Thoughts on this years SAGE? Seems like there’s less fangames than last year compared to indie titles.

I was unfortunately sort of busy for SAGE this year but I still do want to do a SAGE Roulette stream eventually.

The problem is I'm almost out of HDD space, and as of this writing, I'm waiting to hear back from a sponsor about a sponsor block in my upcoming Shadow Generations video. Once it's clear to post, I can delete the (no lie) 450gb of capture footage and get some breathing room back.

It's a bit of a bummer to hear there's so many indie games at SAGE, but also not really that much of a bummer? I dunno. Sonic's in a weird place right now. I feel like a lot of the Sonic fangaming community is fueled by a kind of spite, where they aren't being served by Sega, so they serve themselves.

I've always said it's hard to follow Sonic Mania. It sounds mean to say it like this, but that's kind of the ultimate fangame. It's the game everyone at SFGHQ was trying to make. And it was the best version of that any of us could ever produce. So where do you go from there? I think it makes sense to see a lull in fangames after that, even now, almost ten years later.

And Sega's not stopping. Sonic Superstars was sort of a letdown, but it was still more Classic Sonic content. Sega is pledging to keep making Classic Sonic games, too. The Sonic fangaming community is fueled by spite, but you have to be REALLY spiteful right now to say "I can do better than Sega." Because they aren't doing bad! I just would also say they aren't doing great.

And then you have the other end of the spectrum, the 3D fangames. Those take more effort from creators, for one thing. But I also feel like Sonic Frontiers sort of covers that too, in that it sort of feels like Sega's take on all these fangames that open up and give Sonic more room to run around. And a lot of people were happy with Sonic Frontiers. I wasn't one of them, but there are a lot of folks in a holding pattern right now, holding their breath and waiting to see what Frontiers 2 is going to be.

So again, natural that fangaming attendance would be down. Might not be a forever thing. I dunno. Ebbs and flows.

I mean, this is hard for me to recommend, because I was just... there... as a lot of this stuff was being found out, so my sources have just been like... IRC chats, forum threads, etc.

Why would that make you a horrible person?

I think a lot of people are burned out on advertising and nobody has any money to spend on anything anymore, even if they cared to watch advertising.

I sometimes think about how watching commercials actually used to be kind of fun? You'd look forward to certain ads. You'd tell other people, "You've got to see this commercial", like in the same way you'd recommend them a book or a movie.

When was the last time that happened? Decades ago? Whenever I see ads now it's for garbage like FanDuel or Kalshi or Better Help. Or lately, especially here on Tumblr, it's for products on Temu where the entire advertisement is 100% AI generated. I always report those ads for being "harmful or malicious."

Being a consumer isn't fun anymore. It's too expensive and too annoying. They're always asking for too much.

If you just want to stay home and chat, I think that's allowed.

I am generally not a ship person at all. I have no desire in my heart to mush two characters together and "make it work" on my own terms.

I do, however, have a funny look when two people take mortal enemies and try to make them romantically entwined. Sometimes that works, I guess. Like there are some very deliberately romantic rivalries.

But I do also think there are a lot of somewhat abusive relationships that come from one person trying to "fix" the other despite the fact they are deeply incompatible and even harmful for each other. I know, it's a fantasy, this is supposed to be a magical world where it can and does work, but I guess it's just not for me.

Sometimes relationships don't work and that's okay. I'd rather accept that and be able to let go than to get obsessed with forcing square pegs through round holes.

But everyone is allowed to follow their own path. It is okay to be a hopeless romantic.

Is it odd that I get the vibe that the Robotnik from the SatAM cartoon felt more like an evil overlord warlock than a mad scientist that other media portrayed him as? Even one of the concept art depicted him as a demon sorcerer. In fact, it felt like only

I dunno, I always got a pretty clear "dictator" vibe from Robotnik. He has a police force do his dirty work. He presides over a city with an enslaved populace under him.

Most wizards and warlocks are loners, aren't they? That's always been my impression. They live in towers or secret caves or in keeps or whatever. They don't conquer cities.

That being said, Robotnik's pet chicken, Cluck, does often feel more like a raven or some other type of familiar. I'll give you that. It's pretty warlocky.

Lets be political. What do you think of AI generated pictures? Is this another fad like NFTs and some cryptocurrencies were? Comparison made because it reminds me of so many scams.

