One Year Wedding Anniversary

On our one year wedding anniversary (which was actually on November 18th), I wanted to share some of our favorite photos from the big weekend. The affair took place in Atlanta, GA with 200 friends and family.

Our guests checked into the Loews Atlanta Hotel and were treated to a packed “Hotlanta” welcome bag stuffed with goodies from FIJI Water, Cookie Pop, Poo-pourri, Popchips, Urban Decay, BAI, St Ives and Kinder Joy.

On Friday night, we kicked off the affair with an intimate welcome dinner for family at 10th & Piedmont, followed by drinks and a drag show at Blake’s on the Park. Custom cupcakes with our logo were generously sponsored by Georgetown Cupcake.

Saturday started with a modified Rumble Boxing class in Piedmont Park led by founder Noah Neiman.

Then it was time for the Ketubah signing, ceremony, reception, and after party, which all took place at King Plow Arts Center and was planned impeccably by Amy Osaba Design. Our ceremony was officiated by Rabbi Malka Packer-Monroe with live music from an LGBTQ choir led by Dannis Winston of DWP Live Factory. It was a tear-jerker!

We both wore custom suits by Michael Andrews Bespoke. I paired my lavender suit with metallic silver boots from Jeffrey West and Jason paired his aubergine suit with black cowboy boots from Frye.

The reception began with our first dance, instructed by the dance pros at Dance with Me Midtown and the party was kicked into full-swing with music by DJ Cassidy. An after party followed into the morning with a DJ and out-of-this-world pizza from Mellow Mushroom.

Married and engaged couples talk about meeting their significant other on dating apps.

BRIDES.com asked me and my then-fiancè now-husband Jason to be a part of their latest #RelationshipGoals series about how we met on Tinder. This is our second video with BRIDES and we just love working with them! Plus, it was super cool to visit 1 World Trade. I got my face beat-to-the-Gods in front of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking NYC.

Connecting on a dating site isn't that difficult. With an open mind and a dexterous thumb, just one or two committed scrolling sessions can yield an abundance of matches. But ~making a connection~ on a dating site is an entirely different matter. After the swipe, what's the next move? What do you comment on in the first message? How do you even decide to send the first message? Is there ever any guarantee you aren't being catfished from the start? How do people successfully bring their digital romances into the 3D world? Now obviously, we here at Brideslove a good love story, so for the first episode of our three-part "#RelationshipGoals" video series, we invited six real-life couples who met online to tell us how it's done. In episode one: "Love at First Swipe," the duos discuss immediate turn-ons, slow starts, opening lines, memorable details, and even an embarrassing secret or two...

"I just remember you talking about your cats and I was like, 'Oh! There's a guy that likes cats!'" Sheena, who met her fiancé Peter on OKCupid, tells us—a revelation which was immediately met with an exasperated sigh from Peter himself. "You can't be telling them about the cats!" he says, "What the heck!?"

While Peter may not be ready to display his "cat daddy" pride on a sweatshirt anytime soon, it's reassuring to see that, even solely gauging by his and the other participants' appearances in this video alone, the unwarranted shamefulness surrounding online dating is slowly eroding away. The latest poll from Pew Research Center suggests "online dating has lost much of its stigma, and a majority of Americans now say online dating is a good way to meet people."

Micah, with then-fiancé, now-husband Jason's arm draped around his shoulders, tells us, "When we tell people we met on Tinder, the majority of the responses we get are like, 'Wow, that's awesome,' or 'Wow, I love the fact that it's not stigmatized anymore…Like, you don't feel weird telling me that,'” and, I'm like, 'I don't.'"

In fact, significant others who met IRL can sometimes feel like the odd men and women out these days.

"It's weird to meet somebody in real life," says Lauren, who met her husband Matt on Bumble. "Like, if someone meets someone at a bar, I'm like, 'I don't understand.'"

When the folks over at The Trevor Project asked me to host the TrevorLIVE 2017 New York Facebook Live Stream this year, I was truly honored. The annual gala helps raise hundreds of thousands (often millions) of dollars for an organization near to my heart.

Marriage Equality

My Most Awk Interview Yet

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I'll talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime. The more unconventional, the better. And I proved it when Complex LIVE asked me to do an interview at -- of all places -- The Museum of Sex in New York City.

Surrounded by sex toys and history lessons, I got to meet Awkwafina, one of the most interesting and hilarious new faces on the scene. So get this: she's a rapper, talk show host, and she's starring in the upcoming Ocean's 8, alongside some pretty powerful women.

She's basically J.Lo.

We are having the best time planning, especially the creative aspects like designing the save the dates, invitations, and thank you cards. At PAPYRUS, we love a good love story. As part of our Valentine’s Day series, we’d like to spread that romance with some in-real-life couples.

First up, Micah, a NYC-based brand spokesperson, content producer and social influencer, and his fiancée, Jason. The pair, who met in 2012—thanks to a little online dating help—will tie the knot this fall in Atlanta.

They decided to make PAPYRUS part of their wedding festivities with clean, modern invitations. We talked to Jason and Micah about their lifestyle… and how Jason popped the big question.

Where did you first meet?

We met on the dating app Tinder in 2012. After chatting for several weeks, we set a first date to meet for cocktails at a charming bar called Orient Express in the West Village in NYC.

What do you like best about the other person?

Jason: Micah is incredibly loyal, a great friend, generous and funny.

Micah: Jason is devoted, thoughtful, and so creative that it boggles my mind.

Describe your perfect Valentine’s Day.

