Thoughts on the new Starfox Redesigns?

Generally I think they are fine.

Some have pointed out just how much effort went into the clothes they wear. They're all broadly still wearing a "uniform" of sorts, but nobody is actually wearing the same jacket. The zipper on Fox's collar goes all the way up, Falco's wearing more of a vest with a jacket underneath it (and his jacket as the emblem of his old gang, Free As a Bird, on it). Everyone has their straps and belts and things in different places. Lots of little lived-in touches where you can tell somebody spent some time thinking about personality and function.

I have a few problems.

I think Falco looks like a dork. The unkempt feathers are weird and make him look silly. He's supposed to be kind of cool, right? He's kind of a delinquent. He's the "cool guy" of the team. And he used to look like the kind of guy who probably obsessively styled his "hair." There's even that image from Star Fox Assault.

So making his feathers look a little unkempt feels out of character.

I also generally think Slippy looks too wet. If we're being honest I guess Slippy's never looked much like a toad. But now he straight up looks like a Tree Frog and it's weird.

But, overall, I appreciate that they look more like animals again. That they've got this pseudo-realistic "edge" to them. I think that fits more with the character. The further away we get from the Star Fox Command designs, the better.

Why do you think that Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine eschewed the use of Sonic in the game? The game instead retained the original Puyo Puyo characters Carbuncle (called Has Bean in this game), and Arle is even part of the game’s unused assets.

In theory, aren't you playing as Sonic? You don't see Sonic, but all of the dialog is framed as if you are a character trying to stop Robotnik. You could argue that maybe you are playing as yourself, but the game over screen is in reference to the AoStH is giving a speech about capturing Sonic:

My assumption would be marketing. Maybe they wanted the brand recognition of being attached to the Sonic franchise but didn't think Sonic himself would work because it didn't have enough action. Maybe they were trying to diversify -- by giving Robotnik and his cast of robots a game, maybe they thought they could branch out in new directions and capture more markets.

And the fact that I never really questioned it makes me wonder how much it mattered, generally.

I'm gonna be real: I have not paid a lot of attention to the career of Toshihiro Nagoshi. I've struggled to click with Monkey Ball, and outside of being paid to review Judgement, I have been too spooked by their length to touch a Yakuza game. The only game of his I have played and enjoyed is F-Zero GX.

So, like, maybe it's kind of a bummer about Gang of Dragon? I dunno. It seems kind of messed up to be so loyal to Sega for so long and then suddenly quit for a larger paycheck. I mean, granted, Sega doesn't feel like a company that earns or maintains a lot of loyalty, but I dunno.

There are also reports coming out now that Nagoshi was apparently a slave driver at Sega. Oji Hiroi, the creator of Sakura Wars, told a story recently on Twitter about using Sega's dedicated "nap room" often, until Nagoshi started cranking out Yakuza games:

So I dunno. I don't work at that company. I don't know the guy. I don't want to be an armchair fanboy about it.

I do think leaving Sega was probably a miscalculation, but if I remember right he was complaining that Sega pushed him too high up the corporate ladder and he wanted to stay a game developer. Sega apparently wanted him to become the new CEO and he wasn't interested in that.

I am also sure that he probably has a lot of money banked and won't feel especially pinched for a while.

There are basically no hacks where you are playing through the game as a specific character with unique levels, as far as I'm aware. Seems like an untapped market.

The recent announcement from SEGA makes me irrationally angry because I know they’re going to try and sabotage all of the IPs they mentioned just like they’ve been doing with Sonic, Yakuza, Monkey Ball, Shinobi, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi.

Well, so far, the "Sega Universe" initiative appears to be little to nothing. They seem to be claiming that it will take classic Sega franchises beyond just games, so who knows what that will mean.

So far, it's just a bunch of Spotify playlists and the trailer they put out for it shows clothing. Maybe like they do with Sonic, we'll also get the occasional animated short.

My ideal scenario is that this somehow ties into re-releasing their old retro games again. Like they want to tie a series of HD remasters to other promotional material. So we'd get NiGHTS (the game) and NiGHTS (hats and shirts and pins).

