor who is part of the program, let them know the hotel and dates and room type, and see what the Prive rates are for your stay.

Sometimes the rate is the same as the best available rate, sometimes it’s slightly higher but still worth it, and sometimes it won’t make sense.

The process is, you’ll get the rates, give the agent your billing info, and they will make the booking via the Hyatt Prive advisor portal.

You still earn World of Hyatt points.
You still receive elite night credit.
Your reservation still appears in your Hyatt account.

The booking is held directly with the hotel.

The only difference is that you receive additional perks attached to your stay.

Is Hyatt Privé More Expensive?

It depends.

Hyatt Privé for some resorts will be the same best rate you’re seeing on the Hyatt website. For others, it may run higher but the perks may outweigh the extra cost (which is usually not more than a few percentage points more).

If you’re comparing flexible vs. flexible, the cost is the same. The difference is that Privé adds perks.

Most travelers booking luxury hotels are already choosing flexible rates for peace of mind. In that case, Privé is essentially added value at the same price.

Is This Really Still a Direct Booking?

Yes.

This is where confusion tends to happen.

When a Hyatt Privé reservation is made:

• It is confirmed directly with Hyatt
• It shows up in your World of Hyatt account
• You earn points
• You receive elite status benefits
• You can manage the booking through Hyatt

It is not an online travel agency booking.

You are not giving up control of your reservation.

You’re simply adding a partner layer to it.

Can I Combine with Hyatt Points?

Unfortunately, when booking with points, you’re not able to stack agent benefits on top.

However, if you’re only booking some nights on points and planning the rest with cash then, yes, you can book the stays separately then we can help you link them with the hotel. It’s best to book the same room type so you’re not having to switch partway through.

Hyatt Privé isn’t a loophole or a hack. It’s simply a partner program most travelers don’t know about.

If you’re already booking luxury Hyatt properties, it’s worth checking whether your stay qualifies.

I read forums and tried to get a sense of which was better before we went, but I couldn’t decide, so we spent three nights at each one this month.

If you’re choosing between them, here’s the stuff that actually affects your days, your meals, your kid’s mood, and whether you feel like you’re on a retreat or on a classic resort vacation.

The vibe: secluded and peaceful vs. classic resort energy

Montage Kapalua Bay (pictured above) felt almost like it was hiding. Part of that is the location — Kapalua feels quieter, more tucked away, and there aren’t big resorts stacked right next door. Add the fact that Montage is only around 70 residences, and it just naturally feels more peaceful. Less foot traffic, less noise, fewer “events,” more exhale.

Four Seasons Maui is more of that iconic Maui resort experience. You’re in Wailea, which is well-connected and walkable in that “resort-to-resort” way. There’s a little more buzz. Not spring break chaos — just more going on around you. If you like feeling like you’re in the center of things (without it being overwhelming), with easy access to shopping, golf, and a wealth of restaurants, Wailea delivers.

Beach: snorkeling paradise vs. gentle waves you can actually play in

This was the biggest functional difference for us.

Montage / Kapalua Bay is an amazing snorkeling beach. It’s calm, clear, there are lots of turtles, and it’s the kind of water that makes you want to grab a mask and stay out there. But it’s not really the beach I’d pick if the goal is chasing waves or boogie boarding. It’s more “float, snorkel, spot turtles” than “run, jump, ride.” It was perfect for us as we took turns snorkeling and playing in the gentle waves with our toddler. We also saw tons of whale spouts – dozens per day – and had gorgeous views of Lanai and Molokai in the distance, and a full-on sunset view.

Four Seasons / Wailea had crystal clear water and slightly bigger waves — still gentle, but enough to make it fun. Our three-year-old was old enough to go past the small break with us, and it felt like the perfect setup for boogie boarding as kids get a bit bigger. We saw turtles here too, though far fewer, and whales in the distance, but the main draw was simply how good the water felt for actual play. You can catch the sunset from the beach, though it’s a bit angled.