I think AI generated art is bad. No exceptions. Art is not something you can generated. Real artwork is a piece of the artist's soul laid bare.

Generative AI is one thing: it's cheap. "We use it for reference material." Referencing what? The joke was going around about Spider-man: Brand New Day using AI reference material and it's like, what, for New York City? Like nobody's ever taken a picture of New York before. Like nobody knows what New York looks like or has ever looked like.

By its very nature, AI isn't going to show you anything that does not already exist. It's not giving anyone a secret competitive edge or giving them deep knowledge. What it is doing is:

Saving them the time of having to research a topic themselves
Saving them the money of having to license somebody else's images
Alternatively: Saving them the money of having to pay a real artist

It's a sloppy shortcut, and as the tech has gotten more complex, the cost of running it has gone up, so it's not even that cheap anymore. AI is an overpriced, overdesigned search engine.

It's like the Xbox Kinect but for data. The Kinect was supposed to be this big revolution in gaming, it was the end of controllers with buttons. All games in the future were going to be gesture and voice based.

Turns out that while you could make video games using gesture and voice, sometimes a button is better. A button is faster. A button gives clearer feedback. In the time it takes you to say "Turn the console off", you could have pushed the off button five times.

Being able to speak to and interface with a computer in a human-like fashion is a luxury that will never exist. The languages we speak are simply too different. Building an interpreter is more work than its worth. A computer speaks in a language of on or off. That's literally all binary is. 1 or 0. On or off. And through massive strings of ons and offs, we can make the computer print a line of text. But it takes a frankly ridiculous amount of data to make that possible.

But it's never going to be human. It is simply incompatible. Anyone who claims a computer will attain human intelligence is selling you snake oil or too dumb to know what they're talking about. It would take a radical, massive paradigm shift in the way computers process data for sentient intelligence to ever be a possibility in AI. This is not a problem Moore's Law can solve.

As for the artwork itself, the value of artwork is more than simply the fact it exists. People put a lot into their artwork. They draw on a lifetime of thoughts, ideas, and feelings. If you've ever commissioned anyone for artwork, that's why they might charge $200 for a fully rendered piece that might only take them a few hours. It's not a wage. You are paying for years of their life dedicated to this craft. They practiced for 10, 20, 30 years to be able to make that image in a few hours. You are paying for all the blood, sweat and tears that lead them here.

A computer cannot do that. They cannot draw on lived-in experiences. They cannot draw on emotions. They do not imbue their pictures with a sense of purpose. They don't even make intentional decisions on composition. When you tell an AI image generator to make you an image, it starts out with something like this:

Random noise. And then it cross-references this image of random noise with neural networked databanks of shapes and concepts, until it matches enough similarities in the noise that it starts refining in that direction.

(This is just an example I created myself. The real process looks similar to this, but I am simulating it here using artwork I drew for this video)

The generator is not committing to brush strokes. It's not looking for a cool pose. It's not employing color theory. It's not drawing on a life that has been lived. Instead, what it's doing is:

Starting with incoherent noise
Taking your prompt and matching it to tags in its database, which are linked to images that already exist (and were probably stolen without consent)
Extrapolating information and configuring the noise to match the shapes present in the tagged data

This is why generative AI images can sometimes look so messed up. It's not that it "doesn't understand what fingers are", it's that it doesn't understand anything. It's not trying to make something. It's not intelligent. It's just filtering out noise until it reaches a result. And that result can be anything! It is still, on some level, random and unfeeling and stupid.

This is not about "empowering people to become artists." No art is being made here. It's about avoiding paying workers, not having to deal with unions, and being able to pump out "content" as quickly and as cheaply as possible so CEOs can show shareholders that the numbers are still going up and not down.

It's junk. It's theft. It does not make the world a better place. It just fills it full of more noise.

This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with money.

I mean. Licensed games have always been big sellers. When I did my Jurassic Park video, reading that book on the history of Ocean Software, their entire business model was gobbling up movie and TV licenses. It was a very lucrative business.

And don't forget that the gaming landscape has changed. A lot of Ocean's games weren't very good, same as a lot of other licensed games, and over time those kinds of quick and dirty licensed games went away.

Because you gotta remember, a company like Ocean turned Jurassic Park around in about six months. A lot of their games were bad because they bought a license in March or April and had a game on store shelves by Christmas. Those kinds of games can't exist anymore. You need to be fast, cheap, and agile in that kind of market.