Phantasy Star (the game) and like, I dunno, a Myau plush or something. Sort of like what Limited Run does, but instead of selling a $200 collector's edition, they just sell everything separately.

I... might be okay with that? Especially because they're teasing Segagaga.

Also, generally speaking, some of the new revival stuff Sega is doing is kind of okay? Nobody seems very offended by the new Monkey Ball stuff, the Yakuza 3 remake may have been rushed but everyone seems to like what the games they're doing with Ichiban, and I can personally vouch for that new Shinobi game as being pretty rad.

It's got a couple of problems, but I really liked the demo and I watched someone else finish about half the game. It's CERTAINLY a lot better than the 3DS Shinobi game, that's for sure.

Relax, dude! I'm skeptical about JSR and Crazy Taxi for sure, but it's not all doom and gloom.

I think I'm just about ready to stop reading Flipside entirely.

I don't remember anything that's going on anymore or why anyone is doing anything. I thought the comic was still in a "brief distraction" period until I went digging into the archives not that long ago and realized the comic has been spinning its wheels like this for almost ten years now.

Ten years of people occasionally saying "we should do something" and talking about how they feel about each other. But nobody is actually doing anything, they're just talking about it. And talking, and talking, and talking. For ten years. Talking about relationships, talking about politics, talking about how sad they are, or frustrated, or whatever. But not actually doing anything.

Flipside has been setting the table for something like 17 chapters now. That's like one third of the comic's entire run.

We get it, Polly is cold and introverted. Maytag is bright and extroverted, but that's just a mask she wears. Bernadette loves them both. Crest is a nice boy who is slowly achieving his dream of becoming a generic JRPG protagonist. Mistral is... I don't know what Mistral's deal is and apparently Flipside is not interested in exploring it or clarifying it.

But nothing is happening and nothing has happened in a long, long, long time. The sudden and unceremonious appearance of Maytag's mom made it feel like things might start happening again, but now we're right back to the May, Bern and Polly relationship-building small-talk power hour, where they're repeating things the audience already should know.

It's gone from something I check every MWF with the rest of my webcomics to something I only look at sometimes, maybe once a month, and even then, I'm getting close to deleting the bookmark entirely because I don't really know what the story is moving towards anymore. I don't know what it's saying and there's no forward momentum anymore.

Does Sonic Chronicles fit into the main games’ timeline at this point, or has it become officially-released apocrypha by now?

I'm not sure it ever fit in, not really. I'm sure Bioware would have liked that, but with only one game under their belt, it was unlikely.

But like, when Sega of Japan put out their official Sonic Timeline a few months ago, they simply listed the Gizoids as being created by an "unknown civilization." The last third of Sonic Chronicles explicitly spells out where the Gizoids came from.

Let's see... 2009? That would have been one year after I started at TSSZ... huh. I'm genuinely surprised we did not cover it. GiantBomb also migrated to a new CMS recently and this does not preserve the old comments section, which is annoying. I want to see if I left a comment here back in the day.

Generally speaking, I do not remember this article by Jeff. It's possible I forbade myself from reading it. Jeff can be a very bitter man sometimes, and his opinions about a lot of Sega games do not align with my own. I do remember him mentioning on a podcast at one point that he played Sonic Unleashed up to the first Tornado Attack QTE level, which means he basically means he finished the first Sonic level, the first Werehog level, and then quit because he thought it was "a game for babies." That told me enough.

More to your point, what I do have a clear and vibrant memory of around this time was listening to 1up.com podcasts, and top of that pile was "GFW Radio." It was hosted by a bunch of guys who by their own admission did not like podcasts but were being forced by corporate to produce one, so every week they would do a very brief news segment about what was going on in PC Gaming and then spend the rest of the two or so hours just shooting the breeze.