Food: cook-at-home flexibility vs. lots of choices and zero effort (but more cost)

This is perhaps the biggest difference between the two resorts, along with the amount of space you get at the Montage vs. Four Seasons:

Montage is set up for people who are happy cooking sometimes. Every residence has a full kitchen (ours even had a wine fridge, real oven, full fridge, etc.), and honestly that’s part of the point. The tradeoff is that onsite dinner options are limited — think one main dinner restaurant plus in-room dining. It’s not a “pick between four restaurants tonight” kind of resort.

Four Seasons is the opposite experience: more restaurant choices (they have four onsite restaurants), and you can’t cook unless even if you want to as they don’t have kitchens or residences. Being based in Wailea makes it easy to switch things up — you’re near other resorts, so you can wander for a different meal or vibe without it becoming a whole mission.

They have an incredible breakfast buffet, though. Just make sure you book through a Four Seasons Preferred Provider so that it’s included in your stay ($120 daily value!).

Rooms and layouts: bigger group friendly vs. classic suite convenience

Montage is a dream for bigger groups because it’s all residences, and they go up to multi-bedroom villas (up to four bedrooms). You get real separation, multiple bedrooms, in-unit laundry, full kitchens, multiple dining areas, grills, in our case 4 bathrooms for our 3-bedroom residence, big lanais… the whole “everyone can be together without being on top of each other” thing.

Four Seasons still worked great for us as a family because of our suite setup — we had an executive suite with a closing door and a pull-out couch, which made evenings and early bedtimes way easier. But this is a room that normally goes for $3500/night, which would be more affordable if booking Montage, and with more space. If you’re traveling with another family, grandparents, or a full crew and want everyone under one roof, Montage has the advantage.

Pools: quiet corners vs. classic resort comfort

Both resorts have surprisingly similar waterslides in terms of size — small, approachable, and perfect for younger kids rather than thrill-seeking teens. The difference is really in how the pool experience feels once you’re there.

At Montage Kapalua Bay, the pool is honestly one of the best we’ve seen anywhere. It was recently revamped, and it shows. The layout is layered and expansive, with multiple levels, tucked-away sections, and little nooks that make it easy to feel like you’ve carved out your own space. Even when other families were around, it rarely felt crowded. You could settle into one corner and almost forget there was anyone else there.

The Four Seasons Maui pool experience feels more traditional – but not in a bad way. It’s polished, social, and very comfortable. One thing we really appreciated was that there are cabanas available that you don’t have to pay extra for, which isn’t always the case at resorts at this level – though they will fill up with people arriving at 7am to snag a spot. While we never made it in time for the prime locations, we were always able to find something. It made it easier to post up for the afternoon without feeling like you had to strategize or commit to a spend. The service was very attentive, which is what FS is known for.

If you love finding a quiet pocket and staying put for hours, Montage’s pool wins. If you like a classic resort pool setup with easy comfort and thoughtful touches like included cabanas, Four Seasons does it really well.

Service: both great, but Four Seasons does that Four Seasons thing

The service at both was excellent. You’ll truly want for nothing at either spot.

Montage felt warm and calm and attentive — and the twice-daily housekeeping in a full residence was honestly kind of wild (they even did the dishes we left in the sink). They even brought a full cake for my partner’s birthday, and left such thoughtful touches in the room for our toddler as well. They’re partnered with UPPAbaby, so they have strollers and cribs onsite of the highest quality.

And Four Seasons is legendary for a reason. It had that signature smoothness where everything is immaculate, everything runs on time, and you’re never thinking about logistics because someone already handled it. Housekeeping knew our names. Valet was genuinely helpful when we were figuring out where to go for the day. It’s what Four Seasons is known for across properties — that quiet competence that makes you feel like you can actually relax.

Also: Four Seasons has a free photo service that I wish more resorts did. It’s a quick ~10-minute session where a photographer takes photos using your phone, so you get them immediately without a gallery, waiting, or awkward upsell.

So… which one wins?

It depends on what kind of trip you’re trying to have. Here’s how I’d call it.

