(HOHHOT, August 30) -- The Hohhot leg of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic torch relay successfully concluded after Chen Guoyi lit the flame cauldron in front of Hohhot Stadium in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Saturday, August 30.

According to Xinhua, the relay began at 10:10 a.m. with first torchbearer Yang Zhimin carrying the flame from Genghis Khan Square.

Of the 70 torchbearers that participated in the relay, three took on the task of relaying the flame by riding horses while dressed in traditional Inner Mongolian outfits.

The next stop for the Paralympic torch relay along the "Ancient China" route is the city of Changsha in Hunan province.

China wins first Trampoline Olympic gold medal

(BEIJING, August 18) -- He Wenna won China's first Olympic Games Trampoline gold medal at the National Indoor Stadium on Monday.

He Wenna, who finished fourth in the Individual finals at the 2007 world championships, impressed the judges with a difficult routine that earned her a final score of 37.80 points

Karen Cockburn of Canada won her second Olympic Games silver medal, finishing with 37.00 points. The three-time Olympian's medal collection already includes a bronze medal from Sydney 2000 and a silver from Athens 2004.

Ekaterina Khilko of Uzbekistan was third with a score of 36.90. She was the first to perform and is the first Uzbekistan athlete to win an Olympic Games medal in trampoline.

Anna Dogonadze of Germany, the Athens 2004 gold medalist, fell midway through her routine, taking her out of medal contention. Sydney 2000 gold medalist Irina Karavaeva of the Russian Federation, the current Individual world champion, made a small slip after her voluntary elements and finished in fifth place.

(BEIJING, August 18) -- Defending Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia broke her own world record with 5.05m to win gold in the Women's Pole Vault at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. This was the third time that Isinbayeva set a new world record this year.

Jennifer Stuczynski of the United States cleared 4.80m to take the silver medal, while Athens 2004 silver medalist Svetlana Feofanova of Russia earned bronze with a vault of 4.75m.

Blanik wins the gold medal in the Men's Vault

(BEIJING, August 18) -- Leszek Blanik of Poland scored 16.537 to win the gold medal in the Men's Vault in Beijing on August 18. Thomas Bouhail of France won the silver medal with the same score, but was placed second due to inferior execution.

The bronze medal went to Anton Golotsutskov of Russia who scored 16.475.

Blanik is the first Polish gymnast to win a gold medal in the Men's Vault. The 31-year-old veteran won a bronze medal at Sydney 2000.

Favorite for the gold, Romania's Marian Dragulescu, finished a disappointing fourth. The bronze medalist at Athens 2004 made a mistake on his second vault and it cost him dearly.

"I am unlucky in the Olympics. In Athens I was a favorite, but I made the same mistake like today. I am a multiple world champion, but in the Olympics, I haven't won a gold medal," said Dragulescu after the event.

The United States swept all three medals in the Men's 400m Hurdles final at the National Stadium on August 18. Angelo Taylor, Kerron Clement and Bershawn Jackson won gold, silver and bronze medals with times of 47.25s, 47.98s, and 48.06s respectively.

(BEIJING, August 18) -- He Kexin carried out the most difficult moves tonight in the Uneven Bars, but so did Nastia Liukin of the United States. Both scored 16.725, with even the Score A (a measure of difficulty) of both gymnasts being an identical 7.7. According to the rules of Artistic Gymnastics, the gold medal went to He because she made fewer mistakes than Liukin.

The gold medal is He's second of the Games as she won the gold medal in the Women's Team event on August 13. Liukin has now won four medals at Beijing 2008, with her other three medals being the gold medal in the All-Around, the silver medal in the Team final and the bronze medal in the Floor Exercise event.

Yang Yilin won the bronze medal with a score of 16.650. Yang has won a Team gold and the All-Around bronze medal at Beijing 2008.

Despite the disadvantage of competing first, as the first competitor tends to score less due to the conservative attitude of the judges, He dished out a nearly flawless performance and scored 16.725.

Liukin was the second to compete and performed a routine with the same level of difficulty as He's routine. However, six Score B judges found more flaws with her performance and she was ranked behind He despite having the same overall score.

Ruban squashes ROK hopes for Individual title

BEIJING, August 15) -- Viktor Ruban of Ukraine prevented Park Kyung-mo of the Republic of Korea from winning ROK's first Men's Individual Olympic title with the very last arrow of their gold medal match at the Olympic Green Archery Field on Friday.