And from there emerged this nickname for the podcast -- "97.5: The Brodeo." Because they were considered shock jock talk radio guys. A lot of 1up podcasts had this dirty edge to them, but GFW Radio in particular would get really dark and nasty, thanks in large part to one of the hosts, Shawn Elliot. He was a great writer, but he had the heart of a SomethingAwful poster. He delighted in rolling around in the internet's worst filth and it came out in a segment often titled "Heroes of the Web." It was an excuse to drag chemically maladjusted teenagers through the mud and laugh at them. It is also, to my arguably fuzzy memories, where "jenkem" was originally invented.

Sonic fans came up quite a bit on The Brodeo.

And from here, tendrils spread out across all of 1up.com's podcasts. I truly believe this is where a lot of the "Sonic fans are sooooo weird!" sentiment gained widespread traction. There were a few posts here or there on SomethingAwful or 4chan, but Shawn Elliot put them on the main stage.

It was a very dark time to be a Sonic fan. We were still coming off of Sonic 06, and now a bunch of pundits were using a strange minority to define the entire fandom. And that definition stuck.

It lead to Kotaku articles, like this clout chaser who bragged about having sex on Sonic the Hedgehog bed sheets. Isn't that weird? Or Patrick Klepek talking about witnessing a "Sonic the Hedgehog Orgy" inside of that Bubsy 3D fangame. Isn't that weird? Or how sexual Sonic CD's special stages are. Isn't that weird?

It has changed, and as much as I hate to admit it, it's because of Aaron Webber. I've learned over the years that a lot of people really did not like Aaron Webber, known sometimes in the community as "RubyEclipse." He was the Sonic brand manager for a long time, until he got promoted to managerial/producer roles and is still kicking around somewhere in the Sega of Japan corporate labyrinth.

I've heard from friends-of-friends who are in the know, but the press apparently couldn't stand him. Aaron was supposedly a pretty stereotypical 4chan troll kind of guy if you got to know him, which checks out given he cracked "attack helicopter" jokes on the official Sonic account during his tenure, back when the "sassy social media brand" was in vogue.

But what he did do was kind of blow off some steam and release the tension. Though he said some nasty things he never apologized for, he did also foster an environment where the Sonic "brand" kind of laughed at itself. It was in on the joke. And it kind of emboldened others to, like, "come forward" I guess, and it all sort of normalized itself.

There's still some sentiment out there that Sonic fans are "weird" but it's a far cry from what it used to be. Because, as I will always and forever maintain, the internet is weird, and you can find these kinds of people in the dark corners of every fandom. No sense limiting yourself to just Sonic fans.

It's Nintendo. Nintendo does things the Nintendo way and has no concept of anything outside of that realm.

I also think, largely, this comes down to what this game was meant to "represent." Hearing things through the grapevine, Mario Wonder was a game created to tie into the first Illumination movie. It was supposed to be a much shorter promotional game and Nintendo delayed it to add more content or something like that. Instead of timing it to the theatrical release, they trailed behind the home video release, before things went completely cold.

The Star Fox Direct opening with showing Fox's cameo in the new movie is pretty telling what this release was supposed to be. It's a lean, fast little project. New cutscenes are easy to insert because they don't require iteration or playtesting like gameplay or new levels do.

They throw some artists at it, they throw some writers at it, they give the music a once-over...

And compared to the kind of effort Nintendo typically puts into a project, they have made a "new" game quickly, easily, and cheaply, while kids are still buzzing about how cool Fox McCloud is.

Synergy.

And it's been 15 years, after all. Those kids buzzing about Fox McCloud right now probably weren't even alive when the 3DS version came out.

Like it kind of sucks for people like me or maybe you who have intricate knowledge of this stuff, but there's a lot of people for whom Star Fox 64 is a distant or even non-existent memory. And the few bits of easy new content are going to shake those memories even more.

I dunno, it's cynical but I also think this is Nintendo making a calculated move that might work out for them, and Nintendo historically doesn't care about people wanting "more."

Nintendo lives in the Nintendo bubble and it seems genuinely hard for most people there to understand what goes on outside the bubble. The bubble is both a genuinely good and also bad thing because sometimes it leads Nintendo thinking of things in ways nobody ever has before and turning the world outside the bubble on its head.