Pick Montage Kapalua Bay (full review here) if you want:

• Maximum peace and quiet
• A secluded part of Maui without big resorts right next door
• A snorkeling-first beach (turtles, calm water)
• A place that works beautifully for bigger groups (multi-bedroom residences)
• The option to cook and spread out like you actually live there

While this is very much a 5-star luxury resort, the value/amount of space you get for your money at Montage will be higher. For the price of an executive suite at the Four Seasons, you can get a 2-3-bedroom villa at the Montage with a full kitchen and beautiful view.

If I had to sum it up in one line: Montage is the calm, residential reset. Four Seasons is the classic Maui resort vacation with legendary service and easier food variety.

There’s something about the light here, the water, and how easy everything feels. We slipped into a rhythm almost right away — beach in the morning, pool time later, building sand castles as the sun started to drop. It felt like classic Maui in the best way.

So is it worth staying in what is arguably Maui’s most elite hotel? I think so! Here’s why:

That beach (and why it worked so well with a three-year-old)

What I loved most about this stay was the beach. The water is crystal clear — the kind where you can see straight down and keep staying in longer than planned because the temperature is just so perfect.

The waves were a little bigger than at the Montage at Kapalua Bay, but not in a way that felt intimidating. For our three-year-old, it was actually perfect. He was old enough to come with us past the small break and really enjoy the ocean instead of just standing at the edge. I kept thinking how great this would be for boogie boarding as kids get a bit bigger — and best of all they had a trunk full of beach toys and boogie boards right on the beach for the taking.

We also spotted turtles here and could see whales in the distance, especially when we lingered by the water. It reminded me of why Maui is so magical and unique amongst the islands of Hawaii. Maui is particularly beautiful, and there’s a lot to do – or not do – if you’re staying at a resort as relaxing as the Four Seasons. To be honest, we rarely left.

Pools that keep kids entertained (without overwhelming you)

We split our time between the beach and the pools, and the setup here worked surprisingly well for different ages.

There’s a pool with a small waterslide that felt just right for younger kids — fun without being chaotic — and the large fountain pool ended up being a favorite for cooling off and dipping in the hot tubs.

One of my favorite aspects is most of the cabanas here don’t cost extra to use. They’re first come, first served, but even though the hotel was fully booked when we were there, we were always able to find one. If we couldn’t the attendant would go looking for us.

That brings me to the biggest plus of the Four Seasons – the service.

The kind of service Four Seasons is known for

The service here was exactly what you expect from Four Seasons — and honestly, why we keep coming back to their properties (read our Four Seasons Chiang Mai review).

Housekeeping knew our names. Not in a forced way, just casually, like they actually remembered us. The valets were endlessly helpful, whether it was figuring out where we were headed for the day or offering suggestions without overstepping. Everything ran smoothly and quietly in the background. The rooms were immaculate every time we came back, and nothing ever felt missed or delayed.

It’s the same feeling we’ve had at other Four Seasons properties — things just work. You’re never thinking about logistics, because someone else already has.

They also offer a free photo service that felt almost too good to be true. It’s a quick 10-minute session with a photographer who uses your phone, so the photos are instantly yours. We got great family photos without having to ask a stranger or use a tripod (see above), which, on its own, feels like a small luxury.

Our executive suite setup

We stayed in an executive suite, and that layout mattered more than I expected.

There was a closing door between spaces and a pull-out couch, which meant bedtime didn’t end the evening for everyone else. We could still talk, read, or decompress without whispering in the dark. It’s one of those details that sounds minor but completely changes how livable a hotel feels with kids. We also had a separate entrance to the lanai, which had this view:

Everything felt exactly as you’d expect from Four Seasons — intuitive, comfortable, and quietly thoughtful.

Kids for All Seasons and easy family rhythms

Four Seasons’ Kids For All Seasons program is available here, along with a kids club, and it fit seamlessly into the stay. The programming is there when you want it, easy to skip when you don’t, and never feels like you’re being pushed into a schedule. It’s available for kids aged 4 and up.

Why we’d return

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea felt easy in the way the best trips do. The beach alone would be reason enough to come back, especially as kids get more confident in the water. Add in the pools, the walkability, and how well it works for families without feeling like a “family resort,” and it’s a place that just makes sense.

It’s not trying to reinvent Maui. It’s just doing it really, really well.