...Or they can still exist, but they've shifted to markets that still support them: mobile phone games, or even Roblox and Fortnite "creative experiences." Smaller ponds where money can be stretched further, because expectations are lower.

Like did you know that Adult Swim produced a whole Rick & Morty Pokemon clone called "Pocket Mortys"? It was only on phones.

Hundreds of games like that have come and gone and there's an entire subset of the gaming population that probably never even knew they existed at all. They don't get promoted in the same spaces as a Call of Duty or a Grand Theft Auto.

And why even bother developing a game when you can just license your IP out to something that already exists?

I can't reasonably say the video game industry is nearing its twilight any more than the film industry is. Entertainment will always be in demand. I do think video games have sort of painted themselves into a corner where they can't keep selling people on better tech forever. But it's really up to the market and to some degree even the law to decide how that swings.

We have guys like Ross Scott fighting for better ownership, and I feel like that's part of a larger issue of digital rights overall. Those things have been approaching a breaking point for a long time. Copyright, ownership, redistribution, a lot of it needs to be reexamined and unfortunately we're under the most capitalist president ever right now. He'll never take control away from those who abuse it the most. Maybe that would change if we get a hard swing away from his ideals, but I have a feeling we're going to have to drag that ancient greaseball out of the white house kicking and screaming by the diaper.

But there's too many unknown factors to truly say gaming is dying.

I could see the Switch and Steamdeck pushing things more towards everything being portable, which just homogenizes everything more around the standards of phone games, really. It'll all blend together.

How do you feel about CrossWorlds at this point?

I wish there was a singleplayer campaign. Or something else to do by yourself. Once you beat all cups at every difficulty and poke at Race Park a little bit there's not much else to do except go online, and I really do not like the online in Crossworlds.

When racing against other humans, it tends to be extremely punishing in the worst ways, and you're kind of at the mercy of chaos. Winning a race online feels like total luck. I've gone from first place all the way down to last place in the last turn of the final lap. It's a very offensive-focused game with very few defensive options.

Offline, the CPU AI isn't so aggressive or opportunistic, so it ends up working out, but there's not enough meat on those bones for me to keep coming back to it long term.

Thoughts on that godawful Level5 showcase thing?

Don't look at me, I don't do Level5 stuff. A friend has been telling me for years that I should try Yokai Watch because it's "way better than Pokemon" and fixes a lot of the complaints I've had with Nintendo's games. But I never have. And cannot remember playing any other Level5 games.

Metroid Ravenous is the star of the show to me. Like, finally, somebody gets it. Samus looks incredibly strong, very determined, and her survival is on the line in a way that feels urgent. She's losing herself to her desire to survive. Where will that take her? To strange new places, obviously. She's becoming an alien in a world of aliens.

Switch 2 is probably the only console that could get a port of Meccha Chameleon. Can you imagine trying to paint with a gamepad? Nightmarish. But at least Switch 2 has mouse mode, which I assume is supported. It seems like it is. It'd be smart if you could pull it out of the dock and draw using the touch screen, too, but drawing on the Switch 1 felt kind of bad, so I dunno. Still, I don't think it'd be easy to put that on a Playstation or an Xbox.

A lot of trailers had me wondering if I was just not "getting" the Nintendo audience nowadays. Like, I see the trailer for Stage Fright, and it does absolutely nothing for me. But then I saw the trailer for Ondeh Ondeh and it really hooked me. That game looks cool as hell.

Star Fox and Mario Kart World DLC, who cares. Star Fox's battle mode never seemed super important to me. I know there are some people who really loved it but I also wonder how much of that was down to it being the only multiplayer game they had besides maybe Goldeneye.

Mario Kart World DLC is especially funny to me because I have a friend who absolutely hates how much Nintendo dropped the ball on that game, and the DLC kind of jokerfied him a little bit. Because it's barely even DLC. The "new" SNES tracks have apparently always been in the game, it's just now they toggled the flag to make them actual race courses. Feels very much like the bare minimum. Even Mario Kart 8 DX got a more significant update recently.

I wonder if Mega Man: Dual Override struck an exclusivity deal for this Direct at the last second, because Capcom put out that weird trailer a few months ago selling how Protoman is joining the game and he wasn't part of the footage at all. You only saw him in key art at the very end of the trailer. It wasn't until this Direct that they finally showed and talked about him. Very strange.