And other times it means they put out Nintendo Land and Reggie basically tells Stephen Totilo, "I think that was good enough and people who want more than that can be exhausting." A statement I would classify as Reggie being right but for the wrong reasons.

That's the bubble at work. Nintendo is critically behind in certain areas but those areas also just don't seem to matter to Nintendo. And historically, considering how Nintendo has often made significantly more money hand over fist compared to their competition, who could tell them those deficiencies actually matter? Not me.

You just kind of have to put up with it. That's what being a Nintendo fan is about.

To some degree, I think people are being way too harsh on it. I think the visuals look great, and adding more story is interesting.

But the moment the announcer lady said "stage layouts have been kept the same" I'll admit I felt really disappointed. A more detailed retelling of this story is a great idea. I won't object to that.

Because it is a significant upgrade. As hard as it may be to believe, Star Fox 64 for the 3DS was 15 years ago. Which, in itself, was 14 years after the original Star Fox 64.

I just want more planets. More routes. More gameplay. Let me walk around The Great Fox. Let me install different guns and bombs on my Arwing. Let me swap out members of my team.

Don't tell me "stage layouts have been kept the same." I even see the crummy mandatory tutorial level from the 3DS game in there:

Peppy tells you the controls as you play! And this stupid tutorial makes you listen to this stupid raccoon tell you everything TWICE before letting you start the actual game. So that means you hear all of this "push Y to use a bomb!" dialog THREE TIMES. Wrong thing to remake, Nintendo!

It just feels like... one step forward, two steps back, you know?

April 2026 Update

Update time!

A little late this time, but I had things going on and I got distracted. Namely, I should have posted this while I was pet sitting for my cousin at the end of April, but it always feels like I’m in another world when I’m doing something like that.

Like I mentioned last month, with the 10 day pet sitting at the end of April, I was actually able to cover rent for myself for the month, but things still aren’t great. It is still crickets on the job front. My Workforce program was supposed to give me an update and hasn’t, so it’s about time I poke them about that. I also signed up for that pet sitting gig job, I’m just waiting for the background check to finish.

On top of that, my roommate wants to move by this time next year, which means I will have to find a place of my own. I’ve got 10 or 11 months to figure something out, so I’m trying to keep the panic to a minimum right now.

I’m finally going in for my dental surgery on the 22nd of this month, and there’s a whole prep of mouth washes, antibiotics, and then afterwards very strong painkillers that will follow that. Like I said last month: it’s super scary! But I’m also a little excited. And I’ll be sedated for the actual surgery part, so I’ll basically just wake up to a lot of missing teeth, and then, a week or two later, getting fitted for a partial.

Upcoming Videos

One key I’ve been told to getting videos out faster is to sort of work on a batch of different videos all at once. I’ve been bad at doing that historically, but I’m getting better at balancing that. A lot of April was spent bouncing around four or so things.

The audio for the Shadow Generations video is nearing completion, as is video capture. I have the completed audio, but it still has all the breaths between lines. As in, the parts where you hear me inhale before I say the next line. Or you hear my weird mouth sounds. As I’ve said before, I gotta trim these out otherwise people complain about it, and I wish there was a shortcut so I didn’t have to. But once I get through this, that video should be easy street to put together.

I’m continuing to flesh out the outline for a future Sonic 2006 video, as well as revisiting the outline for my giant Sonic tier list ranking series. I’m basically at the point where I can start writing episodes for the latter, I just need to get started. The goal has always been something shorter, easier to put together, so I can release them more frequently than my bigger essays.

Speaking of big essays, there’s one very large essay I was trying to whip into shape while pet sitting in the hopes I could squeeze in a voice over session while I was there like I did with the Yooka-Laylee video a few months ago. The problem there is the size of the script: at close to 26 pages, it was the longest script I’ve ever written for a video, and that stressed me out. Long videos take a lot out of me.