As tempting as it is to just keep coming back, I can’t wait to spend more time at the Four Seasons on the Big Island and Four Seasons Ko’olina on Oahu too!

Maui can start to blur together after a while – a lot of resorts are lovely in similar ways. This one didn’t feel interchangeable.

From the moment we arrived, everything felt…calm. There was no chaos, no sense of millions of people sharing the resort with us. We fell into an easy rhythm almost immediately — slow mornings, long afternoons by the pool, evenings where we realized we hadn’t actually planned anything and didn’t feel like we needed to.

As a ultra luxury resort with only 70 units, this is a boutique experience that’s hard to find on Maui, and with units that each have a separate sitting area and a full kitchen, the value is amazing, too. Was it worth it? We thought so, and I can’t wait to go back.

A pool that actually works for toddlers

The pool ended up being a much bigger part of our stay than I expected. Marriott recently revamped it and added a waterslide, and for once it wasn’t one of those “this is technically kid-friendly but emotionally stressful” situations.

The slide is perfect for toddlers. It’s gentle, fun, and endlessly repeatable. I estimate my son did 75 rounds of it! We’d settle in and just… stay. There’s plenty of space, shallow areas that make it easy for little kids, and with how many different pools and levels and swim, throughs there were, there was none of that frantic energy you sometimes get at resort pools.

Kapalua Bay and the kind of snorkeling you don’t have to plan

One of the biggest reasons this property works so well is its location above Kapalua Bay. You walk down and you’re immediately at one of the best snorkeling spots on Maui, which is already one of the most famous islands in Hawaii for its beaches. It has calm water with baby waves my son loved, great visibility, and turtles that seem to treat the bay like their personal hangout.

It’s the kind of place where you can pop down to the beach without turning it into an expedition. We went back and forth between the pool and the ocean all day without ever feeling like we had to commit to one or the other.

Why the residences make such a difference

Every unit at Marriott Kapalua Bay (browse room types here) is a full residence, and this is where the stay really shifted from “nice hotel” to “this feels livable.”

We were in a 3-bedroom prime oceanfront unit, and it became our favorite place for breakfast and sunset. Our unit had a full kitchen with a real oven, full-size fridge, and a wine fridge, plus an in-unit washer and dryer that we were beyond grateful for midway through our Maui trip. The bedrooms were huge, with walk-in closets, and the lanai was massive — right on a knoll above the beach with an open view, a grill, and enough seating that eating outside didn’t feel like a hassle.

There was also a separate sitting room with a pull-out couch and a closing door, which is great for families traveling with larger groups. Being able to create another sleeping space without sacrificing the living room made everything quieter and easier, especially with different sleep schedules.

Winter whales, without the boat tour

We were there during whale season, and it’s impossible not to notice them. Spouts everywhere, and breaches if you linger long enough. Montage offers a complimentary morning whale-watching program at their Cliff House, and it was a great way to learn more about the seasonal visitors.

Coffee in hand, standing quietly on the cliffs, watching whales pass by without boats or crowds didn’t feel like an activity so much as being allowed to witness something special.

There are also free activities for kids, like feeding the fish in the koi pond every morning at 9:30.

Hotel service, without the trade-offs

Even though these are residences, you still get full hotel service — and they don’t cut corners. Housekeeping came twice a day. More than once we came back from the beach to made beds, fresh towels, and a kitchen that had somehow reset itself — including dishes we’d left in the sink.

It felt like having the space of a vacation rental with the ease of a hotel, which is a combination that’s surprisingly hard to get right.

They also have a divine onsite spa – truly one of my favorites to date – with a steam room, sauna, individual treatment huts with the view shown above, its own pool, and gorgeous views. I had the Lomi lomi massage and would 100% recommend.

There are also plenty of food options onsite. In addition to a pool service and poolside restaurant, there’s also Cane and Canoe, which is perfect for an elevated breakfast or dinner, and in-room dining, which we opted for in the mornings on our Lanai.

One of the easiest family stays in Maui

By the end of the trip, it was clear why Marriott Kapalua Bay works so well for families, especially larger ones. The residences go up to four bedrooms, and nothing about the stay felt like a compromise — not on space, not on service, not on location.