Kirby looks fine. I feel like I need to see a little more of Kirby before I have any thoughts about it. It feels like they stopped short of showing what was interesting about that game.

The rest? Meh.

Thoughts on the new Zelda Ocarina of Time Remake?

Dungeons aren't different enough, character designs are too different.

I'll echo a lot of what people are saying in that I think Link is too detailed now. But what gets me is like... not that there's too much detail, but that these outfits don't look practical or comfortable.

More than anything, Link's clothes look expensive. All of that embossed leather isn't cheap, especially in an economy before the industrial revolution. Those clothes are the work of a master craftsman, something you'd see on royalty. They're more for sitting around in a throne room than what you'd wear on an adventure.

I also think that while I like the concept of a tunic woven out of grasses and leaves, all I can think is how that's going to be like wearing a wicker basket. There's a reason we stopped wearing foliage for clothing back in the stone age. A lot of reasons, really. Even if you tell me these are magical plant fibers, they still look thick and coarse. Link is just going to be itchy and sore (on top of having constricted movement).

But I'll admit: watching the gameplay demonstration, there's a part of me that's curious to see the game. I want to know what they did to all of the environments. And the monsters. Some of the new monster designs, like the new Deku Baba, do actually look kind of cool.

But I dunno. I think about how I bought Ocarina of Time 3DS in the run up to Breath of the Wild, and how I don't think Ocarina has aged super well. It felt very slow and tedious. I was really bored towards the end of the game. I think I need more than dedicated jump and sprint buttons, you know?

I always try to take at least one step back and identify the fact that a system worked because at one point it was good. Now, that can be a slippery slope into centrism, and centrism is how nothing gets done or changed for the better.

But, like, police, right. Are cops too powerful nowadays? Yes. Is police brutality a serious problem? Yes. Do we waste millions, even billions of dollars on gear that police will realistically never use unless a global power invades the United States? Yes.

Were police useful at one point in United States history? Also yes. The police do a job that is necessary in society. But they have absolutely gotten out of control. We need police, but we do not need this police, and weeding out the police we need versus the police we don't need is an incredibly difficult process. I can't tell you where to even begin on that one, but I do know that innocent people have died, and their killers got off because they were cops. Defund the police? Ehhhh, maybe, but reform is probably better. But it has to be sweeping, aggressive reform. No stone unturned, you know what I mean?

The same goes for capitalism. Capitalism was sort of the entire foundation that built America, in a sense. We enjoy the luxuries we have today thanks in part to capitalism.

But... unchecked capitalism has become a huge problem. It may in fact be the number one issue facing American society today. The complete and total pursuit of eternally higher profits, quarter over quarter, year over year, decade over decade. People who are inexplicably not satisfied with just merely a billion dollars, or 10 billion dollars, or 50 billion dollars.

They could be the number one most profitable business in all of America and they'd still be trying to find a way to optimize another 10%, you know? Whose benefits they could cut, which jobs could safely be eliminated, what products they could make just $0.02 cheaper per unit. For them, it will never end. And it's killing us.

I often wonder what these executives are spending their money on. Because they certainly aren't spending it on a better life for guys like you or me. If they spend it anywhere, it's only in places that will earn them more money back than they spend. So their 50 billion dollars can become 100 billion dollars. They are living for their own benefit and nobody else, as their workers suffer more, and more, and more.

What really puts it in to stark contrast for me are a pair of Itch.io games called "You are Jeff Bezos" and "You are Elon Musk", where you randomly inhabit their bodies and must spend as much of their money as you can before you get caught. Turns out to be surprisingly difficult to spend billions of dollars, because even after you solve something like homelessness these guys still have impossible amounts of wealth. They basically have infinite money, for most intents and purposes. Past a certain point, they earn more just in interest than any person being can reasonably spend.

It begs the question as to why they need to hoard that much wealth and why they get to decide to hold the rest of us back just to gate keep their own status. Sure, it's America, they should have that freedom, but at what point do you recognize they are harming the freedom of others by having that much money? It's more money than every bank in the entire world combined physically holds.

Sometimes it feels like the world is populated by a couple dozen Ebeneezer Scrooges and we need a whole army of ghosts to scare these people into being better humans.

