Feline Polycystic Kidney Disease - Rare but Very Serious

Recently, Poppy was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a rare genetic condition in both dogs and cats, male and female. With cats, it's most prevalent in Persian cats and cats whose breed derives from Persian cats - like Himalayan, Scottish Fold, British Shorthair, Chartreux, Exotic Shorthair, Burmilla, and Siberian Neva Masquerade. It's not usually found in mixed breed cats, but it can occur.

PKD is a genetic abnormality and at this time cannot be prevented. It is passed on from mother cat to kittens. All it takes is one parent cat with PKD for kittens to inherit the condition. It's also been noted that some cats who have developed PKD don't have the gene mutation that causes it, which means there could be other genetic abnormalities behind it. There is a simple test veterinarians use now to detect PKD that involves a simple cheek swab.

PKD affects the way a cat's renal system functions by causing cysts to develop on the kidneys that disrupt their ability to work as they should. The cysts can vary in size and are usually filled with air, fluid or what's called semi-solid material. With this condition over time, multiple cysts will develop and cover more and more of the kidney surface making it harder and harder for them to do their work.

The hard thing about PKD is that cats may not show any symptoms. In its early stages, the cysts may be very small and not painful for a cat, so they won't always let you know that something is wrong. Later on, when PKD cats begin to experience kidney failure, they may stop eating, begin vomiting more, drink more water and urinate more than normal. Cats in this stage of PKD may also show weight loss.

PKD isn't life-threatening right away, but once it's diagnosed through urine and blood tests and perhaps an ultrasound along with a physical exam, it needs to be addressed to help prevent cysts from growing and to prevent additional bacterial infections which can be fatal. There is no specific treatment for this condition right now but cats with PDK can benefit from special diets and medications to reduce nausea and vomiting. They need to be closely and regularly monitored for additional kidney infections, increased pain and kidney failure.

For Poppy, we are monitoring her closely and offering her whatever she needs to stay comfortable. Happily, at this point she is very much herself.

If you want a happy cat but would rather NOT spend the big bucks, there are some great hacks out there just for cat owners, designed to keep your cat and your wallet happy! Covering Health and Safety Bases for Your Cat

The month of April is dedicated to several things related to pet health and care - Pet First Aid Awareness, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and National Pet Health Insurance Day (April 7), to name a few. Bringing all these things to everyone's attention makes it a great time to do a self-check-in with your own pets to so you're ready when something unplanned happens.

For instance, do you know what kind of things should go in a pet first-aid kit? Yes, you'll need things to treat any wounds and a leash to keep an injured pet in place. Did you think about your pet's health records and any medication they take? There are lots of unexpected things that a complete first-aid kit should include.  Click here to see a full list.

If you have a pet, have you thought about pet health insurance? A pet's sudden serious illness can bring with it very costly tests and treatments that can really challenge a budget. We all want to do whatever we can to help our pets in a crisis and having pet insurance can help with the cost. It's an individual decision and should be considered based on a pet's age, overall condition and after looking at the many insurance options available.  Nerdwallet.com has a great overview of pet insurance and the options pet owners have.

BCR’s Flying Angel is a Movie Star!

BCR has a wonderful friend in our “flying angel,” Davica! This amazing woman has helped get 17 cats to BCR and their forever home! Meet our wonderful angel!

Davica was born on the island paradise of Trinidad. She and her family moved to Baltimore, MD, when she was nine. At that time she met her very first cat, an orange cat named Rusty, and a dog named Rover, who became her loving companions and really set her on the path of being an animal lover and advocate.

After school in Baltimore, Davica went on to earn a degree in performing arts at Adelphi University in New York City! This is how she became a movie star! If you watch the movie Strictly Business, you’ll see her in a nightclub scene with Tommy Davidson!

Davica’s budding screen career was interrupted by a chance to see the world. She spent some time in Paris working for an airline – with her lovely pet dog and cat - and after a while all three made their way back to the US. She joined a major airline company about 30 years ago and has been to every continent except Antarctica! Along the way, Davica has helped many, many animals, among them the 17 BCR cats!

The first BCR cat to fly home with Davica was handsome Nigel in 2016. He was part of a Miami trailer park community of cats that was rescued and, as a wonderful person was trying to find them homes, he tested positive for feline leukemia. His rescuer put a post up on Facebook desperately looking for a place for him. Another BCR volunteer in Raleigh saw the post and called Alana, who was happy to take Nigel! We just needed to get him to BCR!