Some hotels try to wow you. This one did that and made everything feel easier. And honestly, that’s what made it magical.

How I use Amex Points to Maximize Value

Look at the extra point categories offered by Amex and see what you can maximize. I love that flights booked directly with the airline are worth 5x points, so I exclusively use our Amex to book flights (which are then insured under the card’s travel insurance).

While you can use your points to offset a travel purchase, your points could be worth more if you transfer them to an Amex partner. For example, those 107,000 points I used for the Singapore Airlines flight would be worth $1070 toward my flight if booked through Amex’s booking portal, but by transferring to Singapore Airlines, I got more than a $5000 value (the ticket’s list price).

Airline Transfer Partners

American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred to several airline loyalty programs, often at a 1:1 ratio. Here are some of the key airline transfer partners and how you can use them to your advantage:

1. Delta SkyMiles:
   • Delta is a key transfer partner for Amex, which is a partnership few other banks have. While its award pricing can be unpredictable, it offers a wide network of routes. Points transferred to Delta SkyMiles can be used for flights within the U.S., as well as international travel, often with no blackout dates.
2. British Airways Executive Club:
   • Transfer your points to British Airways to book award flights on Oneworld partners like American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines. The Avios program is particularly useful for short-haul flights, as it operates on a distance-based award chart.
3. Air Canada Aeroplan:
   • Aeroplan offers excellent value for flights on Star Alliance partners, including United, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines. The program has no fuel surcharges on award tickets, making it a cost-effective option for both short and long-haul flights.
4. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer:
   • Singapore Airlines is renowned for its premium cabin products. Transferring points to KrisFlyer can help you book award seats in their coveted Suites Class, as well as business and first-class cabins.
5. Emirates Skywards:
   • Emirates offers luxurious travel experiences, especially in first and business class. By transferring points to Skywards, you can book award flights on Emirates’ renowned A380 first-class suites or business class, making for a memorable journey.
6. ANA Mileage Club:
   • ANA offers some of the best value redemptions for international flights, particularly from North America to Asia. Their round-trip awards are often more economical in terms of points than one-way tickets, making it a great option for those planning longer trips.

Hotel Transfer Partners

Hotel Transfer Partners In addition to airline partners, American Express Membership Rewards points can also be transferred to hotel loyalty programs. Here are the primary hotel transfer partners and how you can leverage them for high-value stays:

1. Marriott Bonvoy:
   • Marriott Bonvoy has one of the most extensive networks of hotels globally, from budget-friendly properties to luxury resorts. Points can be transferred to Marriott Bonvoy to book stays at iconic brands like The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and W Hotels. The transfer ratio is typically 1:1, allowing for easy accumulation of points for free nights.
2. Hilton Honors:
   • Hilton Honors points can be used at over 6,000 properties worldwide, including high-end brands like Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, and LXR. The typical transfer ratio is 1:2, meaning 1,000 Membership Rewards points equal 2,000 Hilton Honors points. This can be especially useful for booking stays at luxurious properties like the Waldorf Astoria Grand Wilea in Maui.
3. Choice Privileges:
   • While not as luxurious as Marriott or Hilton, Choice Hotels offers good value for mid-tier properties. The transfer ratio is typically 1:1, and points can be used for stays at brands like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, and Cambria Hotels.

Maximizing Value Through Transfers

To get the most out of your Membership Rewards points, consider the following strategies:

1. Look for Transfer Bonuses:
   • American Express occasionally offers transfer bonuses to specific partners, which can significantly boost the value of your points. For example, a 30% bonus when transferring to British Airways Executive Club can turn 10,000 Membership Rewards points into 13,000 Avios.
2. Book Premium Cabins:
   • Transferring points to book business or first-class flights often provides the best value. Programs like Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Emirates Skywards are known for their premium products, and using points for these experiences can offer outsized value compared to economy bookings.
3. Leverage Alliance Partners:
   • Many airline loyalty programs allow you to book flights on partner airlines within their alliances. For example, transferring points to Air Canada Aeroplan can be used to book flights on Star Alliance partners, increasing your options and potentially finding better award availability.