So I spent most of my 10 day pet sitting duration slowly trimming down the script. I cut almost four whole pages of text out of the script without losing much content. And I write scripts like people write books, in big solid paragraphs. I probably chopped out something like 20 minutes of rambling. Which is great news! The script is closer to the length of the Sonic Frontiers review, which puts my mind a little more at ease. And I think I could probably trim a little more.

Yeah, no, the first Dragon Ball Z Budokai game was 2002, and Sonic Battle was 2003. Now I've never played Budokai 1 or 2, so maybe they're different. But Budokai 3 was my jam and that's very similar to Sonic Battle, yeah.

There's a huge story mode that runs through all of Dragon Ball Z as each of the major players. As you play, you find capsules that turn into cards that can be equipped on characters. And everybody goes through their canonical fights. So Goku fights everyone, but if you pick Tien, he only fights like four guys.

I do think Dimps probably had a collection of ideas they spread out across more than one game and those ideas coalesced and became Xenoverse, at least.

What do you think about Jun Senoue using loop presets in his early music, ala Sonic 3D Blast?

I've seen some people start to get bent out of shape about it and I think they really need to cool their jets.

This was the video I saw on the subject, but there's also a voiced video essay going around, and its causing some people to get super critical of Jun Senoue's work on Sonic 3D Blast.

Basically, if you can't or don't want to watch the video, there's a specific brand of KORG MIDI piano that contains a variety of different preset loops that ended up being used in a handful of different Sonic 3D Blast songs on the Sega Genesis.

Instead of compose the entire, complete song himself, Jun Senoue took these backing track loops and simply inserted his own melody into them. So the drums, the base, the chorus, it all came from these presets. Jun merely modified somebody else's work.

Now, as the above video points out, that's exactly what these KORG loops are made for. They are for professional musicians playing live music. And when you have a keyboard like this, it makes sense. You don't always have a band with you. You need bass and drums and chorus, so you can just dial in one of these presets and play your own song over it.

You've still written a melody. You're still performing that melody. But everything surrounding that melody is a preset.

And people are getting bent out of shape because this means "Jun Senoue didn't actually make his own music, he stole these songs, he took a cheap shortcut," etc. And it's like, I think those kind of people are really ignorant of how music sometimes gets made. Sampling happens a lot more than some people realize.

There's a great website out there called "WhoSampled" and it tracks this kind of information for all kinds of music, including video game music. So, for example, did you know that Tomoya Ohtani used a lot of loops for Windmill Isle in Sonic Unleashed? Here's the guitar, it's from a loop pack called "Soundscan 16: Bossa Brazil." That's right -- Brazil. For a song meant to represent Greek culture. Some of the drums come from Lalo's Bossa Nova (Samba #2).

You can back out and see how many different songs Ohtani has sampled from in his career, and which songs sample from him in return. This is not me putting Tomoya Ohtani on blast. This is just what happens.

And it's not even just that these are small time guys that are "getting away with it." This kind of sampling happens even in huge name musicians. Listen to Will Smith's Grammy-winning Men in Black, and then listen to Forget Me Nots from Patrice Rushen.

The thing to keep in mind about music is that, technically speaking, there is a mathematically finite number of songs in the world. Note progression is sort of a solved equation. There are only so many keys a note can exist in, and the chorus and backing track has to support that in a specific way in order to harmonize. Harmonization is the thing that makes a lot of music enjoyable to listen to. So there are only so many ways you can combine notes to make a song that sounds good, and courts have already decided how long (or short) a sequence of notes has to be in order to be copyrightable.

All of this is to say that a lot of musicians use "shortcuts" like this, at all levels of skill, and something like these KORG loops were created specifically to be used like this. On purpose. And there are hundreds of loop packs just like those, probably even thousands. It's normal.

If anyone is getting bent out of shape by Jun Senoue using these loops, they're going to be making a lot of enemies with tons of other genuinely legitimate musicians, because it's a common practice.

What do you make of the teaser for the new Resident Evil movie?

