Blue Class had a fantastic time learning about Earth Day!

We learnt about the impact that litter can have on our environment and in our oceans.

We learnt about how long plastic can take to decompose and the importance of recycling.

We even had a go at picking up our own litter safely and we then sorted it into the correct recycling bins!

Measuring in Maths

This week we have been measuring in maths.

We have been using the vocabulary - shorter and longer for length, shorter and taller for height!

We placed ourselves in height order.

We placed objects in order of their length from shortest to longest.

We used a non standard measurement of cubes to measure classroom objects and today we have been using rulers!

Can anyone remember what we measure in when we use a ruler?

Red Nose Day 2021

We had an excellent day raising money for Comic Relief!

We learnt about where our money goes and how important it is and we really enjoyed dressing up as superheroes and telling our jokes.

Transparent and Opaque

In Science we have been focusing on everyday materials and their properties.

We have already tested to see if materials are absorbent and waterproof.

We have now tested which materials are transparent and which are opaque. We tested whether light would pass through the materials and if we could see through the material clearly. We then catergorised the materials based on their properties.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Tea Party!

In Year 1 we have been focusing on 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea'. We have already used a range of nouns, verbs and adjectives to write a character description about the tiger!

We had our own tea party in school based on the story, we started off by having a snack and a cup of juice on the carpet whilst we read the story. We then enjoyed playing a range of games such as sleeping tigers, a teabag hunt, we used play dough to make treats, paper chains to decorate and we even played a memory game. We had lots of fun and we have planned our recounts this week, ready to start writing next week!

Testing Materials

In Year 1 we have been learning about everyday materials.

Our Class Bear Bertie needs a new coat so we have been testing materials to find out if they are waterproof or absorbent.

First we made predictions and then we carried out a fair test.

We tested foil, plastic, paper and fabric.

We concluded that plastic would be the most effective material for Bertie's new coat!

We learnt new words such as 'equity', 'contagious' and 'explosive'!

Creative Friday

We had a lovely afternoon in Year 1 on Friday.

We have been looking at Robert Delaunay's art work in our art lessons. We have learned that Delaunay uses bright colours and shapes to create his art, which is a style called 'orphism' which is abstract.

We mixed the three primary colours to explore which secondary colours we could create, ready to recreate our own art work this week using similar styles and techniques as Delaunay.

We discovered red and blue make purple, yellow and blue make green and red and yellow make orange.

On Friday we also celebrated Children In Need. We enjoyed learning about why we dress up and raise money for this charity and we also created our own Pudsey art work.

Partitioning Numbers to 20

This week in maths we have been partitioning numbers to 20 into tens and ones.

We have represented partitioning in lots of different ways.

We have used part-whole models.

We have used dienes.

We have used numicon.

We have also used tens frames!

Remembrance Day

This week we have marked the event of Remembrance Day through creating our own poppy pictures.

We learnt about the soldiers who have bravely fought to keep us safe and we held a 2 minute silence in school today at 11:00.

Amazing Art

In Year 1 we have been focusing on animals in art. We have practiced using a range of lines to create patterns and textures and we have drawn some of the animals from 'Monkey Puzzle'.

Today we created these animals using clay. We learnt how to sculpt, mold, pinch and add texture using tools.

Harvest Festival

Across school we have been celebrating Harvest Festival.

We have been learning about what Harvest Festival is and why we celebrate it.

We have been singing Harvest songs.

We have even had a visitor!

Miss Crump and her family have been growing lots of different foods at her allotment. We were lucky enough to explore some of the different vegetables that Miss Crump has harvested!

Black History Month

We have been learning all about black history in school. We were fortunate to have a virtual assembly with Richard Bain, he told us a story about what it was like for his Dad, who grew up in the Bahamas. We have also been reading a range of fantastic books, our favourite so far is 'Amazing Grace'!

Autumn

In Science we have been learning about the seasons and we have focused on Autumn.

We discussed the changes that happened during this season and we explored outside to see if we could see signs of Autumn.

We looked at the colours of the leaves on the trees and collected some to take back into class to draw our own tree in Autumn. We thought about what we should wear in this season, how long the day is and what events happen!

In Year 1 we have been reading Monkey Puzzle in our English lessons.

We have been using adjectives, nouns and verbs to write sentences.

When we came into our classroom on Monday, Mummy puzzle had left a letter explaining that all of the animals from the story have gone missing.

We went outside into our forest school area to look for clues.

We found feathers, spider webs, elephant foot prints, snake skin and even a banana skin!

In our next few lessons we will be looking at lost posters and we will then make our own to try to track down the animals!

Comparing Numbers

In Year 1 we have been comparing numbers in our maths lessons. We have been using the language 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equal to. We have also been using the symbols ( <,>, =) in our number sentences!

I wonder if you could make your own number sentences out of things you can find at home?

Year 1,

As the circumstances are a little different and we are unable to celebrate your amazing achievements from this year together, we thought we would make you a video. Hello Blue Class!

I hope you are all well, Miss Donald and I are missing you all very much but we've loved seeing your learning this week!

I'm so impressed with Harrison's learning this week! He has researched Jessica Ennis-Hill and created his own fact file, he has applied all of his writing skills in English to create his own leaflet about keeping healthy, he has been solving number problems in maths and using money, Harrison has also categorised animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Wow Harrison!! It has also been an exciting few weeks for Harrison because he was chosen as the home learning superstar, he had a visit from a beekeeper and some of his tadpoles have grown into tiny little frogs!

Riley has been busy at home too. He used play dough, straws and beads to create his own monster! Fantastic Riley!

Hannah has been very busy too! She has been using different coins to create different amounts of money and Hannah even practiced by using coins to pay for something in a shop too, wow! Hannah has been solving number problems and researching the Olympics and Jessica Ennis-Hill too. Well done Hannah! Hannah has also enjoyed a well-earned trip to the seaside with her family and she's been busy building garden furniture as well. You must be worn out from all this fun and learning Hannah! Fantastic!

Oscar has really impressed me this week too. He has been using different coins to represent the same amount of money, he practiced counting in 2's, 5's and 10's using coins too, Oscar has been learning about a range of insects for his Science learning too, he recorded the facts using conjunctions to extend his sentences. Wow! It was a super exciting week for Oscar last week as he received his certificate for being the home learning superstar for all of his hard work! Well done Oscar!!

I'm so impressed by your commitment to your learning and how motivated you still are. Well done Blue Class!

Hi Blue Class!

I hope you've had a lovely weekend.

Hannah has been very resilient and she worked really hard on her learning last week! She counted money to create different amounts and even bought things at her dad's makeshift shop, Hannah has practised her problem-solving skills, she has learned about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and she has sorted animals into these categories. Fantastic as always Hannah, well done!

Oscar continued to work really hard on his learning at home last week too. He can identify the different coins and their value and he made different amounts of money. Oscar has also learnt about which animals are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Oscar even made time to practice his phonics with his furry friend! Wow Oscar, you impress me every week!