The Downsides: Crowded Lounges and Limited Guest Access

While the Amex Platinum Card offers a plethora of benefits, it’s not without its drawbacks. One of the main issues is the overcrowding in airport lounges. The popularity of the card and its lounge benefits has led to packed Centurion Lounges, often making it difficult to find a seat or enjoy the amenities. This can be particularly frustrating during peak travel times.

Additionally, American Express has recently implemented stricter guest policies for lounge access. Previously, cardholders could bring in two guests for free, making it convenient for families and couples. However, the new policy limits complimentary guest access, requiring cardholders to pay a fee for each guest. This change significantly reduces the lounge benefit’s value for those traveling with others, making it less family-friendly.

Conclusion: Why I Keep the Amex Platinum Card

Despite the high annual fee and the downsides of crowded lounges and limited guest access, I find the Amex Platinum Card to be an indispensable tool in my wallet. The sheer number of benefits and credits available easily offsets the fee, and the flexibility of Membership Rewards points provides immense value. The biggest key for me is the 5x points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline. Since it’s one of our biggest expenses, those add up quickly.

The card’s elite status with major hotel chains, and the ability to transfer points to a wide range of airline and hotel partners further enhance its value. Even with the lounge access limitations, the convenience and comfort offered by the Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs, and Priority Pass lounges add a significant advantage to my travel experiences.

In essence, the Amex Platinum Card is much more than just a status symbol; it’s a powerful tool that, when used wisely, offers tremendous value and convenience. For frequent travelers and those who can take full advantage of its benefits, the card’s annual fee is a small price to pay for the luxury, convenience, and savings it provides.

Arrival and Overall Feel

You don’t walk into Banyan Tree so much as you’re eased into it. Located around 45 minutes from Cancun airport, just past the Ruta de Cenotes towards Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba is a serene getaway tucked behind several miles of mangrove. Check-in happens calmly, seated, and without a lot of back and forth. From there, everything is water, greenery, and quiet pathways.

The resort is built around lagoons and mangroves, so even moving from place to place feels peaceful. You hear birds constantly. Mornings are especially calm, and evenings feel unhurried.

Despite being part of the larger Mayakoba complex, Banyan Tree feels entirely separate once you’re inside, yet you can easily take a duffy boat or golf cart to any of the other resorts and their restaurants as well – Rosewood Mayakoba, Fairmont Mayakoba, and soon to be the Alila Mayakoba.

The Villas and Living Space

Every guest stays in a private villa with its own pool, and that single detail shapes the entire experience.

Our villa — one of the newly renovated 3 bedroom villas — felt more like a small residence than a hotel room. High ceilings, lots of space, and a layout that made sense for spending real time there. There was an indoor living area, outdoor space, and a pool that felt secluded rather than on display.

There were 4 bathrooms, the main with a deep soaking tub and plenty of room to spread out. It was the kind of space you actually want to use, not just pass through.

Traveling with a child, this setup made everything easier. Naps didn’t require tiptoeing around. Early bedtimes didn’t mean the night was over for us. We could order room service, swim outside, and still feel relaxed.

Getting Around the Resort

The resort is spread out, but moving around never felt inconvenient. You get around by bike or boat, and both quickly become part of the rhythm of the stay rather than something to manage. Our toddler loved both the golf carts and the boat, so it was all part of the experience for him.

Boat rides are slow and quiet. Bikes are easy and flat, and kids tend to love them. If you don’t feel like moving at all, staff are quick to come get you. Everyone and everything you need is just a call or Whatsapp message away.

Nothing about the layout feels rushed or chaotic.

Pools, Beach, and Outdoor Time

The beach area is calm and understated, on a white sand beach with perfectly calm waters that are baby blue hued. No loud music, no packed loungers, and no pressure to claim a spot early. It’s a place where people actually read books and stay a while. It was our favorite spot at the whole resort.

The shared pool areas are lovely, but having a private pool often meant we didn’t feel the need to leave our villa unless we wanted to.