Enter, Davica! A mutual friend of Alana’s and Davica’s, Thorn, contacted Davica about flying him to Raleigh. As a longtime animal rescuer at this point, she needed to be sure BCR was a good and trustworthy rescue for Nigel. Thorn told her that BCR is “heaven on earth” and “one of the best rescues there is.” Davica also watched some BCR videos online and our live 24-hour cameras and saw for herself that Nigel would be fine here. So he flew to NC and Thorn drove him to BCR from Raleigh.

Since then, Davica has flown many kitties to BCR, including, Houdini, Meghan, Mariah, one of our two Crystals, Gabriel, Boomer, MaryAnn, Marlo, Odie, Andrew, Lovey, Pip, Merlin, and Gio! All these kitties owe their time at BCR to Davica!

As it turns out, Davica and Alana already knew each other before Nigel’s trip. They had been Facebook friends and Alana offered some advice when Davica was trying to find homes for four blind kittens she had promised to take for a friend who passed away and who were headed for a shelter and certain euthanasia. Davica had vetted a couple of rescues for these kittens but they didn’t measure up so she ended up keeping them after getting their eyes treated, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. These four kitties became companions for her other blind cat. Since then, she and Alana have become good friends.

What exactly does it take to get a kitty flown to BCR? Time and planning. Because she only flies on flights with space available and takes a day off for each rescue trip, it takes Davica about four days to get things lined up and to arrange for the rescuer to bring the kitty to her. On top of that, her husband, Aniss, also takes that day off so he can care for their rescue pets.

As an airline employee, she can fly as a passenger for free and, with her privileges, kitties with her fly free, too. Her rules are that any cat she’s traveling with must stop food at 8 a.m. and use the litter box at least once before she takes it over. A sample trip could be like her recent trip with Mariah, where she first flew from Miami to Orlando where she met the rescuer, and then on to Raleigh. Davica flies with her own special pet carrier complete with everything to make a kitty comfortable. She reports that Mariah was a very popular traveler, singing all the way, and gaining lots of fans who wanted to kiss her goodbye when the flight ended. Once in Raleigh, Davica met up with a BCR volunteer who took Mariah on the last leg of the journey to BCR.

To make sure any kitty she travels with is secure at all times, she has a special request of TSA. As she goes through the X-ray machine, they hold the cat carrier. She requests a private room for them to check the carrier itself. Once there, she takes out the kitty and the security people X-ray the bag and run their necessary tests. Once that is done, she puts the kitty back in the bag! She’s even been known to meet up with rescuers in airport places only she knows about – like private bathrooms where the swap from one carrier to another can be made easily, quietly and safely.

Davica and Aniss have had many pets over the years, all rescues, including dogs, cats and even a possum rescued during a hurricane. Right now they have two dogs, Max and Sasha, and several cats: Bobo (leukemia-positive), Shadow (one-eyed “pirate”), China (blind, deaf and with cerebellar hypoplasia), Axel (partially blind, slight neurological problems and seizures) and two formerly feral cats who enjoy bunk beds at Davica’s. Certainly the most unusual pet she has is an African Sulcata Tortoise named Mr. Sandman, who she rescued from the middle of a busy street. Because he might live to be 150, Davica has included him in her will!

Davica is an established foster mom, a rescuer, and trap-neuter-release volunteer where she lives. As such, people call her frequently for help and she’s a regular doing adoption fairs at her local PetSmart. When she flies with kitties these days, they are usually bound for BCR! We are so grateful to her for all she’s done for our cats!

Davica has not yet visited BCR, which she says is “my favorite rescue in the whole wide world!” We’re counting on her to come soon, so she can see all the happiness she’s given to our cats! Thank you, Davica!

The Ohio Kitties - How are They Doing Now?

Back in late July, 12 very frightened and confused cats pulled to BCR in a large van. They had just left Ohio, where they had been housed together in a poorly ventilated small house. What lay ahead, none of them knew.

That was the situation when the Ohio 12 first entered BCR after being picked up and driven back by Sam and Alyson in record time. Why the speed? When BCR got word that these cats were to be euthanized after enduring so much already, she and Alyson had to do something. So they quickly made arrangements to get these cats to the safety of BCR.