In a tightly-contested gold medal match, the No. 3 seed Ruban defeated the No. 4 seed Park 113-112.

Ruban was lucky to have been in the gold medal match having barely made it through the semifinals. To shoot in the gold medal match, Ruban had to break a 112-112 tie with Bair Badenov of the Russian Federation in a two-arrow shoot off.

Park, the Individual silver medalist, was also lucky to have been in the gold medal match. He almost didn't make it into the top four, having tied Juan Carlos Stevens of Cuba in the quarterfinal match 108-108. On a two-arrow shoot off, Park launched a 10 to break the tie. Park then beat Juan Rene Serrano of Mexico in the semifinals, 115-112.

Ruban will add his Individual gold medal to his Team bronze won at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Park will add his Individual silver medal won in Beijing to his two Team Gold medals from the Athens Games and the Beijing Games.

In the bronze medal match, the No. 31 seed Badenov defeated the No. 1 seed Serrano, 110-105.

Stevens was fifth, Moriya Ryuichi of Japan sixth, Victor Wunderle for the United States seventh and Cheng Chu-sian of Malaysia eighth.

Australia sweeps group A in Women's Basketball

Australia completed their Women's Basketball group A matches with five wins, after defeating Russia 75-55 on August 17.

Russia played fairly well in the first half, leading 37-25. However, the Opals regained their momentum in the second half and blew out their opponents 75-55.

Australian center Lauren Jackson achieved a double-double, netting 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

(BEIJING, August 17) -- Matthew Emmons of the United States, who shot the wrong target in the final of the Men's 50m Rifle Three Positions at Athens 2004 and lost the gold medal, shot a terrible 4.4 on his last shot in the same event today and once again lost a gold that should have been his.

China's Qiu Jian picked up the gold medal with a total score of 1272.5. Jury Sukhorukov of Ukraine won the silver with a tenth of a point less, and the bronze medal went to Rajmond Debevec of Slovenia with 1271.7. Emmons finished fourth.

German Britta Steffen sets Olympic record to win Women's 50m Freestyle

Britta Steffen of Germany won the Women's 50m Freestyle gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games on Sunday.

Steffen clocked in an Olympic record of 24.06 seconds to beat the previous mark of 24.13 set up by Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands on September 22, 2000.

American Dara Torres got the silver in 24.07 and Australian Cate Campbell finished third in 24.17.

Romanian marathoner Tomescu Constantina added a gold to her country's Olympic medal count at the Beijing Games on Sunday morning.

38-year-old Tomescu led the pack from the 25km mark, and finished in 2 hours 26 minutes 44 seconds.

World record holder Paula Radcliffe of Britain lagged far behind.

(BEIJING, August 16) -- Bradley Wiggins of Great Britain became the first cyclist to repeat as Olympic champion in the Men's Individual Pursuit in the Laoshan Velodrome on Saturday.

A big pre-race favorite to defend his Athens 2004 Olympic crown, Wiggins stopped the clock in 4:16.977 to leave Hayden Roulston of New Zealand (4:19.611) with the silver.

Steven Burke, also from Great Britain, won bronze by erasing Russian Alexei Markov's early advantage. Burke claimed bronze in 4:20.947 to Markov's 4:24.149.

Wiggins, who set an Olympic record in qualifying on Friday, August 15, at 4:15.031, overcame a fast start by Roulston to win his fifth career Olympic medal.

Roulston gave him a stout challenge, holding Wiggins at just 0.002sec at 2,500m. Wiggins powered ahead in the final kilometer to win by more than two seconds. Roulston's medal is New Zealand's second-ever medal in Olympic Cycling Track competition in the Men's Individual Pursuit. Gary Anderson won bronze at Barcelona 1992.

American Taylor Phinney, the youngest Cycling Track athlete in Beijing at 18, started fast against Roulston in the first round, but faded later on to finish seventh.

American Michael Phelps won the Men's 100m Butterfly gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games here on Saturday.

Phelps clocked in an Olympic record of 50.58 seconds set up by Serbian Milorad Cavic on August 14, 2008. Cavic settled for the silver in 50.59 and Australian Andrew Lauterstein got the bronze in 51.12.