This setup works especially well for families with younger kids. There’s room to splash, play, and relax without constantly packing up and moving locations.

Food and Dining

Food at Banyan Tree Mayakoba is consistently good, but what stood out more than anything was how unique it felt.

Our favorite experience was dining at Saffron, the Thai restaurant with decks right on the water (both with and without rails depending on what makes you most comfortable with little kids). It was delicious and such a fun experience dining right on the water while looking at sea turtles and fish.

The breakfast (we especially loved the beach club!), Italian restaurant, cello, and room service were great, too.

What It’s Like With Kids

Banyan Tree Mayakoba works well for families who want calm rather than stimulation.

There’s space to roam, privacy to retreat to, and an overall environment where kids are welcome without the resort being overtly kid focused. That said, there’s a kids club with a little pool, climbing area, daily activities, and in the evenings, the private villa setup does most of the heavy lifting with plenty of room for everyone and the rooftop pool.

Final Thoughts

Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a large resort that’s part of a larger complex that still somehow feels quiet, spacious, and intentionally designed to slow you down.

First Impressions and Location

One of the biggest wins here is how close it is to the airport. After a flight with a child, the fact that the resort is only about 15 minutes from Cancun International Airport cannot be overstated. We were checked in and looking out at the Caribbean in what felt like no time at all.

Despite the proximity, it feels surprisingly secluded. Mangroves surround the property, the ocean stretches endlessly in front of you, and once you’re there, the outside world fades away quickly.

Yet you’re still close enough to Cenotes, Playa del Carmen, and can even do a day trip to Tulum if you feel like exploring while you’re there.

The Look and Feel of the Resort

The design is classic Waldorf Astoria in the best way. Lots of marble, soft neutral tones, clean lines, and a very grown up, elegant feel that still works for families. It feels luxe without trying too hard.

One thing I really appreciated is that this is not a massive resort. You don’t need golf carts to get around or a map to find your way back to the room. Everything is walkable, which makes the whole experience feel calmer and more intimate.

This is something I’ve seen echoed again and again in other reviews too. Guests love that it feels peaceful and refined without the sprawl that can make some Riviera Maya resorts feel exhausting.

Rooms with a View

The rooms are stunning. Floor to ceiling windows let in so much light, and the ocean views are genuinely impressive. Waking up to that stretch of blue every morning felt indulgent in the best way.

The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully laid out, with marble bathrooms, deep soaking tubs, and plenty of room to spread out. Our suite had a tub on the balcony, locks on the doors that are too high for little kids to reach, an expansive balcony, a completely separate sitting room, two bathrooms, and a huge walk in closet. Even with a child, it never felt cramped or chaotic.

It’s the kind of room you actually want to be in, not just sleep in.

Food That Actually Delivers

Resort dining can be hit or miss, but this is one area where the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya really shines (and if you’ve stayed at famous resorts in Mexico before, you’ll know we can’t say the same for all of them!). The food is consistently good, with menus that feel intentional rather than generic.

This is something other guests mention often, and we felt the same. Whether it was breakfast, poolside lunch, or dinner, the quality was there and the service felt attentive without hovering. It was easy to stay on property and never feel like we were settling when it came to meals.

A Surprisingly Family Friendly Luxury Resort

While the overall vibe leans refined and serene, this resort works very well for families with younger kids. The pools are especially well designed, with extensive shallow areas that make it easy and safe for little ones to play.

The layout makes it simple to keep an eye on kids without feeling like you’re in a loud, kid centric environment. It’s a balance that’s hard to get right, but they manage it here. Calm enough for parents to truly relax, welcoming enough that families feel comfortable.

While there’s no dedicated kids’ club, there are daily activities in the lobby that kids can join, from painting wrestling masks to making jewelry.

Final Thoughts

The Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya feels like a smart choice for travelers who want luxury without excess and ease without sacrificing quality. The design is beautiful, the food is excellent, the setting is serene, and the scale of the resort keeps everything feeling simple and relaxed.