When they first arrived (and you can see that video here), the cats, despite being well fed and up to date on shots, were unkempt, had dirty ears, untrimmed nails and, more disturbing, all were anemic and had either upper respiratory infections and/ or UTI’S. We also had to treat them all for a serious gastric infection. All needed their teeth cleaned and several needed major dental work. Terra and Aza had such severe dental problems that it impacted their ability to eat an stay health; Terra hadn't been spayed.

It wasn't just their health that was a problem. The biggest challenge would be gaining their trust quickly. This had to be overcome right away because the cats badly needed baths, shaves, and medication right away. A couple of the cats, like Abbey Road, arrived already friendly but most were wary and scared of these new strangers. We didn't want those necessary actions to traumatize them more.

That was then, how are they doing now?

The change started immediately when the crates first opened at BCR - they began to relax in real-time and feel comfortable enough to start playing in the catnip beds and check everything out. Best of all, most allowed six strangers to pet them like they'd known us for years. What a relief!

Today, the kitties are doing very well! Their respiratory issues have been taken care of and they receive regular grooming and brushing, which is critical for longer-haired cats like Sultan and Porcini! Aza, Terra and Sultan had the longest journey back to good health. Terra continues to improve and we hope to have her eye removed soon. Aza has made the greatest overall journey, though, from being traumatized and hiding to accepting love and feeling secure enough to purr and make biscuits when she gets attention.

What have we learned in the nearly six months they've been at BCR? Here are some things you can look for if you watch them on our live 24-hour cameras!

Abbey Road - She is a polydactyl who loves to greet people at her door and loves everybody she meets.

Aza - She has come such a long way. She has the smoothest purrbox that is very healing and she loves to make biscuits.

Bennington - He is one of our two-wheel runners and a very talkative boy

Corduroy - He keeps everyone on their toes - literally - everything is a toy to him, especially mops! He keeps everyone in his room active!

Kachina - She is still our shyest cat but the way to her heart is grooming her. She has to maintain her diva status!

Nantucket - He loves to use the cat wheel as a hammock and loves looking outside.

Rexie - She is the boss lady of room 1 and she loves to play.

Mr. P - He loves the outdoors but he also enjoys looking out his inside window. He has relaxed so much compared to when he arrived and he has much more confidence.

Porcini - She loves to have her belly rubbed and, although she is very majestic looking, she is a giant goofball.

Schnapps - He is a very chill guy that is kind of the glue in his room since he's the one cat who gets along with everyone.

Sultan - We thought we were going to need to invest a lot of time getting him acquainted with the rest of the cats since we heard that he was in a cage by himself because of his alpha-male mentality. Happily, all that is wrong and he is friends with the boys and can be often be found snuggling with other cats.

Terra - This sweet tiny girl is really a fighter. She wasn't too fond of the other cats when she arrived but now she is doing really well with the Room 3 kitties. More than anything she loves to find a lap to sit in!

You may wonder what rescuing these kitties from Ohio has to do with BCR's mission. Everything.

They are all either blind, FIV- or leukemia-positive (or combinations of those things). They were supposedly in a place where they were getting a second chance at life, but through no fault of their own, they were suddenly facing euthanasia. Our mission is to offer these cats and others like them compassion, dedication and love in a forever home. Their story represents exactly what BCR is all about and who we are as a community of people who love animals and are dedicated to caring for those that won't have the chance to be adopted or need of special care.

The Ohio kitties have already met more than a hundred people since their arrival and each one of their stories teaches a visitor something new, whether it's that the scared cat in the shelter just needs extra time and a different environment to open up, or how important spaying and neutering animals is to preventing the spread of FIV and leukemia, and how damaging untreated eye infections are to cats! What Exactly is BCR Magic?

If you've watched our 24-hour live cameras, you've seen BCR magic in action! Our amazing staff members work every day with our kitties, showing them extreme care and love and meeting all their needs. They spend time grooming them and delivering medication, all in a way that lets them know how each cat deals with that attention and if a cat's health is changed. Everything is very hands-on and done with love.

But BCR magic is much more than that! It also includes Fear Free Animal Training from Fear Free Pets. All BCR staff members who work with the cats must complete and pass this course to be certified in this training. What they learn in the course is put to work every day at BCR. A good example of how Fear Free Training works involves one of our Ohio kitties, Aza. She arrived at BCR deeply traumatized by losing her best friend in a most horrific way and then living in a rescue that could not offer her the best care. She was terrified of people and hid all the time. Very slowly, and using the Fear Free concepts, our staff was able to work with her to a point where she now welcomes being petted and loved and enjoys treats and fresh air on her catio.