We try to acknowledge our love in random ways all the time. For instance, we write each other love notes and give small gifts throughout the year. Valentine’s Day has really become an extension of that for us, and we use it as an opportunity to make reservations at a local favorite restaurant, like Frankie’s 570, or the location of our third date, Il Buco (also our favorite meal we’ve had together). When it comes to gifts, we love the mainstays of flowers and chocolates.

What do you like to do on a typical afternoon?

Typically, we start our days at the local Dunkin Donuts getting iced coffees. Lately, we’ve mostly been buying things for our apartment, and our current obsessions are palm trees and succulents. So we will frequent the Urban Garden Center in East Harlem. Then, we cap off the afternoon with a workout. Jason frequents SoulCycle and Bikram Yoga while Micah is a big fan of Rumble boxing.

Tell us how you proposed.

After three-plus years of dating, Jason proposed to Micah at the Palm Court in the Miami Design District while the two were visiting the sunshine state for a friend’s wedding. (Miami was the first city we visited on vacation as a couple.) Knowing how important the documentation of this occasion was to Micah, using an app called Thumbtack, Jason found two incredibly talented local photographers. There was a bit of pre-planning to make sure they could capture the exact moment, and they did. We spent the rest of the afternoon having an engagement photo shoot with them. They were a couple, so it was nice getting to share the occasion with them. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel to celebrate with friends over drinks.

Why did you decide to make PAPYRUS part of your engagement and wedding?

We wanted something simple, clean, and modern—but also unique—so we felt confident in the experts at PAPYRUS to turn our ideas into a reality.

Kinky Boots

Triple-threat Todrick Hall is currently starring as Lola in the Tony Award-winning musical Kinky Boots and you need to run -- not walk -- to go see him.

He invited me backstage into his dressing room for a quick chat before the show. Never would I have imagined our first meeting would end with me going for a "spin" in Lola's heels (as fate would have it, I too, am a size ten and a half.) with Todrick's help, I slipped them on and squealed with excitement.

New Rules of Engagement

I have been dating the same guy for over three years (and same-sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states) so the question of getting married was definitely on both of our minds.

Many months before it actually happened, Jason decided he was going to be the one to propose to me. (There are no rules here, but we talked about it, so it wasn't a complete surprise.)

First, he asked my parents for their blessing and cross-checked with my extended family to make sure there were no timing conflicts. (Whatta man, whatta man, what a mighty good man!) Then, he started vision-boarding epic proposal ideas. This is the most fun part.

I SAID YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES!!!!!!!!! Jason proposed to me on our last day in #Miami at the #PalmCourt in #MiamiDesignDistrict. So surprised. I am the happiest person on Earth!!! #frombubstohubs #engaged

Jason popped the question on November 6, 2016 (#11616) in the Miami Design District in front of the totally Instagrammable Palm Court. Since Miami was the very first vacation we went on as a couple, it had special meaning to us.

It was totally perfect in every way (at least, for us). There are no right or wrong ways to propose, but these are what I've learned to be the New Rules of Engagement:

Ask Parents For Their Blessing - asking parents for their blessing instead of the centuries-old tradition of asking for permission, lays the groundwork for equality in the relationship. Whether you are close to your partner's parents or not, you're going to want to give them a courtesy call and ask for their blessing. Who knows? You may also need their financial support for the big wedding... so it can't hurt.
Figure Out How You're Going To Pop The Question - this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (hopefully) so it should be meaningful. It can be fun (flash mob), adventurous (helicopter ride), or at home just the two of you. Whatever the case, make it meaningful to you as a couple.
Words Matter - if planning something is debilitating, focus on what you're trying to say. You want to tell your partner with words why you want to spend the rest of your life together. (I wish I could remember all the mushy stuff he said to me but I was in a haze)
Get The Ring(s) - you should have a pretty clear idea of what kind of ring your partner wants, or at least their desired stone shape and metal. Many couples choose to get their rings from big box places like Tiffany's or Zales -- and that's totally fine -- but for the guy or gal or has their own personal style, there's nothing like a custom-designed ring. Plus, it could be far less expensive if you go to a local or family jeweler.
Set A Date & Location - once you have the blessing of your family, and you've got the ring, you want to pick a date and location to pop the question.
Find A Wedding Or Journalistic Photographer - if you care about having photos like most people today (pics or it didn't happen) you are going to want to find a photographer who understands engagement proposals and can capture the moment from a journalistic perspective. Action shots are the best! You can use an app called Thumbtack to find photographers (or other skilled professionals) in your area.
Pop The Question!

New Year, New Blog!

I'm so excited to finally release an update to my blog. Every few years I give my site a face-lift and it feels brand new again.

What began as a hobby while studying at Hofstra University, blogging quickly became my full-time gig after graduating. I was covering all things celebrity, but from a positive perspective, unlike other bloggers in the field. I used skills I learned in my Public Relations classes to generate buzz.

While I was studying PR, I yearned to master broadcast. My first major on-camera hosting gig was a national brand campaign for Chevrolet where I was selected from over 1,000 applicants as their "Entertainment Cruze-arati" doing celebrity interviews in the Chevrolet Cruze.

Since then, I've appeared on dozens of my favorite talk shows, written articles for worldwide news outlets, and hosted events all over the country. Sometime I pinch myself when I think about all of it.

Looking back on 2016, I can't believe how much I accomplished. Most of my accomplishments were personal and had to do with moving cross-country back to New York and getting engaged, but I also had some great successes with my clients.