One take I think I agree with is that "if this movie was about Leon, Claire or Jill, you know they're going to survive." By making it about a random guy in Raccoon City, it creates tension over whether they're going to live, die, or succumb to some other fate.

The question I guess is whether it still appreciably feels like Resident Evil anyway. Are there certain notable things we need for it to identify as Resident Evil? Certain types of monsters? I'll admit, the teaser does not show us much in the way of lickers, hunters, dogs, tarantulas or anything else the games showed us. If anything, it seems to be wholly new monsters.

Does the lore afford that? Does the T-Virus create such extreme mutations that we see the types of creatures hinted about in the teaser? Sort of. I've never actually dug into the history of this stuff before, but technically, thanks to RE1 Remake, the "Epsilon" strain of the T-Virus is used to explain secondary mutations.

So, like, whatever. I think Resident Evil fans who are upset that this doesn't seem to be a direct remake or a retelling of the games need to chill out.

Unfortunately, that's not the style of the time. We're in an era where this...

It's harder to put a new spin on the source material without fans crying foul about betrayal.

It's a tough balancing act. If it was my scrimblo I'd be picky about this stuff. Heck, I am: I merely think the Sonic the Hedgehog movies are only "okay." It frustrates me that we have to put up with Tom the Cop and blue arms and Sonic being classified as a space alien. That the movies have their own separate scrambled up lore about where the Chaos Emeralds come from and what they do.

That Sonic has a "power" but they never name or elaborate on what that power is, he just goes around saying shit like "he wants my power" or "I'll use my power." WHAT POWER, SONIC? THE POWER TO DO WHAT? RUN FAST? GENERATE ELECTRICITY? It's like referring to Pepsi as "water." IT'S NOT WATER. IT CONTAINS WATER, BUT IT IS NOTABLY DIFFERENT FROM WATER. WE HAVE LAWS ABOUT THIS.

So. I don't know. But I'm willing to give the Resident Evil movie a chance.

It's the same old story. People who don't know how games are made make weird assumptions based on information that doesn't matter.

If there's one area where media literacy is at its worst, its how few people actually understand how games are made, how ideas are implemented, how things are tested, how bugs are dealt with, etc.

I know a growing sect of people who cringe every time somebody goes on a Games Done Quick stream and says something like "the devs were too lazy" or "I guess they decided to make this part bad on purpose" or whatever. It is like a caveman not understanding how fire is made.

Having Starline be this guy who was appalled at how reckless Eggman and cavalier was, only to basically commit the same mistakes in a different way was interesting. It was a fun commentary on, like, meeting your heroes, and how fans might misinterpret intentions.

By that I mean I feel like it's pretty common in fandom spaces to think "well I'd do that better" and then it turns out you don't.

Starline is, or was, just as blind as Eggman, just from a different perspective. And I like that. I like the friction he created in the world because of that. I like that he was trying to beat Eggman at his own game as a twisted way to prove his devotion. He was an enemy both to Sonic and technically to Eggman as well, something he passed on to Surge and Kit.

And, really, there was only one way that could have ended: with Starline facing reality and paying the price for that. But there's rumors he may be coming back soon, so I'm anticipating that.

It's both. There's something called "institutional knowledge." When you work with the same people for long enough, with the same tools, in the same environment, it creates this shared web of information between everyone and everything that allows them to work more efficiently and better with each other.

You start removing people from that web and the institutional knowledge begins to break down. That well-oiled machine isn't so well-oiled anymore. The team composition gets worse. It's more than just losing raw muscle. It's losing the ability to effectively use the muscle you still have.

Now who do you blame for that? You could say a CEO. But did the CEO act alone? Or did they get a recommendation from a hiring manager? Or someone in finance?

It's never so cut and dry. Plus, sometimes, hard decisions have to be made and people have to be cut loose.

And that also includes people just naturally leaving the company, too. They don't even have to be fired. Yes, there are plenty of people still left who are doing their best and they are undoubtedly very talented, but the institutional knowledge has been damaged.

I have no idea what this "343 ruined Metroid Prime 4" thing is though.