We have you to thank for helping us find more and better ways to care for the BCR cats. Your generosity made it possible for all our staff members involved in the cats' direct care to take this series of classes and to be certified in this training! Your kindness is at work at BCR every day!

This specialized training in animal care was founded in 2016 by Dr. Marty Becker, a veterinarian who has appeared on many TV shows to advocate for animals, and is a board member of the American Humane Society of the US. He is also an author and a professor of veterinary medicine. His goal with this course was to reduce the fear and anxiety often experienced by pets (and by extension, animals in shelters) by training pet owners and animal caretakers to be aware of the signs of both in animals and to offer ways to overcome them.

Fear Free offers both pet owners and animal professionals a series of online courses that cover a variety of topics around stress and anxiety relief. Each session's lessons are created by a big team of veterinary and pet experts, veterinarians, pain experts, animal behaviorists, veterinary technicians, animal trainers, groomers and more. This course if very important these days as so much incorrect and potentially harmful information about pets and animal care can be found in the internet every day.

Solensia - A New Treatment for Cats with Arthritis!

It's a fact that cats can get arthritis as they age just like we do. As with our joints, the cartilage between their bones begins to break down as they age, causing bones to rub together and making joints painful. Quite a few of BCR's more senior cats are feeling the pain from arthritis, like Jellybean, Charity, Licorice, Misty, Pixie and Mr. Betty.

Humans have lots of remedies available to help us with pain and stiffness and now cats are getting more options, too. Joining cold laser therapy, acupuncture, supplements and traditional pain medications, cats can now add Solensia to their treatment options. Approved by the FDA in 2022 specifically for the treatment of osteoarthritis in cats (the first-ever so far), the active ingredient in this once-a-month injection is frunevetmab, which is a lab made protein that blocks certain pain signals to a cat's brain when cartilage breaks down allowing bones to rub together, offering relief from arthritis pain. The cats mentioned above and several others at BCR are benefiting from Solensia treatments already.

This is a new drug and may not be appropriate for every cat, so if you have a cat suffering from arthritis, you must consult with your vet. He or she will determine if it's right for your cat, the size of the dose, which is based on a cat's weight, and will administer Solensia in a subcutaneous injection, which should continue every four weeks on a schedule to maximize their effectiveness. The injections cannot be done safely at home.

You and your vet will also watch for any side effects, which can include vomiting, diarrhea, injection site pain, and itchy or scabby skin.

Combined Campaigns Help the BCR Cats!

Fall isn’t just when the leaves change or when BCR holds its annual raffle. It’s also the start of the Workforce Giving Campaign season. Exactly what is that? It’s a time when employee payroll-deduction giving programs get launched, giving those employed by the federal government, the military and North Carolina state government an easy way to help out the non-profits they love.

BCR regularly participates in both the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and the North Carolina State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC). If you work for the federal government or military or are retired from either one, you would participate in the CFC. Any employee or retiree of the state of North Carolina, and this includes those working for any of the state universities in the UNC System, have access to the SECC.

How important are these campaigns to BCR? In 2023, your contributions to the CFC and SECC raised more than $15,000 for the cats! Your generosity contributes directly to BCR’s mission: to give our cats a safe, loving and healthy forever home. Your donations provide the day-to-day medical and dental care the BCR cats need, cover any specialized treatments that may be necessary and so much more.

How does it work? For both campaigns, you just select BCR from the campaign website (both links and our numbers are listed below) or from a printed booklet provided by the campaigns. You can set up your deductions online or complete a printed form that comes with the booklet. You decide how much you’d like to give to BCR for the year through payroll deduction. That tax-deductible amount will be deducted from your paychecks and sent to BCR. How much you feel comfortable giving is up to you. Even $2 or $5 given to BCR from each pay period helps enormously over a year! If you haven’t heard about the campaigns yet this year, check with your Human Resources office. You’ll also find frequently asked questions on each campaign’s website.

These campaigns are as important to the cats as the donations we get from your online votes, purchases and the Daily Clicks! The cats appreciate everyone who has donated to them through these yearly campaigns. If you aren’t a federal or state employee but have friends or family members who are, please let them know about BCR and how they can help, too!

The 2023 CFC campaign ends on January 15, 2025. The SECC ends on December 31, 2024.