What is the Sonic Eats Rings group all about and how did it come to be

The Sonic Eats Rings group is the fallout of what used to be The Moogle Cavern. The admin of The Moogle Cavern didn't want to do it anymore and closed up shop, so everybody reconvened under Sonic Eats Rings.

Then, a little over a year ago, some old drama bubbled back up in the Sonic Eats Rings Discord and the community split into a group that was still willing to tolerate a certain problematic user, and a group that was no longer willing to tolerate that user after like, 20 years of rude and abrasive behavior.

But we're all just very old friends. We've known each other most of our lives at this point. For better and worse.

This would have been the story leading up to reintroducing Dr. Robotnik (soon to renamed to Dr. Eggman). You see, Robotnik had created a device… I think it was called the Ultimate Annihilator, but my memory is telling me it was a name longer and more complicated than that and I can’t remember. But I think it was the Ultimate Annihilator.

Note: a lot of images follow.

Point was, Robotnik wanted to use this device to destroy Knothole, where Sonic, Sally, and the rest of the Freedom Fighters lived. He discovered their location and was going to vaporize them into dust.

Thus followed “Endgame”, the messy Ken Penders story where he intended to kill Princess Sally (he thought she was cramping Sonic’s style) and Sega told him no (SegaWorld in Australia was merchandising Princess Sally and they had a vested financial interest in her survival).

Endgame to me was the turning point for the comic. Ken having to course-correct mid-story made enough parts not make sense that they had to publish an “Endgame: Director’s Cut” that plugged up holes and explained discrepancies.

But part of that turning point was the real actual permanent death of Dr. Robotnik. Bunnie and Antoine sabotaged the Annihilator, and instead of vaporizing Knothole, it vaporized the control room for the weapon. Both Sonic and Robotnik were caught in the blast; Sonic survived thanks to power ring energy.

But Robotnik was dead. Completely dead. Never coming back dead. And it left the comic rudderless for a long time as a totally new rogues gallery was introduced and none of them were as strong as Robotnik.

I was just talking about this in my discord recently, but Ken Penders was responsible for another major turning point in the book. When the Sonic comic launched, it was a joke book. It used the characters from the Saturday Morning Cartoon (SatAM), but in stories that more often fit the tone of the weekday cartoon (AoStH). When Ken got hired, he started dragging the book more towards the serious stories of the Saturday Morning Cartoon and away from the comedic storylines, and this started with Issue #19, “Night of 1000 Sonics.”

This story is still written to be kind of funny, but it’s much more science fiction than silly. The Freedom Fighters discover a gateway to the “Cosmic Interstate”, a road that allows them to travel the multiverse. Out of the Cosmic Interstate gateway stumbles an alternate universe version of Sonic wearing a leather jacket whose face has been half roboticized. He tells the Freedom Fighters of an incoming threat, an evil so dangerous it seeks to conquer the multiverse.

That threat is Robo-Robotnik, an alternate universe version of Robotnik that fully roboticized his own body. In the process, he effectively made himself invincible, able to freely modify and upgrade his own body at will.

Sonic is then forced to team up with both his (fleshy) version of Robotnik as well as more than 1000 multiverse versions of himself in order to disassemble Robo-Robotnik.

So we fast forward 50-something issues as we lead up to issue 75. Robotnik’s been dead close to four years now since Endgame. But somebody has been spying on the Freedom Fighters for a while, and Princess Sally has finally identified a new satellite network has gone online, basically monitoring them 24/7.

But why? And who’s behind it? The Freedom Fighters reluctantly enter space by repairing a decommissioned shuttle, and who they find at the satellite’s central control is none other than Robotnik.

They discover a whole factory in space. Robotnik has been abducting robots off the planet, transporting them into space, and converting them into a workforce as he rebuilds his empire.

Sonic is furious. This guy’s supposed to be dead. They won. They freed the planet. He tears into Robotnik.

In their fight, Robotnik’s cape gets caught in one of the factory’s conveyor belts and he gets dragged through a corrosive chemical that melts all of his flesh off.

It reveals Robo-Robotnik, the “ultimate evil” from all the way back in issue #19. He had figured out a way to rebuild his body after being dismantled, and transferred a copy of his digital consciousness into it. With this reality’s Robotnik truly actually permanently dead, Robo-Robotnik decided to move in and flex his considerable might.

The Freedom Fighters set some explosives and barely escape the satellite control station before it blows. Robo-Robotnik, like Robotnik before him, is now dead.