Family-Friendly Amenities

The baby concierge was the first sign that Grand Velas understands families in a real, practical way. When we opened the door to our suite, we had an adorable tipee set up, and if you’re traveling with a baby everything you needed is already there — the crib made up, the bottle warmer, bouncer, stroller, tiny bath supplies arranged next to the sink. It’s one of the more thorough and thoughtful baby friendly hotels we’ve come across.

The pools became the center of our days. There are several, each a little different, and the smaller mini cabanas set up for kids were an adorable surprise. At one point our concierge appeared with a stack of pool toys, and that small gesture became my son’s highlight of the pool.

The kids’ club and teens’ club are airy and well designed, with staff who seem genuinely happy to have the children there. Activities change throughout the day, and the space itself feels clean, safe, and inviting. Because the clubs stay open until 11 p.m., parents are able to have dinners without kids if they want to (kids aged 4 and above can be left at the kids club while kids under 4 require a parent or nanny – GV does have a nanny service).

Back in the room, the staff set up a special bath surprise and pizza party (at my request), and watching our child run toward it with excitement felt like the kind of moment you hope for on family trips.

The Food

An all inclusive is only as good as its food – you’ve already prepaid for it, so you certainly want it to be amazing!

Grand Velas’ dining scene is one of the reasons it stands out. Cocina de Autor holds a Michelin star, and the tasting menu was one of the most memorable meals we’ve had in a resort setting. The service was intentional without being stiff, and the dishes were layered and surprising in the best way.

This fine dining restaurant is adults-only, but the timing works because the kids’ club serves dinner.

For more casual nights, restaurants like Friday and Lucca worked perfectly. The menus were broad, the service warm, and there was always something our child wanted to eat without feeling like we were sacrificing quality.

We loved that we could order room service, enjoy the buffet at Azul, get poolside smoothies, and generally not worry about anything during our stay. Though I don’t drink, my husband said the wine pairing with the Cocina de Autor was delicious.

The Rooms

There are three sections to the resort – Ambassador suites (family friendly), Grand Class (adults only) and Zen, which is in the mangroves/jungle. Each area has its own pool, and both Zen and Ambassador have kids clubs. Zen even has a kids’ spa for kids aged 5-12.

We stayed in an oceanfront Ambassador pool suite and it was lovely.

Our suite felt calm and spacious, with enough room that no one was stepping over anyone else’s things, and it became the quiet place where we started each morning. At night, the sounds of the ocean were soothing and made the space feel even more removed from everything we had left behind.

Service at the resort was steady and unobtrusive. Everyone we met seemed genuinely invested in making the stay easier, and the consistency of that experience is part of what makes the property feel so polished. You also have access to a personal concierge throughout your stay, always available via Whatsapp.

The Spa

The spa at Grand Velas feels like a retreat within a retreat. The water ceremony is the centerpiece — a carefully guided sequence through warm pools, cool plunges, steam, and gentle flows of water. Each stage is deliberate and unhurried, giving the experience a meditative rhythm that makes you forget time. Even with other guests nearby, the space feels private, as if it’s been designed to cocoon you in quiet, and is included with any spa treatment.

Treatments continue that sense of calm. Therapists move slowly and attentively, intuitively adjusting pressure and pace to what feels right. By the time the session ends, your body feels lighter, your mind clearer, and the quiet lingers long after you’ve left the spa. It’s the kind of experience that resets both energy and perspective, a rare blend of indulgence and restorative calm.

Final Thoughts

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is one of the few luxury resorts that doesn’t force parents to choose between a beautiful, restorative experience and a place where kids can be happy. It works for families without losing its sense of indulgence, and it feels warm rather than overly scripted.

After backpacking through Vietnam 12 years prior and experiencing a very cold and foggy Ha Long Bay (t had been February, after all) I was AMAZED to see what I’d missed last time. A More Peaceful Bay

Bai Tu Long Bay looks identical to Ha Long in northern Vietnam, with jade-green water and dramatic cliffs rising straight from the sea, but it’s blissfully uncrowded. Most boats stick to Ha Long’s main routes, leaving Bai Tu Long quiet and pristine. That sense of stillness was what made it feel so special. It was the perfect way to wrap up our 5-day trip to the north of Vietnam with our toddler.
